Had lunch here yesterday with a friend. The restaurant is so quaint and decorated beautifully. I love the peonies on each tape. Favorite flower! I had the fried tomato BLT with the brisket onion soup. Both were absolutely delicious. She had a brisket onion soup with the classic salad. She really enjoyed hers also. The price for this lunch special was excellent and the serving size was perfect also. They had several other lunch specials that looked really good and next time I go, I tend to try the prime rib sandwich. Our service was tiptop. We will definitely return! read more

Celebrated my 54th Bday with brunch at Sugar and Rye! It was nothing short of amazing from the service to the food! There were 25+ in my party and Kyrie was an amazing server. I order the gumbo that was seasoned to perfection but the shrimp and grits was the best that I've ever tasted. OH and the cauliflower was the bomb too! Recommend 10/10 and will return! read more

We've been coming here since they opened and while outstanding when they first opened have watched the service and food quality do nothing but decline ever since. Today was so bad it's doubtful we'll ever come back. Over cooked in one instance and cold/greasy on another dish. We've been so eager to finally get to sugar + rye after hearing so many great things. Our visit (a Wednesday morning 10:30ish) started off great - the place is SUPER cute and the hostess was so friendly and accommodating. Our server was nice and even offered to put the kids' food in first so they weren't waiting too long. We got fried green tomatoes as our appetizer and they were decent but very thinly sliced. Unfortunately it was downhill from there. After waiting about 20 minutes for our food, our server let us know he forgot to put our order in and apologized. Mistakes happen and we understand, but by the time it arrived 45 minutes later, we were surprised all 3 entrees were room-temperature. I'm a chicken and waffles junky but it was average at best in my opinion. We also tried the French toast after seeing how great it looked on the website. Unfortunately that was also sub-par with the candied pecans being the best part about it. Our drinks sat empty as well because we barely saw our waiter after our order was placed. When we received our check, there was no compensation of any kind, even though we waited a very long time for our food and it was cold by the time we got it. Hopefully it was just an off day and we can try again in the future with better luck. read more

Went with a large group from the ATC conference, nice little place with many specialty drinks. Not sure if it was because we had a large group or if they do this for everyone but they brought out multiple plates of pimento cheese dip with spicy seasoned saltines and they were delicious. For appetizers we ordered a bunch of oysters which everyone liked, boudin balls and Korean wings which were all good. I had the fried shrimp basket for dinner, shrimp was good but fries were under the shrimp and were soggy with grease and not good. Many people had the snapper which everyone who ate it enjoyed. I think there were a few who had the risotto jambalaya and a few with pasta. Everyone enjoyed. I wouldn't order the fried shrimp basket again but will definitely go back and try something else as all the other dishes looked great. read more

We came a week before Father's Day to celebrate, however everyone in my party was disappointed with what they got. My little sister got the poke bowl and her tuna was partly brown. My father ordered the lemon blueberry pancakes and they came out looking deflated and were not all the way cooked, he also ordered eggs over easy and they came out with raw egg whites on the plate. I ordered the red beans and rice and was served something that resembled a chicken and sausage gumbo with no chicken. I also ordered their Street Car Sling and I understand that it had bitters in it but it genuinely tasted like they forgot the rest of the ingredients and just served me tonic and bitters. While the waitress who served us was very nice, I just don't see us coming back due to the aforementioned issues. read more

Our first round of cocktails...amazing. Our waitress was new and struggling. And that is aok. We get it. We had a large table and it was a holiday weekend. If we would have stopped at apps, we would have walked away happy. But the meals. I had read the reviews and had decided to get whatever main came with gouda grits and corn macque choux. It happened to be the flounder. The flounder was actually cooked well, but no seasoning at all. Just a little salt in the batter would have gone a long way. The grits...so sad. They were cold, hard and pasty. They too had no flavor. Like they forgot the jalapeno and gouda. Yuck. The corn macque choux tasted like canned cream corn mixed with some canned tomatoes. I wanted to cry. The steak? We had 100 better at salt grass. It was a fillet, the size of a hockey puck. The plate looked so empty. The pasta dishes were bland as xxxx too! Why oh why? The second round of cocktails were not the same as the round. We all were disappointed. But, the bread pudding was lit! So, if you go, stick to the apps and desert. read more

Then we ordered breakfast, and I had the avocado toast with fruit, and my husband had the start your day breakfast, with 2 eggs, bacon, breakfast potatoes, and toast. Everything was delicious. Our bartenders, Matthew and Devin, took great care of us. The service and drinks were on point!! I had a chocolate martini, and then we tried a flight of bourbon. You can pick 3 top bourbons for $35. The bar had a cool vibe, similar to New Orleans. We loved the ambiance of the restaurant. It was very inviting and comfortable. Everyone was friendly. Another swing through Galveston and a friend recommended Sugar and Rye. Three work teammates and I came tonight for dinner, three of us had the chicken basket, and one had coconut shrimp. The portions were great and all tasted delicious. We especially liked the jalapeño ranch. Our server was Chloe and she was very friendly and attentive. After dinner, I hung at the bar and reminisced of calmer political times while sipping Chicken Cock old fashioneds. My bartender, Sabby, delivered perfectly crafted drinks. This is my first time making a review on any business. Service was horrible! We were there for a while before anyone even got our drink order, then after 30-40 minutes of waiting (with hungry kids) we asked how much longer, then requested to cancel our order if they hadn't started making it yet. The hostess came out and said that the order had just been received 7 minutes prior. My coffee also came out with bright pink lipstick on it, and when I told the server, he actually asked me if I wanted another one! WTH.... then he walked off without taking it. I recently visited this place (2nd time ever) and the food was great! Im local, BOI and I chose this place based on ambiance and their brunch menu. 10/10. However, this was a brunch I pre-planned for my bridesmaids to enjoy a day and receive gifts from me. I called a week in advance to reserve a table of 7, I was told no at first due to their reservation restrictions of 8 or more. No worries at all (I was prepared to go early on a Sunday and wait my turn) I told the VERY kind gentleman that it was not an issue and I completely understand. He then checked their bookings and told me I could go ahead and put my reservation in, that they were not super busy and it was no problem. I was so thankful and so excited given that this was supposed to be a very exciting day! The morning of, I second guessed my counting and called first thing in the morning to confirm I reserved a table for 7 guests and not 6. I was immediately "greeted" by the nastiest attitude by an employee. I was so taken back as it was 9am and surely their day was not already awful. I ignored and went on to explain why I was calling and kept getting the response "ok", I told them my name, "ok".... Told them how many "ok" then finally was told "you really shouldn't have had a reservation to start with because we don't do that for less than 8." I then went on to explained that I called a week ago and this gentleman helped me out given it was not busy and I was 1 guest short. She then says..."ok." (Shocker) I gave her same attitude back and hung up the phone as I was so angry. Again, it was 9am and I was almost sure I was speaking to some sort of manager, which is such a poor way to represent what's supposed to be a classy establishment. My fiancé heard every word and suggested I choose another place because of how ugly this woman was on the phone. As I arrive I figured out who I spoke to on the phone due to observing how this woman treated the guests in front of us (poorly) and as we were headed to our table I spoke to her and let her know I did not appreciate how I was spoken to. Not a single apology was given. I let her know she was extremely rude on the phone and she responded " I was short maybe but not rude" I then replied, "no you were very rude to me and I was asking a simple question to make sure I did not mess up," she then went on to explain AGAIN why I should not have been given a table. I could've walked out right there. Not one apology, zero accountability, and zero compassion towards a customer. I have had some awful service before but she was beyond, and for someone who is supposed to lead a team of young adults (the other hostesses)?? Laughable. Luckily we had the sweetest waitress and made the best of our time there but I will not be back given someone like her is in charge of the staff. So disappointing! read more

My friend and I went here for brunch today and were very disappointed. My friend order the pickled shrimp and it was not good at all. It had been sitting in the brine too long and had a terrible taste. We sent it back and he ordered the avocado toast. When that was served the avocado was not fresh avocado, it was like the Wholly Guacamole spread you buy at HEB. The waitress was very apologetic but after sending back two dishes, you would think the manager would come to talk to us. Nope. Not a word. They took the dishes off our bill but it would have been nice if the manager had taken the time to speak with us. We also order the mimosa carafe and it was $32 for cheap sparkling wine. It is a great looking place but the lack of care from the manager has made me not want to dine there again. read more

Unfortunately, I think this place has a lot of potential, but it missed on a few critical things. First, the service is very slow. I overheard staff say they were understaffed, but I can't understand why because it was Spring break. They should have prepared for this busier period. Second, the menu options looked incredible, but the items we ate were not executed well. I had the brisket skillet. Although I thought it was flavorful, the egg was over cooked so the yolk did not run on to the skillet like it should. There wasn't very much brisket for a dish that is called the "brisket" skillet. I expected the brisket to be more than a garnish. There were plenty of potatoes, but they looked dry, so that leads me to believe they are frozen potatoes. My husband had the Orleans pasta. It was supposed to have chorizo, andouille sausage, and chicken. He said that he expected more flavor and spice, and he did not see any chorizo in his pasta. I did enjoy the atmosphere and decor. It's trendy and looks upscale. It's a small space, so it was noisy. The lavender latte was delicious especially on a rainy day. I also liked the green mimosa for St. Patrick's day. Finally, a good restaurant on the island that stays open late! I came with a reservation (with opening weekend happening- that is a hot tip! Get a reservation). They sat me when I walked in, and everything on the menu looked great! I ended up getting a flank steak! My boyfriend got the shrimp and grits. I think he won because I was stealing bites of his all night long on top of eating all of mine. We ended up drinking expresso martini all night! I have got to bring my girlfriends here! The bar was making it happen. It was dangerously good! The service was fast and very attentive! They were able to put together a great team for opening week. The high level of great service is refreshing to have on the island because you don't see it like this often. I haven't even gotten to DECOR! This wallpaper, the light fixtures, and down to the perfect little floral arrangements on the table! THIS PLACE IS SO CUTE!
