Really baffled given the reviews for this place. I decided to give this place a go for the first time and was pretty disappointed. I ordered the Bangkok Beef Noodles. It arrived in a round plastic container and was covered in this thick salty gravy sauce. It was pretty nasty. To make matters worse, all of the veggies were frozen. No joke, I received the typical cube shaped frozen carrots and other veggies. The whole dish tasted like one of those Asian frozen meals you buy in the supermarket. I have ordered from countless different Thai restaurants in the past and have never received frozen veggies just dumped into my dish before. This is my first time eating in at Sugar & Spice. I remember liking their delivery food (but this was a few years ago). The place was pretty empty on a Saturday night. They did have a lot of delivery orders going out though. Things that bothered me, in the order that it happened: - Lukewarm tea: It's literally 2 degrees outside, we obviously wanted HOT tea?! - Timing of food: Some of us got our entrees, while others were still on their appetizers. I would appreciate if they served ALL of the appetizers, then ALL of the entrees. Everyone ate at a different pace and it was just awkward. I understand they want to get the food out as it's ready, so time it right to have all the entrees done around the same time? - Food: ordered the Pad See Yew with crispy chicken (which is +2.95, mind you) and the crispy chicken was so BLAND. I expected more from a Thai place and bland food in general is just unacceptable! My friend's tofu noodle soup was also bland, she had to ask for hot sauce. - Music: I think they had 5 songs on repeat and also could tone down the volume. Positive notes: - Shrimp mermaid came out piping hot, crispy, and shrimp was perfectly cooked inside. - Service was attentive and friendly. Sugar and Spice was one of the best restaurants I had been to in a looong time. The Kow Soi Moo Krob was ABSOLUTELY delicious and was everything I wanted on a chilly autumn evening. The broth hit every flavor you could ask for. It was a great balance of a rich, coconutty sweetness, a bright sourness, saltiness and a touch of spiciness (I got the mild). The crispy pork in it was the right amount of fat to meat to skin. The crispy topping to the dish was okay, but when crushed up and added to the broth, was a nice touch. My friends dishes also looked amazing and they enjoyed it as well. The one thing that was just "okay" were the cocktails. This is our go-to take out spot, always. The noodle dishes and curries never disappoint. Super flavorful and great portions. They do curb-side pick up, but we recently tried delivery and were impressed by how quickly it showed up! I dined several times at this place in the past. Dishes were slightly above average but too generic. I came back again for takeout during the pandemic in the summer 2020, mainly due to upgrades on their menu. Great moves of updating their menu with new Thai dishes and not like the standard pad thai, curry, boat noodle etc. I love their Guay-Jub, pad mee korat, pork belly with Chinese broccoli and tom yum soup. Another great thing about this place is that the portion is large. Hence, great value for money. The only criticism I have is for their avocado curry. The curry is good but it's dissaponting that the chef add slices of avocado on top of the chicken curry and calls it avocado curry. I do think the idea is interesting and worth experimenting but the chef needs to incorporate the avocado into the dish. I'm giving 2 stars bc it used to be good. My delivery meal tonight was really not. I ordered what I thought was thai iced tea (and had been in the past), but is now just sweet milk. And the Pad See You is just bad now. Noodles were basically a pile of mush, hardly any egg to be seen, 1 slice of carrot, sauce way too vinegary. I won't order from Sugar and Spice again bc the quality of this dish has been declining so much and making the sauce a vinegar sauce is not what most people want for Pad see you - you expect a sweet brown oyster sauce. Hands down my favorite Thai place in Cambridge. A separate vegan and GF menu at a thai place is basically unheard of, but Sugar and Spice manages to offer vegan varieties of foods from all over Thailand and do all of them amazingly! I love the pad mee korat, the green curry, basil fried rice, and the basil stir fry with tofu. The crispy basil tofu is also really, really amazing - not just a crispier version of the basil stir fry! It's got a really deep roasted flavor with onions and pineapples. Great stuff. Delivery and pickup are really easy through Toast online, and the food is always hot and ready at the time they promise! Will keep going back again and again. I had ordered takeout from here before and loved it. The items were neatly packed and no leakage including beverages were nicely sealed which not a lot of places does. This has led me to dine-in if takeout met my expectation and there were some dishes I wanted to try while dining in. I was glad I did, the food was so flavorful and fresh. This place really takes their spices seriously. They know how to use their ingredients and in an unique way. When they tell you a dish is spicy, you better belive its spicy! My mouth and lips were burning, but it was hard to stop eating. The presentation for every dish was great. Their menu is extensive, just their beverage section takes up a page or two. I love how they categorized the food list based on different regions of Thailand. This really gives you a sample of "Taste of Thailand." There were no wrong dish, every dish was delicious. Favorite dishes I've ordered from the new menu that I've never had elsewhere before! - hor mok: salmon and shrimp thick curry in a coconut. This is legit in top 10 things I've eaten in my life I'm sure. Order it and dream about it. -kang hung lay: pork belly curry stew. Dank. -Thai veggie pan fried dumplings: was initially sad when I ordered these because of being with a group of vegetarians (rip) but these are DOPE! A lovely light pant fry and so soft and chewy ugh. These exceeded my expectations! -saloon sai moo: cutie tapioca dumplings with ground pork ugh love these! Saw a lot of recommendations about this restaurant, and finally tried this place. The decoration is ok, and the service is good. We tried the most popular "chicken on fire", a crab fired rice, and a dish of curry. Chicken on fire looks cool, the restaurant will give you the fish, and customers can take some pictures first, then the servers will split the chicken on the dish. The sauce was good, but the chicken was basically tasteless. The crab fried rice is actually very good (not cheap tho, $19 for it), they gave a lot of crab meat, and you can actually taste it. The curry is kinda disappointed because it does not come a lot, not too much meat as well. As a Thai restaurant, I think the curry was not good enough, but it is spicy for sure. read more

I ordered thai iced tea, one sliced pork from the Isan menu, tom yum soup w/ shrimp, and chicken gra-pow. Honestly the gra-pow is so good, despite it being slightly on the drier side. The spice is no joke. My partner had to stop eating because his sinuses were going OFF. Meanwhile me, who has quite a high spice tolerate needed some water to accompany and later at night my stomach was burning (which is GREAT! Love meeting a challenger). The mango sticky rice-- my first one ever-- was delish as a desert. I do wish the rice was a bit more soaked/sticky but maybe thats just how they make it. I thought the Isan thing was not bad but my mom makes a char siu thats similar, just without the fish sauce. One of my absolute FAVORITES. Have the bubble tea! The range of flavors is impressive, it's not too sweet and it's prepared with the consistency of a smoothie. So good! Even if I eat somewhere else I sometimes stop by and grab a bubble tea to go for dessert! Service has always been friendly and prompt when i have visited. I actually have tried too much of the menu- I typically stick with my favorites. If you like pad Thai get the 'country' pad Thai, it is a great twist on the dish. They also deliver! read more

We ordered food via toast that we picked up. One of the items was the Taro Pearls in Coconut Cream. We were taken aback when we got home and saw the amount of the dessert that was given. We only did takeout from here, and although we very much enjoyed the Sakoo Sai Gai appetizer for $11, we really weren't that thrilled with either the Khua Kling Chicken for $16 nor the Spicy Tofu Pad Thai for $14. Unfortunately, despite asking for the Pad Thai to be spicy, it was NOT at all that way!!! Clearly, the kitchen made a mistake and prepared the dish as just plain. As for the Khua Kling Chicken dish, it does specify being extremely spicy hot, and it actually was. I did like the complexity of the flavors though, but not that the chicken is ground instead of chopped up. In all fairness to the restaurant, they do say on the menu that the meal is prepared with the chicken as such, so that's my issue. We will definitely go back and once again order the Sakoo Sai Gai to start off our dinner, since it was so delicious and interesting looking. Maybe next time, we will be adventurous and try a few new items. read more

Sugar and Spice has an amazing vegan menu, with unique dishes that don't leave vegan/vegetarians with a limited selection to accommodate their dietary restrictions. We love the Hor Mok (served in a coconut shell) but everything on the menu is pretty creative and presented really nicely. But the excellent food is second to the wonderful people. Araya in particular is so warm and affectionate - making time to explain the dishes and giving her recommendations even on a busy friday night. As a vegetarian I usually avoid Thai restaurants due to hidden fish sauce, but this place has a whole vegan menu (a gluten free menu is available too)! I really like that they also offer an option for white or brown rice and fried or steamed tofu. The Vegan Kow Yum looks like a beautiful palette with purple rice in this app and very interesting flavors of lemongrass, Thai basil and toasted coconut. I probably wouldn't get it again, but it was different. We also shared the steamed vegan gyoza which had an almost sweet taro filling (and safe for my mushroom allergy). They had another pan fried dumpling I would also like to try. The Summer roll with shrimp and tofu was also enjoyed by the table. I got the Pad See You (vegan) since I wanted to avoid spicy and it was a yummy sweet and savory blend with broccoli, steamed tofu, and wide noodles. My husband felt that the 1 star label for the Kow Soi Moo Krob was not quite spicy enough (pork and egg noodle dish) and others at the table felt the 4 star Panang Curry and 2 star Kanom Jean Namya were both too spicy -they were flushed and their noses were running! I first tried their food at the Boston Night Market and ever since then, I've wanted to try the actual restaurant! I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed after the long wait. They have a really big gluten free menu which was really helpful to me. I split the gf Simply Surprise, gf Sakoo Sai Gai, gf Som Tom Thai, and Thai iced coffee. Everything was delicious!!! I definitely recommend the Simply Surprise. The Som Tom Thai was good but definitely spicy. I wish I saved more of the iced coffee to drink with it! read more

I highly suggest just ordering a bunch of stuff and sharing with whoever you're with because the food is really that great! You'll want to try as many dishes as possible. Crispy fried duck, prepare to battle your friends Hunger Games style for this stuff. Totally crispy and terrible for your body. The texture in my opinion needs a little getting used to, it's really chewy. But you'll get there, plus the special sauce is really good. Purple Fried Rice. There's like, one purple thing on there so the name threw me off. However, sidenote, do NOT eat the tiny red pepper things as they may or may not burn your mouth off. So I got here and the waitress was seating us at a booth, but I noticed there were circle booths that looked really cool and asked her if we can sit there. With annoyance, she was like "no" and rolled her eyes at me. I was so caught off guard by this. Ok, I know it's annoying when customers requests where they want to sit because I am a hostess myself, but it's only annoying if they request to sit elsewhere AFTER you've seated them. But we were just walking to our table and asked. This waitress was rude to us throughout our entire meal. In fact, she ended up asking another waitress so serve us because she made it pretty obvious that she didn't like us. We were seated at a booth across from the cashier and noticed her talking to another waitress and looking at us with dirty looks. I am not even exaggerating. At this point, I wasn't even bothered by her because I am only here to enjoy my lunch with my girlfriends. So here's my point: THE SERVICE IS AWFUL HERE. It's not going to stop me from coming back though because my pad see ew with duck was SO good. I think it's definitely one of the best pad see ews I have ever had. My friends ordered a bento box and it was really good too. I can't wait to be back for the food. However, if service continues to be crappy, I definitely won't be back. I think I've ordered this dessert every single time I've visited. -- tom yum soup: salty, sour, spicy, & satisfying -- crispy basil chicken: lightly fried, plenty of basil -- gra prao chicken: amazing chili sauce -- excited chicken: tender chicken breast, veggies, & a bit of crunch from cashews. Presented in a crisp, puffed shell -- crispy pad thai: probably my least favorite item I've tried, but still better than the pad Thai I've had in SF -- sticky rice: love the tiny bamboo container -- Thai rolls: nice & crispy Lovely outdoor seating for when the weather's cooperative.
