I wonder how many clients they have that are BLACK I have NEVER felt so out of place at "Sugar Bees" My fiancé and I decided that it was time to start looking for our cake. We came across "SB" and instantly wanted to set up a cake tasting with them. Saturday is here! My two bridesmaids, fiancé and my son arrived at 11am. Once we arrive, this sweet older lady informs us that the cake designer will be out shortly. All of us is extremely excited, my bridesmaids and I are looking at the cakes that they have on display and talking amongst ourselves. Alicia finally comes out, we introduce ourselves and instantly I can tell that something is wrong or something may have happened. For some reason, she is very dry and barely communicating- no excitement at all. She then starts to ask us questions in regards to our wedding: venue, date, day, etc. and becomes mute ( I'm thinking maybe she's new, etc. ) she then says we can try the cake. The pieces of cakes were on two different plates, so we really didn't have any direction on where to start. Keep in mind we are in a conference type of room, picking up the plates and sliding them back in forth while she is sitting with her left elbow on the table with the palm of her left hand on the side of her face, giving us little to NO Communication. We are now down to our 2nd to last piece of cake... to break silence I asked her (after my fiancé and I taste it) whats in this cake pointing to it. Alicia tells me to WAIT! Taken back, I chose not to say anything at the time since my guests were there and I didn't want her to feel intimidated or feel as if I was attacking her with all of us being in this room. After my last bridesmaid taste it she finally tells us, but she still is very short. At this time we are done tasting the cake. We sit there for maybe 2-3 minutes looking around, VERY Awkward. I start mentioning the cakes I like, the style of certain cakes and let her know that one of their cakes have caught my attention. Alicia, does not ask me to show her, shes just really not talking.. I then ask her if I can show her the cake I am referring to, she gets up very bothered and I politely asked her outside the room if everything was ok. It was then that I told her I felt unwelcome and that this experience has not been pleasurable for me or my guest. I told her how short she was in conversation and when it came to disgusting the details of the cake it seemed like she wasn't even interested. Alicia, seemed bothered from the time we introduce ourselves and I didn't understand what it was. I had been to many different venues, bridal shops, catering places, and have never felt that someone did not want my business. After the conversation, Alicia immediately said no one has never said that to her... and I'm thinking, well it's clearly because you provided them a different experience than what you are showing us. Nevertheless, we move on.. her whole attitude change, she then goes over the details of the cake and tells me the price, etc. and says she will send an email with everything. Now, at this point if she didn't want to make my cake I would have understood.. Sunday goes by, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.. finally I decide to call due to the fact that I didn't receive and email or a call like she said she was. After 4-5 minutes Alicia comes to phone and says, "I talked to the owner about what happened and we decided to not make your cake." I'm baffled. Here's the thing I wouldn't take a cake from them If it was free. What bothers me the most is the way I was treated. The owner prosecuted me without ever giving me a call. No one never called me or emailed me and said, they didn't want to make my cake... and you run a business. My fiancé had to reach out for a refund, and the owner email was just as dry. Alicia was really upset and we choose to not make your cake. Never, once did she apologize just for the way Alicia made us feel. Not once. I absolutely did have a conversation with Alicia, because I felt as though it was important for her to know how "we" felt and how "we" were treated. I did not raise my voice, I was tactful the whole time and it's shocking to me that as a cake designer you have a hard time with constructive criticism. The owner believed whatever Alicia told her and that was it. The owner, nor Alicia didn't even give me the courtesy to call me after I took time out of my day to come to her place of business and when I asked Alicia why no one called me she said, " WE DIDN'T THINK YALL WOULD BUY ONE." I have never been the one to place race in the mix but I truly believe they had a problem with us being black, I truly believe from the moment Alicia saw us she did not want to make our cake. Here's the thing, if you want to keep your business "WHITE only then say that too." After looking at their IG, it seems that are only interested in making cakes for white people. read more

I have been coming to this bakery for years. The staff is always courteous and patient when you're making a decision. The cupcakes are always phenomenal and I always will enjoy one of their flavors even if they're sold out of my favorite. The cake balls are also good. My girlfriend got a cake made here as a surprise for my birthday. The movie Up is one of my favorites and she had it designed as a surprise. Had to be the best cake I've ever had. We went there specifically for tiramisu and was told they have run out but we didn't get any information on when they will have it or how can they help pick a flavor other than what we came in looking. I ordered a small cake for my baby and gave them creative freedom with it. They did an excellent job on the decorations and presentation. Customer service was great. My only complaint is the texture and taste of the cake. The chocolate felt hard and the cake was hard. Like if it was old. We ordered yellow cake with chocolate. Maybe they had a off day. Always the best cakes. I ordered another small one for my husbands birthday last week and it was perfect. We loved the chocolate cake, with creamy white frosting, and a perfect Oreo filling. Loved the bakery! It's tucked away just north of the College. We stopped in at 3:30 and picked up a couple of cake balls, a Cinnamon roll and Churro cupcake. The Cinnamon roll was the perfect portion size and delish the next morning. I opened my cupcake the following night to find it was not the flavor I'd ordered but something with some kind of berries or berry. While I'm not exactly a berry lover, I did taste it and it had good flavor. I was disappointed that somehow my cupcake was mixed up though because there was only 1 other customer behind us. From our first tasting, we knew that not only was the cake delicious, but that your team was incredibly knowledgeable, providing guidance on size, tiers, multiple flavors, design etc. The cake looked great on the wedding day and we've received nothing but glowing feedback from guests on how great it tasted. My husband and I ordered a cake to celebrate our anniversary and gender reveal. I'm sure the cake will be delicious, however I'm quite embarrassed by the way the cake was presented to me. Very unprofessional. If you are going to have cakes in different sizes, then at least have a box that could fit the cake being ordered. The cashier suggested another option entails buying a cake box for 7 dollars. However, the upgraded box was measured for a three tier cake which was oversized for the small cake we ordered. They didn't even have a bag to put my box in. This might be a great cake shop (haven't tasted the cake yet) but presentation is everything and I'm quite disappointed. read more

I came in specifically for the macaroons, and was told they did not have any. I noticed the cake balls in the window and decided to order a dozen of those in a variety of flavors for my sister's treat table for her birthday. These cake balls are definitely not what I expected when we bit into them. I've had cake balls before and I was not impressed with these. The outside of them are pretty, but when we bit into them it was just raw dough. There was no cake texture, and they were definitely not baked before rolling them into the icing. I called on the next business day to explain how unsatisfied I was with the cake balls, and the young lady proceeded to tell me thats just how they make them. The cake balls were "supposed" to be like that. They are denser, and that's just how they are. I told her that these were raw dough, and they were not pleasing at all. Anyway, nothing was resolved with that phone call, was told no manager there at the time, but I wouldn't go back to order any more cake balls from here. read more

This place is a hidden gem in Arlington!!! I needed a cake for my birthday dinner last minute and called this shop and sent an email. They were quick to respond and got back to me with all the details. The cake was fabulous and EXACTLY what I asked for. Not only was it pretty it was a hit taste and look wise with my birthday party guest!!! Will definitely be using this bakery for all my sweet needs. I love that they are open so early at 7 am. The inside decor is absolutely beautiful but the place is a little hard to find because it's actually behind another building but non the less very pleasantly surprised. The cupcakes were so pretty & tasted just as good. Very soft & fresh. I got the last red velvet cupcake & I went in at 10 am. I assumed it had to be good selling out so fast & it was ! If I were just rating the cakes and baked goods, this would be a 5. Unfortunately, product is just one part of the equation. When I visited their store a couple months ago, I could actually hear the owner berating her employees in the room next door with the doors wide open. I could tell the poor girl working the front counter was embarrassed but I was absolutely mortified that an owner (Heidi) would speak to people that way at all, but especially when there were customers in the store. Since then I have not been back. I guess it makes sense now why there always seemed to be a new person working up front when I would come in. read more

The first photo is what we asked for. The second photo is what we received. Initially we asked for a different cake but due to covid we made adjustments and asked for a faux cake that would cost the amour of the deposit we paid. Of course I was wrong to assume that I would be getting a two tired cake because my original cake was one tier. I sent them 4 cakes and allowed them to pick one that would match the faux value of $146. They selected this two tiered cake and I guess it was silly of me to assume i would get a faux cake of $146 value. When we called they cared nothing to correct the mistake. Instead they are calling and emailing me on my honeymoon to offer excuses. My problem is not that we had a misunderstanding. My problem is their failure to correct the issue when it mattered. My problem is they gave us this half assed fake cake for $146. A single tier of styrofoam covered in white frosting is not worth $146. This single tier doesn't even look like the bottom tier. If you have seen their cakes you would know they do amazing work. So what happened here? It's half assed. Their rebuttals: "We offered a second cake to go in the back" -we did not want a second cake. We asked for sheet cake and we're told they don't do sheet cake. But later on they claim they have done sheet cake for other brides. "We offered cupcakes" -I told them multiple times we had a pastry vendor who was making cupcakes "You approved it" -I did, under the assumption I would get two tires and surly wouldn't be paying $146 for a single faux tier of white frosting. "We provide detailed outlines" -if it was that detailed there wouldn't have been a misunderstanding. A misunderstanding is no excuse. I don't care that my husband said it looked good when he picked it up. He's a man and doesn't know what he's talking about. That faux cake looked like crap. When we called expressing that it wasn't what we wanted and that we wanted two tiers we expected for that to be corrected but it wasn't. That right there is where the biggest issue came in. I don't care what the circumstances were, it's nothing to slap some icing on styrofoam and wait a few more moments. Every other vendor went above and beyond. When there was a catering issue that came from our end our caterer ran out to grab what was needed so that I could have the best experience on my wedding day. Our florist had to come in and work magic on the cake. We had cake flowers ready with two tiers in mind and she was only scheduled for a drop off but she stayed to decorate the cake herself so it would look presentable. Never mind the service, let the people look at her bottom tiers of each cake and decide how well you've done. read more

My mom is obsessed with carrot cake and in her usual fashion, randomly called me up to find and bring her some on a Thursday afternoon. I googled places in my area and Sugar Bee popped up. I stopped by and like most people, I value the impact of initial presentation. This place is GORGEOUS! It was quaint, clean and just had the most precious aesthetic. The cashier immediately greeted me and asked me how she could help. She asked if I had ever been and advised me of the cupcake "happy hour". This clearly influenced my decision to buy more than I needed and/or what I came for, but, I digress. I ended up grabbing the hummingbird and vanilla cupcakes and the carrot, almond and strawberry champagne cake balls. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! That almond is toooooooooo good. My mom is a pretty harsh judge when it comes to her beloved carrot cake and she was blown away. Everything was packaged perfectly; prices are in line with what you would pay anywhere else. They made our wedding cake and grooms cakes when we got married in 2014 and they were both delicious and perfect. We continue to go for cupcakes, scones and coffee. We were introduced to Sugar Bee today by a new acquaintance. The owner came out and chatted with us. She is an amazing cake decorator. There were so many beautiful cake displays, as well as, many magazine articles about her! As we were ordering our enormous cake balls, the staff were packaging up the cutest pink pig face macaroons and showed us the matching piggy cake ball pops. Someone is going to have a wonderful Pig party! BTW - the cake balls are amazing!!! They recently opened a sandwich shop attached called The Hive. I LOVE the names...Sugar Bee and The Hive! New location, new review! I left a bad review after a bad experience several years back at the old location, but since they've moved I rediscovered them, stopped in, and all is forgiven! The old place had bad flow which meant that customers like me got ignored hard. The new place funnels people to exactly one place where there are always attendants cheerfully waiting. As for the goods: their frosting is delightful! Creamy and sweet yet balanced with the right saltiness and with a clean finish. No plastic-y aftertaste which is endemic in low-quality bakeries. I can't know for certain, but I have my suspicions that they are using a butter-shortening mixture of some proprietary proportion for their frosting which is working beautifully! Enough butter for perfect flavor, enough shortening of some kind for structural integrity! Their cake itself gets a B+ from me (a little too fluffy and processed and flatly sweet for me without enough contrast like a buttermilk tang) but then again, I eat a cupcake from the top down and usually throw at least part of the cake away anyway, haha, so it's largely lost on me. Also, I typically hate cake balls for a looong litany of reasons, but I got a toffee cake ball for my toffee fiend man and *I* loved it! I also love their oreo one! Their coffee is nothing special (I suspect the bakery attendants could use a bit more training on how to use the machine) but I can't hold that against them because their soft chocolate chip cookies more than make up for it! Newest obsession: MORNING BUNS. I've only ever had theirs, but theirs is so soft and lovely!! read more
