First issue: our reservation was canceled through OpenTable, which already started the night off poorly on what was supposed to be a special occasion. The food was extremely disappointing. The fish was inedibly salty, to the point no one at the table could finish it. The drinks were just as bad -- watery, with all the candy sitting at the bottom, offering more for looks than taste. To make it worse, there was no dry ice, which is a big part of why people come here in the first place. Everything was wildly overpriced for the quality we received. For a place that markets itself on experience and celebration, it completely missed the mark. Made a reservation for 2 on open table 5 days in advance for 6:45. At 6:10 we showed up early and just let them know we were there, but no rush. At 6:45 we asked if our table was ready yet and they said no but that they'd text us when it was. We left at 7:15 without a text. As I'm writing this review, I still have yet to receive a text lol. One of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. I really wanted to like this place and the ambiance is beautiful and whimsical but with the number of amazing options in downtown, this place really fails short in so many ways. The worst parts were the EXTREMELY slow and rude service, and the mediocre food at outrageous prices. We were a party of 4 and we were sat at 6:30, our reservation time, and we did not leave until after 9:30. Ridiculous. Unless you are having a big party and doing the whole entertainment experience, I do not feel smaller tables get the same quality treatment. And they automatically add 20% gratuity which I feel the service majorly lacked and the wait staff doesn't feel like they have to provide good service. I called after my visit to speak to the manager and was told my contact information would be passed on, and I never received a call. I will never go back! read more

Where do I begin? Came here to celebrate my partners birthday. She had a great time which is all that matters, but It was a very mixed experience for myself. Small delay in getting our table, though it was a busy night and we were ten minutes late for our reservation. Totally on us, very forgivable. When seated we were put in a busy travel corridor when much more accommodating or confortable tables were available. My seat was also uneven and wobbled alot. This speaks to much of the restaurant itself, it's all very well polished on the surface but it can only hide its age and wear so much. Broken, half working, half legible neon signs that probably once said cute things. Broken tv monitors that probably once held displays of beautiful landscapes, wobbly chairs and tables. They have a "candy store" but its charm is marred from the dozens of empty shelves and inventory boxes not put away, detracting from any would be ambiance. We started with one of their hawaiian punch "famous goblets", essentially a fishbowl cocktail for two or more to share. Rather pricey at 46 dollars. But the presentation was mostly nice. The dry ice is always a cool effect but upon integration bubbled over and our server had to use multiple napkins to wipe it up for us and We werent given our collectible rubber duckie garnishment either. They also have so much ice you cant even get to the last third of your drink without a fight, and a flimsy straw is your only weapon. It was ok, but ive had much better for less without all the mess. Again, my partner got tipsy and enjoyed herself. So, all good. At that price I let her nurse it and just sipped my water since I was driving anyways. It was our only drink. For food we ordered a flight of rainbow sliders. It's five sliders with a rainbow array of colored buns. They are supposed to include onions, cheese, and signature sauce. They arrived after 40 minutes overdone, lacking any "signature sauce" (they never define in the menu what it is), some without cheese and very few if any onions. The "onions" we did have seemed like the overun of onion ring batter they fished out of the fryer. I wouldn't recommend. The sliders themselves were also much smaller than the buns leaving a rather bread filled experience. I would hoenstly rather get a crave case from white castle. The kitchen did include the rubber duckie garnishment unlike the bar though. We also tried the mac and cheese pops. I will say these were quite good, but the included bed of marinara sauce while very tasty, was woefully lacking in quantity to be a meaningful dipping sauce in any form. Thankfully the tomato bisque I ordered was very tasty and proved a wonderful substitute. Though I had to hunt down a staff member to even get a spoon to eat it with and that took almost ten minutes even in our busy corridor. I also ordered a steak sandwich with fries. The bread was good, but the steak was like the sliders.. horrendously overcooked, very little cheese or onions, very heavy on the mushrooms (also overcooked and burnt). The french fries were spot on but they're also just french fries. Much rather would have some fresh ones from mcdonalds for a fourth the price. The tables also have no salt or pepper so you cant even attempt to season something to your preference. The only thing rewarding about this place to me, is the stuff that had sugar in it. Which makes sense given its name. The birthday milkshake my partner got came very well prepared, was extremely decadent and delicious and the presentation was fantastic with birthday sprinkle glass and the entire slice of rainbow cake garnishment on top of it. Its impressive if a little hard to practically manage. The cake was top notch and very creamy and buttery and smooth, and the milkshake equaled it. 6/5 there. They also brought her a nice strawberry and chocolate ice cream sundae with a big showy sparkler that drew a lot of attention and the staff sang us a nice song. It made her very happy. Overall, this probably was a good place before and I do think the service staff "try" to maintain that atmosphere. (I use quotes because italics isnt available here on yelp.) Our server Kit-Kat (yes you read that correctly) was overall very attentive and thoughtful. I saw some servers really get down on the birthday celebrations for the larger groups. That was fun as well. Though it did get almost dance club level loud at times. Three servers also went out of their way to graciously compliment my partner and I for her beauty, her style, and my attire. (Not in a weird way, very nice to us to hear such things unprovoked) That being said they do charge even small 2 person tables a mandatory 20% excess gratuity of which 3% goes to the restaurant and 17% goes to servers. read more

However, after we order different options we see another table section with the sliders who got there after us. Also, the server had an strong foul odor on him every time he came to our table we would smell mildew odor as if he may have worn his Christmas sweater a few too many times before washing... He forgot most of our orders I lost my appetite & wanted to leave but I stayed due to the children wanting to stay. Honestly, the overall experience wasn't horrible it was just our server. We could smell the fun off of some of the waitresses...and ours had the side effect of forgetfulness, not coming back ever, seating us in the wrong area (they were advised to move us as a beautiful booth was clearing out and forgot about that too...) , leaving us without drinks for over an hour, forgot my sauce for mg food after being asked twice about it, and not once were we ever asked if the food was good once it was delivered. My family and I recently visited the Sugar Factory in downtown Detroit to celebrate my niece's 17th birthday with a party of 20 guests. Unfortunately, from the moment we walked in, the experience was disappointing on every level. The customer service was awful and uninviting, the restrooms were nasty with broken mirrors and the atmosphere was dead--hardly any guests, which probably explains all the poor reviews. Our waitress rolled her eyes when we asked for a straw, and it was VERY obvious she didn't want to be there. Staff training and customer service need serious attention. We ended up leaving before ordering to spend our time at The Cheesecake Factory instead, where we will be treated much better. I hope the manager or owner sees this and reaches out. We were in Detroit for a show. We had allotted about an hour and a half for dinner which we thought would be plenty of time. How wrong we were. It took almost an hour for all of the food to come out, and it all came out in increments, with almost 20 minutes between our 3 entrees. It was almost as if the chef was physically incapable of making more than one meal at a time. The other two people I was with were asking for boxes by the time I had my meal. The final entree came out, without its side, about 10 minutes before we had to leave. We asked for the bill and our waiter came back about 7 minutes later with the bill and the missing side of fries. It's not like it was crazy busy in there either. There were probably 4 total parties in the entire restaurant. Speaking of food, the food was terrible. I had chicken tenders from Speedway the other day and they were better than the ones I had here. The one point I'll give them is they make a really good flatbread. Everything else we had was passible at best. In conclusion, I would recommend eating somewhere else, unless you really want to wait an hour for a flatbread. read more

Fakey fancy. We went for lunch on a Monday and the place was fairly dead - 3 other tables around us were filled, but this is a huge space. It's very cute and I can see it's Instagrammable; there are lots of places to take selfies and a huge video wall with celebrities on red carpets, that kind of thing. But the dishes (at least at lunch) are plastic, and my plate was dirty. In addition, I had a hair in my fries. No bueno. I didn't mention it to the servers - there appeared to only be 2 working, and they were busting ass. I didn't want to cause a fuss - I just didn't finish the fries once I noticed. if I had been coming out of my own pocket for this meal, honestly, I would have left. Dirty dishes just aren't a good look, and I should have known after that. We had chicken sandwiches - I had the buffalo chicken - and it was ok. The bun was nice and fresh, and the sandwich tasted pretty good, but the fries could have been fresher, and I'm sure this was a frozen chicken patty refried, or at least that's what it tasted like. The service was actually quick and pretty good, so I don't mind the 20% gratuity automatically added, but you may want to note that. Overall, a good place to catch a nice-ish quick lunch in an hour, but check your plates and food for cleanliness. I worry that this place is too big with the most ridiculously large menu ever, and it might not last with other upscale restaurants in the area. This place seems to be marketed as "luxurious," but that's not the vibe I got with plastic plates and glasses. The coconut cream martini tasted amazing but the Oreo cookie dream was kind of questionable. For food we ordered the spicy spaghetti à la vodka add shrimp, 6/10 & the big cheesy burger 9/10. My friend was dying to go here for her bday. I had never heard of it so I started to read up on this place. It had terrible reviews so I tried to talk her out of it. She insisted we go, so we did. First let me say this restaurant is an experience and it's not for everyone. It's super cute and decorated in a very fun way. The music is loud and it's mostly hip hop and rap so if that is not your thing then maybe don't go there. The waitstaff will break into a dance at any moment for certain songs and they are amazing and fun to watch. This may mean your server will have to stop what they are doing and go dance, so you might have to wait a little longer for whatever you wanted. It's all part of the experience. We were there about 2 hours. If you're in a hurry to get somewhere after dining at Sugar Factory this restaurant is not for you. The meal will take a long time. These servers are dancing and serving and working their butts off. The menu is huge. They have something for everyone. The food is very basic. You're not here for a culinary delight. You're here for the show and the experience. If that bothers you this restaurant is not for you. I got a burger and fries. It was nothing special. It was edible and I was fine with that. My bubbling drink with the dry ice was fantastic! It was pretty, delicious, and fun! The giant bowl of ice cream we got was soooo delicious. Next time I would just get a drink and a dessert. The bathrooms were disgusting and that I cannot put a positive spin on. There are no excuses for a bathroom being that dirty in a restaurant. PSA I am not a food critic but just wanted to share our experience. Today is Labor Day and also our anniversary. Unfortunately, quite a few desired restaurants in Detroit were closed - so I decided on Sugar Factory. My wife had previously had a great experience in the Sugar Factory Dallas - so I said why not. Our reservation was made for 7 pm - we arrived at 6:45 to an almost completely vacant restaurant with the exception of a large party that was ending. However, there was no host or hostess to even greet us. I see a guy posted in the inside of the restaurant who I assumed was an employee. I walked towards his area - made eye contact and he didn't even acknowledge me. So I head back to the front with my wife and son and wait for someone to greet us. Finally, around 7:02 - the same gentleman who previously made eye contact with me, asks us if we are dining in. Immediately wanted to say no and walk away (which I should of). However, we decided to stay with our reservation. The waitress finally comes over to our table (7:10-7:15) brings us waters. We quickly realized that this restaurant was working with a single server - she was definitely working hard. However, we finally ordered our food and wait. I ordered a Cajun chicken pasta and my wife ordered a sampler. Our food arrived - well my pasta arrived first around 7:48 pm. My wife's order arrived around ten minutes later. Food review - the Cajun chicken pasta was good. Not great but it was good. My wife's sampler consisted of fried mac and cheese, wings, chicken tenders and fries. The fried Mac and cheese was absolutely tasteless and tasted like the Mac and cheese was made a lot earlier. Wings were actually pretty good, chicken tenders and fries were eaten by our 4 year old son. However, the fries were pretty bland - lacking flavor and seasoning. To say that I was disappointed, would be a huge understatement. I legit feel like I failed my wife and son by bringing us to this spot. We finally get our check on the tablet and I realized a sizable difference in the subtotal and total (they added a 20 percent fee which I confirmed when asking the waitress). That part felt intentional - as if they are hoping that folks bypass that and add an additional 20 percent tip - which is the minimal we normally tip. Additionally, I decided to use the restroom before leaving. This restroom was poorly lit and required my flashlight on the phone. I promise I'm not a senior citizen lol but yes it was badly lit. This place should have been closed for the day. They simply didn't have the staff needed to run the restaurant. I feel bad for the waitress and all the folks who came in after us. I paid nearly $30.00 for two hot chocolates which still had powder at the bottom of the cup. The hot chocolate I wanted was not available, and I wasn't told until ten minutes after waiting for my child and my hot chocolate. We waited over twenty minutes altogether for two hot chocolates, and in that time watched multiple employees settle in the carry-out area, discussing their upcoming work shift (and handing out phone numbers) while actively ignoring us. I almost asked to cancel the order and get a refund, but since my child was waiting we stuck it out. We won't be back, hot chocolate over by the Campius Martius ice arena is less expensive and the same quality with much less attitude. Also- the carry-out area is a mess. We stopped in for the 24k gold burger & were surprised to learn that this location doesn't (& never has) had the ingredients for it! So definitely don't go here for that. We were pretty bummed because it was our sole reason for going. However, the manager & staff COMPLETELY made up for it. I think it says so much about a business when they listen to customer feedback & take it seriously. We have all been in situations where you mention a problem & then are made to feel like you're a bother. It was definitely not that way here :) We also loved our server, Gregory, and the enthusiasm of the waitstaff. The prices weren't as bad as I thought. And the food is genuinely good! We didn't have a single thing that we disliked and actually thought almost everything was better than average. The chicken tenders were my favorite bite (very crispy). Came here for my birthday dinner, and was nothing but disappointed. I sat down at my table and no one came up to greet us. The hostess came over and apologized because she had told the servers we were there, but no one came. About 20 mins later I ordered a cotton candy cosmo and the waiter brought me back a drink with green things floating in it along with random candies on a stick because, "we didn't have any cotton candy so I just put random stuff on there." when we walked into the building they immediately asked "do you have a reservation" and when we said no they just walked away? But when someone else nearby said they had a reservation they got their order taken immediately! We had to wait 25 whole minutes to get asked what we wanted to drink. when we ordered our food it took 35 minutes to be served! the menu prices are utterly ridiculous! 175$ for a 24 karat hold burger! 10$ for a small little baskets of fries. The restaurant smelt like soap! There was a baby crying so loudly that I could hear it when I was exiting the building, instead of telling the child to quiet down they were encouraging the child? every time the child cried the atmosphere would become very awkward. everyone would just stare at the kid in silence. We asked for a stary at the bar and the bartender didn't even know how to work the soda machine and they put Mountain Dew in the stary.
