My husband surprised me with gluten free treats from here on my birthday. I'm so happy he did. The chocolate raspberry cake was delicious. The raspberry was sweet and tart just like it should be, and the chocolate was rich and bold. The two flavors were perfect together. I also love how my cake was decorated. It was very artsy with a clean, sophisticated look. I really liked it. Their gluten free cupcakes were also great. Between the snickerdoodle and the red velvet ... I'd say the red velvet wins because red velvet icing is "straight up delicious". All in all we will be back. This is a great bake shop with wonderful gluten free options. Sugar Lab came recommended by a vendor friend of mine in the wedding industry. We schlepped to Ventura from Encino for our tasting and it was the best tasting cake we tried out of 7 bakeries. Pricewise it was in the middle of the options we tried. We ordered a two tier Lemon cake with lemon curd and swiss butter cream, and a kitchen cake of vanilla bean cake with raspberry jam and swiss buttercream. Our cake was delivered to our venue and decorated with pressed edible flowers I provided. Sadly, our venue never cut into the separate cake to provide two options, but that is on them, both were delicious. We also ordered a dozed gluten free cupcakes and a dozen vegan cupcakes to cater to those guests. I am obsessed with chocolate chip cookies (my MOH and officiant both mentioned my love for them as advice to my husband) and was so happy to have cookies from Sugar Lab at our wedding. They were absolutely perfect: chewy with a slight crisp, buttery, not too sweet, the right balance of chocolate chips, delicious at any temperature (with ice cream, room temperature, or warmed up). Sadly we didn't take too many pictures of our cake because we tore into it because it was that good. What I can say is that I am not a cake person (obviously) and I thought ours was beautifully presented while still having great texture and a good blend of tang from the lemon and hint of cream cheese to balance out the sweetness. It definitely exceeded my expectations of what cake is (again, a cookie person). I would recommend looking at Sugar Lab's Instagram to see more pictures of the gems that they create. I just realized I never reviewed this place for the fail on my son's birthday cake, well here it goes. Now to start off, the reason we came here was because we had already had their cupcakes on many occasions and they were delicious so obviously, we thought hey, the cakes should be awesome right?? Nope! Now the custom decoration was pretty nice, they did a pretty cool job with the lego star wars theme and even though the cake looked nothing like the picture I gave them, it still looked pretty good and my son loved how it looked. But unfortunately that all went out the window when we tried the cake, the bread was dry, unflavorful and just tasted like a cheap box cake. We were scratching our heads because not even the kids ate it.. they were all like we "we don't like this" Kids!! were telling me they did not like cake.. So when the adults got to it they concurred, this was really bad. They asked where I got it and they were as shocked as was I, 150 dollar cake that looks cool but is not eatable?!? Most of the cake went in the trash and I planned on going or calling the place to let them know and honestly never got around to it. After the party I took my son to get ice cream to make up for the cake and he said he did not want to go get cupcakes at that place anymore. Was not an issue at all for Sugar Lab. Secondly, the cake was incredibly delicious! We chose three different flavors, one for each tier, and each was more delicious than the prior. Lastly, we had a snafu the day of the wedding. We left the cake in the sun and the fondant began to melt. The team at Sugar Lab didn't hesitate. They made a special trip back to the bakery and patched the cake. They did such a beautiful job that no one could tell the difference. I cannot recommend Sugar Lab enough. I bought a bunch of mini lemon bars and mini fudge brownies for my book release party. Sugar Lab bakes up the regular ones, cuts them in quarters, and puts them in cute mini-cupcake-size paper cups. Order and pick up were super easy and streamlined. The boxes were perfect for presenting the treats without having to transfer them - which was great for an event that called for keeping things easy and casual. Most important, they were delicious: the fudge brownies moist and sweet but not too sweet, the lemon bars just the right tartness. Horrible establishment! Online says they close at 6pm, their answering machine says they close at 6pm. Drive 20min to get gluten free desserts AFTER calling 45min beforehand asking if their were any gluten free desserts and stating id be coming by then. No ONE EVER mentioned they were going to close early or else I would have saved myself some time and not have even made the trip. Funny thing is I called asking why they're closed early when I just spoke to them earlier and they said there's nothing they can do about it, they're closed but yet I see two ladies inside the shop talking!! Great. I'm actually happy I came because it motivated me to run. The YUMMIEST cupcakes I've tried in a long time. Located in the Victoria shopping center plaza. I see this place every time I drop my son for Tae Kwon Do ( two doors down). Unfortunately they are closed at the times he has class ( after 7pm), so I was super giddy to actually made it before they closed. This is a small location but it's so simply and beautifully decorated. Made me want to seat down with a treat, some coffee and a good book. After following this place on IG forever, finally decided to swing by and check this place out. Finding parking was horrendous and ended up just parking in a loading zone so we could quickly pop in. The place itself is cute albeit very simplistic. I was a bit bummed about the perceived lack of choices but got a vanilla cupcake, red velvet, chocolate and cookies and cream to go. All of them were delicious- the vanilla was my favorite. I was going to get an iced latte but once I saw it was $6 + the fee for Almond milk, decided to pass on that. Will definitely try it one day but that was just a little too much IMO. I will definitely be back but will try to go earlier in the day to see if there is a greater selection of yummies to choose from. read more
