So many bakery cakes these days taste like they were made from a mix and with cheap ingredients. I have wanted to try Sugar Mama's for some time now and during my last trip to Flagstaff, I came here with my sister-in-law. We were walking around downtown Flagstaff and decided to get a sweet treat. At first glance, the outside and inside isn't much to look at. If I wasn't specifically looking for sweets, I might not know to pop in Sugar Mama's. The inside has two display cases with empty counter space between them and a cash register to the far right. Behind the counters is a prep area with storage and a wall of cookie cutters. (They had some interesting shapes!) When we entered, there were two employees working and a customer discussing a custom order. We were greeted with a friendly hello and offer to help. After scrutinizing the delicious looking contents of the two glass displays, I decided on purchasing some cookies. They had several cookie flavors to choose from, but I went with the classic chocolate chip and ginger molasses cookies. Additionally, they had sugar cookies, cupcakes, chocolate covered strawberries and a few other miscellaneous pastries. The cupcakes looked delicious, but none of the flavors stood out. My sister-in-law purchased some chocolate covered strawberries, which she inhaled later that evening. I enjoyed the chocolate chip cookies and my husband loved his ginger molasses cookie. (So did my father-in-law.) Overall, we liked our purchases. If they had more variety of cupcake flavors, I'd love to come back and give them a try. read more

Lexi was easy to work with, willing to make my cake (it was vasectomy-themed in the writing, but not in decoration), and the cake was INCREDIBLE. It looked good, was what I asked for, and she helped me brainstorm a clever decoration idea when my initial plan wasn't going to be possible. The cost was totally reasonable as well. I never like cake, and only got a cake to be festive and for others to enjoy, but I couldn't put it down. I especially never like icing, but this one was great. The cake stayed moist and delicious for days. We finished every last bite, and we've been missing it since then! The Mexican chocolate was exactly the right amount of spicy in the after taste. So I've never actually been to the location but there was an evening on a lonely dirt road when hundreds of people were stuck in a traffic jam and... BAM! There was the owner of this wonderful, majestic business... cookies in hand! She offered them out to all of us who were waiting for the freeway entrance to open up and we basically had a great time eating delicious cookies and enjoying the beautiful night. Sugar Mamas baked the cake for our wedding at Shoshone Point on 10/3, *very* last minute (our original caterer dropped out mid-June). They were very responsive and helpful with the super short deadline. On top of that, the cake was *amazing*. When we took our first bite, we both paused and then kept shoveling cake into our mouths it was sooo delicious! Another fun thing - my husband's favorite cake is German Chocolate, so they made us a cupcake to have in our room at the end of the night (also scrumptious!). I had a horrible experience here! My mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law were in town visiting and we were looking for places to order our wedding cake from. We had just come from "A Touch of Sugar" (whom I recommend!) and had basic questions about cakes. The woman there was very rude and short to my 101 year old grandmother-in-law who was asking for a ball park price, price of delivery, tasting fees, etc. When I showed her the design I was interested in she said "Its never going to look like how you want it".... not a real selling point! I have bought a bourbon pecan pie and a few other little treats from this place over the last few months. The pie I ordered was way too sweet for my tastes, but was decent overall. Sugar Mamas' schedule was tight, but they gladly accommodated my special request and delivered them (not their normal gig). July 2012 Location: Sugar mamas is located off the bustling downtown area in an area that seems to be undergoing gentrification. It seemed a good place to wonder about a bit and see what was being constructed. Atmosphere: inside there is no seating. There re two bakery cases with a mixture of pastries and baked goods, heavier on baked goods. Did not seem to be coffee options. Service: the day we were there the place was being run by one young woman. I asked her if she did all the baking and she said yes. She was efficient but not particularly friendly. Food: There were cookies, cupcakes, brownies, danish, and scones. We ordered an almond cheese Danish, a red velvet and a spicy chocolate cupcake, an orange sugar cookie and a plain sugar cookie, and a brownie. The Danish tasted better than it looked. It was covered with slivered almonds and a light drizzle of frosting. Inside it was not flaky but chewy and flavorful with only a touch of cheese. I heated half the next day, and it was still good. Cookies were crunchy but tasty. The plain had a definite taste of almond extract. The other tasted of orange. Both were frosted with a glaze that was dried on the cookies. These tasted very good, fresh and not stale, but they are not soft. The brownie was very rich and deep, dark chocolatey, quite good with a rich dark chocolate frosting. The cupcakes were the least appealing. While the frosting was good, the cupcakes were dried out and crumbly. read more

We were in Flagstaff last week for our daughter's NAU orientation. We asked a local server about finding the best chocolate chip cookie in town (a fun adventure when we travel). They suggested Sweet Mamas and we were not disappointed! I asked the two ladies/owners what the best cookie was and they suggested the gingersnap cookie (one of their grandma's recipes). That was seriously the best cookie I've ever tasted. Crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside! The choc chip one was equally as good. My husband couldn't make it to the tasting and she was sweet enough to make two mini cakes to take home to him! My family was spending our summer vacation in Flagstaff with my parents, coinciding with my mom's 80th birthday. I told my dad I'd take care of the cake and then tried to figure out where to order one! Sugar Mama's reviews on YELP convinced me to call. Lexi was super patient with all of my questions. We are a family that is obsessed with the "family recipe" for chocolate cake, so I was a little worried about choosing the two-layer sheet cake with one white and one chocolate layer. I should never have doubted! The chocolate was as fabulous as our family recipe, and her ganache filling was SO DELICIOUS. My parents and all of their friends were delighted! I guess because I live above the jamesbeard Tartine in SF I'm a little biased but...We have tried a variety of baked goods from Sugar Mamas which include: Tarts, cookies, cupcakes etc. Everything was good but nothing blew our minds. The baked goods are very rustic and not refined. In our experience it seems you never know what you are going to get. One day the cheesecake crust is thick, one day it's thin and some days the black and white cookies have lemon, some days they don't. It's a crap shoot.
