I was in a pinch for merengue powder. None to be found in our local area. I called and they answered with humans. A welcome delight considering that so many businesses send you to a recoded phone tree. The woman who answered was very helpful and said she they had plenty of merengue powder, so we drive over right away. Entering the store is a lovely time warp to the past. Wonderful baking supply store! The staff are incredibly sweet and very knowledgeable. They have EVERY type of extract, emulsion, sprinkle, and food coloring. I normally find my baking/decorating supplies at Michaels, but often their inventory and selection is limited. I think this is a result of the pandemic. I appreciate Sugar 'n Spice for being my go to store all these years when I've found myself in a pinch. When you want to explore more than just your basic sprinkles and frosting, this place can really get all your creative juices flowing. The store is small, but they carry a large assortment of harder to find items like food coloring in a variety of forms and colors, meringue powder, fondant supplies, and endless sprinkles! It's kind of older, the prices seem slightly higher than the big stores, and I sometimes wonder how long some of the items have been on the shelves...but everything I've bought here has been excellent, and it has saved me many times. read more

This review is long overdue as I have been a customer since 2008. They have the supplies you need to mix, bake, ice, decorate, and package your next cake idea. If you are looking for sprinkles or cookie/fondant cutters they have a large selection. They also have high-quality pre-colored fondant here in a variety of colors. Cake boards, boxes, cake pans, spatulas, pastry bags, tips, gel and paste food color, and more. Sure you can buy most of these items online but sometimes you really need to see things in person to know if it's the exact size or right color. Sometimes you don't know what you need and if you're unsure you can ask the person who is working there. (they are both knowledgeable and helpful, even when I've asked stupid questions) With so many small businesses closing these days (Spun Sugar in Berkley is gone, so is The Cake House in SF) I really appreciate that Sugar'n Spice is still open for business. read more

Interesting, kitschy place; also has been a mainstay in the area for a long time. This review is mostly for their cake decorating class. Pros: The class itself is pretty leisurely and you won't feel rushed. This is a plus -- we were given plenty of time to figure things out. The store itself (even though pretty old) looks to be pretty comprehensive in terms of baking needs and also has a wide variety of sugar flowers in the front case. Cons: The instruction was confusing -- actually, there wasn't a whole lot of instruction which might have been why things were confusing. The instructor (Joey?) works from this podium with a mirror mounted over it but it was definitely still hard to tell what she was doing in detail. It was confusing whether the cakes should be placed top down or bottom down. It was confusing whether to start frosting from the side or top. It was confusing how to ice flower petals. In any case, I ended up with a frosted cake that looks decent to me, but I do wish the instructor had more to offer than showing us briefly what it should look like and what actions will probably produce it. The classroom was somewhat messy -- sink area for cleaning up is pretty cluttered, and there's not a lot of space for anything aside from our group's table. Some things got miscommunicated so the timing of this lesson started after all of us arrived. Parking here is rough -- spots are cramped and the lot seems shared with some other businesses on the front side of the plaza. read more

Despite the bad reviews I read - I balanced it with my longtime Yelp Elite observational experience that more than 50% of businesses that remain viable after unfavorable reviews are often ones that are worth a chance because they usually implement positive improvements. I decided to give them a chance. I visited 4 separate times. I am so happy to share i've experienced consistently warm, friendly, helpful assistance. The ladies who work here are like sweet grandmas ...armed with serious baking skills. I have learned some invaluable tips when I asked specific questions related to products they sell that I wanted to buy. This store isn't as elegant and fancy as a corporate competitor. It shows its age and the signs of modest profit, which I think gives it character. The plus is it is seriously full of an impressive amount of inventory. They carry well known brands like Ateco, CK Products, Satin Ice, and Wilton - to name a few. They also offer classes worth considering - if you don't have any skill or want to gain more skill! The best way I can describe this great mom and pop is whether you are a beginner or advanced home baker - you will find pretty much anything you need to make your special occasion treat! Is this business perfect? No. Have they improved? Yes. Can they continue to improve? Yes - signage inside the shop, and reorganization of their inventory would be the next area to work ...me kindly thinks. But I won't discredit the great customer service turnaround they've accomplished after reading and considering feedback from previous unfavorable Yelp reviews. Really disappointing -- stock is low, with many essentials simply missing from the shelves. Customer service was especially poor -- the clerk was talking loudly on a very personal phone call throughout my visit, and even when she was ringing up a sale of another customer! When I asked for help, the clerk just waved towards the section and was really no help at all. I dropped by this baking supply store with my roommate, who's trying to start her own bakery. Compared to the other baking supply stores I've been to with her, this one is by far the biggest. I'm honestly not much of a baker anymore, so it's hard for me to truly review this shop (I just took pictures to be useful while she browsed), but I got her to list the things she liked: - Great inventory with many items that I haven't seen in other stores (only online). And they're trendy! - Fondant mold set for unicorn cakes (horn, ears, eyelashes) - Sultan piping tips - Extensive cookie cutter collection, with cutters of MANY sizes - Extensive sprinkle collection, color-coded! - Macaron packaging of many sizes - If we lived closer to this store, would be my go-to place for baking supplies, even before Amazon From my perspective, it seems like Sugar 'n Spice has by far the most supplies I've ever seen. 5 stars from us! read more

I bought a cupcake paper here and as soon as I got home and opened the package they were all different sizes so I had to go back and return which is fine. Problem was that they accused me for being a liar that they would never make such a mistake like that. How have I lived so close and never knew of this place? They are super well stocked, lots of variety in their stock as well. Went in looking for 9" pie tins and they have 8", 9" and 10". Prices are good. They also have old school cake toppers, I've been going to cake shops and paying way too much for them to sell to me from their own supplies. This review is for their summer camp that my 8 year niece was signed up for. The 2nd day the instructor told my niece to shut up and shoved her. My niece came home crying saying she didn't want to go back. Her grandma begged her to give it 1 more chance after 2 days my niece decided she would. Again she was traumatized by this teacher by the way she yelled and was extremely rude during the class. When her grandmother picked her up and asked why she is being so abusive with her students the instructor wouldn't let her get a word in. The instructor also threatened that she records the children on video if we wanted to come watch what happened. I would never recommend this establishment to anyone. This instructor should never work with children. read more

Just finished an "intensive" cake decorating class here from 11-4. I would not suggest it. Chef Joey talked the whole time about ransome things. We didn't get to the hands on part of the class until almost 2 hrs into the class. The flower part of the class which is the hardest part of the class didn't start until around 3:45. Also, instead of her talking about how to actually do the decorations she does one in front of the class. Then she come to you, grabs your hand and guides the piping bag instead of actually describing what you're doing so you know understand what you're doing. This is a beginner class but she uses words when she's actually doing the decorations as if you know what the terminology means. She's not a good instructor. I'm pretty sure she's good at what she does but she's a BAD instructor and I believe she's the only one. read more

If the thought of gel food coloring, sanding sugar and cupcake cases in bulk gets you giddy, you need some Sugar 'n Spice in your life! This old school store ain't fancy. Heck, it's not even pretty but if you're serious about baking and even more serious about decorating, that ought not deter you. And the prices here? Loads cheaper than the more boutiquey/gourmet spots. You SO don't need to be buying your sprinkles at Williams-Sonoma when you can get 'em for half the price here. Oh and, I didn't see these myself, but I heard the cashier tell a customer in a hushed tone that they have x-rated cookies cutters here (though they don't advertise this offering.) The store was okay. They don't have a big selection of cake drums, I came here to avoid driving an hr away to Modesto, I should have just drove. I purchased all my items only to find that they charge you to use a credit card, they didn't let my daughter use the bathroom. I didn't pay attention to the fact that they charge an additional 3.99percent to use your credit card? I guess I missed the sign since my daughter was bugging about the restroom would have been nice to have been told. Won't be returning. read more

I recently asked my friend Jen - who was a professional baker for years - where I can get a hard to find baking item. She told me about Sugar and Spice. She did warn me - the little shopping center it's in is "kinda dingy," and when I drove up I could see what she means. The shopping center is a little old. Nothing fancy. But so what. Long as the stuff INSIDE is fine I don't really care. As it turned out I did not find the exact item I needed but they did have a pretty large selection of baking supplies that I am guessing I will never have a clue about how to use in this lifetime. So I'm guessing that makes it a baker's paradise. If you're wondering how to get there from San Francisco, take the Eastmoor Exit in Daly City (as if you're going to In and Out Burger / Krispy Kreme). Head back East over the freeway and then take the next right. It's the little shopping center (i only noticed about 4 stores in it) on the opposite side of the freeway from the Krispy Kreme. It's kind of a pain in the ass that when you try to take a left into the parking lot, it's blocked off by a bunch of cones or something they stuck in the median (I guess to prevent accidents). So you have to go all the way to the next light and take a U Turn (or should I say WAIT to tae a U turn) back into the parking lot. That light is messed up so I had to wait two lights for the next green arrow/U-turn, and swore if it didn't change soon I was going to just go and risk a ticket. It also feels awkward to take a U turn there for some reason... I guess because there's no concrete median. Obviously it's not the store's fault that there's a messed up light in front of their building. The lady who was working there was pretty nice, and helpful. For you baking fanatics - I'd say it's still worth the trip. read more

I was finally able to make it to Sugar 'n Spice!! I wish they were open on Sundays though! This place is a baker's dream! They have cookie cutters in all shapes! They have cake boxes, icing, food coloring, fondant cutters, cellophane treat bags, raspberry filling, all kinds of extracts (root beer, butter, mint chocolate chip, raspberry, and cranberry, just to name a few), cute cupcake liners, candy melts (they stock Guittard), sprinkles, cake stands, edible glitter, an eleven pound bar of chocolate--EVERYTHING! I could go on and on, but you get the point. The store is cluttered and a tad dark, but I didn't mind it. I was too busy oohing and ahhing with my cousin over the different things we found. We left with the items we intended to buy and a bunch of other stuff we didn't need. The location is a bit sketch, but there's parking literally right in front of the store, so it's very convenient. Btw, if you're looking for candy melts, I'd recommend purchasing the Guittard that they sell here even though it's a tad pricy compared to Michaels. Michaels only carries Wilton candy melts, which get all chunky and thick when melted. Guittard, on the other hand, is much smoother. read more

Mom and pop shop for baking and more importantly, fancy baking ;) This is a must-go shop if you're into baking! This store literally and probably has everything!! I've visited this store a couple of times and is amazed by selection of extracts and flavorings. Lemonade, mint chocolate chip, maple, mango, pina colada, are just a few that made me make this face o.O!!!! They also sell cake bases and boxes, cupcake holders, cake stands, cutters, already-made fondant decorations, coloring gels, candy making molds and flavorings, anything and everything you can think of!!! THE BEST PART: they have already made cakes and cake mixes. OMG i bought their chocolate pre made cake, and it was the best decision ever, such a time saver, and it tasted AMAZING. I paired it with their cream cheese filling and the frosting. literally looked and tasted like a store bought cake. no joke! and recently, i decided to make some cupcakes for my coworker's birthday. They close at 7pm, so i was able to go after work, PLUS! Sugar 'n Spice saved my life! Bought their chocolate cake mix, and frosting and was inspired with their flavoring extracts section. I picked this mint chocolate chip flavoring... :O smart choice. Compliments all over the next day!! Thanks Sugar 'n Spice!! The lady at this store is really sweet too. The owner or old lady that works here is rude and has no idea what customer service is. she came out screaming at me for taking up more than one parking spot while I was unloading my car. Im 8 months pregnant and had to take out a carseat to make room for other items , etc. she proceeded to harass me in front of my car and actually got in my face and told me she's been paying for 3 spots for 30 years. I told her that I was going to purchase items from her store and I was trying to hurry and she proceeded to tell me she would refuse service to me. I quickly gathering my things and left. I am horrified in shock and disbelief. Sugar and spice is not that nice. Stay away from that old lady. She's got a serious serious problem. read more

Since my first visit, I've been back enough times to figure out the trick to getting great service here. The lady can be real short if you have questions... but if you let her start up the conversation and you throw in your questions she's quite the helpful saleslady! For example, if I walk in with my sister and we're looking at the cookie cutters, and we're going up and down the aisle. I'll say out loud, "Do you see any cutters that look like Mickey or Minnie?" The saleslady then chimes in with suggestions... Another time I was purchasing a 300 pack of foil cupcake liners and as I paid she started talking about the foil liners, which led me to my questions about foil liners vs paper liners. It's a shame it has to be this way, but my need for baking supplies outweighs my need for outstanding service! read more

Location: Its right off the freeway and super easy to find. It has its very own parking lot (can get full as it shares with other businesses). Staff: There was this older woman, SUPER knowledgeable. I asked her a question and she basically gave chocolate / coloring 101. She must have been a culinary teacher in her time. There is another woman named Joey who turned put to be the owner. OMG super nice, super helpful and even extended to help find products that aren't in the store. Can she just be my bff?!i Products: There so many things to choose from. Things that I may not use but i know others would like. Cookie cutters, cake pans, liners, icings and all. The ready made stuff at the store is bomb for those quick projects and the PRICES are right in this store. Classes: After chatting with the ladies they mentioned classes are offered for all types of baking. Whats cool is they have even done a kids baking camp before. This is the kind of local shop I hope continues to survive and if you are in the area, I hope you support them. I found Sugar 'n Spice out of necessity - I needed confectioner's sugar and Trader Joe's was out - but I will be back next time I need anything baking related. Even when most shops are out of flour and yeast and other baking items, Sugar 'n Spice has them. The prices are amazingly reasonable too - I had recently bought some sprinkles online and wish I hadn't because they had many more types for better prices in the store. I recently got into pasta making and they had the semolina flour I wanted too (no double 00 that I saw but I wasn't really expecting them to). They have larger bags of stuff but they also repackage big bags of things into smaller bags (i.e. 2 lbs of flour or sugar rather than the original 4-5 pound bag). They also have a impressive variety of cake decorations, cupcake liners, baking chocolate, and lots of other things. The owner (I assume) was friendly and helpful. Sugar 'n Spice is a great store, but just like your home ec teacher in high school, it's a little old and a little weird. You need to know that because I was unaware of it the first time around, so it was a bit of a shocker. Don't be put off - it's just like going back in time a few decades, and there's nothing wrong with that. Don't even think of searching for a website for this place...maybe in another 20 years. I used to do all of my cooking-supplies shopping at Williams-Sonoma, and I finally figured out that each time I would bake something it would cost about $1,000. So when I read about Sugar & Spice I was thrilled to have a baking supply store so close to my house. They really do have everything you need, and much more. If you want to duplicate the same circus-themed birthday cake you had for your 7th birthday, complete with figurines, this is the place to look. Disks of chocolate for melting, pastry bags, sugar roses, nonpareils, you name it. I especially love the inexpensive paper cupcake liners, and the fabulous muffin/cupcake pans that I bought earlier in the year. To celebrate the arrival of my new oven (which will be delivered tomorrow), I stopped in for some supplies, and was smitten with the snowflake shaped sprinkles, foil liners, and tiny sugar wreaths. I don't know why, but the song "Toyland" starts playing in my head when I go through the door - I think it always fascinated me in a kind of haunted way. Not a lot of love for Sugar n Spice! I think some people aren't looking hard enough. Yes, some of their stuff is overpriced. But it's stuff that you don't really need, like a ravioli crimper or a cookie cutter in the shape of an octopus. But their ingredients are a total steal. They sell shortening for $2.50 a pound. It's almost six dollars for 20 oz of Crisco at Safeway! And two pounds of their 10x powdered sugar (that has no cornstarch. Do you understand what that means?! That means NO SIFTING! Praise Jesus!) is $2.50 as well. 2 pounds of powdered sugar (WITH cornstarch) over at your local grocery store is about $3.00. Maybe even more. And their Guittard Dutch process cocoa? Brace yourselves for this one. $7.50 for a pound. A POUND. I spend that kind of money on five ounces of the stuff! And their biggest steal of all: their cake decorating classes! It's $75 for five classes. In all the other cake decorating classes I've seen around town, it's usually $75 for ONE class. Each class is two hours long and we learned how to write in both block letters and cursive, we did a bunch of different borders and designs, we learned how to make buttercream blossoms, pansies, and roses, and a ton of other things. I can crank out a cake now that looks just as good as the ones at my local bakery, but for much less money. Joey taught my class, and she's a great teacher! She's funny, talkative, helpful, and is just chock full of cake decorating tips. Some of the tips I can even apply to general cooking and baking, not just cake decorating. I can't wait until the next round decorating classes start and I can take intermediate. It's going to be great! read more

I found this place through Yelp when searching for a baking supply store. I have driven by this place a countless number of times but always thought it was a bakery. I was on the hunt for some plain, round decorating tips. Why the standard stores (Michael's, Beverlys, Sur La Table, etc.) only stock tips with small openings is a mystery to me, as the larger tips are needed for cannoli's, cupcakes, macarons, etc. My attempt to purchase these items online was frustrating as no one seems to list the tip numbers or sizes so it's hard to tell if a "large" was really a "large". Plus the cost to ship those tips are 3 or 4 times the cost of the tip itself! The store is filled to the brim with everything a person could want for making and decorating cakes and cupcakes, and have tools, fondant, icing, fruit and cream fillings, cookie cutters, sprinkles, platters, liners, dyes, powders, gels, etc. The items are more expensive than what can be found online, but unless the shipping is free, you're better of buying these items locally. Plus, it helps to have someone there to answer questions. They also offer classes. I was helped by a young woman and she was pretty helpful and rather friendly. She didn't seem that familiar with all the items in the store but she did try (and succeeded) in helping me locate what I needed.
