I would love to give this place a review I drove 45 minutes, waited 40 minutes outside That's how long we were told we had to wait. I went inside 3 times to check on our reservations. The third time I went inside to check I was turned down and told that we wouldn't be able to be seated due to they had 3 party's they didn't intend on having, they shouldn't have taken us. We watched so many people come out and go in while we were waiting! It would've been different if we didn't have 6 kids that are starving after school! My wife & I dined at Sugar 'n Spice for the first time on Sat., 09.10.2022. Arriving around 7:00 p.m., we had to wait to be seated for a few minutes but not for an unreasonable amount of time given the day & time. Once seated, we were served by Yvette who did an outstanding job! She was cheerful, made great suggestions, timely in all aspects of service, & was a great representative of the business by always speaking well of how things were prepared & handled by the staff. The food was excellent. My sampler included meatloaf, ham, & a boneless pork chop. All portions were extremely generous & I feel one would be hard pressed to find a better value for the price of our meals. I was disappointed that the dinner rolls were not homemade but they were still good. While Sugar 'n Spice IS located in a historic building, it's my opinion the decor is far from adequate in conveying without necessarily having to imitate an early 1800s atmosphere. Early 20th century 'grandma' is not the look I would choose & a deep cleaning would bring about substantial improvement. Such changes would easily bump my rating to 5-stars. A hour of travel for a solid dining experience is something my wife & I are willing to do. I will now add Sugar 'n Spice to our list of worthwhile options. French Dip for the win! If I could end my review with that I would because it honestly was very good, but I should start at the beginning. My cousin took my mother and me here for lunch. Parking was easy to find as there is a sizable lot behind the restaurant. The restaurant appears to be in a very old building converted from something else - a hotel by chance? - and the door handle amusedly gave us some troubles getting in. We were quickly seated in a room that had quilts covering every surface. It appears there was a roof leak at one point as a couple of the quilts on the ceiling had water damage. The table density was a bit tight for my liking as I barely could squeeze in and I am a fairly small person. They sat us beside the only other occupied table but that table started longer than we did so there was no banging of chairs. All that was quickly forgotten when the food came out. The portion sizes were huge! Now while I can't say the fries were notable - they were good but just not notable - the French Dip was incredible. Soft squishy bread, thinly sliced but stacked high pieces of deliciously cooked meat, a bit of cheese, and au jus enough for the sandwich and fries! The water even was good, which was something of note the more I ate in the area. They shut down all of January and February so if you're reading this know you may have to wait! This has obviously changed ownership. This used to be one of our regular favorite spots. The Thursday turkey dinner was a favorite. The servings were always generous and delicious. Went this past Thursday. We didn't recognize any one. The food quality was poor. I requested a little less mashed potatoes and a little more stuffing. We received the dinner with NO mashed potatoes and a spoonful of stuffing that we were charged an additional $3 and change. That was definitely our last visit, ever. read more

An amazing historical place in rural Pennsylvania serving Amish style dishes. I went there for lunch on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon. The place was filled with locals, mostly old families. The internet looks so beautiful and culturally- rich. It's a time machine taking you to the 19th century in an old place once visited and stayed in by the 12th president of the United States. The service was nice and timely. I was seated immediately at a beautiful table in one of the rooms with a lot of cultural and historical vibe . I ordered the soup of the day (ham and beans) and one of the dishes of the day ( creamy chicken with biscuits). The food was so tasty. The portion was huge and I didn't have room for dessert but how I could forgo tasting Amish-style pies? I ordered a whole pie to take out and have with my family tonight. I enjoyed my visit and meal and I will certainly come to this place again in the future and recommend it to my lovely Yelp audience. read more

This is one of our favorite places to eat! Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner, you won't be disappointed. Huge portions, friendly staff and charming decor. Every room is decorated with historic pieces that give you a sense of life years ago. We have tried almost everything on the menu and love it all. The food reminds me of old family recipes. The second floor of this historic building has a gift shop with many handmade items and rooms set up as they were back in the 1800's. The building this is in must be over 200 years old, it feels and smells like it. I'm a commonweath son so I feel at home with this type of setting. All of food is made in the kitchen, none of it is processed. Now the person that reviewed &complained about metal pieces in the sweet potatoes that could have happened but that was not my experience. I ordered the mashed potatoes and the roast beef it arrived with apple sauce. Lets talk about the apple sauce, its was REAL! Not from a can or jar, It was not sweet from mother nature and not from having sugar added to it, it was smashed up apples. It was fresh and wonderful. My kids tried it and I almost had to beat them off with a stick so I could have some. I ordered more for them. The roast beef was not salted and thats a good thing, I really dislike the need to over salt food to the point where if you don't remember to take your rings off you will lose your fingers from the swelling the salt causes. Remember you can always add salt that is sitting on the table. Homemade beef barley soup, my daughter whom is 7 is a soup snob, I make a lot of homemade soup with our pressure cooker and she won't eat canned soup as shes told me "Daddy!, that tastes like crap!". She ate all of her soup and said, "they know soup here" as she was cleaning it up with the last of the table bread. Now my daughter is tall for 7 and has taken dance from the time she was 3 so she understands food and what you put in your body is what you get out. My son had the apple sauce, potatoes and chicken in that order and fell asleep after the potatoes and hes 4, nothing as cute as a 4 year old sleep in a old chair from too much good food. Understand, this place stays open because the local people eat here and they do that alot. The people next to me seeing my son asleep asked me how often I come here and I said this is my first time. They said they come here twice a week and drive 20 miles to do that and proceeded to tell me what is really good on the menu. People reading this review, quality not quantity! This is quality homemade food, wake up and remember what eating good from a place where they are not wearing uniforms and there isn't a "Mcfood" in the name. You only get to live once, make the effort to eat someplace that you can remember the name. I will return with my dollars and daughter so she can have more of the soup. Horrific meal tonight. Stuffed chicken breast dinner was disgusting! The "Amish dressing" and "amish noodles"are a joke The noodles are Pennsylvania Dutch from a bag that you can buy anywhere and the dressing was sweet. They charge extra for the noodles that are NOT homemade. The dressing was very similar to a waffle that breaks down after it sits in syrup for awhile. The chicken was a lump of pure gray white matter sitting on a soggy mush of dressing (if you could call it dressing) I'm wondering what the heck was sweet in the dressing. I don't even want to know. The only oven that piece of chicken had ever seen was a Microwave. To give them credit , the coleslaw was good. I should have taken a picture of my plate because someone should really be ashamed to serve what they did. The rolls were stale .We stood 10 to 12 minutes at the front before any one even came out there to seat us. They were not super busy so I have no idea why it took so long. This place used to be delicious. The waitress never said a word about leaving a full plate of food. Maybe they are just used to it. I predict serving garbage like this won't keep them in business very much longer. No wonder we were able to walk in on a Saturday night with not a soul waiting. I should have known better. There steak was plain, it wasn't awful in my opinion but my husband disagreed. By the way when I say plain I mean legit plain, there wasn't even seasoning on it . I've eaten here and been blown away. I've eaten here and been disappointed. I've been here a probably half a dozen or so times over the years and it's always hit or miss. It's simple food: Amish-style, as they advertise it. It's worth checking out for the experience along though. The restaurant, which is the old Eagle Hotel and has the should-be-more-famous bronze statue of George Washington in his British uniform, oozes with its rich history. Seriously, check it out. Grab a bite, walk around the building, then take a walk through Waterford, which is a nice little town. Even if the food won't blow you away, you'll enjoy the experience. read more

About 25 minutes drive from downtown Erie, PA. The food and ambiance was so cozy and made us feel so at home. Got the Amish sampler with chicken and clam strips (first time having clam served this way!) and meat loaf. The apple sauce for a side was great! You can tell that's homemade too! It is downright dangerous to eat here. My dad actually got a metal spring in his sweet potatoes and when he brought it to their attention they just said that a can opener had fallen apart and several people had complained about metal. Good food, fair prices, but don't bother making a reservation. I just ate there for the first time and upon entering, my family and I discovered our reservation for six was completely lost. The hostess was VERY rude. She did not apologize for the mistake or anything. Besides that we had a great meal. This was my first time at Sugar N Spice in over 15 years. My experience was GREAT. The food was wonderful. I had the meatloaf & gravy which was delicious. I got a side of sweet potatoes which was both HUGE and YUMMY. It was packed with pecans and fresh coconut. The side salad was also perfect. The hostess was very kind and seated us in a timely manner, while exciting us with descriptions of some of the good food. The prices were good and the food was great! I grew up in a restaurant and I know a good place to eat, and fast food big three, is not good food. Potatoes grow underground with dirt did they know that? The Burger Queen joint on 12 and French was a very dirty. burgers on the floor, being feeded to customers!!! Taco Bobs on Upper peach is a hole of filth. Had a cigarette but in my taco, I said something to the manager in a nice way, and they called the cops, Most all fast food is filth, I have fixed the equipment in these holes, Eat home grown beef, and ask why fast food "beef" has stuff that is hard and chewy in it? this was my first visit to the restaurant and I was very pleased with everything! The seating was comfortable, the service was great and the meal was fabulous! Reminded me of meals I would get years ago when they actually have rolls, salad and a vegetable "included" in the meal! I got the stuffed pork chop and mashed potatos and gravy and it covered the plate, not to mention free drink refills. There were 4 of us in our party and we had lots of catching up to do, and they allowed us to continue visiting without feeling rushed out.
