I have only been here twice. It's different and I really like that! They have a nice assortment of local beers. Pretty decent wine selection even. No barefoot or sutter home here. My boyfriend and I shared the pan roasted chicken and the banana pudding. How they put out such amazing food is such a short time is beyond me!! But this chicken... Oh good Lord!!! It's a MUST!! This place had good potential, nice drink options and atmosphere is enjoyable. but... Portions are tiny and the prices are too high for what you get. I ordered the Salmon, it came out over a spoonful of black eyed peas, and that was it for $27. I wasn't impressed with the salmon, a little on the dry side, no amazing tasting glaze or seasoning... just dill! A salad or piece of bread would have helped considering the price. The other meals at our table had flaws as well... grits and shrimp with the tails on???? you have to fish out your shrimp from the grits to so you don't get a mouthful of tail! Another dish we ordered as an meal but listed as an appetizer on the menu... crab cakes. The waiter said, they're about the quarter of the size of a normal crab cake and their are 4. My wife though, OK.. I can handle that. But what he meant was that they were the size of a quarter. It was laughable, and the price was what you'd expect of a full order of crab cakes. I think with some adjustments to the menu, it could be greatly improved, but with those prices, I could not stomach what came out. Overpriced and not very good - once the newness wears off McKinney diners will stop going there (remember the Prison?). I didn't think it was possible to screw up gnocchi but they did. It was perfectly awful! The red wine was served chilled which is a serious flaw. The Sugarbacon appetizer was good and so was the pie but not good enough for a return visit. This is now my new favorite restaurant for dinner in McKinney. Right when you come in the atmosphere is great great music extremely good service is extremely crowded a bartender seek me out to determine if I want to drink. Secondly after he receded after a nice time in the bar we ordered the appetizers and dinner we had the sugar bacon tater tot were both five stars. My wife had a chicken Caesar salad and I had a barbq chicken with mashed potatoes both were superb as well as the service and attention by the entire waitstaff I couldn't recommend this higher and definitely worth checking out on date night Friday Saturday night extremely fun place by the way has a bonus they do have a full TV on in the show room sports games behind the bar which you can watch while you're out on your date ! man/husband bonus Also on a side note after reading some of the other whiny bullsh't reviews I Felt compelled to talk about the manager/owner. I literally did a happy dance through my entire meal because the food was SO flippin good! Stopped in here the night of McKinney's Oktoberfest for some real food before getting the party started and it was the best decision of the night. I had the fish sandwich that came on some kind of bun that tasted like a salted pretzel and opted for the seasoned fries on the side. My fiance had the burger with sugarbacon and bread and butter pickles. Both dishes were a delight to my tastebuds. Didn't try out the bar but it looked like a good place to grab a few drinks. The interior decor is modern and pleasing to the eye. The staff was super friendly. Two of the managers actually looked like Stephen and Derrick from last season's Masterchef, which I found entertaining and amusing in my own weird way. I will definitely be back! :) read more

New little hotspot on the outer edge of the square! It's very trendy and pricey though, so it seems a little out of place given the "mom & pop" nature of the rest of the square. I had worn shorts and a cute tank top but felt very under-dressed....on a Tuesday. The food is delicious, but you will pay a lot for a little. They have about 9 signature drinks. The drinks are all made with fresh fruit & herbs; no pre-made mixes, so give the bartenders some slack. I was told that they will soon have a food/drink happy hour menu, but we were not so fortunate on our visit. The owner, Chef, management and staff are doing this place right! You can see the glass and metal enclosed immaculate kitchen from the main dining area. You can't see the food preparation but you certainly get the sense that there's some serious culinary creativity going on in there! We ordered a few cocktails: Bee Sting, Country Grammar and Poodle Skirt..perfectly prepared. As an app, we ordered red pepper roasted hummus; excellent with the grilled bread! After that we had chicken spinach salad, tender moist chicken breast, the citrus vinaigrette was not overly vinegary. The hickory smoked turkey sandwich was great with the signature sugar bacon. My favorite was the fish sandwich made with striped bass with dill tater sauce and toasted sesame seeds. The fries on both sandwiches were coated with a garlic salt and pepper condiment; addicting! We visited Sugarbacon for the first time last night. It has been opened only 2 months. The decor is creative, beautiful and comfortable. The photos don't do it justice...you have to see it in person. The staff works like a well-oiled machine. The food is outstanding. We tried the sugarbacon appetizer which is so delicious. My son inhaled the tater tot appetizer...luckily we got a taste. The pork chops, short ribs and steak special were top notch. The butterscotch pudding and chocolate pie were delectable desserts. The food is on par with the best restaurants in Dallas (we've tried them all). Everything on the menu looks so good and we can't wait to try all the dishes! Went to Sugarbacon for lunch with a friend. We shared the Tuna Tartare and it was small but delicious. Served with tortilla chips, this dish came with tuna, guacamole, and a crab dip. All were delicious and I could have eaten more! We both had the Shrimp and Grits. The cheese grits were smooth and creamy and were perfect. The shrimp and Sugarbacon topping were outstanding. I would definitely get them again. I had the Wild Arugula Salad and my friend had the Wedge Salad. Both were so good, light and fresh. I think Sugarbacon is a great addition Downtown McKinney and I can't wait to go back and try some of their other amazing dishes. read more

My husband and I took his parents here for lunch while they were visiting Dallas. We had a nice time. Clean restaurant, knowledgeable staff. I had the Louie salad, which was a pleasant surprise. I decided to try this place for dinner with my wife. So we visited it on the evening of October 24th. We started out with the signature appetizer the sugar bacon. I thought it was flavorful but the pieces were too large. I would double servings and make the sugar bacon cubes half as large. As others have pointed out, it is awkward trying to eat it.. My wife tried the farm salad which she thought was the best part of the meal. The ingredients were fresh, and she thought it would be a harbinger of a good entree. She was mistaken. I tried the short ribs and enjoyed the flavor of the sauce. The ribs were very tender. The presentation was nice, and the vegetables were cooked properly. My wife ordered the shrimp and grits, and I did sample them since I almost ordered them. Over the last few years, grits have become very trendy so I always enjoy seeing different takes on them. I have really seen some great things done with either grits or polenta. However these grits were uninspired. I did not find out the cardinal sin of the meal until after we left. My wife told me that the shrimp were perhaps the most overcooked shrimp she has ever been served. I wish she would have told me before we left. The waiter had been very cordial and attentive, however no manager ever came by to find out how the meal was. I was going to leave an email on the web site, but the only contact email I saw was for media inquiries. That night we did not have drinks or a dessert, and the meal ended up being around $70.00 before the gratuity. I thought the atmosphere was nice. We did come at a busy time and sat outside. It really is a beautiful place, but at that price point my expectations are that the food would be cooked properly. I came home and read some of the reviews, and I would really like to see the kitchen tighten up and see this, or a place like it, make it in McKinney. My dear friend introduced us to this place, and we absolutely LOVED it! I've been here 3 times for lunch and dinner. There are a decent amount of parking spaces in front and off to the side of the restaurant, which is convenient. The ambiance is chic and casual. We usually asked to be seated in the"outdoor" room - perfect on a summer day, where you can enjoy natural light but still have the comfort of AC. We've also sat in the room on a cool, Autumn evening, and it was nice as well. We always order the Sugarbacon appetizer - sweet, tangy and melt-in-your-mouth good! The first time we had it, i remembered it was a bit crispier on the outside, and I think they used a different type of bread for the toast. Maybe they modified the recipe, but both versions are equally good (to me). I also order their French-pressed coffee (good for 2 servings) regardless if I'm there for lunch or dinner. The aroma, flavor, and temperature are on point. The service is excellent. I shared a wedge salad with my friend and they divided the portions equally for us, refilled our water and drinks promptly, and brought extra sugar for my son's iced tea when they noticed it was running low. My son loves the SB burger with fries. My husband likes the shrimp and grits. The portion seemed a little small but tasted really good! Will definitely be visiting this place again! read more

This place is classy, good, friendly and trendy..... We were met with a handshake from one of the managers. Didn't have to wait at all. Our waiter was very knowledgable and very attentive. Excellent service. Watermelon crush and whiskey smash. Excellent drinks. You could taste all of the flavors all at once but with enough alcohol for a cocktail. Went with the sugar bacon appetizers since that is the name sake. Scrumptious. Excellent flavor and tasty. What a way to start out the meal. The wedge salad was predicted to be large so they split it for us. That was cool. Rather enjoyable. I would've preferred a tad more of the dressing since they nailed it. I wanted more of that amazing dressing. Catch of the day with the wife and pan seared chicken. The chicken was done in a way that there was not one part of it that was dry. Amazing. This is a great trendy new restaurant located in downtown McKinney. The layout of this new joint is wide-open with a rustic-contemporary feel. I started out with a yummy cocktail called Country Grammer which was very delightful for a summer time drink. It was an infused soda with so many flavors which i highly recommend. I had the pan-roasted chicken dish which was quite good and the garlic smashed potatoes were spot on. My guest had the burger/fries which he enjoyed very much. The fries were very unique and tasty. I couldn't figure out what they did to them. We finished off with the sinful chocolate hazelnut icebox pie which was out of this world. Our waitress, Ashley was a Superstar. I truly enjoyed my visit here. The weather was perfect so I sat on the patio. The patio over looks one of the main streets as well as there fresh basil garden. Service was great, our waiter was attentive and the manager stopped by afterwards to see how we enjoyed everything. I wasn't too impressed with the drink I ordered because the flavor was very watery. I think next time I'll just go for the bourbon flight. For $20 you can get a pour of 3 fantastic bourbons. The food was pretty tasty but there was temperature issues. Nothing came out piping hot. Upon entering the restaurant I was immediately greeted by the hostess. The decor is very nice and the restaurant has a very comfortable vibe. Now onto the food...For lunch I ordered the grilled shrimp Caesar salad, a nicely presented medium salad with four grilled shrimp. The shrimp were a nice size, but they lacked flavor other than the occasional sear from the grill and even slightly over cooked. Eh. We were really excited to try "the" new restaurant on the square in McKinney, especially after hearing all the hype surrounding this place. I'm really hoping that we hit it on an off night and they'll work out some kinks, but we were sadly disappointed at our first experience. Our party of six had two halibut specials, two pulled pork sandwiches, a fish sandwich, and shrimp and grits. We also got the sugar bacon appetizer. Out of all that, the best thing were the fries. Seriously. Nothing was outright terrible, but everything was mediocre and somewhat bland. The cocktails were also disappointing. For $10, I expected more than an oversized shot glass. Two of us switched to wine after one tiny cocktail and they are VERY skimpy with their pours. Service was just ok. Our server was nice, but I think he had too many tables to take care of. He had to be prompted to tell us about the specials, and we had to chase him down after he took one person's drink order and then took off without a passing glance at the rest of us. We'll probably give them another try, just because the outdoor space is really nice, but we'll wait a while and hope they work out the kinks. read more

My wife and I ate here for the first time last night and all I can say is I give them a perfect 10! Everything was absolutely amazing the wine list is great and their signature cocktails are a must try. Dinner was absolutely delicious with very generous portions. Waited for 3 weeks to venture over here and heard so many good things but not sure we would be back. Sat for 10 minutes before any contact from waitstaff. Bless her heart, she was new so possibly a little nervous. She didn't know the bar selection, I had to go get my own drink from the bar, Redbreast whisky over one cube, not a difficult drink. The signature dish of Sugarbacon was completely fat. I do realize it is pork belly but I would like a little meat and not entirely fat. Dinner salad came out with meal, of which I'm not a big fan. The short rib was good, a touch fatty, but I ate most of it. Potatoes were dry. My wife had the roasted chicken and she commented the best part of the dish was the Brussels sprouts. Chicken was dry and she didn't eat much of it. The managers were wonderful in their apologies and willingness to make things right if possible, thus the 3rd star in the rating as opposed to just 2. I would love to give this a second chance but not sure I can take the chance again. read more

Waiter had no idea about the happy hour menu (claimed there wasn't one and didn't believe us until the manager found it), waiter didn't bring us silverware, didn't check in, forgot drinks at one point, brought the wrong order... And we were the only table!!! Other servers got involved and acted like WE were the ones being difficult. My father walks with a cane and kept getting up just to get attention. We used to LOVE this place. But last night that changed. First, we're still confused who our waitress ever was, we had 3 shuffle around. We sat outside and ordered drinks. About 20 minutes later, Shannon, one of our waitresses asked if we ever got our drinks. Nope. We finally got them but had ordered apps with the drinks and still had to wait on those. The whole waitstaff that was waiting on the people outside could not figure out who's food and drinks went to whose tables. This is where it gets bad. Our food finally comes, and my first bite has a medium length black hair in it. Show a waiter and she takes it back. Manager comes out and said "Um I grew up on a farm and this is a strand from a corn husk", and sets my food back in front of me. My friend went to the restroom and passed by the cooks, said one had hair the same length and color as the one on my place and it was not netted. Regardless if it was a hair or corn husk, the manager was RUDE. Do not make fun of me for pulling out a hair from your food, and just set my food back down in front of me. Shannon, our amazing waitress, asked us how all the food was and I told her. (We had 3 so she wasn't a part of the hair fiasco). Well she ended up bringing free dessert and a gift card, which was the right thing to do and I highly recommend her. She should be the manager. I have never been treated so poorly when I am a paying guest. They need to go back to their roots, cut ties with the manager, and get their heads out of their snooty you know where, because their overpriced food is not that great and they are clearly sinking and failing to compete with the other hairless, corn huskless restaurants around them. read more

Yes. Yes. Yes.... I am a fan! So....My friend and I needed a place to go on a whim. Hungry...Yelp, what shall eat that has good reviews in Downtown McKinney. Sugarbacon appeared near the top of the list. So there we went and we were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was hip but casual, the food was good and the service was quite friendly (thank you, Armando). Let's talk about the food and drinks a little more though because, to be fair, there were some ups and a down. The down (so that we can get that out of the way)... Dessert. Don't get me wrong, it was edible. It just wasn't great. We ordered the hot fudge brownie and butterscotch banana pudding which were underwhelming. I must say, however, the dessert experience was much improved when the manager, Amanda, came by to check on us, listened to our feedback and when our server replaced the hot fudge brownie with an actual "HOT" fudge brownie. Um, yes, ask for Armando when you go. The appetizers and main entrees were YUMMY. I have never had fried green tomatoes in this way...chopped (instead of sliced) and topped with crab. The crab was a really nice touch and the creamy topping was the perfect flavor. The signature appetizer, Sugarbacon, was a twist on my previous savory experience with pork belly. This was a sweet barbecue-flavored pork belly. Another unexpected touch which I enjoyed. Oh...and we both got the Shrimp & Grits. These, too, had a barbecue flavor with perfectly cooked shrimp and ...pork belly. Yep! How was it... let's put it this way, my friend...she left not a morsel in her bowl ... Thumbs up. Not only is the food and service phenomenal at this restaurant, but the GM of Sugarbacon generously donated a $100 gift certificate - without even being asked for a donation - towards the research for a cure for Leigh's Disease. A local family in McKinney has a three year old son who is dying of this genetic disease, so the neighbors got together and hosted a fundraising event to raise funds towards the cure. My father went into Sugarbacon and told the GM about this cause, and without hesitation, the GM (I am so sorry that I don't have his name) handed my father $100 gift certificate, a very nice bottle of prosecco, and various other items to raffle off at the fundraiser. I have a medical exemption and cannot wear a mask and this place literally discriminated against and harassed me about it. They were horribly rude and disrespectful. They didn't even have ANY tables socially distanced and a table next to ours had 8+ people and they were all up and hugging one another as each person arrived to their party. Maskless. And yet I got scolded like a 5 yr old over my medical condition where I cannot wear a mask to protect against this flu like cold. We live in McKinney and are "regulars" on the downtown dining scene, and we think that Sugarbacon is a great addition to our set of local dining options. Restaurant is located in a lovingly-converted old gas station building, and decor is funky industrial / chic - reminds us of the many fun little places in the SOMA area of San Francisco (where we lived forever before moving to McK a few years back), and definitely feels different than anything else in McKinney. Wonderful covered outdoor seating area in front of the restaurant - we can't wait for cooler weather to try it out! Drinks first = artisanal cocktails are well-executed and refreshingly NOT TOO SWEET. Nice wine list, including several decent by-the-glass options that make it easy for individual diners to pair their own courses without having to "compromise" on a whole bottle for the table. Our favorite menu items include the signature Sugarbacon appetizer (very tasty pork belly cubes seated atop toasted croutons, nicely contrasted with tangy sweet pickle slices); the tator tot appetizer (delicate hand-formed "tator tots" interestingly matched with shreds of BBQ pork and a smear of pimiento cheese - we disagree with the earlier reviewer who described this fun dish as "standard bar food," because it's way too thoughtful); braised short ribs and the smoked pork chop (both of which are nothing fancy, but are perfectly-executed examples of solid comfort food); and the parmesan gnocchi (light pillows of pasta wonderfully contrasted with a slightly bitter melange of vegetables and greens). A shared pot of French-pressed coffee and the rich butterscotch banana pudding with 2 spoons is our favorite way to close the evening. We've always found the service to be efficient and pleasant, yet spirited in a very fun way (i.e., the service folks at Sugarbacon actually seem to ENJOY working with each other, which comes through in their interactions with each other and the patrons) - so if you prefer your servers to be staid, reserved, and boring, best go elsewhere. (Special shout-out to the great bartenders at Sugarbacon, who have especially fun personalities and have made some really good recommendations to us to try new things - three cheers for eating dinner at the bar!) Our only criticism of the place is that the price point seems a bit high, especially for the entrees. I tried Sugarbacon last week with my boyfriend. The hostess was friendly and seated us quickly. Our server was friendly and helpful. My boyfriend said that his BBQ brisket & cheddar enchiladas were good, but I can't say the same for the mushroom bolognese. It was oddly spicy, even burning my lips. The carrots in the sauce were still crunchy, and I had to separately request the parmesan cheese that was supposed to come on top. When we tried to order the butterscotch pudding for dessert, we were told they were out. While everyone seemed friendly, I still have a bit of sticker shock since my pasta was $17, and it wasn't very good. Not sure we will return. read more

When we arrived, the restaurant was at 10% occupancy. Still, we were seated right next to another couple (So much for social distancing) with no partitions in between the tables. As the evening progressed, so too did occupancy...far beyond 50%! The ambiance felt more like a bar than a restaurant. The food was mediocre. We had the sugar bacon pork belly and watermelon to start. It was good, not great. I expected this to be top notch given the name of the restaurant. Meh. For the first entree, we had the mushroom bolognese. It was okay but not a great substitute for an authentic bolognese. Service was slow on a Monday night. Wife got tired of waiting and went to the bar to order a drink. Pork belly appetizer was great. Spinach and artichoke dip was nothing special and I would not order that again. Had the steak and taters and it was nothing special. The plate had some kind of citrus the did not work with either the steak or potatoes, not sure why that was even there. Would not go out of my way to return, except for the pork belly. read more

What a fantastic experience from beginning to end. We started with the sugarbacon appetizer. I ordered the roasted chicken, my wife ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and the kids both had hamburgers. All of the meals were exceptional. Very high quality ingredients and and excellent presentation. Mallory was our server and she had the knowledge, experience, and high level of attention that you would get from a 5-star, big-city restaurant. The decor is likened to a hip, trendy uptown restaurant with a rustic, cozy feel.
