This review is based only on the e-mail seeking a quote for a cake. I realize the real money is made with wedding cakes. I e-mailed for a quote for a graduation cake. What I got was an e-mail response about how much cakes start out at as if I could not possibly afford to order a cake. I responded that the price was good. I did not hear back again till I was already on my way, about a week later, to order the cake at another bakery. Another bakery who actually responded to my e-mail with an estimate and had cake samples for us to taste too. I didn't spend over $1,000 on a cake like some brides, but if I am spending about $600 (what I ended up spending elsewhere) I'd think that is enough to warrant a little service. My experience is if you're not spending enough, they do not even want your business at Sugarlips Cakery. Good to know! read more

This confectionery is absolutely amazing, it smells amazing when you first walk in, and everything looks fantastic. I ordered a dozen(+) cupcakes for my friends, all adorably Halloween themed and coupled with delectable flavors. My main goal though was a last-minute birthday cake for my best friend who is turning 21, and Sugarlips was went above and beyond with their customer service. The gorgeous cake they had on display was quickly adorned with the most beautiful flowering, and personal message, and I was actually speechless. Next time when I need something specific, I'll do the proper thing and order ahead of time, but my future business was well earned today. I ordered a cake from Sugarlips back in April. I had a great first time experience and my cake came out beautiful. The woman that helped me was very nice, helpful, and very excited about my cake/ideas. I went in today to order a cake for my daughter's birthday; and it was a totally different experience. The women behind the counter seemed very dismissive and uninterested. I was told that I couldn't use a certain character because it resembled Harley Quinn too much; and the rights to Harley Quinn are reserved to DC. (*I was also told later via phone that copyrighted characters cannot be recreated with icing or fondant).... I checked Sugarlips Cakery's Instagram/ website and they featured not one, not two, not three, but FOUR cakes that resembled "recognizable copyrighted characters"... Perhaps I just caught them on the wrong day???.. Maybe Sugarlips has some secret policy unbeknownst to me about when/ how they decide to follow the laws of copyright...??? Again my first experience was awesome, I felt like the baker I worked with the first time around was very nice, helpful, and passionate about my ideas. Got a 6" round cake for $49, it was for my boyfriend's birthday, he absolutely loved it, said it tasted perfectly moist and sweet. His family always gets their cakes from here too. The only downside is even with the picture I sent in of the infinity gauntlet they got the colors of the infinity stones wrong but because we went to pick it up right before they closed I didn't bother asking them to correct it. I planned my daughter-in-law's baby shower and wanted make things as Covid safe as I could think of (outside at the park, lots of gloves and food tongs for handling food). I used to manage a bakery and know the difference between high-quality, from scratch ingredients and something made from a mix. My son and I went in last Saturday to make a cake purchase for my son's birthday. I had previously purchased two cakes from this bakery in the past. To say the service on Saturday was rude is an absolute understatement. The person handling the cake order did not provide any type of direction nor pricing on the cake. The service was rushed and the person appeared to be annoyed when any questions were asked. After my son had picked out what he wanted, I was absolutely astonished when the person taking the order indicated that the cake was $180 for 30 people. When my son asked for a cup of water with his cupcake, the person at the counter was rude after a seemingly large purchase -- I had also ordered a coffee which was finally offered to me as I was walking out of the bakery after being there for over 15 minutes. My sister went in today to make changes to the cake which is not scheduled to be ready until Saturday and was told that because I had already paid in full, there could be no changes made to the cake. It was further told to her that if we were to go somewhere else it was fine because I had already paid for the cake. Next cake order, I will go elsewhere. read more

Sugarlips absolutely saved the day for my wedding in October. After finding out a month before my wedding that the person making my cakes could no longer do it, I panicked a little and then sent my sister on a research mission to find a new bakery. I was especially worried because I wanted a pretty non-traditional cake (5 single tier cakes of different sizes with different designs in ivory buttercream) and was not sure I'd be able to find a new baker who could create what I was looking for. By the time we got in touch with Sugarlips they were so accommodating and nice about my situation. Not only that, the cakes they created for me were so beautiful (and delicious!) that it was like my original plan never changed. They also worked closely with my florist to add some flowers to the tops of the cakes and the end result turned out beautifully. I would recommend them to any of my friends or family. read more

I read the reviews when I came in and expected to be blown away, but the cupcakes were just average for me. The decor inside was incredibly cute, colorful, and inviting. I had asked what the most popular flavors were so I picked triple chocolate, red velvet, salted caramel and a seasonal coconut. The cake itself was a tad dry in my opinion. The frosting amount was appropriate (I hate it when they overdo frosting) but there were no flavors within the cake itself that popped out. The coconut seemed like the only thing that made it coconut was the flakes on top. It all comes down to personal taste for cupcakes- I don't like cupcakes that are overly sweet, and they have to be incredibly moist, so I still prefer My usual spot in Phoenix. If I was told about the potential change upon ordering I would have waited to pay at pickup. Needless to say, after complaining all I got was a "sorry the policy is on our website". I didn't order the cake from the website I ordered in in person, I told them. The policy was not disclosed to me at the time of ordering and pre-paying. "Sorry" was all I got in return.
