Local restaurant in North Oaks with good reputation. Our first time there. Went on a Tuesday early. Several families were already there. One server, one sushi chef. They handled the place efficiently. Quiet nice atmosphere. They had bar service. The meal was excellent. Everything we had was fresh and very well prepared from the Miso Soup to the salad with ginger dressing. Also had pork dumplings and shrimp and salmon sushi. Shrimp Tempura appetizer was excellent. The sushi was great. Well done rice and salmon that melted in your mouth. It was refreshing to have a meal that was worth the bucks. Highly recommend. We will be back for a second take. read more

We've been going to Suishin for years. It's our go to local spot for sushi and Japanese food. We are grateful to have such a wonderful restaurant so close to home. You'll never have to wait for a table, but If you're in a rush, the service can be a little slow at times especially around the dinner hour. They only have one or two waiters, but if you can be patient, the food is excellent and, for us at least, the location right off Hwy 96 couldn't be better. During the summer we love to order some saki or a Chardonnay and enjoy the patio seating while we wait for our food. We usually start with a seaweed salad and shrimp tempura appetizer followed by the North Oaks roll, lightly fried and with a little heat from the peppers - delish. The chicken teriyaki is a generous portion served with rice and a choice of soup or salad. The bento boxes are just as you'd expect them to be. Delicious teriyaki style salmon, chicken or beef with soup and salad. If you want more of a rice dish, the Katsu bowls are a good choice and a ton of food. The sushi is as good as anywhere in the Twin Cities.The North Oaks roll is their signature dish, but all the rolls hit the mark. If you are in the North Oaks/Shoreview area, I highly recommend Suishin. read more

Do yourself a favor and give this place a try. It's absolutely one of those hole-in-the-wall finds that you would never even consider trying if you were just driving past the strip mall this is located in, with its unassuming appearance and generic red-lettered signage. Once you step inside though you'll easily find a nice, quiet restaurant with fantastic service and food. My wife had several sushi rolls which were all very good and very reasonably priced - their 6-to-8 piece rolls were generally in the $5-$6 range. I had a traditional sukiyaki, and wow this is the best sukiyaki I've found in the Twin Cities. It's one of my favorite dishes - beef, tofu, glass noodles, mushrooms, and cabbage simmered together in a sweet soy broth. The flavors are spot on for what this dish should be, and I would absolutely recommend it to anybody. My wife commented on how nice and quiet the restaurant was, with some minimalistic Japanese music in the background and plenty of soundproofing to block out the sound from outside. I'm calling this one 3.5 stars, slightly above average. This was my first time trying Suishin. The restaurant is a quaint little place. The interior is very stylish and inviting. Right away, I noticed that the customer service was excellent - polite, efficient, friendly, and on top of everything. I started things off with hot green tea, Yakitori (chicken skewers) and Clam Soup. The Yakitori was good. I was happy that they didn't overcook the hell out of the chicken. I removed most of the teriyaki style glaze since it tasted like it was loaded down with sugar. Great flavor though. The clam soup was disgusting and it tasted, literally, like old wet dish rags. I've never tried Japanese style clam soup before. So I don't know if this is how it's supposed to be...or if it was poor execution of the recipe. Whatever the case, it desperately needed some salt and some more flavor to cover up the sweaty sock vibe. After the apps I went with 2 styles of tuna based sushi rolls. BTW Suishin has WAY less sushi roll options than the other places I've been to the past several months. My tuna roll was good, standard stuff. I didn't care for the spicy tuna that much. It actually had visible chunks of tuna. But I have to admit, I like the spicy tuna recipes that use the chopped tuna salad type recipe with crunchies and yum yum sauce. I couldn't find any other tuna rolls on the menu without some other species of fish so I stuck with my 2 choices. I would have loved at least one more type of tuna roll. Maybe a "crazy tuna"? Perhaps a "mango tuna"? Or maybe a "Godzilla" roll with tuna? Personally, I probably wouldn't go back to Suishin. But that's only because of my carnivore eating style and the only fish I really love is tuna. For most people, I think Suishin is a good option if you want sushi or some sort of stir fry. I don't think it's a destination spot worth a drive, but it's a good choice if you happen to be in the North Oaks area. -Maxx read more

Wow this place has great prices on sushi but I think the surprise for me was just how tasty the salmon bento box was. Moving forward I will be coming here and ordering all their bento boxes. At first I didn't think that their would be enough sushi for me which is why I went with the sushi platter but I was wrong. You get started with a salad and miso soup and then the bento box comes out. On top of that you get a bowl of rice and sauce to dip you tempura in. The tempura was perfect. Crispy and not to think. You had shrimp, sweet potatoes, and broccoli in the batter and wow was it delicious specially when dipped in the sauce. The salmon was perfectly cooked and their was a sauce in the bottom that kind of tasted like teriyaki sauce. The sushi roll was a California roll and you had a sea weed salad that was tasty. I had a massive sushi craving in the middle of the work week...well that and I had a craving to get the hell out of the office and away from people. I found this place on yelp of course. Walking in it was dark, clean, and nearly empty. Uh oh. This is not a good sign, where are all the peeps at? There was only one other table with two people on a lunch break as well. Luckily for me this also meant I was going to get served quickly. I was seated and after a glance at the menu I ordered the fried tofu in dashi and lunch sashimi platter. My tofu came first, perfectly crispy, and the dashi was a wonderful savory umami flavor, I wanted to drink it. My sashimi selection was thick, tender, buttery, and fresh. My mom & I went on a Sunday, right as they opened at 4pm. The restaurant is lovely & they have a nice shaded garden patio, that's where we sat. We ordered: - Tako Yaki = fried bread balls of yummy seafood goodness! - sushi = delish - Yose Nabe = served in a big iron pot! Very good! I got take-out from here recently and was decently impressed. I got the chirashi bowl which doesn't look quite as pretty in a styrofoam box but still tasted delicious. There was a nice variety of sashimi and the salmon in particular was very fresh. The only fish I didn't like that much as the tuna as it tasted like it had been thawed and lacked much flavor. The tamago and other garnishes were quite good too. Price was on par with most sushi places. Will be back to try some other sushi combos! read more

Food is pretty bad and the service is hardly there. We came in during happy hour and the restaurant was pretty empty. We ordered a few items on the happy hour menu to start and then a couple of rolls to share on the regular menu. The sushi rice is kind of cold and hard, so not freshly made. All the sushi had a giant piece of rice with a very thin piece of fish on it and the fish wasn't even fresh. The rolls were small and was swimming in mayo or whatever other sweet super salty sauces they were using. Things did not taste very good at all and prices were pretty high. Our waters and tea were not refilled at all, had to ask several times. Bathrooms are clean and parking was easy since there was no one at the strip mall. read more

Ambiance: Well the restaurant was very empty at prime time on a Friday night it did give me some time to take in the atmosphere more. Overall the restaurant was nice. However, because they weren't busy only random tables had settings on them which seemed odd to me, I feel like it should be all or none it just accented that they were not busy. They do have a full bar area with seating as well as seating at the sushi counter and tables and booths. Food: we had never been here so we ordered a hodgepodge of items to try some of everything. We started with the edamame which was cooked perfectly. We then had the pan fried pork gyoza which were good but not to die for, I've had better dumplings. We then had a few sushi rolls, we tried the spicy tuna roll, the dragon roll and the garden roll. The dragon and garden roll were adorable in appearance however I think that's why we paid so much for them (they are way over priced sushi rolls) that being said I really enjoyed my garden roll it had tempura vegetables in it. One of the best veggie rolls I've ever had. My mom said her dragon roll was good but the pieces were huge and she prefers smaller pieces of sushi. As for the spicy tuna we both agreed it was good, but it was a lot of tuna and little rice which we didn't love. Lastly we had the tempura sea bass with tempura veggies, this also came with a bowl of miso soup and some white rice. The miso soup was very good and flavorful. The tempura sea bass and veggies were delicious and not greasy like some tempura is. Overall, I really liked the garden roll and tempura sea bass the best. However Even after our 30 dollar Groupon we owed almost 50 dollars. The food is way over priced so although it was good I don't know that I will rush back as I needed that much food to fill up here. read more

Upscale Japanese restaurant, hidden in the same strip mall as Taste of Scandinavia Bakery (yes, unlikely neighbors), but well worth the effort to find it! Their delicious Volcano Roll lived up to my expectations! Crunchy, spicy, to-die-for sushi! After we split the Volcano Roll, we tried the Seafood Yose Nabe (think Japanese Seafood bouillabaisse) tableside! What a wonderful experience! We loved eating the seafood, beef and chicken as it cooked in the pot on our table! The ONLY drawback was the small portion of rice for the two of us had to share but maybe only one person orders this as their entree. Great food, clean and sleek atmosphere, good service... This place is a wonderful little surprise considering it's in a strip mall in the 'burbs. The last time we were here, we thoroughly enjoyed their lovely patio area. Some places just stick you out on a sidewalk and call it good, but this place has really pleasant outdoor seating. The interior is very quiet but also nice. We had the combo platter (a great option if you like to try different kinds of sushi!), a rainbow roll, miso soup, and Riesling. It was excellent as always! The Riesling is on the sweeter side and we think it pairs well with sushi since we're not big sake fans. As far as cooked options go, their teriyaki is also great. It comes with tons of meat, as well as rice, broccoli, and soup or salad. The beef is tender and not overcooked, a rare feat in a lot of restaurants. Service is friendly, and the prices aren't unreasonable for what you get. Can't wait to go back and try more of their sushi, including the suishin roll, as well as the katsudon, yosenabe, and suikiyaki. read more

This place is my go-to take out place. I absolutely love the food here. They are polite, clean, and quick. Want dinner in 20 minutes. Done. The sushi is always good and they do well with customizing things to your liking. The North Oaks roll is our absolute fav and I feel like they use a considerable amount of raw fish so it is well priced. This is coming from someone who eats Billy's sushi on the regular and North Oaks roll is a worthy competitor. Finally came here on a Friday night. I was craving sushi and husband said OK let's go. I thought to make a reservation for 6:45pm thinking it would be packed but it wasn't. There were 2 other dining parties when we arrived. We were shown to a nice booth right next to the window. We ordered 2 rolls for appetizers. The Number 9 roll (shrimp tempura inside, salmon outside) and the Philadelphia (salmon and cream cheese). We were clearly going for a lot of salmon! The fish itself was super fresh tasting and delicious. For entrees: I got the Salmon Bento Box and he got the Chicken Bento Box. It was good, but could have used more "items" for the price we paid. I like how in other places they include those little shumai dumplings, so good. Usually I like seaweed salad but this one just wasn't as enjoyable as it could have been. However, the sushi roll included in any bento box is usually a generic California roll variety, but this one had a Shrimp Tempura inside and it was great! Drinks: I got a Hendrick's Gin martini with blue-cheese stuffed olives. I asked the bartender to make me something pretty in a cool looking glass and he did. Husband got a Sapporo Japanese beer. Small, cozy and quiet. Enjoyable dining experience. I could probably go for more "ambience" next time but overall it was a good evening! read more

I am so happy to be able to find another great sushi restaurant! Bonus point as it is close by! We had a lovely dinner on a Sunday night. Even though it was close to closing, we did not feel rushed during our entire meal. We got spicy tuna, spicy yellow tail, and no. 9 roll and all were made well. I had been wanting to try sushi at this place ever since Kara D. wrote a review. I wanted yummy, melt in your mouth the way that you want with the correct texture of sashimi taste as well as some whacky and yet delicious fish-forward "specialty sushi roll" to warm my belly on a weirdly cold-rainy-sleeting-typical-MN-in March sort of day. A combination of poor ordering on my part and excellent, high quality and many variety of sashimi on the restaurant's part made me a happy happy girl (in Anne Burrell's words). And eager to go back and order better! I had the Benitoro (fatty salmon), which was just...oh my goooooosh...delicious. The slice contained the full thickness belly of fresh salmon from skin to meaty part and the skin was slightly torched/charred. And it was deliciously smokey, fatty, salmon melting sashimi on my palate. I will go back for the sashimi and sushi benitoro salmon again soon. I also had the Tobiko nigiri, and the North Oaks Specialty Maki Roll. These are the two that I regret ordering. Suishin really shines in its variety and quality of fresh nigiri and sashimi choices, and anything "deep fried" takes that away. Also, the jalapeño was raw and in large chunks. I ended up picking it out, because it either was just texture and did not really add much, or so spicy, that all I tasted was spice. In the future, i'll get a naruto maki, or sashimi dinner. The tobiko nigiri was tobiko nigiri. I love the texture of it, and it was good but nothing extraordinary. Service was attentive, the tea was good, and the atmosphere was clean and quaint. I will be back and order more sashimi than my tummy knows what to do with it all! read more

Oh god, another strip-mall suburban sushi place on Groupon - my brain. Holy sh*t it's actually really good - my mouth. I came here right after work, so I immediately sat at the bar and demanded alcohol be poured on my face. Orrrr I chatted it up with the cool bartender as I happily sipped a Japanese-inspired margarita. When my boyfriend arrived, our bartender offered to serve us at a table as well. We had a lot of questions since it was our first time here. Starting with, "How do you pronounce the restaurant name?" (swee-shin). The bartender, now server, was very knowledgeable on the menu items and gave us suggestions based on our expressed preferences. We got a few basic rolls, but the star of the night was their Suishin roll (Asparagus, Spicy Tuna crunch inside, salmon outside, w. special sauce). It had all of the elements of a well composed roll - fresh, crunchy, savory, spicy, sweet. We ate it cross-eyed. Another dish I'd recommend is the Seafood Platter. It came with miso soup and steamed & seasoned broccoli. It ended up filling us up so much that we brought home leftovers, which is something that does not happen to us often. Suishin offers great value compared to other places in the TC, but I will say I am glad I had the Groupon. And the drink menu is a little cryptic - I had to ask what was in each specialty cocktail. But other than that, we loved the place. My boyfriend took pictures of the inside decor because he fantasizes about having the same lovely back-lit decorative paper walls in the dream house we will never have. read more
