More importantly, the guy who takes orders understands that vegan means no egg and no fish sauce (common in Thai dishes), so that makes it a no brainer. You want to try the grilled eggplant. 4 1/2 star! I was craving Thai and boy did this place hit the spot!! Clean and cozy, we were greeted as soon as we walked in and were seated. We ordered green curry with chicken, eggplant with chicken and the vegetable soup. Everything was wonderful! The soup in particular tasted so fresh, it was a simple broth with veggies.. reminded me of my Aunts cooking! We also ordered the mango sticky rice, although I enjoyed it, it definitely was too sweet for me. Besides that, we enjoyed the ambiance, it had an authentic Thai feel. Prices were decent, $10-15p/p, not bad for a nice filling dinner on an early Saturday evening! Side note: I did not notice they had a beer and wine menu, too. We've gotten wonderful food from Sukho Thai twice in the last two months. We had been going to Daughter Thai, which is also good, but I honestly think we prefer Sukho over them - both for quality and pricing. I love this restaurant. I work in the area and eat here all the time. Their lunch menu is very reasonable ($9 for curry with rice and $10 for noodle dishes). I also love that they truly understand what "vegan" means so I am happy that I can just say that I want my food vegan without having to guess at what kind of hidden animal product is in each dish. They will also substitute yellow curry into dishes that use red curry to make them vegan. My favorite dishes are basil tofu with eggplant, udon kee mao with tofu, and fresh rolls. I would say that one downside is that the happy hour portions seem smaller than the regular appetizer size (and lunch portions might be slightly smaller too). I still think the lunch menu is a good deal but not so sure about the happy hour deals. read more

Sukho Thai is definitely a hidden gem in the Rockridge area, stuck on a corner with an unassuming exterior, but serving up extremely flavorful and surprisingly light Thai food. For the first time, I wasn't downing cups of water after a Thai meal because they took the time to really develop the flavors with the ingredients themselves rather than with sodium and MSG. We started with the roti, which came with a curry dipping sauce. The roti itself was both flaky and chewy, the perfect texture that I look for in roti. Next, we shared the pineapple fried rice and the pumpkin curry. The pineapple fried rice came in a giant portion and generously stir-fried with both chicken and shrimp. The pumpkin curry didn't have too much coconut milk, and the level of saltiness was just enough to pair with rice. Once again, both of the main dishes didn't leave me needing water all night. I'm sad that I didn't discover this spot until I graduated from Berkeley because Sukho Thai is definitely one of the best places for Thai in the area! read more

What a delightful little restaurant in Rockridge! The staff was very friendly, and the decor is beautiful. I was really vibing with the elaborate trinkets and whole theme of the place. This is your typical Thai restaurant, and I guess my only opinion of it is that it's pretty fitting for the neighborhood it's in. It's a little more bougie. The portions are served on white ceramic plates. And you'll find wonton and udon on the menu alongside tom yum, just in case you want to take a jaunt across pan-Asian cuisines. A friend and I met here and I was excited to try my two favorite go-to dishes that can tell me whether or not a Thai restaurant is worth going to. I want to give this place 3 1/2 stars but damn you YELP and your black and whiteness. Thom Ka- BLAND. I'm spoiled rotten by Racha cafe. There was very little flavor and almost no lemongrass (which is weird because I don't like lemongrass but realized it's what makes Thom Ka so refreshing), no cilantro, and it was warm not hot. Pad Thai- the flavors were ok but the noodles were cooked too long. They included peanuts (which Champa Garden forgets) but all in all I wasn't impressed. Pumpkin Curry- teas our best selection. Pumpkin was cooked and the flavors were good- but I still wanted it more spicy. I've been to Thailand so maybe my pallet is tainted but this place is only so-so. Racha Cafe is way better but their chef changed recently so I'm not sure what I'll do at this point! :/ read more

Met up with a friend I hadn't seen in two years, and to change things up we walked up and down College like in Before Times. Saw the menu outside and it looked just right. We walked in and the hostess asked us if we wanted to sit away from the crowd, closer to the window (she later explained that there was a large rowdy party and didn't want us disturbed. So of course we were immediately amazed by her thoughtfulness! And then it got better. I got the pork pumpkin curry, my friend got an asparagus dish and both were seasoned beautifully (have been to some Thai spots where it tastes like everything was topped with the same sauce). The food came out quickly, and were in generous portions as well. We lingered to talk, and never felt pressured to pay and leave, and even had a lovely conversation with the hostess/waitress as we were finishing. First time customer, will NOT be back, thanks to the horrendous customer service. We arrived at 8:30pm to a barely populated restaurant. The food was passable (nothing to rave about). Unfortunately, the restaurant only has one restroom stall. I decide to use it at 9pm, only to wait until 9:20pm, with 3 other customers waiting behind me. We would occasionally knock, as we were concerned that someone had a medical emergency. Nope. 20 minutes later, a waitress emerges with a bag of trash. She literally spent 20 minutes removing a trash bag from a metal container. No part of the restroom was actually clean (dirty toilet, trash on floor still). The part that pissed me off most was, that ALL of the workers knew that their staff was in the bathroom, yet no one took the time to inform any of the actual customers waiting of the fact. The 3 already paid customers waiting in line behind me actually left to use a nearby bar's restroom! ALL they had to do was: 1. tell us to go back to our tables instead of waiting and worrying that we need to call 911; 2. Put a sign on the damn bathroom door; 3. Tell their staff to not pretend to clean it 1.5 hrs before closing time for 20 minutes as a line of customers wait! When I informed my waitress that I am quite unhappy about their complete lack of basic consideration for their customers' comfort, I just got a blank look. I definitely over-tipped. Now I understand how an earlier reviewer found a dirty paper towel in her chicken dish. It came from their bathroom 'cleaning' efforts! The food is great. The service is abysmal. All but ONE server is terrible. Paxi (think I spelled it wrong) is awesome. She knows us. She know what we want and gets it done. Like I said, the food is delicious. But the service?!?? I ask for udon noodle soup with soft tofu and only carrot. What do we get EVERYTIME? Unless Paxi is there we get udon noodle soup, bean sprouts a ton of scallions and spinach.. ok.. We ask for the happy hour of chicken satay.. everytime, unless we get Paxi we will get 4 chicken satay rather than two.. And on and on.. so annoying. How can they not get at least ONE more great server?!?? I know times are hard, trust me, I know. But please- I hope the owner of Sukho Thai reads this.. sawadii Kaa Update: they seemed to have worked really hard to get things right and they have as far as our udon order and just our order in general. This restaurant was by far the best Thai food I've ever had. We ordered so much food that I can't recommend any item in particular. The only advise I would share is go dine with a few friends and order several items. I had a spicy chicken dish and I have to confess, it was SPICYYYYY. Pad choi chicken I believe. I was impressed with the fact it was spicy but didn't kill my taste buds. One thing I will add to this place, when you sit, be ready to order in a quickly fashion. The waiters here dont mess around. Their busy and man do they keep that pace. Excellent customer service, just crack a joke with the waiter to get her to slow down a bit. The ONLY downside I had with this restaurant is they need to close down for ONE day and give the place a good scrub down. To much dust on the ceiling fans above your dinning table. Lastly. I cannot say much about the taste of food here because the taste was spoiled by first, getting me the wrong dish (that I didn't order). She brought me an eggplant dish - and I specifically said, I am allergic to eggplant. Second, when my dish re-arrived it was served to my friend to eat, and not me with no apologies what so ever. I think my allergies to the eggplant pissed the server. The attitude was as if I was there to eat for free. Awesome Thai place in downtown Rockridge. They do not deliver, but they are quick and delicious for pickup and dine in orders. We ordered the Pork Fried Rice, and Chicken Panang Curry, fresh rolls, and prawn Pra Ram. I'm a sucker for Panang and have found that many Thai places in the area do not have it. Sukho Thai's Panang curry is the perfect amount of spice and veggies with free range organic chicken. The pork fried rice was the best I've ever had. The Pra Ram was perfectly cooked broccoli and spinach with just the right amount of sauce. Fresh rolls were great as well. Wish this place delivered, but still awesome and delicious in every way. This is by far the worst Thai food I have ever tried! OMG really gross we found a long hair on a side of our salad. When we pointed out the hair the server immediately took it away! No apologizes? really? That is all I am gonna say about that. GROSS! The place is really dirty. Just look at the chairs, menus, utensils, glass of water etc. Filthy. Ok now here is the even more shady part of this place: on the menu they have a section dedicated to Organic dishes. They are priced higher which is understandable. But they are identical to non-organic dishes. For example yellow curry (organic and non-organic). So does anyone really think they keep an inventory of organic carrots and non-organic ones? and what if they accidentally mixed them up? To me this is a simple way for them to make money since there is no way anyone can tell the difference between organic and non-organic curry by just eating it. Skip this place. read more
