When I first came to Texas, I fully expected it to be wall to wall old timey BBQ joints, maybe a gas station with an old guy smoking meat out back on a 100 year old smoker. Turns out that is mostly not the case. Yes, DFW has some stellar barbecue, but a lot of it lives in shiny purpose-built buildings with executive chefs and serious BBQ or fine-dining pedigrees. Well friends, this is one of those rare places I have only found a few of - A true little hidden gem. I can see why the reviews are mixed. Buffet sides can be polarizing, the building is nothing to look at inside or out, and there is no Diet Dr Pepper, which frankly feels like a sad and bold choice. But let us get to the important part. I ordered the slider plate and it was outstanding. You get two sides, which means you can try 3 different meats, one on each sandwich. I went with brisket, pork, and sausage. I chose coleslaw as one side so I could pile it onto the sandwiches, and onion rings as the other. The onion rings are not from the buffet - and are kinda a hidden choice - but seek them out - made to order, hot and crispy and worth it. This was a lot of food. The rolls deserve their own shoutout. I am fairly certain they are handmade (or gotten from a bakery daily) , and gloriously fluffy. My lunch was spectacular. Hubby went with the ribs and brisket plate with loaded potatoes, which were yum, and BBQ beans, which were just okay. To finish things off, they offer free vanilla soft serve ice cream. Do not "save room" for it, it is not amazing, but it is a nice little palate cleanser and a sweet way to end the meal. If you are looking for fancy vibes, this is not your spot... If you are looking for honest, satisfying barbecue that reminds you why Texas BBQ has a reputation in the first place, this one is absolutely worth a stop. read more

For a restaurant with a sizable interior seating, the parking was atrocious. The paved parking on its side had sufficient space for four vehicles. May be five if all the vehicles were parked inches apart. Many vehicles parked behind the restaurant on gravel and grass. I chose the BBQ Pork Ribs Plate which came with four ribs. Once I got my meat, everything else was self-service. For sides, I chose the smoked beans and potato salad. Before leaving the area, I made sure to grab a dinner roll. The Point of Sale requesting a tip annoyed me due to the amount of self-service. The ribs were okay. There was not as much meat as I would have liked. Of the two sides, the smoked beans were my favorite. Its sauce provided plenty of flavor. The potato salad had a distinct dill aftertaste. The interior of the dinner roll was slightly warm, so it may have sat on the serving tray for a while. As with other barbecue spots, they offered free soft serve (vanilla). Frugal diners should forego the non-complimentary desserts. Unfortunately, the ice cream was softer than my preference. It's consistency similar to a very thick milkshake. read more

We tried brisket, sausage and turkey (no dark meat chicken available). The turkey was so poor I couldn't finish it. Selection of sides was fair with the loaded mashed potatoes being worth choosing. After years of passing by old house BBQ, we finally decided to give it a try. The staff really stood out, every serve server, busser, and even the cooks were genuinely friendly, attentive and helpful. We went with the Sunday special: three pork meats (pulled pork, ham, ribs) two sides and a roll for $16.99. We split it between two people, and it was more than enough. The pulled pork and ham were the best, especially with the tangy, vinegar based barbecue sauce from the buffet line. (Better than what was at the condiment station. The ribs were just OK, nothing special, but still tasty. As for the sides, the cheesy potatoes are satisfying, and the Mac salad was fresh. Unfortunately, the soda fountain was down during our visit, but it didn't ruin the experience. This place is old school bbq and I love it for that. It's a throw-back to a simpler time, with quality food you select on a serving line. Sercice was efficient and cordial. The food was all fresh even though it was later in the afternoon when I was there. All the sides looked great and there was a lot to choose from. I asked for fat wet brisket with some bark and that's what I got. Tender and flavorful. There is a nice condiment bar with several (3?) kinds of bbq sauce. One is spicy and it was my favorite. We had a large order for lunch - the restaurant got it to us pretty quick which we appreciated but the quality wasn't top notch for sure. The brisket was chalky tasting and they literally left the bones of the ribs in the sandwiches for you to chomp on. The pulled pork was generally alright but cold by the time we got it back to our place (we were 5 min away but given the large order, they likely made this one first and let it sit). The service was generally friendly but not very personable, they brought us out food and we paid, but they weren't able to confirm any of the orders that we gave them over the phone, out loud. The guy just handed us the bags and checked us out. When we got back and finally looked at the receipt (our bad, should've checked at the restaurant), they charged us for an extra plate. $15!! I got the Que Crew together earlier this month to check out another area BBQ spot. This time at Old House BBQ in Lewisville. The outer appearance is that of an old country restaurant where locals gather for "supper" or pick up dinner after a long day of work - and that's actually probably pretty close to accurate. The interior is clean, and larger than it appears on the outside. The popcorn ceiling and décor takes you back to the mid-70s and the food is served cafeteria-style. The meats can be ordered By the Pound, as a Sandwich, or as part of a 1, 2 or 3-Meat Dinner Plate. They also offer BBQ Baked Potatoes, Nachos, Quesadillas and Frito Pie. Being my first visit, I was compelled to go with the 3-Meat Plate, so I could sample as many items as possible. I selected Brisket, Jalapeno Sausage and Ribs. A great many sides are laid out across the warmer tables and coolers. Many looked good, but when I see the words "Cheesy Potatoes", it's settled! For my other side, I went traditional with the Smoked Beans. After paying for my dinner, and setting my tray down, I retrieved my self-serve soda and gathered fresh toppings, such as onions, jalapenos and pickles. As the meat goes, the Brisket was a bit dry. If you like lean Brisket and sauce, this is probably for you. I just prefer a little marbelization and bark on my Brisket. The Sausage was standard. Not bad, but nothing special. The ribs were, by far, my favorite of the meats I tried. Very tender, came off the bone clean and there was a smokiness that was really tasty. The Cheesy Potatoes didn't live up to expectation. Good, but I had hoped for more. The flavor of the cheese was too similar to Velveeta for my liking and the Smoked Beans were quite good. I don't want to come off as overly critical. I would return, as there is a lot of good things about this food. The competition in this area for BBQ is so strong, that I have to give things a critical eye for the really special places to stand out. I would definitely get the Ribs and the Smoked Beans and I'm anxious to try some of the others on my next visit. read more

The first time I tried this place it seemed okay nothing special. I tried to like this place so we gave I another shot but again it was very lack luster. The quality is mediocre at best. The smoked beans tasted bland like they came from a can. The brisket had no real smoke or flavor and was very dry. The portions are a joke considering what you pay. They definitely want to charge you an arm and a leg but do not give you decent portions. If you don't have cash and pay by card they will charge you for that so they do not have to pay that service fee which is ridiculous. If they do not want to pay the fees simply only accept cash. Problem solved! They nickel and dime you for everything. The roles and cobbler were the only somewhat decent things we had. We will not be returning! read more

Bland. Tried this place for lunch recently. The restaurant was kinda empty but nobody greeted me, not even as I walked up to the cashier to order. Mac and cheese was overcooked (noodles easily broke apart and mushy) and tasted worst than boxed mac and cheese. Loaded mashed potatoes was alright but had bacon and green onion, so those added a bit of flavor. The brisket didn't have any flavor or smoke ring and tasted boiled. The banana pudding was pretty much the box mix with one wafer, no fresh bananas or flavor or more wafers. Only good thing was the fried okra, which was actually crispy and flavorful. I used to come here almost every week. Its been about a year since ive eaten here. Went back yesterday and it was terrible. Got their 11.99 special, half barbeque chicken with 2 sides and no drink. The chicken was bland and soggy, skin was an absolute mess with no flavor. Sauce had no flavor and the chicken didnt even taste like imagination. Cheesy potatoes were cold and bland, tasted like it got scooped off the floor of albertsons deli, same for the cucumber salad. Vegetables were mush and soggy. Unfortunately paid 3.49 for a side of banana pudding which tasted like an artificial banana vomited in a bowl.
