    Blackened salmon
    Pam P.

After a long drive, it was the perfect, welcome time to chill, eat, and unwind -- and thanks to their thoughtful seating, we were able to watch the women's short skate at the Olympics right from our table, which made it even better. The crab fried rice was absolutely delicious and unlike anything I've had before -- packed with flavor and totally unique. And the blackened salmon... YUM. Perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned, and just all-around amazing.

Sullivan's Steakhouse took over the old Roast space downtown, and it feels like a classic, low key night out. Parking in this area is still a bit hectic, so it is worth coming a little early or planning on a short walk. The mood is relaxed and dimly lit, with a live stand up bassist and piano that really sets the tone. Service was genuinely kind across the board. We started with the cheesesteak egg rolls (3/5) and beef wellington bites (4/5). The egg rolls have a fun concept with chopped filet mignon inside a thin, layered wrapper, but the layers compress with the sauce and filling, turning into a dense, chewy shell that is harder to cut and bite through. The sauces also tend to overshadow the flavor of the meat. The wellington bites, on the other hand, were great! A bit more duxelles than filet, but very good flavor in a light puff pastry, with the only knock being that the sauce was a bit cool and cooled the bites down quickly. For mains, the Cajun ribeye (3.5/5) was a solid, standard ribeye with a nice sear and a proper medium cook. The Cajun butter was milder than expected, so the steak ate more like a regular ribeye with a light seasoning rather than a true Cajun profile. The crab stuffed shrimp (2.5/5) had good, well seasoned crab cake filling but overcooked, dry shrimp, which made for an odd contrast. I added it as a side to the steak and was glad it was not my main. The herb brick chicken (3.5/5) had good flavor on the skin and was cooked correctly, but as a full dish it did not fully come together. Fine, but not especially memorable. The sides were in the same range. The fresh asparagus (2.5/5) was straightforward but slightly overcooked and limp. The brussels sprouts (3/5) were shredded with bits of core, plus bacon and onion. The flavors were nice, but shredding them kept them from picking up the char and caramelization you expect from roasted sprouts. I would have preferred more whole leaves and halved pieces. I loved Roast in this space, so my bar may be a bit higher, but right now Sullivan's feels like a comfortable option if you are already downtown rather than a must visit destination steakhouse.

This review gets 1/5 stars merely for the table side tossed BLT salad, which we enjoyed. Otherwise the service started shaking with the hostess, Susan, somewhat recouped with our server, Diego, but then fell to the bottom ranks with the manager, Chris, after we told him about our less than stellar experience, which resulted in us opting out of ordering entrees. We deserved a top tier customer service and professional driven dining experience, just elsewhere. When our party of four arrived, the restaurant was basically empty with minimal tables full. We were led past the entire front dining hall to the back dining hall in a dimly lit, basically dark booth (which would have been hard to read the menu and we were close to the kitchen, and across from a fireplace that was not lit). I asked to be seated elsewhere due to dark lighting and Susan moved us to a booth in the front dining hall that was well lit, and we were happy. To our surprise, the hostess was wearing some casual brown winter boots with her all black attire, which did not fit the dress code or aesthetics of what we would expect at a "steakhouse." As well, some of the employees, many, were wearing Lions jerseys, and again, I am all for Lion Pride, but we thought this was going to be an elevated dining experience. As well, there is a dress code policy framed at the hostess stand. We were dressy and festive for the holiday, as we were celebrating our annual Christmas gathering. Time came to order and all seemed well with Diego as he greeted us with enthusiasm. Somehow he made the mistake of bringing one guest a nonalcoholic beverage, and when she shared with him the drink tasted like pop, he somehow thought she requested a virgin mojito (she never mentioned nonalcoholic). No problem, she requested a margarita, which unfortunately was missing ingredients and looked clear as a cloudless sky. Another guest from our party took the drink to the bartender this time and the bartender agreed the margarita looked none the such, and she requested they make our friend a Lavendar Limoncello, which I was drinking (and was a great cocktail, something we knew was safe). When the drink arrives at the table, it is NOT the Lavender Limoncello, but another margarita ---BUMMER, and yet another less than favorable touch point of the dining experience. Time to order entrees: we had already ordered and eaten a couple apps and bread and we were hungry for more. In the middle of us ordering and asking Diego questions, he decides to cut me off mid sentence and tells us he's going to give us more time---he walks away! It was in this moment after several bad encounters with this place, we decided that our service would be best suited elsewhere, a restaurant that actually wanted to pride themselves on service recovery and a polished dining experience. We flagged down a man who appeared to be the manager, Chris, and it was solidified after speaking with him that we made the correct decision to leave and never return again. When she told him that our experience was "less than favorable" and we would like the bill, Chris never asked any questions, shared an apology or opted for any service recovery. As well, by this time, the dining area was full of Lions fans since the game was ending--everyone in casual jerseys, hats, caps, etc...things listed as faux pas on the dress code policy. I pride myself on accurate reviews, and this one was longer than usual because I needed to fully describe our horrible encounter. Sad.

I took my boyfriend for his birthday and 5 months later we still bring up our waiter in conversation. Walter if I could put you in my pocket and take you to all the restaurants with us I would! Your professionalism, extensive knowledge & kind soul just made our night and his birthday so special. The food was outstanding, dim intimate lighting & a very close parking garage for being downtown. 10/10 recommend for a special occasion

We visited here on a whim and what a great choice we made. The food was excellent! The lobster tail was large and succulent. The steak cooked perfectly. The crab fried rice is to die for! The asparagus was delicious and crispy enough but not too crunchy. The drinks were not only pleasing to the eye, but pleasing to the palate. Kay went above and beyond with the service. This place is exceptional and we will be returning whenever we return to the area.

Lobster GARLIC MASHED POTATOES WITH LOBSTER Was dry and tasted horrible!!
    De Saltino D.

Appetizer was lobster bisque soup, which tasted like it came out of a can of tomato sauce with fake lobster flakes sprinkled on top. Service was horrible took forever to get our drinks. We got our Appetizer before our drinks, crazy. Next after getting our drinks I had lamb chops which were so small I couldn't believe it. Added a side of lobster fried rice which looked good in presentation but tasted horrible. Next I ordered blackened salmon which was decent with a side of lobster mashed potatoes which was really thick and dry with no flavor. Ambiance was nice we were across from wine cellar in a booth with privacy curtains to make the experience more intimate with my spouse, but the food and service was horrible. I would stay away from this place, not worth the price!!!! I wish I could give zero stars

This is a good steakhouse if you need a place for a business lunch or simple date night. My server was wonderful, but some of the other wait staff could be a bit unprofessional with their language and topics of conversation, which was not ideal. The food itself is good, my steak had a bit too much fat on it for my liking, but it was cooked really well.

Awesome steakhouse that has excellent lunch options - I got the ahi tuna sandwich and you can swap out the fries for sautéed spinach or Brussels sprouts. Moreover the soup (lobster and shrimp bisque) was fantastic, especially with crackers. Their iced tea is also excellent, and their dessert - I got the key lime pie, a selection from a wide menu of items - was also amazing. Service also exceptional, the server was very attentive and constantly checking in. Finally, the atmosphere is super stylish, ritzy and cool, boasting a very cool bar. Highly recommended!

We checked out Sullivan's for their Happy Hour! They have some great options on the menu. I ordered the tuna and my friend ordered the sliders. They have a nice select of wine, beer and cocktails on the menu. I thought the prices were great for Happy Hour. I will most certainly be back to try one of their famous steaks!

Nate and I stopped in on our most recent visit to Detroit and had a lovely experience. The space is tucked away but had a surprising amount of outdoor space--we were there in January but I'd love to come back in the summer. We were greeted right away and given a spot near the bar. The menu includes cocktails, lots of wine, and several tasty food options. It was quite busy inside, so it took a bit of time for our server to come over to us, but we weren't in a rush. They had ten cocktails on their list and I tried the bullet proof soul and Nate got the negroni alla perra. The ingredients list for some of the cocktails include things I've never heard of, but at a place like this, I just know it's going to be good. Our drinks were perfectly balanced and very tasty. We also ordered the mortadella sandwich to split--this was delicious. It was pretty messy, but worth it. It was perfectly toasted and full of mortadella. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and I would love to try more of the food options. Can't wait to visit again!

Downtown Detroit definitely feels different now, and the crowd has shifted a bit, but none of that took away from what The Standby is. That alleyway magic is still there. Walking in honestly felt like a little blast from the past, and it made me really happy. It ended up being a highlight of my trip home. The food was phenomenal. The crab was so buttery, the waffle situation was amazing, and the overall execution across the menu was impressive. We ordered a lot, basically half the menu and everything hit. * Short rib plate: delicious, rich, and comforting * Chicken schnitzel with curry mustard: WOW. Juicy, crunchy, fresh, perfectly seasoned. The curry mustard was everything, and that little pepper on top? 10/10. This was hands down my favorite dish. * Drinks: They had brand ambassadors for Wild Turkey, giving out free Old Fashioneds, which was honestly the perfect touch. We also had a small ounce pour of a mezcal that was beautifully smoked, super aromatic and smoky in the best way. Service was great too, we had two different servers, and both were attentive and kind. The only miss for me personally was the pastrami salmon toast. I wanted to love it so badly because I love salmon and I love smoked fish, but it just wasn't for me. I actually sent it back (which I felt bad about). I think the slight sweetness, (possibly from the tomato jam)threw it off for my palate. I was craving something fully savory with a bit of acidity. I think a thicker, crunchier toast and a more umami-forward, citrusy or pickled element might have taken it where it needed to go. That said, I know pastrami-style salmon is a thing right now, it just didn't work for me. Everything else? Truly amazing. The Standby will forever be a place I come back to when I'm home. I'm excited to return, see what's new on the menu, and relive that magic again. Highly recommend. 10 out of 10. Will absolutely be back.

Between the two of us we had the beet salad, burger and steak tartare. Burger was good, but not the best smash burger that I've had. Beet salad was fine, however the cream cheese was a bit overpowering against the orange oil. It was dying for some citrus. Steak tartare was a bit dry, meaning that a small dab of olive oil would have added to the richness and overall mouth feel. I did not really taste the egg although I did see a dab of yolk on the tartare. Needed a bit of salt also to enhance the taste Menu was small, but it did cover a cross section of French bistro dishes. All in all, I thought it was a bit overpriced. So I will have to consider returning for a full meal. I would come back for a burger and beer at the bar.
