I'm a huge fan of sushi! Can't ever get enough of it. That's why I've made it a point to try almost every sushi restaurant in the Reno/Sparks/Carson City area so I can make an informed decision as to what I like or dislike. I really liked this place! I happened to be in Carson City recently to play an early afternoon music gig with my multiple award winning group (www.RickMetz.com) and figured this would be a great opportunity after my gig to check out the newest addition to the area sushi scene. I'm sure glad I did. Located in the heart of Carson City, strangely enough, right next door to another fairly new sushi restaurant that I've also tried...and enjoyed...this place stands head and shoulders above anything I've tried in that town. Comfortably appointed and set up nicely with plenty of table seating and a spacious sushi bar, I opted to sit at the bar, as I always do. I enjoy the interaction with the sushi chef that's crafting my food. I also like to sit at the bar so I didn't have to fill out one of those "order sheets" and hand it in. That way, I can get my orders done one at a time so I can enjoy it as fresh as possible and not get it all at one time so it doesn't sit in front of me and get "old" and I can enjoy the progression of what I order. I was immediately welcomed by a couple of friendly staff members and promptly seated. My drink order was taken and delivered while I perused their abundant menu. My waitress informed me that I ordered appetizers from her and when I was ready, the sushi chefs would take my following orders. The sushi chef that was the closest to me welcomed me and let me know to get his attention when I was ready to start ordering from him. My appetizers: (All arrived on one plate) Don Tons, Mussels, Supreme Scallops & Jalapeno Poppers All delicious. The Don Tons were creamy and crispy, the Mussels were fresh and juicy, the Supreme Scallops were one of the highlights...outstanding...and the Jalapeno Poppers had the right amount of spiciness. What set them apart from others I've had was the nice slice of fresh avocado on top...great touch! Everyone does sushi differently...I have my progression that I go though, as does everyone else...and we all have our likes and dislikes. My biggest dislike is the "fake krab", which is just pressed whitefish, so I never order anything with that on it. All details as to the ingredients for any roll/specialty nigiri are listed on their menu, which I took pictures of and are included in my photos. Time for some rolls: Luke Skywalker Cap N' Crunch Spider Roll A Spider Roll is one of my "benchmark" rolls for any sushi joint I go to. If they can make a great one, then I'm usually assured that everything else will be great, too! All 3 of these rolls were exemplary! Great melding of flavors and textures. The Spider Roll passed my test...LOL... Time for their "Specialty Nigiri": The Fella Heart Breaker Both delicious and unique. Time for basic Nigiri: Maguro, Hamachi, Escolar, Albacore, Salmon, Smoked Salmon, Unagi The ratio of rice to fish was great! The slices of fish were large and matched perfectly with the amount of rice below them. Very pleased to see Escolar on the menu, as it's not available everywhere. I asked for my Salmon Nigiri the way I like it, hold the Lemon slice and add a slice of Jalapeno, which the sushi chef did for me. He asked why I liked it this way and I explained that I think the jalapeno offsets the inherent fattiness of the salmon better than the citrus and I like the way it tastes. All the Nigiri was fresh and flavorful. Followed that with their take on a Quail Egg Shooter. I enjoyed that, as well. I always follow my sushi with a bowl of Miso soup. My maternal grandmother was from England and always followed any meal she ate with a cup of hot tea "to aid digestion". I consider Miso the sushi equivalent of that practice and do that every time. The Miso was done beautifully...not a "salt bomb" as you find in a lot of other places. Followed that with some amazing Pistachio Ice Cream for dessert! You almost never find this flavor in a restaurant...what a pleasant surprise...and it was exceptional. At $30.95 for lunch, it was on par with most other places around the area and well worth the price for the delicious offerings and the exceptional (and friendly) service by the chefs and wait staff. All in all, a very nice lunch, which I will repeat whenever I'm in Carson City and have the opportunity to visit. Give them a try to see what you think... read more

Wife and I came to this place when it opens its door around 11 am and we decided to sit by the bar. We started with a few nigiri's and a few specialty nigiri. What I like about the place is that it doesn't drown the sushi rolls or hand rolls with sauces. I tried their rainbow hand roll. I watched the sushi master rolled the sushi in front of me. He spreads small amount of rice on sushi paper and slices big chunks of hamachi, Sake, maguro along with cucumbers and carrots. It was so good, I ordered another one. My wife and I like the salmon skin rolls. Again less rice and a big chunk of crunchy salmon skin and a little bit of sauce on it. Thumbs up! read more

We came to eat here tonight as I missed the last Yelp event due to an injury and I really wanted to try this place. We were served by Sarah, and had a great meal, choosing to do the all you can eat option. The place was packed but the servers were quick to bring everything we needed and the food came out fast! We sat at a low top in the corner of the restaurant near the sushi bar and enjoyed a quiet, delicious meal together. As soon as we walked in the door we were rushed to pick a seat and order dunks and appetizers. We got stuck at the end of the counter where the swinging door repeatedly hit my chair. I loved as far as I could. Having to yell at the sushi chef proved problematic as he got our order wrong. When I requested a special roll per their menu, he misunderstood and started making the wrong thing. I was able to catch his attention and get it corrected. The topper was being told we weren't in the system so they had no idea what we ordered. We owned up to everything we ate. We will look elsewhere for sushi. read more

Not expecting to enjoy an AYCE so much away from home! The sushi here is great quality and for an amazing price. I've never been to a sushi restaurant where they allow fully customizable rolls at an AYCE. But the biggest plus is the service. They are so attentive and accommodating! I have patronized enough sushi restaurants to know when it is done right. Sumi Sushi managed to screw it up in many ways. The ginger had a stale taste and wasabi had a brownish tint. Rice was soggy and the food was tastless. Sauce tasted more like catsup than eel sauce. When I complained, the bill was adjusted upward. Servers were busy but that was no excuse for the hostess to hand us menus at the door and point us to a table in the back. Probably from lack of experience and training rather than intentional neglect. The server was abrupt, rather than exhibiting polite Japanese-type professionalism. Restaurant seating was cramped. There was a strong fishy smell. I know. Duh, they served fish. But it should not stink. I will not be visiting Sumi Sushi again - ever. read more

As an update we returned here on a Saturday evening. The entire bar was full and every table was also full. Our server did an excellent job and communicated well with us and the tables around us. The sushi chefs were still on point and were working hard to make sure everyone got their sushi in a timely manner. There was also a male server that took over when the girl left that did an excellent job. He made sure our drinks were refilled immediately and that we had sushi sheets when we needed them. He also did a great job at educating a table near us that wasn't familiar with AYCE sushi. Great experience. We will definitely continue to visit this restaurant. read more

Story time - It was a very snowy day and I called to do a to-go order. For some reason they "couldn't hear" me on the phone. So I hung up and tried to call back but I was sent directly to their 'inbox is full' voice message. I tried calling a couple more times. I ended up just going into the restaurant to order my to-go order and just stood there. I mentioned their phone wasn't working but the server ignored my statement. The server said they weren't having a very busy day due to the snow. I decided to see if the phone would try to ring if I was in the store calling. Guess what - nope, directly to their full voicemail message. One of them definitely turned their phone off starting off the day at 11am when they weren't even busy. Nice. Whenever I'm trying out a new sushi spot, I like to measure the rolls on three aspects: texture, freshness of the fish, and overall flavor. As we discovered on a recent jaunt to Carson City, Sumi Sushi nails all of these points and offers awesome service to boot. We found our new favorite spot in the capital city! The setup of Sumi is quaint but makes very good use of the space. Pro tip - sit at the bar so you can chat with the chefs and get their well-informed opinion on what to order! We ended up trying the Adam Roll, the Laub Special, Luke Skywalker, and Zephyr Cove. All of these were great! Balanced in both flavor and texture, it is clear that these rolls were thoughtfully crafted with the diner's experience in mind. My favorite was the Laub Special because the flavor of torched unagi is just perfection! The mussels were solid, quail egg shooter a total umami bomb, the Hamachi was like butter, and we also really enjoyed the Rooster Salmon and the Bend Over Backwards Shrimp - yum! One of my favorite appetizers was their take on jalapeno poppers - jalapeno halves stuffed with cream cheese and crab mix. So addicting! My husband and I met up with a friend in Carson City and decided to grab a bite - I was literally blown away by the quality of fish at this sushi restaurant, definitely wasn't expecting this! I haven't tasted salmon that buttery and toro that fresh in a long time. The rolls were so amazing in both taste and presentation - my fave was the King Kong roll. Just look at the photos! All u can eat is $38, so worth it for the freshness of the fish! Definitely bringing friends over! It's a bit of a drive from Reno maybe 30 min or so but worth it! Their sushi chefs have 40 years of combined experience making sushi, and u can really tell from the food! They r still working on their extended liquor license but I'm definitely coming back when their full bar gets built in! (U can still get beer and sake etc right now. Special. That was the word that popped into my head when I took my first bite of the sushi. We got the lunch special which included two sushi rolls, a bowl of miso soup, and some sesame cucumbers. The miso soup was excellent, as good as I've ever had and the cucumbers had some snap and flavor. As for the sushi rolls, we got a Laub Special and the Pink Lady, both of whom had a bit of heat. I can't emphasize enough how great the flavor was and how incredibly fresh the fish tasted. To top it off they were really long, longer than any sushi roll I've ever had. Those two rolls were more than enough for the two of us. If someone came to visit us in Reno and asked to go to the best sushi place in the area, we'd hop in the car and take them here. Our go to place for fresh and delicious sushi. Oh, and did I mention how nice the ambiance is and how great the service was. All in all a fantastic experience. read more

I had gone to a yelp event at Sumi Sushi, and was excited to return for lunch. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. It was busy for a Friday afternoon around 1:30, but the staff seated us right away and got drinks ordered quickly. We decided not to have the all you can eat buffet and ordered a couple of sushi rolls instead. The waitress was sweet, and told us that we could get the lunch combo and get a soup and a cucumber salad to go with our rolls. It made it less expensive and we got to try the salad and soup, which I have to say was quite tasty. The sushi rolls are large! We thought we might order more, but after the two rolls we couldn't even think about another one. It's cozy in there, with the center sushi chef station in the middle so you can watch them make all of their beautiful creations. Love this place! read more

Best nigiri in the Reno/Carson area! The owner said that he gets some of the freshest fish on account of his relationships, and he is not wrong. The fish was super fresh, sliced nice and thick, and beautifully presented. I could have had just nigiri here and been a very happy lady. The rolls we ordered were quite good too, although I've come to prefer smaller pieces (bites) in my sushi rolls, because otherwise I get too full to fast. But no flavor or quality was compromised in the very generously sized rolls, just the amount that I could consume was different than I'm used too. My kids were with me and they were super accommodating of them, making sure their food came out first, cups with lids, removing messy plates as needed. We all really enjoyed our experience here and will certainly be back soon! read more

We go to Carson a lot and have been searching for a go to sushi spot. We saw this place had new ownership so decided to give it a try. I think 40 for AYCE sushi is actually a good value, especially since virtually the whole menu is available, even appetizers and desserts. We don't really have this at home so we gave it a shot. We are really nigiri lovers, not so much into rolls so we started there. We were happy to see the specialty Nigiri and tried a few of those. Unfortunately we kind of misunderstood the chef (he said one or two, we thought he meant pieces, he meant orders) so we wound up with a huge pile right out of the gate. The nigiri were good, the fish seems to be high quality. I like to try Mackerel at sushi places because it is very telling as to the quality. Three out of four were very good, but the last one i don't think they should have served. We really liked the special nigiri, especially the Fella. Never thought I'd eat a piece of sushi with bacon bits! Next we moved on to some hand rolls. I had the spicy scallop and my husband the salmon skin. Unfortunately these were not great. Way too big to eat, and the salmon skin was not edible. Very thick and hard. My scallops tasted a little old. Sauce was good though. We also tried the double down roll, which we didn't like at all. The fish in the middle was too big and cold. I would guess the rolls with more sauce or things on top were better. This one was too dry and the fish too thick. Our server was fantastic, very attentive and friendly. We loved the pistachio and coconut ice cream for dessert. We also loved the setup of the place, with the huge bar and space for the chefs to work. We think this place has great potential, but after reflection I think they need to slow down and prepare the sushi with more care. Our orders came out really fast, but the rice kind of fell apart and the pieces of fish are too thick, making them difficult to eat. There was way too much krab on the special Nigiri and the jalapeños on the Fella were huge. Hope to try again next time we are in town. read more
