This is the nicest modern Asian restaurant I have ever been to. We were there for lunch. The restaurant is massive but well-organized--the seating area for groups, singles, doubles, and tables overlooking the kitchen, the bar, and the private rooms. Even the restroom is clean and has modern art on the walls. Hunan food has a nicer flavor than other Chinese food, with a Modern touch presentation, making it excellent!! Three different rice options are smart ( black, brown, and white). There is also a tea option. I ordered peach white tea to pair with my spicy dish. I love the okra salad and river eel. Pricing is higher than other Chinese restaurants, but the experience makes up for it. If you go for the lunch special, the menu has a great price. We came here as walk-ins on a Saturday night and they were able to seat us immediately at the bar or communal table. We chose to sit at the bar, but the communal table looked well spaced out enough that it would have also been cute and enjoyable. Flavors and cooking style were tasty and authentic, but there was a big discrepancy in portion sizes between dishes. We got a decent size for our appetizers (mala duck and cold bean curd), but our vegetable dish of eggplant and string beans was much smaller than we are used to the dish being at Chinese food restaurants. Overall, the prices are on the higher end as well ($12-16 for appetizers and $20-40 for main dishes), but that's pretty inline with other nearby restaurants in Kendall Square. Our favorite dishes of the night were the mala duck and eggplant and string bean. Both were flavorful and delicious so would definitely get again. The cold shredded bean curd wasn't as flavorful as we would have liked. (Maybe our fault for requesting mild, but this dish could have used some soy sauce). Would skip. The lava fish and sweet tofu pudding were both tender and light and enjoyable, but not a must have again. Overall, the service was good and attentive, the decor was new and modern, and the food was yummy but a bit pricey. Hot & Sour Soup: Better than the average hot & sour soup at a standard Chinese restaurant. Melted Gold Soup: I liked the unique flavors in this soup. Shang Gan: This was my favorite appetizer. I got authentic spicy for this, and boy was it spicy. Really good stuff. The tofu nicely soaks up all of the juices and bursts with flavor. Potstickers: Really good. Nice sear on the bottoms. I am very skeptical about ordering duck, especially in a restaurant that I have never tried before. I heard so much about how great Sumiao was so I thought I'd give theirs a try. With much trepidation we ordered the House Crispy Duck and we were pleasantly surprised. Out came this large, moist, chunky sliced duck breast covered in lacquered crisp to cracking skin accompanied by steamed bao buns, slivered cucumbers and scallions and hoisin sauce. What a treat to make the perfect duck bun at the table. Cannot wait to return to have it again and dig deeper into their menu. The pork gyozas were also good. Upon arrival, the hosts were friendly and we were sat right away. We went at lunch and the vibe was lively. Most tables were filled. Our server came over pretty quickly and offered us water. It's too bad inflation and all, so it feels fairly overpriced relative to what you can get in Chinatown, but a lot of it is just as good. The Winter Season fried zucchini was suitably spicy, and nice and crisp. The julienne on the vegetable was superb and worked to make the vegetables crisp. The spicy yellowfish was worthy as well; it's sitting in a hot broth, which contained some really nice sour mustard greens. The fish is fresh, which is not always the case for such a dish. The weakest of the dishes was the tofu pot with pork; here the oyster sauce used seemed not to mesh with the other flavors, including the spicy flavor. It was also a bit too salty. The cook and texture on the tofu was excellent though. The relation between front of house and back of house was really a well-oiled (no pun intended) machine and the establishment definitely has a strong business concept: make the dishes "authentic" enough for those who care to discern, but also make the environs fancy and the service of highest quality for those who care about those issues. Perhaps it is because my friends knew exactly what to order, but my experience here was impeccable. We went right as the restaurant opened on a Sunday and were the first to order. My friends ordered the Green Pepper Mixed with Century Egg (擂辣椒皮蛋), the Duck Yolk Breaded Crispy Shrimp (咸蛋黄焗虾仁), the Crispy Fish Fillet (香酥鱼片), the Stir-Fried King Oyster Mushroom (干锅杏鲍菇), and the Fish Maw Soup with Luffa (丝瓜鱼肚双菌汤). Everything was a hit in terms of flavor, and the overall amount given was acceptable. We were a party of 5 and the food was just about enough for all of us. My friends were pickier about the taste, most likely because they lived closer to the region that the cuisine (湘菜) represented, while I lived in the northeastern part of China prior to coming to the United States, but I thought everything was excellent and the best Chinese food that I have had in Boston. With all that said, as much as there was an acceptable amount of food, the price was a bit too much for the amount given. The amount of shrimp we got for the Duck Yolk Breaded Crispy Shrimp was not a lot for a dish that cost $32, and the Fish Maw Soup with Luffa was $28 when the amount given, in my opinion, should be closer to $20 maximum. The crispy fish fillet and the king oyster mushrooms contained a reasonable amount for the price ($26 and $24, respectively). That would be the major disadvantage, while the flavor was on point. In conclusion, I think people in Boston should give this place a shot if they want some authentic Chinese food. If you are not Chinese and are wondering if the food is authentic, yes it is. read more

Have heard so many good things about this place and happy to finally get to try it. If you're going around prime dinner time, you should make reservations. Otherwise come after 730pm and there shouldn't be a wait. We came on a Wednesday night and it was packed. Even at the bar. Our server, Bernadette was very attentive, friendly and made good suggestions. The decor is very modern and comfortable. They have a live musician but I'm not sure if that's daily. We liked that they had an option to choose spice level on most of their spicy dishes. We picked mild for everything because we wanted to taste the actual flavors of each dish without the spice being too overpowering. Decided to check out the Cambridge restaurant scene and this has been on wifeys list for a while. We decided to come here last minute and walked in. We were able to snag a table without a reservation because the table was close to the band. The band was nice but I understand it can get quite loud especially next to the drums. I am not an expert on hunan cuisine but based on the menu and some of the dishes we ordered, it was pretty authentic. If you are adventurous and curious of other Chinese cuisines and don't want to be intimidated this is the spot. For the folks who say it's too expensive for Chinese food, I would like to challenge you to keep an open mind. The service was great, the restaurant was clean, and served great food. Had a chance to try Sumiao while visiting boston this time around, and I was thoroughly surprised by this place! I had heard good things and this place was really a true hunan style chinese kitchen! I'll start with what I wouldn't get again: the chili chicken and the shrimp shumai. I assumed the chicken would come fried or something, but the chicken is just boiled it seems with a schechwan style broth / sauce poured over it (although this sauce was numbingly delicious). We ordered all our food mild, and I would order mild again if you are a medium spice lover! I would also not recommend the shrimp shumai again - it was fairly bland and only soy sauce was offered with it, we left most of it behind. Now onto the must try: we really enjoyed the sizzling fennel lamb cubes - they were really tender yet flavorful. The fire beef was also really flavorful, but I would recommend ordering a side of some white rice to eat along with it, as it doesn't already come offered with rice. Along the beef meat, I wish I had tried the yellow river beef, as every ad showed it and if the broth tastes anything like the one poured over the chili chicken, then that would be a must have! Will have to try it next time! The fried rice was also a little bland, so would try something else next time. The noodles were flavorful and would recommend. Eggplant and green beans were a great option for our vegetarians in the group. The service was okay - we came in as a larger party of 7 with clear availability at many tables. It took us talking to the manager for us to get seated indoors when there was clearly plenty availability left at the time in which we came in at. The hunan street noodles were light on the protein for the price and drowning in sauce. The sauce was more soy sauce salty than any other flavor which was disappointing. I thought the portion of noodles was decent. The duck was beautiful and well cooked. They didn't lie about the crispy part, definitely extraordinarily crispy. Paired with the fluffy buns, what tasted like homemade hoisin sauce and scallions/cucumber, it was good, but on it's own lacked seasoning. The duck portion size was the best bang for your buck out of all of the dishes. I really love that they have a thoughtful mock tail menu. I tried the hunan mule which was delightful. Hip modern Chinese restaurant specializing in Hunan cuisine near the outskirts of Kendall square quietly nestled amongst the myriad of biotechs in the area. We came in on a Sunday evening as a party of 2 without reservation. We were given the option of either waiting 15 minutes for a table, being seated immediately at the bar, or a 5 min wait at the long spine-y bench-like table that's shared space with other patrons - much like a large communal table of a cafeteria. We went with the communal table. We ordered the wok'd fried rice, beef on fire, and the Hunan Shang Gan (a spicy tofu dish). The timing of our dish arrivals was a little strange. We designed our order so the whole meal would be balanced, but the rice came first and relatively quick - maybe within 5-10 minutes of ordering. The other two dishes came out much later - to the point where we had already finished our rice causing us to order another 2 small bowls of rice to compliment our entrees. Intentional or not it was a little frustrating. The food overall is superb. Excellent taste and craftsmanship - the dishes felt very Hunan style. The rice hd the perfect amount of seasoning and salt but in my opinion was too small of an amount to justify the $20 price tag. The beef on fire was (sadly) not really on fire but really had a wonderful kick with just the right amount of spicy which would've gone great with the fried rice had they all came together at or around the same time. The tofu had great texture and was slightly milder than the beef but served as the perfect compliment. Honestly this place would have been 5-stars if they only upped the quantity in their all of their dishes. It's tasty, but expensive for how little of a portion you get. I suppose that's the cost of real estate in Kendall. For 2 people our total ended up being $95 for a fried rice, a beef entree, a tofu entree and a $10 beer. Not including tip. It was good but at that price I either expect a more outstanding experience or just more food in our tummies. tldr; excellent Hunan style restaurant that serves delicious and interesting food that is a little too expensive for its price range. The bartender was very attentive to us and always made sure we had water and if we needed anything. Now I will say this is probably one of the best general tso chicken I've had . It was so flavorful and had such a sweet savory flavor to it. The shrimp fried rice was also delicious it wasn't super oily or greasy like other Chinese food I've had. I made a reservation for a party of 2 at 6:45 on a weekday. There was traffic getting there so I called ahead at 6:30 to let the staff know I was running late. I arrived at the host stand at 7:01 pm and was told the reservation was cancelled since it was 15 minutes past the reservation time.. luckily they were still able to seat us. It was very busy for a weekday night. It was a full house with a couple parties waiting to be seated. The decor is nice and they play soft music so you can easily hold a conversation without yelling, even in a crowded restaurant. Service was slow, but expected given how busy it was. We ended up taking home the third dish since we had already almost finished the two others before the third came out. There was some confusion with our table number and another table because food runners kept trying to serve us food that we didn't order. The food: Lava fish (regular spicy): fish was fresh, good flavor but could tell the kitchen was busy because some pieces were much saltier than the others Beef on fire: never tasted a dish quite like this before. Beef bites with cilantro, Fresno peppers and bananas peppers. Regular spicy has a little kick, was very good. Eggplant and string beans: eggplants were cooked perfectly. My favorites were probably the sizzling lamb and the string beans, but all of the dishes were pretty good! The scallion pancakes came with some interesting spicy sauce that was definitely not authentic but went really well with the pancake, so I didn't mind (it was a bit tart/vinegary and had a small kick to it). The sizzling lamb was AMAZING and I would definitely get it again! I also enjoyed the la rou, but it was more like mushroom w/ la rou than la rou w/ mushroom, lol. It's a great, slightly more upscale and modern restaurant to celebrate a special occasion or just spend some time with friends and family. I really enjoyed it! One thing that does set Sumiao apart from other Chinese restaurants is the service, as you would expect with the steep price. Is the service worth the price? I would say no, but others might say otherwise since the restaurant was busy during a lunch on a rainy day. Foodwise, they again try to up their justify the increase price with their presentation. Cups and plates are the "fancier" type vs the normal white plates. Food quality might have been slightly better, but again nothing mind blowing. Only thing Sumiao has going for them, in my opinion, is making Hunan food. I do feel like that's one thing that separates them from the rest of the Chinese restaurants, most being Cantonese or Sichuan food. Food Went here with my family and ordered the following for a party of 6: Hunan street noodles, Shrimp on vermicelli nest, Sizzling whole fish on foil, Sizzling basil flavored eggplant, Beef on fire, Sumiao tofu pot, and a large rice. Overall, the balance of hot, sour, salty, and savory was so delicious! Standouts: the beef on fire was the favorite for most of us. The heat level was perfectly hot without overwhelming the ability to taste the other flavors. Beef was tender and thinly sliced, perfect with the rice. Eggplant was another standout, and had a really inviting wok flavor with beautifully vibrant purple color. The tofu pot was so savory and comforting. The hearty triangles of silken tofu were very pleasing to eat. We also devoured the sizzling fish, which was perfectly tender and expertly seasoned. The street noodles and shrimp on vermicelli were a welcome contrast to the more heavily flavored protein dishes. The street noodles were fairly mild and generously dressed with a glossy oyster sauce. The tender morsels of shrimp were a nice addition to the vermicelli, and the overall dish had a super savory seafood flavor due to the XO sauce. We enjoyed both of these dishes as well, although they don't smack you in the face with bold spices like the chili-containing dishes. Service Warm and friendly. The waiter was knowledgeable and we found the descriptions of heat levels to be true to description. We ordered "regular" spicy for all dishes except for the street noodles (which is non-spicy anyways) and the shrimp. While some of our family enjoy spicy food, others have a lower tolerance, and we felt everything was spicy enough to be satisfy the heat lovers while being mild enough that everyone could enjoy. The food came out efficiently and we enjoyed the meal at our own pace without feeling hurried. Ambiance The placing was bustling on a Saturday evening. This place doesn't look like much from the outside but it's a whole another story inside! We've driven by it many times but had never been there so decided to try it out for dinner. For a Thursday night it was quite packed and we even had a short wait, which is always a good sign! The interior is really nicely decorated and there were Fall decorations all over and also a cute entryway. The tables have cute turkey shaped candles which was a nice touch! They have live music every night which gives it a nice ambiance as well. The menu is extensive and lots of things looked good so we had to make some choices! We ordered hot and sour soup, scallion pancakes, dumplings (pan fried), yellow river fish and the sizzling beef and 2 orders of white rice. All the food was delicious. I think they describe themselves as Asian fusion and it was really tasty. I tend to judge places by their hot n sour soup and this one was great! Just the right amount of sour and heat and good balance of ingredients. Service was fast and friendly. We were really full and satisfied with our meal and also had plenty of leftovers to take home and I always like that he he! The tables were a little close and we couldn't help but overhear conversations from either side. And the dishes are a bit pricey but it is Cambridge after all. Portions were great though especially the fish dish - lasted several meals of leftovers so no complaints there lol! Overall great food, nice ambiance and good service! We'll be back to try some more of their yummy food for sure :) read more

Clean and modern interior. Attentive service. Ginger and scallion chix was excellent as was the wok'd fried rice. My hunan noodles were a little lacking in flavor but still good. Great jasmine tea. Nice scallion pancakes. My aeronaut ipa was very good. Nice selection of drinks. read more

Easy to get reservation one day early for a group of 7. You should reserve ahead if you're going for dinners friday night or weekend. Nice vibes; upscale asian restaurant with authentic hunan cuisine. All the dishes we ordered were good and came quick. My only complaint is that portion sizes were tiny for the price we had to pay. They also have interesting cocktails as well. read more

Come early! There's a lunch line! The food was great and worth the wait! Staff was friendly and kind and I loved the environment and location. The prices are a bit high but I guess for Cambridge it's to be expected. The braised Pork Belly I wish was a little more tender and flavorful but it's rare to find a place to make it perfectly. If in Cambridge try it out! It's a casual restaurant with a lot of choices on the menu. Great atmosphere and knowledgeable staff! I came in early so there was no wait but most of the tables were reserved! Keep that in mind. I sat alone at the bar! Yep, no family or friends today! The bar had ample room and I had Gyoza and the spicy cauliflower which is made with pork belly. Was it good? Yes! I liked it very much! I had a couple of sauces that spiced it up when they asked how spicy I wanted it I went less so I could do it myself! They have a full bar (I had a glass of Pinot Noir) and I am getting desert! Nice well rounded dinner and I ate most of it before remembering to take a pic, so I didn't but everyone's pics are pretty on point! It's good and authentic, clean and good atmosphere! read more
