I'm really impressed by Dr. Ryu. So impressed that I booked my husband an appointment the same afternoon! I've been going to Len's Crafters and America's Best for all my optometry needs as I thought that a private practice would be much more expensive. I couldn't have been so wrong! First off, Dr. Ryu did all the testing on me. My previous experience with the aforementioned places have been completely different. With Len's or America's Best, you were typically tested with a Tech and then you wait to see the doctor. With Summit, Dr. Ryu performed all the test himself and he also explained each and every single thing he was performing. (Did I understand them all? No. But, it was cool to learn a little bit about my eyes that no one has ever explained to me about.) It was such a positive experience especially to have a doctor exude such passion with what he does. I arrived at the appointment and got seen very quickly. Which has never happened to me where I used to go! I also bought a titanium frame from one of our trips and I was really hoping they can use the frame with my new prescription. I haven't had an eye exam in over ten years, but I decided to take advantage of the vision insurance my company offered. Booking an appointment was pretty easy (it could be done online through Booksy), and I got a call the next day to gather some information and confirm my appointment. I was greeted with a friendly welcome by the receptionist (so sorry, I didn't catch your name!) and Dr. Ryu. Dr. Ryu gave a very comprehensive eye exam and clearly explained my eye condition and how I was able to get by for so long without glasses. I stumbled upon Summit Optometric when one of the legs fell off of my glasses. I walked in with no appointment, and the front desk rep was really kind and let me know they'd fix them! They had them fixed same day! Prior to this, I was a patient at Miramar Eye Center and had been going to them for the last 5 years. They were awful, and always booked me 3-5 months out for an eye exam. But I had established rapport with them so I dealt with it. I was having more difficulty seeing out of my regular prescription, and was so desperate for an exam. I asked Summit while they were fixing my glasses, if they were accepting new patients, and she booked me an appointment for the same week! Fast forward - I met Dr. Ryu and had the most amazing experience. He really took the time to get to know me and treated me with the utmost respect and had incredible bedside manner. I had a lot of questions and he answered every single one with no hesitation. Miramar had forced me to get transitional lenses to "maximize my coverage" even though I had said I didn't want it, and it bothered me so much! I would only wear my glasses at night because of it. Dr. Ryu listened to my frustration and assured me that there would be no pressure at all to do anything I wasn't comfortable with. He explained my astigmatism and vision SO well! He even showed me online images to reference and understand. If I seemed hesitant on a certain sense, he would triple check to ensure it was perfect. I really can't say enough about how great he and his office staff are. They will make you feel like you're their only patient, and won't rush you! He was also super punctual! I don't remember who was working the front desk during my exam, but she was amazing as well! She helped me pick the perfect glasses, and was a total sweetheart. Also, the turn around time on getting my new glasses was less than a week. I got my glasses today, and was almost in tears because of how well I can see now! Called this office to get an exam for contacts. They said they don't accept my insurance and it would be a total of $110 for the exam, I said no problem. They then called me back the next day saying actually it's going to be $210 because the doctor wants to do a lens exam for glasses as well because I'm a new patient. I said I already am wearing glasses and have a prescription for them, the reason I am coming here is for contacts. They said nothing could be done because the doctor wants to give me an exam for glasses. Why? The whole point of me coming to get contacts is to move away from glasses, not get another prescription for, you know, glasses! Edit: so upon calling other optometrists it is pretty standard to have what is called a "comprehensive" exam because they base the contact prescription off the lens prescription. So my problem here lies with the woman working the phones. Unhelpful and uninformed when failing to explain all of this to me. After my last communication with Dr. Ryu I knew I had to write this review for his practice. Dr. Ryu is by far the best doctor I've had in my entire life. His personality puts you at ease rather than clam you up, and that is vital for me when visiting any medical practice. He doesn't make you feel like "just another patient" and was extremely attentive during our appointment. To top it off, the office is spectacularly clean and the receptionist is easy to work with over the phone. Dr Ryu is obviously a very caring doctor. I had to visit his office when I developed inflammation in my eyelid. Looking at my eye he was able to quickly put me at ease letting me know his diagnosis and that it was a very common & easily treatable blockage of the tear gland duct. He prescribed medicine to help with healing and before i even got home, he contacted me letting me know that my prescription was ready for pick up at my local pharmacy. The real value of his services was that with his good recommendations for treatment and medicine, my eyelid was back to normal in a matter of days and I was back to work.
