I have been a patient of Dr. Shields for a couple of years. I had an eye issue that occurred during a migraine and later had some weird eye symptoms that concerned me. I called the office and even though they were booked solid for the day they worked me in on the doctor's lunch hour. Dr. Shields listened to my concerns and checked my eyes very thoroughly using different machines and apparatus. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a great doctor. I loved my experience here! First of all, they have very strict covid protocol where they only allow people with appointments in. All staff is wearing masks the entire time. I loved the optometrist that I worked with, Dr. Lisa. She was so patient with me as I asked a million questions and was very personable and made my appointment very enjoyable. My entire family goes to Sam Shields for eye exams, contacts, and glasses. The staff there is very helpful and I've always enjoyed my visits with the doctors. I feel like lately my eyes have been changing and they have helped me find the right prescription that works for me. They taught my son to wear contacts and he's 13. It has been so life changing for my 13 year old. He loves having the option to not wear his glasses. When I have a frame that I just need new lenses in, the staff there have always been super helpful in getting my insurance coverage and helping me understand all the options I have for the lenses. Had a family visit on Monday and so grateful was able to make an appointment with this team. The Dr. was so accommodating and so kind and explained everything to all my kids it was so greatly appreciated. There was a specific assistant, he was such an amazing help and so assisted my first two kids through the whole process. He took time to explain each machine briefly but directed what to do and helped and broke down coverage of my insurance and assisted picking out frames. *** let me start by saying we had our old eye doctor Dr. Ryu for 7 yrs and only switch due to insurance changes. When we find a good eye doc we like to stay with them. We recently switched to Dr Roger's and were very happy however he became I'll and we were unable to get in when our sone had an emergency eye problem, he recommended this office and I am so grateful he did!!! They were very thoughtful to his situation and got him in next morning. They insurance was issue but they offered clear cash option on exam and what is covered and what a eye exam vs the medical eye exam entails. Once in room doc examined him and then when my child became uncomfortable with the light on his injured eye and refused to continue the doctor was patient and let me try to calm him. We ended up having to end exam early with out viewing scratch in his eye completely however doc explained what to look for, nexts steps and put together follow up plan, he then walked us to front and stated no charge...... honestly I was amazed. I just had my youngest child so while not working on my maternity leave I have been on a budget this was an unexpected and very very appreciated surprise, I almost cried and no not just the hormones. It's just a honestly nice kindness that made a world of difference to us at this time. Care and compassion are rare to find in a medical/dental/optical office but HERE you have it!!! read more

I moved to Simi Valley and needed to find an optometrist. I had tried a few before going to W Sam Shields. The other one didn't have very good selections of frames, were difficult to deal with getting appointments, or hard to contact with someone about a prescription etc. W Sam Shields is a top notch operation. They are so nice, professional, reliable, and great about scheduling visits. They remind you about appointments and follow through on insurance, paperwork, and claims. Dottie really takes care of business and makes sure your glasses are adjusted correctly, tightened, and all the details. Mr. Shields is a very nice, pleasant, and professional gentleman. I like to find unique designer frames and ordering them or having my prescription lenses put-in my frames. They were able to get my custom frames made and installed in my glasses, and they were perfect! They were a pleasure to deal with and continued to delight when I had an issue with the anti-glare coating. Dottie informed me I had a warranty (to my surprise) and they quickly ordered me replacement lenses. She scheduled me to drop off the frames during the Pandemic and had the lenses swapped out within 15min. I appreciate their awesome service and highly recommend them! read more

I have been seeing Dr. Shields on an annual basis for at least 5, possibly ten years now. Long enough he is now overseeing my transition to progressive lenses! I have always found him incredibly competent and thorough in his care. Up to date equipment, clean office with good support staff and very professional and skilled at his job. That's enough for 4 stars and a recommendation. What puts it over the top to 5 stars for me is that I genuinely look forward to my appointment each year. Dr. Shields always remembers who I am and is just an interesting, genuine person to talk with. Doesn't slow down my appointment or distract him from the job at hand, but he is able to carry on a conversation worth having while also keeping me very informed as to what is going on with my eyes, what he recommends if any changes are needed and, most importantly for me, why he is making those recommendations. Personable and helpful from the doctor to the staff. I would recommend them to anyone. I mean the frames are expensive, but my guess is it's industry standard considering they are designer names. Glasses are just dang expensive in general. I am most impressed by the efficient and excellent service. I am always in and out super fast. I am so very frustrated and disappointed with the way My family has been treated by Dr. Shield. My son's and I are new to the Simi Valley area and as a single mother I have a son with Downsyndrom and an 11 year old son both require annual eye exams and eyeglass prescriptions... In trying to be proactive to have there eye exams and new glasses available before the school year started I called Dr. Shields office and made an appointment. The appointment desk assistant let me know that Dr. Shields had a 2 month waiting period and I took the first available date I could get. Which was 8/8/14 2:00 PM. I get a phone call 8-6-14 from the same appt. assistant to let me know the doctor won't be in 8/8/14 and she was going to have to reschedule for 9-15-14 at 4:00 PM for both my boys... I grumbled a bit, but what could I do my boys needed their check ups and new glasses. Now its after the new school year that they will be getting their new and very much needed glasses! Now, I get a call 9-8-14 and Dr. Shields does not want the Gold Coast Members (Medi-CAl) insurance clients seen on Monday's and the appointment assistant states that next available appointment isn't available until Oct. 24, 2014 at 2:00 PM. WHHHAAAATTTT!!!! This is outrageous.... How awful and wrong... So because we are Medi-Cal we're second class citizens... I asked the assistant to please have the Dr. Call me and I have not heard from him... Its a different kind of discrimination and it hurts! Shame on you Dr. Fields!!! read more

We moved from Santa Clarita three years ago and are lucky to have found Dr. Shields. He and his staff are excellent. Our previous optometrist mentioned that my husband had Macular Degeneration but never followed up on it. On our first visit, Dr. Shields recommened that my husband go to a retinal specialist. My husband did so and it was discovered he had advanced Macular Degeneration for his age. Thankfully, Dr. Shields helped in preventing his eyes from getting worse. Dr. Shields is so personable and takes his time with patients. He cares about his patients and listens to their concerns. His staff is also very responsive to patients needs.
