What was frustrating was we made it very clear that it was our first time, and our waitress did not inform us that there is an automatic gratuity added in at 12%. Also, everyone should know that whatever food you don't eat, they will pack it up to go for you and charge you $12.95/lb. Chicken katsu curry was fatty chicken, not enough curry, basically all rice. Beef curry is basically all rice with some raw beef strips on top. Tonkatsu ramen broth was bland and kind of strange tasting. Mango rolls were really good. Great AYCE sushi place to visit! We were a bit hesitant at first about the quality of the fish but it didn't disappoint! The salmon was our favorite with thickness of the cut and butteriness of the flavor. I would recommend for anyone who's hungry for lots of sushi! Their hot food also seemed delicious but we were so full from sashimi that we couldnt try. Rolls were decent.. Fried Oysters were good.. Shrimp Tempura was okay.. Steak Curry lacked flavor.. Nigiri and Sashimi are great and is the way to go! Our first experience at AYCE sushi was so fun! Have been eyeing this chain for awhile and decided to stop by the Kelso location on our road trip to Portland. Looks like an old Shari's or Denny's was converted to Sumo so lots of dining space and parking right off the highway so super convenient. Came on a weekday late lunch (goes until 3pm) so place was mostly empty which was great for lunch with busy littles. We chose the silver option which was a great deal though very limited roll options. Hot food bar was decent with several options (see pictures attached). Robot was so cool, the kids loved the delivery and service was fast. Bathrooms were clean and I appreciated the inclusion of a baby changing table. Let's start with a couple of the uniques! They have two levels. Silver & Gold. Gold is everything! Silver is Buffet and listed items on the menu marked for Silver. You can order 15 items every 30 min per table. Maximum of 1.5h time. All you can eat. The food was fresh, the inside of the business was clean. We just discovered that they have a gluten free menu and will prepare GF items in a separate area of the kitchen to prevent cross contamination. Came in for dinner and was pleasantly surprised with the quality and speediness of the food prep. The buffet part had the usual fried rice, gyoza, crab puffs, salads, and desserts. Everything we ate was ok to pretty good. The best part was how everything you order is made fresh and the appropriate temp. I will say, it does take a minute to figure out how this model works. First there's lunch vs dinner, buffet only vs buffet + ordering food, then there's the Silver vs Gold option regarding what items you can order from the kitchen. I really never figured out the difference between the Gold and Silver options when picking buffet only since we got the full-meal-deal package. And to be honest, I feel like I would order the buffet only half the time. The interior is updated nicely, the booths are kind of small though. The only thing I can really complain about were the seats. The wait staff did wipe tables, but the seats were full of oily crumbs. I never saw them wipe seats at any time. It's a new staff that's young and inexperienced, so definitely not the worst thing in the world. They are freshly listed on Doordash (I have never seen them before today and order meals daily) and the prices are very affordable (after a few months, most menus for new businesses increase so time will tell if they remain so) The food itself was delicious, I tried the two flavors of grilled beef and a miso soup. As a diabetic, these seemed very low carb, the beef came with grilled onions, thought it would just be the beef. The soup was broth, tofu and seaweed which is exactly what I wanted. Delivery also came in an insulated reusable bag with a fabric handle( was very surprised at that), and the soy sauce packet, napkins all had the sumo logo on them. That said the food and service is where this place truly shines bright! My wife ordered from the gold menu and I ordered from the silver menu. What was impressive was the selection of vegetarian options! Everything was delicious and filling! Constantly we had servers helping us with our first visit to the place and from more foods and drinks. In the end they helped us even join their rewards program. Tried this new place in Kelso tonight and it exceeded my expectations! For dinner the price of $30 for AYCE is amazing! You can either choose the silver or gold option, just know that everyone at the table will have to be the same option. I'm not a fan of buffets, and it's nice that you can order off a menu for fresh items. The beef tataki was delicious! Everything was so fresh. The buffet food was hot and the items were restocked frequently. The restaurant was clean and they turned the tables over very quickly. Everyone was friendly and so helpful! Everything tasted like it had some sort of peanut to it, including the salad. The soup was weak broth. Everything tasted the same. The buffet section was lacking in any kind of selection; and, the staff was slow to restock. My wife, and I, gave it a few days; and, went to Asian Buffet, also in Kelso; which, is half the price, has a super selection; and, everything is always fresh, just to see if we were maybe wrong about Sumo Sushi. We weren't wrong, Sumo Sushi is awful. Plain and simple. Overpriced, bizarre pricing structure; and, tastes like it was made last week. The prices were ok, but I don't like how they charge you for leftovers on your plate (per pound). I also didn't like how their servings are about 6 pieces of sushi per plate. I don't want to eat 6 pieces of the same thing, I want to eat one. I also don't want to be eating so much rice (in katsu chicken dish), I just want to try the chicken... the food at the bar is absolutely disgusting. It tastes like microwaveable food. We opted for the silver as there were many choices and we were fine with what was offered. You can order from the menu and you still get to partake of the buffet. The service was excellent the food was stellar. Everything was fresh and flavorful. We ordered the avocado salad from the menu and it was delicious with plenty of thinly sliced avocado, the dressing was light and refreshing. The buffet had a crawfish boil with everything that a boil would contain and so many other choices. We have discovered shrimp balls! They were sooooo good! Crispy on the outside and tender and flavorful on the inside. I went for lunch on their first Monday open, and despite the heavy rain they were doing a brisk business. They did a really nice job on the decor and there were plenty of friendly staff to assist with questions, mostly about ordering using the QR app. Their buffet had a lot of sides so be careful you don't fill up there first. Quality was very good, and service was fast, less than 10 minutes for the sushi to start coming by robot. I was excited to try the takoyaki (octopus) balls that are a popular Japanese street food, but found them too salty and umami for my personal taste. Overall I would have liked a list of the ingredients used in many of their rolls as I'm not a fan of cream cheese and mayo. There was a service charge of 12% in lieu of tipping.
