I love buffets and it's great to see another one open up. There is a certain formula for Asian buffets that is kind of standard. Hiyaku buffet is on the more pricey side of any buffet in the area. It's like $30 on the weekend. The extra $ does get you a cleaner place with a bit more selection. The sushi here is the best I've tried at an asian buffet. It's above the typical mediocre quality. The food variety is decent. They have some things here I haven't seen anywhere else like giant beef bones! There is even a good selection of crab with their dinner/weekend availability. When we were low on napkins and hot water, she refilled it very quickly. She also cleaned up our finished plates at a great pace, too even though it was busy. Food: we went during a weekday when they opened. We were afraid that we would get leftover foods but overall, the foods I ate were fresh and piping hot. I ate a lot of sushi, seafood, and veggies. The fried foods were overall good, especially their fried fish. Those who like seafood would enjoy this place because aside from fried seafood, they also had steamed and baked. I liked their muscles. It was tender and no sand. The clams were my least favorite as they were super tiny and it felt like I was chewing gum. Veggies were fine and had a good variety. Sushi's rice was surpassingly not bad as sushi at buffets are usually hard and dry but this was fine and bite sized so I didn't feel full after eating the rolls. We went again today at around 11:30 and once again there was no peanut chicken. Also many of the other items were very poor quality. Orange chicken was inedible due to being tough and very little source. Many of the items on the buffet looked like they were reheated from yesterdays leftovers. Some of the fruit offerings were also poor quality. Grapes that were half rotten. The standards are slowly going downhill here. When they first opened it was very good, but they have been unable to maintain the quality. I don't eat sushi so I can't comment on that, but it looked nice visually. I think we won't be going back for a while but we hope that they might read these comments and make some changes for the better. Was able to beat the crowd on the weekend and got to finally check this spot out. Inside is big and open with high ceiling, pretty decors, and ton of seatings. I like the straightforward layout of the buffet lines. They also have so many variety of food and options to choose from: sushi, Chinese, Korean etc. Very surprised by the abundance of seafood. Some items were better than others. I'd recommend their chicken and beef, both options were tender. The fried items were best when they came out fresh, of course. The place always look neat and clean especially for a Buffet. The waiter was very attentive. In fact all the staff is very friendly. Seafood sitting out makes me nervous.) but no line of people. We only waited a couple minutes to be seated. Sweet spot for sure as there was a line out the door and around the building when we left. The food was only ok. I was hoping for more Chinese or stir fry dishes. There was lots of sushi, lots of seafood, and several deep fried things I couldn't identify. There are signs but most of them were clearly wrong so I had to guess what I was dishing up. If you can get the fried stuff when it's fresh it's way better. But anything deep fried that's been sitting out gets gross fast. My family liked their sushi but said they get better quality for less at their favorite sushi places. The only junk thing about the crab legs , serve chilled. There is no butter, which I asked the waitress, she was nice to bring me some. I rather have boiled/hot crab legs but this is fine. The crab legs goes fast but they do refill them. I try to avoid buffets, tend to over-indulge but why not we are on vacation?! In most circumstances, I avoid buffets. Especially Chinese buffets with "sushi," but this place is spectacular. It's clean, open, with a lot of seating. The seating is separated from the food area, which is a bit different than the Vegas buffets I'm used to. It's a walk to get to certain foods, but you're gonna need it! Note that lunch is $19.99/person and does not have crab legs - those are for dinner. All of the food, especially the peanut butter chicken (don't skip!), teriyaki chicken skewers, and select sushi rolls were superb. In general, everything was great. Drove past this place a few days ago and saw a line out the door and knew I had to try. I went to lunch which was very reasonable at $20.00. It had been a while since I had gone to a buffet and can't deny that this place was super nice, everything felt clean and gorgeous sitting areas. Much bigger than I had anticipated from the exterior. I had a little bit of everything. There were definitely some stand outs. I'll start with the one downside was the sushi. I dont know if I just had a bad day but some of it just didnt taste very fresh. So after trying some I skipped it and stuck with the hot food. And wow! I was in heaven. From one end they have the seafood or Korean section with shrimp and clams. Kim chi and seafood salad mixes. Near the middle was more Japanese nigiri and various types of sushi. And more towards the right is where the Chinese style noodles, steamed fish, steamed veggies, and buns were. Further in the back were the soups, dessert pastries, and an ice cream fridge. I practically took one of each item and was satisfied with majority of what i tried. Especially loved the crispy wings! # Dining Area & Service # Plenty to small tables, and long tables for larger groups. They even have booths along the sides. We were seated in the large dining hall, so I felt there was enough spacing between tables even with heavy foot traffic. As for our waiter, he did a great job refilling our water cups and drinks, and more importantly taking our used plates away. # Final Verdict & a Pro Tip # I'm willing to do lunch here again, simply because of price! We finally decided to try this place and got here about 10 minutes before opening on a Wednesday. We were second in line and the line got pretty long, maybe three or four minutes before opening time. Went Saturday at 4:30pm and there was a line of 20 people ahead of us. The wait wasn't too bad, about 20-30 minutes. Soda is not included. Service was really prompt and friendly. Food choices were good with short ribs , cocktail shrimp, tempura, clams and all tasty and great. I try that they are constantly refreshing the food so it is hot and fresh. The crab legs were too salty for my liking. Don't get the steak unless you want to put your jaws through some exercise. We came on NYE at 1:00 pm for lunch. There was a short line with maybe seven or eight groups before us. Took about 15 minutes to get seated... not bad. Parking lot was fairly full but we found parking. Restaurant is very clean because it's so new. I believe this is a new building shortly after Fred Meyers on 158th. No crab or short ribs for lunch but for $19.99, I can't complain. Drinks are an additional $2.99. Food was temperature appropriate and overall tasted good. This AYCE buffet is a mixture of Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Everything tasted good and nothing was overly greasy or salty. Pass on desserts- with the exception of the ice cream bin, the sweets really weren't that good. But the fruit looked fresh! Servers are nice and they clean plates frequently from the table and refill drinks as needed. If they upped their desserts, I'd consider changing my stars to five. We'll be back. The restaurant is nicely decorated and very clean - the food service area is well tended and constantly wiped down by staff and i liked that. The hot foods, especially the fried ones, are my favorite. The lightly battered fish was crispy and tender, and tempura is about as good as any other sit down restaurant. The cold salads have some nice Asian items including wood ear, seaweed, and poke! The sushi rolls are plump and they do not skimp on ingredients - no tiny rolls that's mostly rice but large rolls with mostly ingredients your want to eat. There were clams and mussels and they were fine... you just have to figure out if you want some sauce or make a lemon pepper dip for yourself. Since I drive by everyday for work, it's been a long time coming to see this place open up. We came in for a last minute lunch plan to see what it's like, and it didn't disappoint. The space is gigantic and beautifully decorated, the ceiling felt almost Vegas-ish, specifically kind of like the Bellagio hotel vibe. Food wise, everything tasted fresh, the flavors are mostly mediocre, but meets the expectation for a buffet. Good variety of sushi and hot food comparing to the few local Asian buffets. I was initially excited for this new buffet since they are starting to make a comeback. This was a let down. Parking is bonkers since it was busy even for a Monday. As soon as we walked in, it was very confusing of where to go. A host person saw us and took us to a table right away despite the chaos in the lobby, The price was a tad high for lunch and the food options were underwhelming. The food was under seasoned and it's sad when the noodles and beef were the best which wasn't saying much. My friend said the sushi and seafood was very bland not really recommended. You front door is the gateway for return customers. The place was busy, the tables spacing is sh!t. I understand trying to maximize space, but it was hands down ridiculous. Chairs between tables, made it hard to get out, banging into other customers just happened, this is just not a good experience. Next time we will only get a booth even if we need to wait. Another this needs to be fixed. The buffet was fantastic, excellent selection of food including sushi and sashimi down to soup and desserts. The staff kept the food flowing and I never saw anything out. The freshness was great for a buffet. This helps elevate my experience, but they need to work on front end and table spacing. Dined in on a Sunday a little after they opened. Overall, considering the limited amount of buffets around the Portland metro area, Hiyaku is not too bad at all. Speaking from the context of asian buffet food quality, the flavor of the food wasn't bad at all. I honestly had no expectations on this aspect but it pleasantly surprised me. The sushi honestly was the one that surprised me the most. Sushi is typically the weak link in a lot of asian buffets but I surprisingly like the sushi here. The rice was not hard at all and the flavor was pretty good. I will say though that the selection they offer is a bit limited compared to a lot of other buffets I have been to. But this can be a good thing too tbh as they can focus more on the quality of what they put out compared to quantity. Overall I would say that at least 1/3 of the food will be seafood. The interior of this buffet is very appealing. It's by all means no Vegas status buffet, but man the ambience and ceiling art was very appealing. There is plenty of seating as well. The service was nice too. They were quick with the seating and checked up on us an appropriate enough of times. expect to pay around $27-30 depending on what days and times you go. Really nice buffet with lots of offerings. They have a multitude of sushi to choose from and sashimi as well. Don't expect ultra-fresh sushi grade fish as this is a buffet. More on volume rather than quality. The buffet layout is open and I didn't feel cramped at all. There's also a desert area tucked behind the front counter and a refrigerator that has different flavors of ice cream to choose from. We barely avoided the large rush of people that soon formed behind us. After 1hr of eating, the line was still growing and reached to the end of the building. This can be an issue especially if it's raining outside. Overall we had a great experience. The hot foods (try the ribs- soft and delicious) were a delight and they also have fruit for those who want to have something to wash down after the main meal.
