We came in during a dinner rush so we put our name on the list and waited a good 20 minutes. The space is small but practical, we a small sushi bar in the back. The hostess seated us and provided menus. Their drink menu had a number of tasty sounding options, all at a good price so I ordered the Yuzu Sour. It was better than a basic Whiskey Sour, you could still taste its roots but smoother with a hint of pomegranate. I ordered the Veggie Gyoza app and the Veggie Tempura app. Prices were incredibly reasonable and the food tasted great. I see why they are so busy - this is a combo unheard of these days. Hubby got the Hand Roll Combo which came with Miso Soup. He really enjoyed it. This location is easy to find in downtown Rochester, although it's still metered parking in the street. My friend loves this place and told me I had to try it--and after going there with her yesterday, I can see why she does! Sumo Sushi and Seafood is located right on Main St. in downtown Rochester. There is street parking in front of the building, and a parking garage just a few minutes walk away. The sake flights are a nice way to try a few different flavors. I chose the plum, lychee, and mango. I loved the plum one a lot! If you order over $18 of food, you can choose between a complimentary miso soup or salad. For our rolls, we got the Spicy Crunchy Tuna, which I liked because the spicy tuna was mixed inside of the role. The Three Musketeers tempura roll had tuna, salmon, and yellowtail and was topped with spicy mayo and sweet soy. It was very delicious! The red dragon roll had shrimp tempura, cucumber, and cream cheese inside and was topped with torched salmon and chili crunchy garlic, which added a nice flavor to it. I can't believe I haven't written a review for Sumo Sushi yet! I literally always thought that I had since I've been coming here regularly for YEARS! But I've been remiss! Basically, Sumo Sushi is my go-to sushi spot in Rochester. To be completely fair, there's really not that much great sushi in the Rochester area, but still I wouldn't just go to anywhere to indulge in my forever-present sushi craving if it wasn't properly GOOD! Sumo is tried and true! I've ordered both in the restaurant and gotten carryout and they do it great both ways! There are so many delicious rolls of all sorts of variety, so there is truly something for everyone here! My personal favorites are their Sunday Morning roll and their Green River rolls! I don't know what they put into that green sauce, but it is SO addicting! And the Sunday Morning roll is literally lightly tempura-ed to perfection every time! They use such great, fresh ingredients, the service is always so quick and efficient, and you will never find yourself waiting too long to get a seat here! I've taken so many people to Sumo Sushi when they come to visit me in Rochester and we have never had one unsatisfied customer! It's a great experience every time and I'm thankful that they have existed in the heart of downtown Rochester for so long and I hope they stay forever!!! read more

I'll preface this by saying we are consistent diners here however when we place carry out orders, the tone changes completely. Last night, for the second consecutive time we received the wrong order. I was on time, food was promised at 8:21 (per their receipt) and received the food at 8:51. When I paid, I confirmed the entirety of the order since there was an issue (language barrier when calling in the order). Got home and found that both rolls were not what we ordered despite getting the sauce for the correct rolls. When I called I was treated rudely and without the attention of the person on the phone. Was made to describe the rolls I received, for what reason I cannot imagine. Finally spoke with a manager who refunded my order. Be wary of takeout, they simply cannot get it right. Next time, we'll eat in because we do enjoy the food. read more

A Sushi restaurant that has a gluten free menu, yes please! I've had the pleasure of eating take out from Sumo Sushi multiple times. Each time, the staff have been super friendly. Food was ready within 15 minutes, even when the restaurant was packed. I highly recommend this place. read more

Sumo remains our go to for sushi in Rochester/Rochester Hills. The true virtue of the place is that their sushi is very fresh and served at what I deem the perfect temperature. Not too cold, so you get maximum flavor. Prices have gone up, just like everywhere else and sometimes the staff is a little less than attentive, but those are small beefs with an otherwise great dining experience. This Wed night was slow so we were happy to be in a restaurant that wasn't as busy. We had the salad with ginger dressing which is always "lick the bowl clean" tasty. (No, I didn't really lick the bowl, but I wanted to). I had the Sushi Combo and a Three Musketeers roll with 3 types of fish. The roll didn't have much going on. Service was good and the ambiance was your average busy sushi place I would say. I read a review taking about their green sauce and chose a roll with it. I found it to be a polarizing experience. The flavor was good but kind of strange to me mixed with the sushi roll, also for a visual eater it's doesn't make the most appetizing image when your roll is served in a pool of green sauce. The roll is just ok, it's actually a little dry because unlike other shrimp tempura rolls there is no avocado or cucumber inside only fried shrimp. The crab salad on top gave it what it needed. I stopped in for a weekday lunch and wasn't disappointed. I opted for the Bento box, with Chicken Teriyaki. The dish included edamame, CA roll with spicy Mayo, vegetable gyoza, rice and vegetables, plus a salad with ginger dressing. Everything was delicious, but the chicken was a little bit tough. I don't go out for sushi often, but when I do, I like to try a new spot. I came here on whim because I really didn't feel like going out of my way for sushi. While parking in downtown Rochester can be tricky and painful at times, I was able to snag a spot in the back and cut through to the main strip to get into the restaurant. He was also my server, which I liked because he was super nice. I scoured the menu, and wasn't sure what to get. the server directed met to the back of the menu, and mentioned that they had lunch specials going until 5 (even on a Saturday) and to check some of them out. Thank goodness he said something, because I immediately found some food I wanted. I got the sushi special that came with a cup of Miso soup, a california roll and some other stuff. It was actually pretty good and very filling. Now mind you, I am not a sushi connoisseur, btu some places do it better than others. The food was really good, and I really did like it. Sushi was fresh, soup was filling and I really liked the variety that I got. After tax, my bill was only $9.01! Whattt? Winning. I've spent more on sushi and this place was not as expensive as I thought it would have been. If I had gotten a larger entree, than yes, it would have been more, but I wasn't that hungry. I liked it here for a few reasons. First, the server was really helpful in guiding me what to get. for whatever reason, I always have a million questions when it comes to sushi and literally need my hand held when it comes to ordering. Some places are to busy to answer all my questions, and I get it, but really. the help really made a difference. The price was spot on and I liked my food. Winning. Plus, weekend lunch specials! Ive been coming here FOREVER. Its a Rochester staple. If you are a sushi snob, this will not be your favorite. I have a hard time believing the fish is the freshest or most quality, but if alL you know is grocery store sushi this stuff will blow your socks off. I loved the avocado boats off the app menu. A super unique plate with great flavor and texture. The star of the show has to be the ginger dressing. So yesterday my Mom and I decided to check out a new Sushi place. We're notorious for going to Nippon on Telegraph in Bloomfield but yesterday we decided on Rochester. It was a bright sunny day and Rochester is known for different diners and eateries. The atmosphere at Sumo is very cool. It has a loungy, new age kinda vibe. There are tons of selections of Rolls which they arrange beautifully. There are also noodle and rice bowl options for those who want something a little different. Carry out today. It was ready when I arrived. We got two orders of Hibachi. We got about 8 pieces of cut up meat for each order, which was so little and not filling. There were more carrots in the take out than meat. More broccoli than meat. Additionally, the meat was overcooked and dry. Had sushi in the past and it was great. I've been coming here for years. I decided I should leave a review after reading all of the RUDE, entitled comments that I think are inaccurate. Especially the one that goes in to politics and digs the waitstaff for being "progressive" I can't imagine the types of people the waitstaff deal with but the comments give you some idea. Food is top notch but after spending $80 on carry out sushi they refused to provide me with "free" spicy mayo. You dish it out along with ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce for your dine in guests but you want to charge me for a 1 oz ramiken of seasoned mayo? IOn top of that being absolutely ridiculous I asked the employee for some at the time of my pick up. She repeats my request back to me, says nothing about adding a charged, cashes me out and then has a debate with another employee about providing it to me. I waited beyond my expected pick up time, paid to park, & tipped the staff as well. I'll enjoy the sushi I'm sure but I won't be traveling 30 minutes for take out any time soon. read more
