Absolutely the worst sushi restaurant I have ever eaten at. My family used to come here all the time before the new management (but to be honest, the old management wasn't any better). As you can see in most of the other negative reviews, their service is HORRIBLE. Here's why: The last time we went (which will be the last time ever), we ordered a combo dinner that included meat and tempura vegetables. When we started to eat, we smelled something really bad but couldn't tell where it was coming from. Then we looked at the vegetables inside the tempura. They were rotten. Brown and smelly. We showed our waitress and she said "oh....well thanks for telling us" and walked away. No new meal brought out, no comped plate, no apology. So, rotten food (literally), below sub-par sushi (always; I have never once had good sushi from here-- I'm a sushi nerd so I'm hard to impress but this stuff is always gross and almost never fresh), poor service, and over-priced. With over 8 sushi places to choose from in this tiny city, I don't know how this place stays afloat. :( read more

Wow this place has changed a lot under new management, for the better! They are very polite now and the portions got a lot larger. The tempura entree was 3 times bigger than I was expecting it to be. The waitress informed me I could ask for more rice for my chirashi if I needed it. She also helped us with the menu and was very polite when informing us that some items we ordered were out for the day. Also everyone in our group got a miso soup, not just those who ordered entrees. I have been going to Sumo for years under many different management changes and this is definitely the best so far. It's like a totally different restaurant, in a good way. read more

I use to come here when I was in high school and remember the prices were affordable. I came in and ordered 4 handrolls to go. The total was $20 for simple handrolls which is on the higher end compared to other sushi restaurant. They said it would take 15 mins for our order to be ready, we waited for 40 minutes... Turns out, when I asked about it, our order was sitting on the counter the entire time and they forgot to give it to us. read more

This is some of my favorite sushi in and around LA. The rolls are to die for, and packed with big helpings of fish. I've never had such generous portions at a sushi restaurant. And if you're one of those who turns her nose up at sushi with cream cheese in it (like me!), don't be a snob here. I found this place on yelp. Nice Japanese style decor inside and fairly large sushi bar. They have real good and in expensive happy hour sushi rolls. All the fish tasted flavorful and fresh. I will be returning! read more

My wife and I were regulars at sumo's even before it was sumo sushi. We would go 2 maybe 3 times a month. Our favorites included the 3 item combos, vegas rolls, and spicy tuna rolls. And there salad dressing (seseame, and peanut butter, i believe) was simply to die for. I put it on litterally everything. 5 stars for the dressing... HOWEVER... Last time I went in, I wanted to buy a pint of the dressing, and some A-hole, who i assume was the owner, starting yelling at one of the twin hostesses. She told me she cant sell me the dressing anymore. So I said WHY NOT, loud enough for mr. A to hear me. He turned around and said in a very rude way "we are not a market, if you want salad dressing go to ralphs"... I could not believe it. I still may go back because other than him, the two twin waitresses are awesome and the food is delicious... So needless to say if i take my family in and that guy is there, I will turn around and walk out... Final score: Food: 5* Service: 5* The a@#$%& owner: 0* read more

Yama was ridiculously overcrowded last Friday, and not wanting to sit at a teppanyaki table nor have our party of 6 spread out over 2 booths (seriously, WTF) decided we hadn't been to Sumo in awhile...a 5 minute drive later, we were seated and perusing the extensive roll menu, which is very reasonably priced compared to other sushi spots in the 805. There was some confusion over one of the rolls (the "spicy tuna" roll included very little spicy tuna and used a lot of imitation crab as filler, and they use WAAAAY too much sauce on the rolls...but the nigiri that I ordered was fresh, of decent quality and generous with the portions. Service is hit and miss...we were there for about 90 minutes and at some points were approached (harassed?) every 5 minutes, and at one point went 20 minutes without being checked on, the only time I really wanted or needed another beer. You could do worse. If you're headed to a movie at Edwards or Paseo Camarillo, this is a good bet. read more

Is there less then one star? That is what I would give this place. I took my family out for sushi and had the worst experience! The waitres was rude, uninterested in waiting on us. We waited for 30 minutes to put in our order so I finally walked it over to the sushi chief myself, that upset her so from then on we got no service. I used to come here a lot when I worked in Camarillo. I was so excited to come back but this experience may have been my last time. When I used to come here I usually order the ultimate salmon roll and the hot night roll. Once upon arriving , no one was there in the front but it says please wait to be seated, so my friend and I waited. Then we were told to find a seat. As we got to the table it took 20 mins for a sever to even greet us. It was fine because it was kinda busy with one server working, which I don't understand on why management scheduled one person unless the other person couldn't make it, I figured management would help but we will get to that later. When the server finally got to take our drinks we ordered right away because we knew they wouldn't be able to get to us. I was fine as I worked in the restaurant business for awhile. Then my friends order came and my roll hasn't been delivered until 30 MINUTES!!! I was looking at the sushi bar from my table and I was like hmm that could be my roll. The sushi chef saw me starring and yelled for someone to run it because it's been sitting there. No one came until 15 mins after so I waited almost an hour on my roll. The manager comes to deliver it without apologizing or anything . Then we haven't even seen our server after that. She finally came and we were the only ones left in the restaurant and never checked up on us. While my roll was really good it was just at the sushi bar waiting for it to be ran. I was very disappointed that no one apologized for the wait to be served or how long our orders were taking. No one seemed to care, which was unfortunate. I used to love this place and now I need to find a new sushi spot. read more

If you haven't tried the Monkey Brain, I suggest you do so! It's my personal favorite because it's a mixture of sweet and spicy. The service is nice but on busy days, kind of slow, which is common. The Tempura Cali is a famous one too. Beware of the bathrooms though, it smells horrible! I've been here more than once and it always smells like that for some reason, maybe a bad sewage line? read more

We have eaten there quite a few times before and I do enjoy their food. But the other night I was served a cooked worm on my rice. The worm was right on top of the rice and pretty hard to miss .I was offered another plate but we just left since we figured most everything they serve has white rice. read more

Great price & sushi!! The sushi is so good here and service is superb. Whenever friends are in town, I take them here cause this is the only sushi place I know that does not skimp on fish. My boyfriend and I love this place. After having been to a couple other sushi spots, this is really our go to place. The service is usually consistent even when it is a little busy. Our personal favorite is the $15.99 sushi combo. It comes with salad, soup, and we pick the 4 pcs of sushi with the salmon sashimi. This place also has the absolute best albacore I've ever had. Pros: easy to get a table, decent sushi, really can't complain about the prices. Cons: sometimes sloppily made, inconsistent, the horrible music is enough to kill the experience. I've been here twice. It's quite nice inside, but the soundtrack will seriously ruin your appetite. It's like dentist office, bad lite radio songs. I didn't notice this so much the first time, but on my second trip, maybe it was louder, but it was actually distracting. The fish seems reasonably fresh and the prices aren't bad. I'm a little disturbed that sushi seems to be permanently 50% off. Service is friendly and quick. They give you a free sample of a couple of different things right off the bat, which is nice. On my first trip, the food was pretty tasty. The second trip, tuna and eel were good, but everything was so sloppily made it was falling apart as I picked it up with my chopsticks. I'm hoping there's something better in the area. They also have an all-you-can-eat option, which I haven't tried. It appears to have a lot of restrictions on it and seems like it could be a real rip-off. Bottom line--try it for yourself. Could be a hit or a miss. read more

My husband wanted to drive down here because of the delicious pink lady roll...however service was blah. We had to wait FOREVER for the waiter to take our paper, only doing so because I had to wave him down. There were 2 servers, place was not packed. We've been here once before and enjoyed it enough to comeback. I described this place as "best in town." After today's experience, I won't ever be back. It was taking 45 minutes for our food to come out. The manager, Stella, brought out my combo when we expressed how long the food had taken to arrive. She said she'd check the ticket and walked away. 15 minutes later as she's walking passed our table we confront her and ask about the situation. We express we didn't want the food that came out so late and to only give us a bill for what we had consumed, two half eaten CA rolls because we didn't feel like finishing them considering our experience was so bad. Stella states she will be taking care of everything and walks away. As we leave the building, she stops us before the door stating we hadn't paid for our bill. We stood confused as she just said she'd take care of it. After bantering back and forth, where she said, "I don't care". We paid for our two half eaten rolls and left. Great service....Joann our server was great. Food was delicious and very tasty. Edamame was very good. I had the Sumo sushi roll and it was very fresh. Kids all shared the Udon and us adults end up eating it because it was so yummy. We also got martinis (Sunrise Martini) and it was good. I grew up in this area. I used to come here for my birthday all the time. Now that I am older and have tried a lot of other sushi places, i can finally say that this is no longer my favorite sushi place in Camarillo. The eel is always cold, which is just wrong. The soy sauce has a chemical taste to it. The salmon is just never good anymore. The service and staff have always been great. The main entrees are also pretty decent. I'm just sad that the sushi is so lacking now. This was the first place I ever tried sushi. I doubt I'll be back anymore, very sad. read more

This place was bad, the sushi was very skinny meaning the rice was thin and after eating from that place it made my fiance and I felt like we were going to throw up afterwards. As for the service I wanted to get more lemonade our main waitress walk pass by us 4 times and seen my glass but didn't as if I wanted more to drink and another waitress walk pass by us and didn't as either. Sushi planet was closed for lunch time so I had to resort to this place. I was totally and completely offended, from the soy sauce stained seats to the painted piece of plywood used as a barrier between tables. My roll was rolled by a roller without the skills to roll. My plastic water cup looked liked it may have floated down the gutter and into the driveway of sumo sushi (thanks el niño.) The part that ticked me off the most was the economy grade chopsticks. I'm not going to waste my thumb power typing about the service in detail, but let's just say it was equivalent to the condition of the bathrooms. The fish was decent though, I will update if I end up getting sick. But if you have low standards for a sushi place and aren't a meticulous OCD psychopath like me, by all means make your way to sumo sushi. read more

Went to the outlets, and took a wrong turn and saw this place. The sushi was fresh, and you get a lot of food with there lunch specials. We ordered the Mr. Jalapeño, and my brother ordered the shrimp tempura roll and both were delicious. The special comes with a miso soup and a salad and 4 pieces of assorted sushi, we ate everything. The service was adequate at best, but will definitely come back here if I'm in the neighborhood. read more
