We walked in as a party of 4 and no one acknowledged us for about 15 minutes. From there, the hostess yelled into the crowd "is anyone waiting for a table?" Like there wasn't a crowd of people standing around waiting to be assisted. We were seated fairly quickly but the hostess was not at all friendly. She came back with plates and menus and literally tossed them on the table and walked away without saying anything. The waitress was friendly but didn't seem to have any knowledge of the menu or Japanese food. One of the sashimi's was $18 so I asked how many pieces came with it and she said "um I think 2 maybe?" She came back later and said "oh no there's 8 pieces, it's a roll".....but it was sashimi....Most of the sushi was ok, but the service was really uncomfortable. Maybe they were just having an off night or maybe everyone was new and still training? We ordered the yellowtail belly sashimi and it came out still frozen. We don't mind that the fish was previously frozen but we would prefer that it be thawed before having it served to us. We told another waitress that was helping us and told her that we didn't need a replacement, we just wanted the item removed from our bill. She took the plate and said she needed to ask the sushi counter and came back and told us that "it's supposed to be served that way" but she removed it from our bill since we didn't eat more than one piece. Lastly, after about and hour, all of our sushi had been served but my mom's yakitori was still not out. We asked about it and the same waitress that told us that the sashimi was supposed to be served still frozen told us that the yakitori "takes some time." Even if it did take some time, yakitori doesn't take an hour. We would have been fine if she had just told us the truth and said the order had been missed or the kitchen was backed up but the dishonest excuse was disappointing. 15 minutes later, the first waitress came back and let us know that the kitchen was backed up and the dish would be out in 15 minutes but at that point we were done with everything else and were ready to leave. The yakitori never made it to the table. I gave the place 2 stars instead of 1 because while the first waitress wasn't very informed on their product, she was still friendly and honest and tried to recover the situation. But the rest of the experience definitely fell short of our expectations. read more

Went into Sumo today (6-02-2012) to order 3 rolls, three pieces of sushi and a shooter. There was only one couple at the sushi bar in the entire restaurant when I arrived. I placed my order than watched TV as the order was being made. Some additional customers began to come in while I was waiting for my order to be made. It took them OVER 45 minutes to complete the order. I thought that they finally completed it, but the woman checking me out noticed that the three pieces of sushi had not been included. I sat waiting another 10 minutes while they served everyone else but me in the restaurant. Bad service, very rude older sushi chef, and by the time I left - drove back to work and opened up our to-go bags, the sushi was warm, slimy and tasted bad. I will not EVER go back to Sumo again. My total bill was $75.76 and I should have just left and canceled the transaction through my credit card company after 15 or 20 minutes. I also do not think it is safe making a portion of the order and letting it sit on the counter for an additional 30 or 40 minutes before completing the balance. Sumo Sushi has a cozy type atmosphere where it makes it easy to frequent. The rolls are good but are often a little heavy on the sauce side, however, the 50 percent sushi prices (when you order more than 5) makes up for it. The seaweed salad is not as good as you imagine and its doused in sesame. The sashimi is not as fresh as it could be but like I said the 50 percent prices do help it earn a 5 star rating. read more

Just had a terrible meal. Ordered the combo plate with salmon teriyaki and tempura. The salmon tasted about a week old. The salad was swimming in dressing. After the meal was about done I asked for my miso soup. Shouldn't have bothered as it tasted like dishwater. The bill came to about $42.00 with my wifes' sushi. I handed over my credit card and they came back with an incorrect charge of $15.99. (I should have taken it!) They came back with the corrected charge and I paid it plus tip of 15% (as a rule I usually tip at 20%. The service was ok but haphazard as there were about five different servers attending to us.) 50 bucks down the drain. Won't be back. read more

I went here with a friend for lunch by chance. We were both blown away by the food and the service. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Tempura roll with California Rolls lunch special. The crab in the California was beyond amazing, and the spicy tuna was savory. My friend got the Shrimp Tempura Roll with an avocado and cucumber roll. She let me try one of her's, and it was heavenly. Each lunch special came with a soup and salad to start with which surprised us. Both great, but my friend wanted to say that there was too much dressing on the salad (I didn't think so). The food is very tasty and for the most part service is great. Today I had a bad experience and I hope the manager from Sumo reads this. Employees need to be trained on customer service skills, it's not a generation thing, it's a "I don't care and I don't want to do my job" thing. For the most part we all have jobs and we get paid to do the job, it is hard for me to understand why people stay and make others miserable if they aren't happy with their job. Today as my two friends and I walk into Sumo one of the workers there was busy with a customer and nicely asked us to take a seat which to me meant sit wherever you'd like. Of course I take the corner table so I could have nice spread-out conversation with my friends, The table might have fit 4-5 people but it was 3 of us and we wanted to feel nice and open. Two minutes later the waitress (different lady) approaches us and asks if we are waiting for someone else, we said no, so she says can you move to this other table, this table is for more people. I let her know the lady at the front let us sit ourselves and this is where we chose to sit. The waitress asked again that we move, RUDE, I moved and didn't argue because I was hungry, I didn't want my friends to be without a meal and I was scared they would spit on my food. The place was empty and no one sat in the BIG table while we were there. it was so awkward and she was definitely not thinking of me as a long term customer. I will think twice about going there again. My advice to SUMO, teach your staff to communicate within each other and don't make your customers move around if you asked them they can chose their seat to begin with. read more

I've had sushi all around the world. Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Guam, Hawaii, everywhere in the US, and of course, Japan. What I can tell you is that nobody does sushi anywhere close to the level that Sumo does it, and that's what always has me coming back for more. It is a little pricey, but that should be expected for high end sushi grade fish they use. Great staff and the most excellent sushi that I've ever had.
