I always enjoy coming here. LOVE LOVE LOVE the lobster roll, my boyfriend has his spicy rolls (I don't do spicy very often). Really enjoy the garden salad (I need a bottle of that dressing!!!) and the Green Tea Tempura Ice Cream dessert is my favorite. Service can be slow, but I'm a patient person and I know what it is like working in the restaurant business (It's not easy!). It takes a lot to not get more than a 20% tip out of my boyfriend and I. Now that it's under new ownership, Sumo is back to being one of my favorite places to eat! The staff is always great - friendly, fast, and the food is delicious. They offer happy hour 1/2 off certain rolls, which is great. So glad I gave it another try when I heard about the new ownership. I have eaten at Sumo on occasion when working in Camarillo and the food has been consistently good. We have normally eaten at the tables and had the combinations for lunch and some sushi as well. We ate at the sushi bar today and it was quite good. The sushi chefs were quick and efficient. The sushi was presented nicely and it was fresh and tasty. I had the tuna, yellowtail and salmon sushi and they were all good and fresh. I also observed some of the rolls they made that looked well prepared and tasty. Sumo has become our choice for Japanese food and sushi. It is reasonably priced and well prepared with nice presentation. read more

I've eaten here often, several times dine-in and several take-out. Having lived in LA for 11 years and OC for 4, where there are lots of GREAT ethnic foods and excellent sushi, I'm picky about sushi. Sumo is not excellent sushi, but it's good and the prices are decent. In Ventura, I've tried Seaward Sushi, some place downtown and Sumo. I like Sumo the most by far. They updated their menu some time ago, keeping most of their best items and adding some interesting ones. Their service is always friendly and promt. Their rolls are good and their sashimi is not bad for the price. My favorites are their Snow Roll and salmon sashimi. The Crystal shrimp is overpriced for what you get. Went to Sumo last night and had a HORRIBLE experience! When we arrived we were sat promptly in a corner booth (everything seemed normal at first..) After that it took 20 plus minutes for someone (Waitress with glasses..) to ask what we would like to drink... We order our drink and also (had enough time by then,) ordered all of our food (2 rolls, 2 item combo, 2 soda's.. that's it!), drinks arrived shortly after, 2 item combo arrived about 25 minutes later. That was not a big deal... the Rolls themselves never came! After we I finished my combo plate (was trying to eat slowly and wait for my Fiance's Sushi Rolls to arrive... Also noticing a Roll that looked like ours sitting idle on the Sushi Bar Counter waiting to be garnished.. for 10 -15 minutes..) ANOTHER 25 minutes after the 2 Item plate arrived until we decided to ask a Lady (looked like an owner or the person in charge at the moment) if the Sushi was still coming... She shouted to the bar and one of the Sushi Chef guys grabbed the Roll that we figured was ours and Garnished it. I informed the Owner/Manager Lady that, that particular roll had been sitting out for 15 minutes... She walked away and never came back. At the end, NEVER received the second Roll we order... After almost an HOUR & a HALF! I asked a different passing by waitress to cancel our other Roll and if we could get our bill and get out! HORRIBLE Customer Service!! We ordered the food at the same time, we would hope that it would arrive at (or at least close to..) the same time so we can enjoy the dinning experience together!! ...ALL the way down to never offering a refill on my Sprite that I had finished in the first 10 minutes (I know, I drink too fast... but 1.5 hours NO refill offer.. I called in an order "TO GO." The girl didn't know the menu or even what "Snapper" was...though she was friendly. The scallops were dry and the eel didn't have the typical sauce on it. my favorite sushi place to go to when i'm visiting the boyfriend. i love their 50% off roll menu and the tempura green tea ice cream is heaven. drew really enjoys the vegas roll here - it this massive concoction of spicy crab and tuna thats tempura fried and then laden with sauces. i prefer their lighter offerings like the seaweed or octopus salad. they have this stuffed tofu that is awesome - totally stuffed full of tasty veggies and topped with a nice light sauce. i always make sure to get their philly roll which for some reason is just better here than anywhere else. i don't know if it's the cream cheese they use or what but i'm addicted to them. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. My family and I got there and reserved a table for 13. We were told we couldn't be seated until the entire party is here (understandable) but the tables are ready for us. We sat outside and as our party was arriving we checked in to make sure we were still good on the tables. They told us they were saving us tables. An hour after we informed them the whole party is here we were still waiting outside watching people (at least 5 or 6 parties ) going in we went in to check. We confronted her saying why tell us the table is ready and an hour after were still waiting. Her response was "it's not my fault you have a big party". Are you serious right now? Why just not say you don't accept big parties and why tell us the table is ready when it's not. They were slow when we got there but it got busy and they gave away our seats!!! They are rude and unprofessional. Sumo - There are many great sushi restaurants all over and it's not just you!!! You don't lie to hungry people!!! AND don't be unprofessional and making it OUR fault that there's a lot of us. More means more $ dumbasses! read more

I feel like I got betrayed by a friend going here. I am such a loyal customer and the food is great, but today really left a bad taste in my mouth. I went in with my family at 2:30 for lunch time and it was a slow day. We sat down and waited for the waitress to take our order for almost 30 minutes! We finally placed our order and the waitress comes back and tells us we can't order the Alaskan roll because it is now "dinner time". When she was asked about the other rolls and prices being lunch her response was very vague and alluded that it would be lunch prices. We asked if she would make an exception since we got here before dinner time and we got a LUNCH menu with the Alaskan roll on it and with lunch special prices but she refused and told us the computer did not let her make those changes to the lunch menu. So we just ordered a different roll from the same menu. Then after we were done we got our bill with DINNER prices, which are higher than the lunch prices. When asked if she could change the price to reflect the menu given to us she said she would talk with the manager. When she returned we didn't like her response and asked to speak to the manager ourselves. She goes over to the man she we speaking with previously, returns to tell us that the manager isn't there. Ate there last night, didn't think 8:30 would be considered a late arrival. We finished our first round of sushi at about 9:30. There was another couple at the sushi bar, a couple of tables in the main room were still occupied, and the sign on the front door said they closed at 10. We were contemplating ordering more when they started cleaning up and the smell of the bleach they were using to clean the floor of the sushi area forced us out the door. It smelled like a high school locker room after the janitor got thru with his work. I live in Camarillo and I know the streets roll up early, but the staff must have REALLY wanted to get out of there. The sushi was good, not great, and the pile of shaved red onion means they way overdo the presentation. The half price rolls meant we didn't spend a lot to get a decent amount of food. But customer consideration really cut into their rating. You can't swing a cat by the tail without hitting a sushi joint these days, there's a lot more in the area to try before I'll go back here. read more

The food was really fresh and the servers were nice and accommodating. However, they have this stupid rule of "Only 3 cards processed at every table." If you have 4 people eating then it creates a problem when no one carries cash! In this day of technology split payments should not be a problem! Why make your customers have to do math gymnastics after such good food. Really?!?! Get a better system or charge your customers a little higher to capture any costs on your POS operations. read more

ummm.....looking at my recent reviews, it seems that either there is a lot of bad food around or I am too picky! I recently moved from Oxnard (where I think Anaba is the bee's knees when it comes to sushi) to Camarillo. Since I am trying to get acquainted with the local dining establishments, today was Sumo Sushi day. First of all, the place has no atmosphere. It looks like an old diner, it looks unkempt and just has a dirty feel to it. The parking lot makes the place look abandoned, and I should have gotten a clue from the few cars that were parked there. I agree with previous diners about the smell - I actually had to wash my hands with some strong soap to get the fishy smell off. The menu says 50% off sushi, but the portions are so small that the prices are really just about right. The yellowtail wasn't bad, and I had a salmon skin hand roll that was very tasty (although it had more salmon than skin). I had a "Rose Roll" with tempura shrimp, "spicy" tuna and avocado, and it was just awful. The rice was mushy, and the seaweed holding the roll together did not meet at the ends, so the roll slices just opened up and spilled the contents all over the plate. The roll was very bland. The sushi chef was not really interested in making friends, he was busy making sushi for the people dining at tables and never cracked a smile. The waitress was very friendly and quick. Overall, I wouldn't go back because the quality of the sushi just isn't up to par, and the atmosphere (or absence of one) doesn't make it worth a second trip. read more

This was easily a five star restaurant for me. Excellent sushi for great price. Problem is there service has become unbearably slow and I'll probably never go back after being a 4 year customer. The last 3 times I have gone only once did we get the food which took about an hour to get. The other 2 times they just started after an hour and I just left hungry. I come here for business all the time. Perfect enclosed room that can sit like 40 people for a meeting or party. The lunch special is not expensive. Miso soup, salad, Cali roll and spicy chicken less than 10 bucks. My friends get specialty rolls but I haven't tried them. Very sweet staff. Love coming back a couple times a month. I usually venture to kabuki in oxnard but I decided to give sumo a try. When I arrived we were sat at the sushi bar. We were give drinks and not acknowledge thereafter. We were never checked on, never given refills, and then the server tried to charge us for a soda water. Note that it does not state anywhere on the menu there is a charge for soda water. There is not even a button in the system to charge for one. The server charged me for a sprite. I am a restaurant manager and know the expectations of operating a restaurant. Claudio the manager came and informed me that they do charge for soda water, when I spoke to him and informed him of our service he made it apparent that he did not care and stated "he will let her know." Obviously customer service is not the goal here. Only come here if you want cheap food because your drink will never be refilled and you won't receive great service. Went with 4 people at 11am and all of us got food poisoning I'm pretty sure it was old tuna that they had. Called the manager and he didn't give us a refund he told me to call his insurance.
