Found this on Yelp and decided to give it a try. We were craving Sushi and this place popped up as nearby. When we arrived we noticed a Yelp sticker on the door and thought that this place is gonna be great! We walked in and was greeted by a very polite young girl and seated right away. There was hardly anyone in the place but it was an early Sunday afternoon. The place had a neat little feel to it. Dividers hanging from the ceiling provided some romantic little privacy too the tables. We were seated near the fish tank where this big ole fish was taunting me! We ordered 3 rolls. A Pink Lady, Spicy Tuna and something with advacado and jalepeno. Sorry, cant remember the name. They came out pretty quickly as i finished my first Asahi beer (love those things)! The presentation was awesome! I loved the way they took pride in the way their product looked. The Pink Lady was shaped in a neat little flower shape. Ok, now the taste... Well, it wasnt bad, at all, but it wasnt stupendous. It was actually pretty average. The spicy tuna was excellent but i cant honestly say it was the best ive had. Dont get me wrong, this will be one of our favorites to go because like ive said before, i like the "whole" experience of a place. Nice little place near alot of other shops and restaurants. Had the Shrimp hibachi and it was just ok for me. Shrimps were not as big as other Japanese restaurants and it was overcooked. For some that would be okay but its too rubbery for my liking. read more

The quality went down as sumo sushi became more popular. They used to have higher quality fish. They now use lesser quality fish, and less fish, but add fried crunch and lots of sauce to the rolls. I'd prefer quality fish so now I go elsewhere. The honey roll was the only decent thing left on the menu. read more

Sushi cafe is my go to place but my family and I decided to try a new place. We first ordered the tempura appetizer which was good. Then it all went downhill from there. The calamari appetizer was embarrassing, it was overcooked and looked like onion rings. I should have taken pictures. We placed several sushi roll orders, it was average at best. I ordered the lobster roll that ended up giving me the tempura shrimp roll. I'm not sure how they got it wrong since you fill out a sheet. The sashimi wasn't fresh tasting, not sure where they get their fish.The chicken fried rice was terrible, as soon they put it on the table, looked like it was frozen for several days then reheated, the rice was mushy like Risotto and no vegetables. It reminded me of the Chinese fried rice they sell in the freezer aisle at the grocery store. We complained about it, "she said, you ordered it, you pay" "no waste here". I've tried sushi cafes all over Jacksonville, but in my opinion, Sumo Sushi is the best in the city. The food is always fresh, and their special rolls are innovative and delicious. (Do yourself a huge favor and order either the Funky Monkey Roll, the Rainbow Roll, or the Fuji Mountain Roll the next time you're there...just be prepared to get seriously addicted!) The staff are AMAZING and always go the extra mile in both friendliness and presentation. We came here last night for the first time with friends who just moved to the area. It's a cute, quaint place with plenty of parking (street/lot next to building) on a Wednesday night. It didn't get five stars from us for price reasons (my husband probably wouldn't have even given them 4, but I wasn't completely let down). We frequent a place that we feel is higher priced already but the quality matches it. Each place is different, but we hold our sushi to a higher standard. Definitely a good place to order simple rolls/apps from, but maybe not your go-to for a sashimi plate. read more

Went here for lunch today. I didn't get a very clean feeling at the sushi bar. I'm not sure if the lunch portions are any different, which they shouldn't, but I didn't see much fish in my rolls. Avocado was close to rotten and what fish I did have, was warm. I chose this place based on the previous recommendations.
