We wanted sushi on our normal date night, despite the gloom of the virus. However three closer places were either closed or had non-functional web sites (without explanation. Phone calls to those places were intercepted by the provider, until we tried Sumo in Pennington, whose web site magically worked. An hour to scheduled pickup and then a another wait before it was ready on an obviously busy Friday night. We ordered a couple of Miso soups, got a quart. We ordered a sashimi appetizer that melted in our mouths before we knew it was gone. Meanwhile we were ecstatic with our rainbow roll and Nagoya roll. Food is great but service is very disorganized. First they sat us somewhere but had to move us. Then, even though we made a reservation for 3 for the Teppantaki, we had to wait 40 minutes before they started to cook our food because they waited until the people who came after us ordered & ate their appetizers. They gave us edamame on the house but still did not make up for the fact that we waited so long to eat, plus I got hangry so it was not a good situation. Worth it if you are willing to get past the disorganized service but do not come on too much of an empty stomach or else you will get hangry too. But overall amazing food. read more

Sumo is really good, don't believe the negative reviews from uppity/picky people in here. Hard to give them 5 stars, but they are a really, really solid restaurant. Our family eats here all the time and we love it. The sushi is always fresh and fantastic. They make a really good red curry too, and the veggie lo-mein is as good as you will find at any asian restaurant. My kids love the pineapple rice too. We've been dining here on and off for over ten years and have noticed a decline in the quality of their food. The so-called Vietnamese spring roll was a bit disappointment - very heavy dough with a flavorless substance inside that defied description (I have no idea what it was). Its sauce had no flavor either. The Tom Yam soup, once our favorite, now lacks the rich sauce it once had, and there was less seafood than before. Now, for the pièce de résistance, (ugh) the soy glazed sesame chicken. This looked like chicken tenders that they'd defrosted and cooked without even cutting them into pieces. No wonder! I had a really hard time cutting them up with my knife, they were so tough. Chicken tenders? Really? Sorry, but I think we are done with this place. read more

Underrated sushi in the area... unfortunately the menu is too diverse and hides the best items. Fan of their spicy rolls, creamy coconut curry katsu and chicken katsu juu (w egg n onion over rice). Have been here many times food is not as good as it used to be the place is clean the staff always seems annoyed with you or in a rush. Chicken dishes were stringy and tough my daughter refused to eat it. Took my girl friends for the teppanyaki but to get a reservation was a night mare not because it was busy but the number I called said to call another number but the other number never picked up. Food was good though but they have no customer interaction or fun like a hibachi place. We also called for a take out and for a good 15 minutes the lady could not get the order right! I am a huge fan of this place not for their Sushi but their Curry Chicken Fried Rice. It is very tasty and their portion is also huge. I have also had their Bento box at times and can't complain. Overall a nice little place to stop by for food! read more

I ordered green curry here and that turned out to be a bad bad decision. It was served in a plate with chunks of badly prepared tofu and uncut broccolli and suace which was a poor guess at the green curry sauce. Please learn how to prepare it well if you are going to have it on your menu else remove it. It was obvious that corners were cut with the ingredients. Also when you say green tea in an Asian restuarant we expect green tea. Not luke warm water and a tea bag. I had a decent take out experience previously but this was a real downer. Really enjoy the food here. The sushi is very fresh & all of the rolls I've tried are delicious. The only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star is that there isn't a roll special on the lunch menu. On the other hand it keeps me from being stagnant in my orders. A couple of weeks ago my company decided to have our annual staff holiday party at Sumo Sushi. We began our feast with a round of wonderful sushi followed by salad. Then our chef started cooking on the hibachi. We had shrimp, chicken, beef, fried rice with egg. The kicker was when the chef put popcorn kernels and sugar on the hibachi and made caramel corn for dessert. I had such high hopes after reading reviews of Sumo. I came here with some colleagues for a business meeting. First off, the miso soup was cold....COLD! When we said something, the waitress just shrugged. Also, the seaweed in the soup tasted fishy. I have NEVER had miso soup that tasted fishy. *dry heave* Okay, let's move on to the appetizer. Not very appetizing. We ordered the Sumo sampler. Do not order this unless you like mystery pieces that are caked with greasy tempura batter. Don't get me wrong, I like a little tempura, but really guys.... I wasn't sure what was being served, since the menu didn't explain just what was in the sampler. I think that the piece I took surely had to be part of a napkin that was deep-fried. Everyone was afraid to take any more pieces after that. Now the sushi....surely this has to be good, since it is in the name. Oh the humanity.... My rolls sounded so good in the descriptions. The fish was room temperature and mushy. I'm guessing that , since it was Monday, these must have been the leftovers from the weekend. I took a few bites and threw out the rest. I didn't want to risk havng any gastric distress. At least I didn't waste any money. After all, the vendors we met with picked up the bill. Please....someone tell me where to get good sushi in Pennington! read more

The first and second time we went in the past month the food was good. The service was excellent the first time but yesterday not so much - that is the reason for only 3 starts. The waiter seemed to want us to leave right away (but it was late lunch time and many tables were empty and we only stayed for 45 minutes so that was odd). He came back to our table once we ate our hors d'oeuvre and our shared 2 person fish soup and asked want we would order next. It was strange request and we let him know that was it for us and then he demanded the menus back. His behavior was very odd. Incredible meal with the whole family. Staff was wonderful, we did the Teppanyaki and everyone was pleased with their meals. The scallops were huge, plump, and perfectly cooked. My son (8) had the chicken and devoured every bite. My daughter (11) and husband both had steak and it was tender with a great flavor! Meals all came with both rice and yakisoba noodles plus a choice of soup or salad. Pleasant treat of fresh kettle corn to finish the meal. AND both of my kids were treated to a free scoop of ice cream on the way out. Great experience, highly recommended! read more

It can be a little pricey to feed the whole family here for dinner, but it is a perfect place to go for lunch. Their rolls are very good; the dancing dragon is my new favorite. During the lunch hour, it can get pretty crowded, so I recommend going around 11:30 or ordering take-out. read more

VERY DISAPPOINTED! White Tuna you couldn't even bite into. Sting. Horrible cut of fish. Chef should have known that. Yellowtail had no flavor. Should be buttery and delicious! This was bland. I'm shocked that this restaurant has a 3 star rating on Yelp. It is, by far, the best and freshest sushi in the area and I've been to them all! I also lived in Cali for some time so I have a lot of quality sushi to compare this to (just sayin'!). In addition to eating in numerous times over the years, I've also ordered take out which can be tricky with sushi but they nail it every time. To start, their rolls are actually large. Most sushi restaurants continue to get more and more skimpy with their rolls but Sumo, gratefully, hasn't followed the trend. I like that their spicy rolls actually have large chunks of fish versus the mush that most places now use. (Mush=fish diced so small its literally mush in your mouth+crunch used as filler. Gross.) Not to mention, they don't use annoying fillers like "crunch" unless requested. They also use the perfect amount of rice. Their special rolls are amazing as well. I love the Black Ninga, Fancy Salmon and Scorpion Roll. I've never had an issue with their service and although the atmosphere isn't super appealing, its always spotless inside. Recently, out of convenience, I've given other local sushi restaurants additional chances but never again. I'll drive the extra 7 minutes to get to my beloved Sumo....NO comparison. read more

Worst service of all time. Dropped my water glass during the meal and waiter threw the towel at me and told me that I was "wasting his time" and that he had other customers to attend to. I attempted to try cleaning it up before he came back, grabbed the towel from me, and cleaned it up himself angrily. We tried it on a whim with a Groupon and ended up paying much more than bargained for, were even chased out into the parking lot when the waiter felt that we should have left more of a tip. Had a work dinner here recently and enjoyed it, but only because I wasn't paying. Bad variety and prices for the sushi dinners (soup/salad, sushi, roll): $25 and up. Few of the rolls are less than $12. Everything we had was very, very good, though. The booths are really uncomfortable: the table is too far away, the seats are solid wood, and the benches are too long for two people but too short for three people, so the spacing is weird. One star is generous. An Asian friend and I went to dinner there last Friday at 9:15 pm. In retrospect, the staff was not happy to see us. I believe they all wanted to close up the kitchen and go home early. This, even though the stated business hours are until 10 PM. I ordered red curry tofu and my friend ordered pad Thai. Both dishes were terrible. My friends pad Thai had the wrong noodles. Not the thin noodles but rather the chow fun type noodles. That wasn't even the worst of it. Very unpleasant tasting. My red curry was very disappointing as well. When we tried to discuss this with the manager, we were told they were not prepared to do anything for us because they wanted to go home. Wow. Is this America? I couldn't believe it. 40 bucks for a totally inferior meal. Absolutely deplorable customer service. Which is to say, no customer service. Price is high. Ordered a large take-out order and tried a little of everything. Not good! There were no redeeming qualities. The crispy wings were not crispy at all and slathered in a sweet sauce, the same sauce that was on the sesame tofu. The salt and pepper prawns were bland battered shrimp that were soggy and had no taste. The pork belly dish which we ordered with no spice/heat had red pepper flakes and was spicy. The sushi didn't look good or taste good, it was not fresh and though we ordered several rolls, none of our guests would eat any after trying one bite and all agreeing it was bad. We had several other dishes and none were tasty. We were very disappointed and will not be eating here again. read more
