I recently purchased a house and inherited an older pool with a fairly complex system that I wasn't familiar with. I have been in the house for a year and have been troubleshooting certain issues and trying to better understand how the filter, pump, solar heating, salt cell, etc. work. I finally decided to give an expert a call to help troubleshoot and teach me how to use the system properly. I called Hal and he was able to come out to inspect the pool the same day. Hal showed up EXACTLY when he said he would; he was right on time! That is greatly appreciated. Over our hour long conversation, it became obvious that Hal is extremely knowledgeable. I had done so much research and everything he said was consistent with what I've learned. He also taught me a lot I wasn't able to learn on my own research. He also showed me that what I thought was a big problem, wasn't a problem at all! Hal was able to explain to the level of detail of chemical reactions and pressure/vacuum dynamics. You can tell he takes pride in his work! I have to say it again - Hal is incredibly knowledgeable!! Another important note is that during our conversation, there were plenty of times Hal could have tried to upsell/sell me on service or products. Not ONCE did he try to sell me on anything. In fact, he explained to me that certain things were NOT needed and saved me money. Needed the jet pump motors replaced and found Hal on Yelp. I texted him and he texted back right away that he could come out the next day. He came out on time and was able to replace the motor quickly at a reasonable price. He also pointed out that my infritation motor may be going out soon and showed me the sound it was making so wanted to give me a heads up to keep an eye on that. Fantastic repair service, extremely honest, gives lots of free advice and prices on repairs are great!! He changed our system to salt water, did acid wash of pool to remove staining, replaced our filter with diatomaceous earth, changed out our drain covers, refilled pool and balanced all chemicals, did all this in one day and charged only $3300. My pool had turned into a green swamp that my pool service was unable to diagnose/treat. I called Hal based on his reviews here. He did a total cleaning of my pool including changing out the water(I didn't know it should be done every 5 years) and cleaning the filter. Turning the system on blew the connection at the solar and it looked like a waterfall off my roof. Hal looked over my system and found that the one way flow valves needed to be changed. I used Sun and Fun for a pool heater replacement. I purchased mine from another site and called Hal to get an estimate. Hal was very responsive in my request and came out to my home the following day. He was very prepared with all the material needed to replace my heater. I purchased a different model and company, so all the plumbing, gas and electrical needed to be replaced. Hal did such a good job and was such a joy to have around, I am almost looking forward to my pool breaking. If every business were as professional, knowledgeable, and reasonably priced, Yelp wouldn't exist. I have tried to maintain my pool myself. I have changed the motor, changed actuators, repaired solar panels, and cleaned out filters. From here on out, I am calling Hal. He does it well. He is responsive and clear in his communications. He is flexible and punctual. My fear was that I had a leak in the hot tub, spurring the call. The only leak was in my logic as it turned out to be a nearby hose spigot. With the leak and my solar panels, Hal put my best interests in front of his potential profits and gave me the straight scoop. I could not be happier with the work done by Hal and his crew. Called Sun and Fun cold and hoped for the best. I was afraid that there was a serious problem as there was so much air getting into the system the pump kept priming it's self. Hal came just when he said he would. He figured out the problem right away. He showed me the valve that needed replacing, gave me a very reasonable price and had it done in no time. I would highly recommend Hal for any pool equipment needs. I was planning on using a different company to buy and install a heater, but they kept pushing back the installation date on me. I found Hal on yelp and called him on a Thursday afternoon. He was able to do the install on Saturday, with a higher quality heater, by himself (no extra charge for extra man), and he saved me about $600. We bought a new heater for our pool and had trouble finding an installer that would do it without having purchased through them, insisted we return what we bought, or was priced higher than we expected. Came to look up Hal's number and found it odd that he only has 2 reviews on Yelp. He has over 74 reviews (including 2 from me) with a 97% average A rating on Angieslist.com. Thought I'd share my latest review of Hal with my fellow yelpers. I've used Hal 2x over the last several years my complaint is that he doesn't do weekly pool service in our area. But I'm completely grateful that he at least does repair work in our area. Both times we've used him he has been completely honest and gone above and beyond with his service. Even taking the time to educate us so we can do some of the repairs and future work ourselves. After having our local pool service guys out to help reopen our pool they found numerous things wrong with our pool equipment. It seems that every time they come out there are many many things wrong all of which require expensive replacement parts. This time they said our lines needed to be "blown out" for $150 and when that didn't "fix" the problem they said our actuator and heater were bad estimated replacement cost $3,000. Since all the equipment had been working fine when I used it a week before their recommendations didn't make any sense. After checking them myself and not finding anything wrong we called Hal- his 2nd time out here. And honestly he should have been my 1st call but I tried to support our local service. Hal troubleshot the system over the phone for free. But we still opted to have him come for an on-site inspection just to verify what we suspected - that our pool service had missdiagnosed the problem either by accident or.... He fixed what our pool service had screwed up- removing an actuator that was working fine, re-installing a one way valve that the pool guys had installed backwards (this was installed correctly BEFORE they came out), and verifying that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the heater. All the pool needed was to have the DE filter recharged (box of DE powder $20 at home depot) which I had mentioned to the pool service before they came out the 1st time. So our repair estimate went from $3,000 plus the $150 to blow out the line which wasn't need to $20. As before Hal was honest and very fair in his pricing. He even came out on a weekend when he was expecting out of town company. His bill included the service call which he applied to the work he did- cleaning our de filter, troubleshooting some minor leaks we had, correcting the one way valve the other guys had evidently removed and replaced backwards, and re-installing the "broken" actuator. Thanks again Hal. You will definitely be our 1st and only call the next time we have any pool issues again. I just wish you would provide pool service in our area. But we are grateful that you do provide repair work in our area. read more
