Just tried this place out for the first time yesterday and I was very happy with it. They've got a fairly extensive menu with a lot of different food choices and the prices are hard to beat. They've got beautiful looking sushi and specialize in making sweet black rice apparently although I didn't try any this time around. I got a basic chicken pad Thai to try it out and was very happy with the meal. They really packed a lot into one to go container and I've got dinner for another night for sure! The location isn't the best neighborhood but their location immediately off the 190 is hard to beat for driving convenience. We were told that this small restaurant apparently has the best Pad Thai in Buffalo! So we had high expectations about this Pad Thai. So is it the best? Impossible to say because once we saw the menu and downed a flight of saki, we decided to try something different! The mix of Thai, Burmese and Asian Fusion dishes they offer is staggering, and the smells are heavenly. More than the saki, I think this is more likely why we deviated from our original plan to go for the Pad Thai. Food Summary: Soft Shell Crab - battered and fried over bed of mango cabbage. Great appetizer --- very flavorful particularly the dipping sauce. Beef Curry (Amare Thar Hin) - Rice dish of Burmese curry mixed with star anise, beef, ginger, garlic, onion and chili. Taste was nice and spicy, refined with lots of layers of flavor. The beef for this dish is listed as "tender lean beef ribeye". We didn't particularly like the beef chunks because we found them to be hard and chewy... certainly not our expectation of ribeye. We enjoyed the flavors of the dish, but not the beef itself. Seafood in Claypot - Asian fusion dish with shrimp, squid, and scallops with bean noodles. This was like a an Asian spicy soup bowl of Zuppa di Pesce Fra Diavolo. Excellent --- they even surprised by adding in a few mussels. Would order this every day of the week We simply love Thai food, but both had to deviate and delve into the Burmese and Asian Fusion selections. Yet another Buffalo gem!! I finally made my way here. I have been to their location in Expo and have had their food at various events, but never been to the actual restaurant. We went on lunch the one day. This is a perfect lunch place! It was quiet and peaceful in there, really very enjoyable. We ordered one California roll and one mango roll. They both are great! The black rice is a super unique aspect too. The sushi is all fresh and hand rolled. They served us soup (it was included with lunch). The soup was called tom yum soup. It was a little spicy, but super flavorful. I wasn't sure if I would really like it, but it really hit the spot! A great soup if you are feeling a little under the weather. I am really glad we got that soup. We also ordered fried spring rolls, which again are just phenomenal. Homemade is always a million times better. The dipping sauces they give you are perfect too. The service was great. They were out to please and were very friend and genuine. I recommend that everyone comes here, whether dinner or lunch. Me and my boyfriend came here to get lunch on our way back to Pittsburgh from Niagara Falls. The rating is great on yelp so we thought we'd give it a try. The food was delicious, we got their Burmese food, I don't remember what my boyfriend got. I ordered the Burmese flat wide noodles with chicken. It was soooo good!! I finished the plate probably within five minutes. I wish we would of ordered their black rice sushi just because I've never seen it anywhere. I love black rice and it sounds delicious, but at the time we were craving for noodles. The service was very good, the waitress refilled our water very quickly. Since we were about to go on a road trip, the waitress refilled our water bottle for us with iced cold water. The price is very reasonable as well, it's worth the quality of food you get. Normally you can get Burmese and Thai food for cheap in Pittsburgh, but the whole atmosphere this place gives you and the quality of food make everything worth it. The service here is terrible. We came here a few months ago and waited forever to get water and to order. I know that restaurants are shorthanded so we stayed and eventually got drinks and food. Decided to try again today and ended up with the same experience. We were seated immediately but after 15 minutes we still hadn't received water or had a server come to the table so we got up and left. Ah, the delightful Sun Cuisine! The first time I dined here was years ago before they had the Williamsville location. I went with a group of 6 total people and have to say it was a pleasant experience. The decor is nice, with the lights dim and the open large restaurant. It's fun to be able to see the chefs as you walk into the restaurant (more parking in the back guys!) We sat down and placed our orders, I do have to say that they were pretty busy - even for a Wednesday night. The appetizers themselves took a while to come out. Of course, I tried the fresh rolls (b/c I love rice paper and pretending to be healthy while at an Asian restaurant). And my friends got the black rice sushi. The black rice sushi was very tasty today, I have had it once before and the quality was not the same as it was today. Sun Cuisines is the Burmese restaurant of Buffalo. There is quite a bit of overlap of flavors between Burmese and Thai food, with Burmese spices being more forgiving than Thai Spices. I came in with some friends for dinner and were promptly seated (unusual because it is normally packed. They occasionally update their decor so the interior always looks new and fresh. We ordered the pumpkin stew (which is actually served in the gourd), mango chicken, pad kee mao, and the family combo (black rice sushi). Our food came out at the same time and hot (except for the sushi). We were pleased with all the food but will probably pass on the mango chicken the next time we're here. It was good but not very "unique" and tasted more like a sweet n sour chicken than actual mango flavor. Otherwise the night was quite enjoyable. Note: If your party will be more than 4 people, call ahead for reservations. They're typically very packed. Ever been to Burma? Me neither. Ever meet a Burmese person? Neither have I. Have you ever had Burmese food? Nope! Needless to say, my visit here not only gave me the opportunity to satisfy my curiosity of a new restaurant in the city, it also allowed me to gain a cultural understanding of a region that I was only vaguely familiar with. Sun Restaurant is the small, local, family run restaurant that is located in the Black Rock section of the city. It is basically a converted home and once you walk inside, the transformation into a upscale basic restaurant with splashes of Burmese cultural elements comes into focus. While the restaurant focuses on Burmese cuisine, they also offer Thai dishes as well as some Asian fusion specialties. The menu provides the advertisement of being 100% MSG free, which I was glad about. Additionally, Sun is known for the usage of black rice, which is described on their website as a "rare and nutritious grain that offers many of the same health benefits found in blueberries, grapes, and acai". The service is very good. The staff is generally very accommodating and really try to be hospitable to guests. Just a quick note, I tried to send a dish back twice without success. I'm generally not an aggressive customer so I eventually left the issue alone. Now, I think for many if not most of the servers there, English may be their secondary language, which I took into account. That said, if a customer doesn't like a dish, for whatever reason, just take it back. Besides, outside of some dishes not working for certain folks, it's also entirely possible that a few dishes just may not be very good. It may also be that sometimes the kitchen messes up. Regardless, I hope they take note and just take a dish back in the future. I tried the Thai Iced Coffee, Black Rice Salad, Sweet Potato Roll, Bulgogi Beef Sun Roll and the Lobster Sun Roll. The Thai Iced Coffee was very good. The portion size was pretty decent, which is always a plus for me. I think the best way to describe the drink is a milky version of sweet tea. The taste of coffee comes out, but it's balanced pretty well with the other flavors. The Black Rice Salad consisted of avocado, mango, red pepper, spring mix, cashews, peanuts, diced chili pepper and homemade dressing. This was absolutely an excellent salad. The black rice has a nutty and somewhat crunchy quality, which is actually kind of addicting. All of the other elements mixed well with each other creating a symphony of different flavors and textures, all working harmoniously. One thing though, regardless of whether you're into spicy food or not, the diced chili pepper is NO JOKE. It's easily removable for customers' convenience since it's placed in a pepper that was shaped into flower, as opposed to being mixed in the salad. The Sweet Potato Roll is comprised of crispy sweet potato, sesame seed and milky way sauce. Talk about creativity. There was a lot going on - nutty, creamy, crunchy, sweet and tangy. Everything piled into one bite sized piece of deliciousness. For a roll that's pretty standard at most sushi places, Sun elevated it to the next level. The only fail of the evening was the Bulgogi Beef Sun Roll. It consists of avocado, mango and sweet potato wrapped in Korean bulgogi beef. The dish came with a red sauce, a red paste and large pieces of lettuce. The problems were that the roll was largely flavorless, the beef was very dry and just seemed off, perhaps due to not being fresh. The waitress mentioned that traditionally all the components are meant to be constructed and eaten together, like a lettuce wrap. I did that and yes, the flavor was a little better. Still though, it was not very good, still bland and something about the bulgogi beef still seemed off. You can put a put a tuxedo on a pig, but guess what? It's still a pig. The Lobster Sun Roll is a cooked roll that is made up of crab salad with sweet chili sauce, along with a whole lobster tail that chopped up and placed on top. Definitely a hearty roll. It skews a bit on the tangy side, but works very well with a little soy sauce along with the sweet chili. The lobster is not only a great addition, but adds a certain richness. As far as price goes, I was happy to pay the close to $70 bill for a great experience. That said, for Buffalo, and even more specifically the Black Rock area, it is a little overpriced. At least Sun provides quality dishes. I will definitely be back at some point, perhaps even on my next trip home. I think Sun is definitely some place my parents may like, which is important to me since trying to eat out with them can feel like an exercise in futility. Look forward to returning! read more

We visited this place during a day trip to Buffalo, and we're glad we discovered this on Yelp! Since visiting Burma Superstar in San Francisco, I've been on the hunt for an equally delicious Burmese food experience. While Sun Cuisines doesn't top that, it comes close. Definitely a solid choice for a tasty and interesting meal. First, parking. There's a parking lot connected to the restaurant, so you won't have to worry about paying for parking or leaving your car too far away from the restaurant. Second, the atmosphere. It's nice inside! White tablecloths, interesting art, very clean - modern yet showcasing Burmese culture in a very tasteful and interesting way. There's also a decent amount of seating. Good for dates, families, small groups. Third, the food. This place doesn't only have Burmese food, they have Thai, and sushi as well. When we were there, they had a Buy 1, Get 1 Free special on their sushi rolls, so we ordered: a) the Seared Beef and Mango Rolls (good size, and didn't scrimp on the meat!), along with b) a Burmese Tea Leaf Salad and c) Burmese Beef Curry. I was a bit disappointed with the Tea Leaf Salad - it was too bitter for me, although it had great textures (others I've had elsewhere were a bit sweeter). The sushi and the Burmese Beef Curry were delicious - fresh, tasty, lots of different flavours that melded together so well. Very well done! Lastly, make reservations. Even on a late Saturday afternoon, the place was half full. It looks like a popular spot, so make sure you save yourself a table. For two people, with tax, and tip, we paid around $38.00. read more

Amateurs do one of two things, they either order too much or order too little. I will be up front right away and admit, yes, I ordered way too much food for one, but finding the time to actually make it to Sun for dinner brought so much excitement out of me that I just over did it. It was like a field day looking over the take out menu, I wanted one of everything. I am paying for it now as I sit on my couch only able to move my fingers to type this well deserved 5 star review. To say Sun's menu is extensive is the understatement of the century. They have something here for everyone. Chicken, fish, veggie dishes, you name it. Lots of their items are gluten free which nowadays is good for all those, "Gluten Free People." I am not one of them, so I had an even more difficult time picking out what to get. I went with the Grand Avocado Roll, Seared Tuna Roll AND, (I know, like, have some willpower Samantha) the Black Rice Salad. I wasn't paying attention to prices so I was going to base the price on whether or not I was ordering too much food for myself. The total came to $25 so I KNEW I was going to have to pretend like I was ordering for two when I went to pick up the meal. When I arrived, I noticed an entrance on the side where the parking lot is and went on in. There were four smiling faces greeting me at the front stand. There was only one take out order placed so they knew it was mine. My order was ready when I got there. There were four other tables eating around 8:30, Monday night when I came in. It seemed like a place I would definitely dine in when I had time and friends to accompany me. After paying and taking my food, a gentleman was by the door and told me to have a great night. Excellent customer service from what I was able to observe in those short few minutes. When I got to my apartment, I had to unload the car with my other 79 bags from holiday shopping. I grabbed the food, forgetting it was food and swung it around completely forgetting that it probably wasn't the best idea to do that with food. I immediately thought to myself that the second I get inside the food is probably all over the place inside of this bag! To my surprise, I opened up the stapled paper bag it was in and everything was intact. COOL! They gave some pretty heavy duty plastic containers for each dish. I am a big fan when restaurants do this. Not only does it protect the food from getting thrown about when people like me swing it around like a jump rope, but the containers can also be reused in the future. The Black Rice Salad was primarily black rice and three pieces of lettuce. I had hoped for more lettuce because the black rice REALLY filled me up big time although it was SO delicious. Salty, but not TOO salty for my palate, which can only handle minimal salt. The flavor was absolutely delicious, chunks of avocado, mango and red pepper, delicious cashews that brought the perfect crunch and flavor to the dish. The Grand Avocado was, well, grand, huge, massive, ginormous, overwhelming, filling, you name it. That was all I needed to order and I would have been more than satisfied. There was mango, sweet potato, cilantro and cucumber with avocado rolled on the outside. So delicious. Then, yeah, more, ugh, I had the seared tuna roll. It was delicious and mild. Black rice on the outside, yes I asked for brown originally and was told, only black rice, like I said....amateur. I love black rice by the way, totally different, total super food, YUM. This has been a restaurant that I've been meaning to try, (I love Asian Food). I first tried their Sun Roll at the Taste of Buffalo 2 Years ago, I didn't like it that much (The rice was offputting and the Salmon inside was dry like Cat Food. I would think that I should go to the Restaurant in the Future. My friend Chris told me about it and Nelson Starr Advertised it on Youtube. After having Friday off from Work, having Lunch at Panera Bread and Seeing Finding Dory with my Grandma then to work up an appetite I went Kayaking at Canalside with my Dad we came here. We talked to the Owner for a few minutes and then he sat us at our Table, For drinks Dad had 2 Labatt Blue Beers and I had a Thai Iced Tea (the appearance was like an Iced Coffee and it was sweet like Dulce de Leche). I ordered 2 Appetizers, 1st was a Sushi Appetizer (6 Pieces) I got Beef Tataki, Surf Clam, Eel, Scallop, Avocado and Yellowtail (The Black Rice was better than the last time, Beef was topped with Fried Wontons or Onions for some Crunch Beef was Tender not chewy at all, Surf Clam and Scallop were Melt in your Mouth Tender, the Eel was topped with some Sesame Seed and the grilling gave it a nice smokiness, The Avocado was soft and creamy topped with bits of Red Pepper and a Spicy Mayo and the Yellowtail had firm Texture topped with Thai Basil and Lime Juice). My 2nd Appetizer didn't come out until later, so anyway Dad ordered us a Sake Trio: HAIKU - Premium Select, Kobai Plum and & Black & Gold (the Kobai Plum was my absolute favorite, sweet like those Star Anise cookies you have at Christmas Time, Black & Gold and the HAIKU were ok tasted a bit like Vodka, Dad liked them more than I did). For our Entrees Dad got the Burmese Fried Rice with Pork (he especially liked the mix of Black and White Rice). I got one of their Signature Dishes: Pumpkin Stew, Pumpkin Curry with Garlic Ginger, Chili and Slices of Beef served in a Green Pumpkin (I loved every bit of it, the Big Chunks of Hearty and starchy like Boiled Potatoes, Slices of Beef that are tender and Juicy, that Broth was Rich, Nutty and had a bit of Spice to it. They must be out of their Gourds to make something like this). Then surprisingly my 2nd Appetizer showed up a little Late, I had to ask for it Twice. a Salad of Shredded Papaya with Carrots, Chili, Garlic, Palm Sugar, Lime Juice, Fish Sauce & Peanuts. I considered it a Palate Cleanser (Sweetness from the Palm Sugar, Saltiness from the Fish Sauce, Acidity from the Lime Juice, a little bit of Heat from the Chili, some crunch from the Peanuts it was a refreshing bite and what a perfect way to end the Meal). My review for Sun has been a long time coming - I eat here regularly and suggest it to almost every person I know looking for affordable, quality dining. I suggest it because I know it will absolutely change their world. Kevin is, without a doubt, one of the most intuitive chef's I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know. I let him pick out the dish the very first day I dined here. So did my dining partner. We both received Burmese dishes that were mind-blowingly flavorful. I had the Mont Hin Gar, a fish noodle soup, and my partner in crime had the seafood clay pot. I can tell you this - every time I have ventured away from these two dishes, I always regret not getting one or the other. In my opinion, they are two of the best dishes - they are complex but comforting, warm and filling, and the fishy taste is not overwhelming. (In fact, if I had not known from the beginning that the Mont Hin Gar was made from fish stock, I would not have guessed it... and I love fish!) Another few dishes that I would highly recommend: the appetizer Samusa's (fried Burmese raviolis), the Som Tum (a papaya salad that is out of this world), and the Nan Gyi Thoat (think rice noodles, mild curry and a slight crispiness from flat noodles). I should also note that Kevin absolutely loves to create new dishes. While there, he sampled his new black rice appetizer that included mango, avocado and sweet potato rolled in black rice. It was a wonderful combination and I was incredibly taken aback at how creative they were. I usually do not get dessert, but opted to buy the black rice pudding to take home with me. A total hit, and it was devoured in less than five minutes after the first bite. This place has never let me down. Service is fast and friendly. The food is worth every penny. You absolutely owe it to yourself to have lunch, a date night, a lone dining experience, anything to give your taste buds an adventure with the greatness that is Sun Burmese! read more

Ah-mazing food but painfully slow service. The first time I came here, we literally waited two hours for the food to come out. Seriously, we got through about 2 bottles of wine and several sake shots before the food came out. Understandably, it's always busy here since they are one of the most authentic Asian restaurants in the area. The food is THAT good, but I'm not so sure id be willing to sacrifice that much time for it. Just be prepared to not be hangry before you arrive and all will be good. The curry chicken is so incredible... Tender, fall-off-the-bone of sorts. Their eggplant dish is just as wonderful and this is coming from a gal who doesn't eat anything without meat in it; although you can get it with meat for an extra charge. It was so good the first time I tried it, that I ordered it as my main dish the second time I came here. The eggplant skin is so crispy and flavorful, it just melts in your mouth the second you take that first bite. The black rice sushi is also a must have; I love the fragrant, grainy texture of the rice in contrast to the delicate piece of fish. The "sun pods" were also really fun to eat-- I can't really describe it so you'll have to try it yourself. But it's... fun? All in all, you can't go wrong with anything you order. Heck, my friend ordered the sesame chicken which I totally judged her for because we all know that's an Americanized dish that no one eats in Asia, but I tried it anddddd it was pretty delicious. But I beg of you, please try an actual authentic dish if you're going to come here. I promise you you won't regret it. As other reviewers have noted, Burmese cuisine is a combination of Thai, Chinese, and Indian(ish) flavors, which are really some of the best flavors ever, if you ask me. Just a word of caution to the vegetarians out there, there's fish sauce in everything, but you can just ask them not to add it. Staff is wonderful and very accommodating. The restaurant serves both Burmese food and Thai food, but I'd say come for the Burmese. The Thai dishes I've tried (pad see ew and pad thai) fell flat; still more authentic than other Thai restaurants in the area, but lacking in flavor or seasoning. Maaaaaybe it was an off day, but the Burmese food here.......oh man, so good, so flavorful...this is DEFINITELY where they shine. So far, I've tried: 1) Kat Kyay Kite: oh my god, this was like a flavor bomb in my mouth. Perfect amount of spice - not so much that it was overpowering but enough to give the dish a great kick - and just the right amount of tang. I literally couldn't stop eating, and I'm bad enough as it is when it comes to pacing... When I finished my plate I wanted more. I dreamed about those flavors for days on end. I may or may not be salivating right now just thinking about it... 2) Sun's eggplant dish: I am a huuuuuuuge eggplant fan, and Sun really knocks this dish out of the park. The sauce itself is, I think, a Chinese influenced garlic sauce, quite tasty, although not my favorite (totally a personal preference, absolutely nothing against the dish itself). Now onto the eggplant: the crispiness is rather subtle, which is what you'd expect in such a saucy dish, so if you're expecting something battered and deep fried, that's not really what you're getting. The crisp they're talking about adds a wonderful texture to each bite when you can capture it. Also, the eggplant itself maintains that vibrant purple color, which is actually quite difficult to do when cooking eggplant. I got this dish with veg and tofu, but I'm sure it's delicious with any of the offered proteins. Oftentimes, I try one thing and if I love it, that's all I'll ever get. But Sun Restaurant's Burmese dishes are just so good, I feel as though I must try every vegetarian dish available. So...that's the plan. This place just makes me happy, in a way that usually only adorable purring kittens can make me happy. I love Sun Cuisines and yet, it had been some time since my last visit. I ended up here for a late dinner last night that reminded me to never let it go that long again. We started with the Chicken Curry with Paratha as an appetizer. This was very good but would have been better for one; it wasn't really a sharable portion which was the intention. For dinner, I ordered the Spider Roll. This was incredible; best Spider Roll I have ever had. My friend ordered the Coconut Seafood Medley which I tasted and thought was very good as well. I concluded the meal with the Mango Sticky Black Rice which is always a treat. There is no way I can remember everything I've had here over time and I should have written a review sooner. But I want to add that Sun's Black Rice Salad is amazing. I always want to order that every time but I also want to try new dishes. Their menu is huge. You may want to browse it online before going. I am never decided when the server first comes to take my order - and the service is consistently great here; attentive and friendly. From the outside, this place looks very casual. The inside however, is quite nice--more of a classy casual with soft lighting and a very serene ambience. Sun restaurant definitely knows how to offer an absolute and exquisite Burmese cuisine that spoils your taste buds. I came here a couple times for dinner. First, it was during restaurant week. I didn't call ahead and I should have known this place would be crowded. Sure enough it was busy and the wait would take an hour for a table. However, my husband and I got lucky there was a spot open for two at the sushi booth. So, we got seated right away. Second, I came with a couple friends on Friday night. This time I made a reservation and I didn't have to wait. The restaurant is located on Niagara Street, Black Rock area, not far from the 190 ramp. The ambiance was welcoming and very nice. When you walk into the restaurant, the sushi bar was on the left side, and the dining area was on the right side. The food that I tried so far: Spider roll sushi - soft shell crab wrapped with black rice, topped with mango, avocado, a tad of sweet chili sauce, and spicy mayo. Everything about this sushi was goodness that melts in your mouth. The crunchiness of the soft shell crab mixed well with the mango, avocado, and a tad of wasabi. You couldn't just eat one piece. Chicken coconut noodle soup - egg noodle, slices of chicken with coconut milk and fried shallot with boiled egg. Very tasty and delightful. Perfect when eaten with their homemade chili powder. Salmon roll sushi - cooked salmon with slices of avocado and wrapped with black rice topped with fried shallot and spicy mayo - Deliciously addicting that makes you want to come back here for more. Kat Kyay Kite - stirred-fried Burmese wide noodle with (your choice of meat) beef, bean sprout, hot and sour sauce, green onion, and eggs. The noodles were cooked perfectly, it was not too greasy, and the hot and sour sauce didn't overpower the dish. Roasted Duck with sautéed vegetable with brown sauce - I really enjoyed this hearty dish. The duck was moist and flavorful, the vegetable with brown sauce tasted sweet and peppery. It tasted great with steamed rice. Overall, this place deserves five stars for the food, the ambiance, and the service. Reservation is recommended or you will have to wait for an hour. If you're in Buffalo area and would like to expand your taste buds territory, you should try this authentic Burmese cuisine. read more

This is one of those places that keep getting super duper reviews but somehow my busy schedule and thought process have kept me away from Buffalo's Burmese Restaurant. Ok, that national affiliation might cause some to pause but I am here to tell you it is time to head to BLACK ROCK! My choice of nights was a frigid Buffalo Thursday evening during Valentine's Day week. My dining partner suggested making reservations and I was like nah but reservations were made as I chuckled wondering who would be eating out on a very cold Thursday night. How wrong I was. The Sun Restaurant is a bright and warm oasis on Niagara Street with an easy to reach location from any corner of Western NY. On this dark cold night the name SUN was so fitting because from the moment I pulled into the parking lot I felt warm and happy. It was a perfect setting to enjoy a special evening of good food and conversation together. The staff are superb! The staff are welcoming! The staff care about you no matter who you are and how many layers of clothes you have on. They want you to have a dining experience! This is a well designed bistro whose Asian theme get you thinking what Far Eastern delights await. And, I noticed that we were dining on a $5.00 SEAFOOD and SAKE night! Yes, I was a happy boy even before the menu's were handed to me. Black rice ... intriguing and something I have been planning to use at home so we went for the black rice rolls to start the night (Yes, they were on the $5 menu. The roads were way too icy for either of us to consider driving with sake in the system so the rolls were the choice.). Perfection ... very pleased with what was brought to our table. As a soup guy I knew I had to try their SAMUSA soup. The waitress suggested that we might want to share a bowl and she was right ... there was a lot of delicious broth and scrumptious "Burmese fried ravioli's floating in it. A perfect choice to follow the black rice wrapper sushi. As for Burmese cuisine ... it is very similar to Thai, which also is offered on the menu at THE SUN. As I eyed the Kat Kyay Kite I was told that their "hot" was more like a Thai mild so I said bring on the hot. My friend chose the Rice Noodles with chicken curry sauce. What a delicious blend of flavors was delivered to the two of us. We put the cold dark of the night out of mind because THE SUN was shining in this dining room. To finish the night .. BLACK RICE PUDDING. Critics had praised it ... YELP reviews had loved it so bring on the pudding. YES it was delicious and the two of us really only needed half a serving but we finished it off with smiles knowing we'd both have to get in some exercise to work this great meal off. I am sure that one serving could have fed more than two hungry guys so my suggestion is SHARE THE PUDDING even if you are eating out with 3 friends. If you are a couple enjoying a special night the pudding is worth it ... if you are just friends hanging out it is worth it ... So it was a good night ... as we chatted with staff members who clearly are proud and happy to be working at THE SUN. But then it was back into the dark cold night ... two happy friends with bellies full of incredible food enjoying happy memories that will bring us back to THE SUN! Believe me ... I can't say enough good things about this place. First of all this place is really unassuming from the outside. You would barely notice it driving by. The first time I saw Sun Restaurant I couldn't help but think how it looks a lot like an average corner Asian takeout restaurant. Not the case at all. You walk inside and though it is not very big it is really nice and very clean and nicely decorated. There are booths and regular tables to sit at and lots of nice pictures adorn the walls with the perfect amount of lighting. Let's get to the food since that is the best part. You first have to start with a Thai iced tea. If you don't know what that is (I didn't before coming here) it is totally not what you expect. Thai iced tea is like some kind of creamy concoction that combines a milkshake like taste with an iced tea like taste. Its really good. Next we ordered the Sun combination platter for an appetizer to share. It includes several of their appetizers and the fried dumplings and samusas were out of this world good. When you come here you have to order something off of their black rice menu. In case you don't know the black rice menu is basically sushi rolls made with black rice. Its different and inventive and definitely worth trying. I ordered the tuna roll and it wasn't bad. It really depends on how much you're into sushi though. The star of the meal for me was my entree. Here is the thing they have a Thai menu and a Burmese menu to order from. I strongly suggest you try something from the Burmese menu since there are Thai restaurants all over and Burmese food is not as common to come across. However, with that being said I have to admit that I did sample a little bit of the Pad Thai and it was amazing! The Burmese entree I chose was the Kat Kyay Kite. It was basically a noodle dish that included bean sprouts and scallions and your choice of meat with some kind of Burmese sauce and flavors. Be warned that this dish is pretty spicy! I really liked it but I have to admit that the spiciness of the dish was a tad bit overwhelming and took a bit of focus off other great flavors of the dish. Some other things I wanted to mention were that service is really friendly and efficient here and prices are totally reasonable. The bathrooms are kept extremely clean. This place even has their own parking lot which I always say is a big plus for a restaurant located in the city. I went there for a Ladies Lunch and it was fabulous! They were very informative on the menu items & were very friendly. I reserved my reservation through there website & it worked out perfectly. We had a few ladies miss out & they were cool with the changes. The service was a tad slow but our waitress was very pregnant, so I did not care. We were not in a rush at all. The food was great, VERY fresh & I love the black rice. So cool! We highly recommend the "Avocado Roll" . So fresh & beautiful presentation! The place only has beer & wine but the girls got there "iced coffee" & they loved it. Everything was priced reasonably & the place was spotless! All in all - go there, it's awesome! ... xo read more

So glad to finally get out to Buffalo and eat at Sun! It was a great experience, and I look forward to coming back again. There were so many things that I liked, it's hard to know where to start. But let's give this a go: 1. Everyone was SO friendly. My friend Lindsay A. and I walked in and we were immediately greeted with smiles and welcomes. It was almost as if they knew us and were happy to see us! 2. Nice large booths made dining comfortable. 3. Despite being on a busy street, the window coverings do a great job of dampening the sound and sights of Niagara Street. 4. The food was EXCELLENT. Really and Truly outstanding! Let's break it down: *Thai Iced Tea - Sweet, but not too sweet, not watered down but plenty of ice to keep it cold, the color was just perfect - clearly the ratio of ingredients was perfect for my taste... and of course a good-sized portion * Lunches came with a soup (tom yum I think) and small salad. The soup was ok. It was mainly broth with tofu and a few pieces of vegetables. I wasn't expecting this, so it was fine. The salad was ok. I'm not a huge fan of corn on salads so I picked around that because I did enjoy the dressing. It wasn't spectacular, but again wasn't expecting these small starters. * Burmese Flat Wide Noodle (Kat Kyay Kite) - I was in the mood for some spice, and the menu listed it as "popular" so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I ordered the vegetarian option without tofu. I stated I didn't like tofu and was about to decide on something else, but our waitress insisted I could get this with just vegetables. Alright then! I'm typically not a fan of flat wide noodles because I think they can easily be ruined - overdone or poor presentation, but there was NONE of that here. Immediately I mentioned to Lindsay A. that the textures were great. The veggies were done well... crispy but not raw, and the vatana bean texture really added to the dish. The flavors were so good. I ordered it medium, and it had some kick to it, but not too much. And the NOODLES. They were perfect! I hate a mushy noodle - but it was perfect. The bean sprouts added substance and the scallions were light and fresh. I really really enjoyed this dish, and ate the whole thing. Honestly, aside from the company, this dish made my day. 5. The owner/chef came out and talked with us for a while. He is so proud of his food, and he loves to talk about it. I thought it was great, and I learned a few things too. He seems to have a strong sense for marketing, and he wants you to enjoy the food he makes. This is one of the few times a chef has ever come to my table in any restaurant, and I was happy for this interaction. 6. Service was very good. Food came out quickly and correctly. Our server was attentive and polite. A really good experience. 7. PRICE - Very reasonable, especially for lunch! I still had some cash left for tolls to get home! I have one somewhat negative thing to say - and in the grand scheme of things it is inconsequential. The smell of the dining area was reminiscent of a childhood friend's living room. It's not the memory I would have conjured up for lunch at a Burmese restaurant... it's not that it was bad smelling, it was just surprising for me...and It can't take away from the 5 stars I'm giving Sun! read more

Until recently I had never tried Burmese cuisine before. I'm so glad that I chose Sun for my first foray into it! Every time that I have been to Sun for dinner has been an enjoyable and delicious experience. All of the dishes and rolls have different unique and complex tastes to them. I highly recommend ordering anything from the black rice bar (the only one in Buffalo!). I especially like the black rice salad and the grand avocado roll. Every roll that I've tried has melted in my mouth and a lot of have cantaloupe, avocado, another ingredient inside the black rice roll. Yes, Sun is a little bit more on the pricey side than other Burmese restaurants in the area but I believe you get what you pay for here. I highly recommend Sun for anyone who wants to dive into some delicious Thai/Burmese cuisine. read more

It's so nice to have GOOD Asian food in Buffalo! I ordered the Kyit Thar Aloo lunch special, and I was very impressed by the spices and herbs mixed in for that Burmese party in my mouth. It was my first time trying Burmese food, but it is very similar to a fusion of Vietnamese and Thai food. I also tried some of my friend's Pad Thai, which was also excellent. The service was fast, efficient, and overall, great. My waiter was very friendly and attentive to our table. We love it here! First of all, black rice is delicious. It is nutty and mild and beautiful! It is always sticky and delightful here. We are vegan, and they have a huge selection for us. My favorite is the Garden Mango Sun Roll, it is so so so good. My friend always gets the sweet potato rolls, which are also delicious. I love the avocado rolls as well. The ginger salad is super weird, its a vinaigrette dressing and its full of these crunchy little things, its just super weird. But the mango salad, on the menu its marked as famous or whatever, is a must get. It's basically a deconstructed sushi bowl. We get it to share because it is big. I will say that the service is kind of slow and a bit...odd. The timing that they bring things is always strange. They bring everything kind of out of order. Like they bring your sushi and then your salad, or everything at once, or your appetizer last, it's just weird. I want my drinks first, because I am sitting here with nothing, then soup or salad or appetizer whenever they are ready because that is presumably the quickest to make, then sushi and/or meal. I thought that is standard but I would never request it or look picky/demanding so I just endure the strange order I must eat my food in, LOL. It takes drinks a long time to come usually. 3 to 3.5 stars for Sun. Went to Sun last week for the first time in a little while. (It's good but it's a bit off the beaten path so there is some out-of-sight-out-of-mind going on.) The service is good. They take reservations, so it's easy to get a table - even on the weekend. They have an expansive menu with lots of options. And, in my experience, the food is always good. We went last week with another couple. I got my usual pad thai shrimp, which was delicious. The flavor is spot-on and the portion is generous (solving lunch for the next day). There were only three shrimp in the dish, which I thought was a bit miserly. My husband had the General Tao's chicken, which was very flavorable but a bit sweeter than I think GTC usually is (not bad, just different). We shared some appetizers. We had dumplings, which were perfectly cooked (steamed, I'm guessing) and had just the right mix of filling to dough, along with a flavorful dipping sauce. We also had the calamari. The calamari was only so-so, but I ordered it knowing it was a risk. (Few things can compare to the Boston calamari I hold in my memory.) There were a variety of wines available by the glass and a couple people at the table got wine. Neither of the wines that we ordered were particularly good, which is always a bit disappointing. I have to remember next time not to spend the money on their wine selection and to just get pop or water. The reason why I went with a 3 to 3.5 is this... The friends we went with didn't have the best experience with their entrees. One ordered their curry dish "extra hot" and had no flavor. The other ordered their curry dish "regular" and had to gulp down water through the whole meal because it was on fire. They are a couple and would ordinarily have just switched, but it's Lent, so our one friend is avoiding meat.... She didn't mention it till partway through the meal and also said that they've notice a problem with consistency lately.
