Best deal in Oakland Chinatown if you ask me! Everyday at 3:30 pm, they lay out discounted boxes of miscellaneous food items, all of which cost only $6. I've gotten this twice now and both times the selection has been great. Some of the items I've seen include fried fish, fried chicken, roast duck, roast pork, beef tendons, pig ears, yang tofu, braised duck wings, etc. The last time I came, I tried the roast pork, roast duck, and braised beef tendons, and all three were fantastic. The duck was a tiny bit dry, but the siu yuk had crispy skin and was very flavorful, and the flavor of beef tendons was on point. The portions are generous for the price too, especially when even half a roast duck goes for $18 these days. Now that I've discovered this spot, I'll probably start grabbing boxes from here whenever I feel lazy :D read more

Excellent beef tendon and stomach. My grandpa loves the roast pork and duck. The uncle is friendly and prepares cuts very quickly.

There are dozens of shops in Chinatown that sell Roasted Duck, Soy Sauce Chicken, and bbq pork. Sun Hing is a decent spot for all those items. What sets them apart for me is the time the butcher and meats are available to have it cut up and purchased. They usually will have everything out by 8am, other places might have their meat hanging on the window already but the butcher isn't there to cut it and most of them are still selling jook for breakfast. The big plus is around 3:30 or 4pm, all the meats are cut to half price. Still early enough to take home for dinner. Probably the best deal available in Chinatown. read more

Overall so far 3/5, so rounded up to 4 from what I've eaten there so far...I've only done take out here once so far and I'll admit to it being pretty decent enough for me to try out a few more dishes from this place just to see how good they are or aren't. But, my usual go to in Chinatown had a huge line to the point I just wanted to grab and go and this was on the way to Bart. The outside window food looked inviting overall, so I opted to try just alittle chow mein. The small take out box was around $3, and when I had a chance to eat it, I thought the chow mein was quite flavorful but a tad greasy but I was sort of surprised or disappointed not to see any protein in it. So that's why I had to only give them 3 stars, it may go up if I get a chance to stop by and buy a few more items from this little hole in the wall so only time will tell. read more

We ordered a whole roast suckling pig from Sun Hing and were very pleased. We served it as part of a Vietnamese 1st birthday celebration (the desserts surrounding the pig in the picture were homemade). I ordered the pig 8 days in advance, and paid a deposit in cash. The whole pig was $240. The pig had a perfect crispy skin, and juicy meat. It was definitely on the saltier side, but I think that's fairly typical for the dish. Decided to get some BBQ pork from them and saw that they were also selling cooked food so I added an order of sweet & sour pork, this was the BIGGEST mistake I've ever made in food ordering. I took home the sweet & sour pork and bite into a piece of straight up lard, it turns out, EVERY SINGLE PIECE in my order was just lard aka fat. I have never felt so cheated by a restaurant where they sell you a box of coated fat pieces and called it pork. I would not come here ever again, I only came back because it was the only place open for roast meats, but I'd rather starve then buy a box of fat. read more

This place will forever remain one of my favorites because all the food is made fresh, the selection is diverse and the prices won't hurt your pockets. We arrived I ordered a 3 item Combination Plate. I got BBQ Pork Chow Mein , Roast Pork and Roast Duck. The Roast Pork Skin was very Crunchy and the meat very tender . The Roast Duck was very rich and flavor infused both were very freshly cooked . The BBQ Pork Chow Mein had plenty of Pork in it . all this for $5 . What a freakin bargain. The Owner was very cordial. Very tasty char siu (BBQ Pork). I asked the gentleman who works there for the darker colored one and he asked if I wanted more or less fat. I told him less fat. He chopped it up. So delicious. I could smell it all the way home to Monterey. It was probably some of the best tasting BBQ Pork that I've had in awhile. They make their own chinese sausage and fried pork skin. This place got some great food at "fast food" prices. Their lunch specials are great and you get a lot of food, but what I do is come here around 5:30PM (they start closing and leave around 6-ish) and they will sell their remaining food for dirt cheap! They'll sometimes give me a buy one get the other 1/2 price deal so one time, I was able to get a decent amount of roast duck for $2.50! But, buy only what you can finish that evening, and stay away from food with (yellow) onions as food with this spoil quickly, especially those type of food that's been kept on the warmer all day. read more

And they are open until about 5p everyday even during the Covid-19 Shelter in Place Order. First lets start off with the service, i don't expect much from Chinese joints but this place was just straight rude. I'm referring to the guy that cuts all the meats, the young Chinese guy. He looks like hes been working there since he was a young boy, very bitter facial expression. He has no manners no customer service skills. Like an animal raised by some gorillas. I bought almost $50 dollars worth of food here and he didn't even have the common courtesy to say thank you. Me and my family have been ordering whole roast pigs from here for many many years. people aren't showing their love for the roast duckss i've been hearing about. it's after 6p.m. and there's over 20 fowls hanging by their penciled necks. some may be chicken. to me, all those hanging fowls look the same to me. fair weather fans or? undeterred, i ordered 1/ 2 roast duck to go. half hour later, i'm ingesting duck and feel incrediably thirsty. the roast duck is tasty, especially the skin. a daily dose of these will speed me to triple bypass city. the meat in places are bland. it's a good tasty bird. not the best however, i worry msg may be a secret ingredient. got to ran to the .....now. update later. read more

Duck looked good, as did its price ($11.95: in Berkeley, you can't get even an uncooked duck for anywhere near that). If a duck's too much for you, there are quails for a couple of bucks. I have been living in Oakland for almost two years now. And for two years I have been searching for good Cha (or Char) Siu. It is more commonly known as Chinese BBQ Pork. Most of the Cha Siu I encountered in Chinatown was either too dry or too bland. That stuff is only good for "re-cooking" in other dishes like fried rice. Been walking by this place for years and finally decided to give them a try for lunch recently. They have a 2 Item Lunch Special for $3.99 You get 2 BBQ'd meat items with Steamed Rice for $3.99. I went with the Roast Duck and BBQ Pork. Their Roast Duck was very meaty compared to most other places I go to. And one of the most tender Ducks I have had in my life if not the most tender. Very different than what I've had at most places so they must prepare it differently. For the BBQ Pork, it was darker than most places. At many places, their BBQ Pork is bright red but this place it has that dark look to it. You have to come and try it for yourself to know exactly what I mean. It was very lean and was kinda like a smoked meat. The one thing I hate about certain places is that their BBQ Pork is full of fat. So what I would say is that this place is very different and unique with their BBQ Items. It's really small and there's not really a "Real" Dining Room so take it to go if you do come here. read more

"Best Roast Duck in Chinatown" Continuously voted tops by local Chinese newspapers, Sun Hing is a grotty little hole in the wall with gleaming and lacquered roast duck (heads attached), whole roast pigs with crackling, and slabs of red char siu (sweet glazed BBQ pork) hanging in the window. The roast duck here has skin so crisp and lite that you'll find other duck disappointingly greasy and pedestrian afterwards. The meat is tender and succulent, redolent with star anise five-spice flavor which coats the inner cavity. Ask for extra duck jus which they provide with the meat since this is an excellent source of umami (yummy goodness I could swim in). Another interesting option is the pei pa ap (plum sauce duck) which is butterflied flat and drier than the roast duck yet still tasty and succulent with plum tones. If you're brave try the house cured sausages - lap cheung (pork, duck liver, chicken) which hang in pairs on butchers twine from a hook overhead - cut into small chunks and steam with rice, delicious! On the sill lie trays of intriguing (potentially scary) spicy cooked tripe, duck's feet, red-cooked pork belly, soy sauce glazed squabs. Best Peking duck ever. My mom, who lives in the Central Valley, will ask me to pick up some Peking duck from this specific location before going to visit her every once in a while. And it's worth it. My dad's a huge fan of duck and it's one of the best presents I can bring home to him. It's a convenient location, very centrally located. on the way to nasty ass tao yuen dimsum or whatever its called around the corner, i stopped here for some roast duck. its totally NOT a sit down kinda place, but the food is so good youd want a rice plate and eat it in the car to savor that flavor. lo and behold the land of organ meats!!!! i picked up some pig skin, pork blood cubes, vegetarian mix (i suppose veggie delight) and some char siu roasted livers. all of the organ meats were deliciously prepared, sauces/drippings balanced and textures just right. liver a bit dry but it WAS bbq'd. they also have pig ears, intestines and other parts. decided to start conservative for the first visit, and will try more when i come back :) if you are a true offal fan this little shop will not disappoint. $4.50 for a small box of entrees, $3.50 for small box of veggies, $5 for half a roast duck and i think it was $2-3 for the charsiu livers. plus, it was really nice that the proprietor spoke english - definitely not how it would go down in sf chinatown. read more

I bought 2 box of roasted pork for 27$. I am so disappointed about the quality. The food were old, and it's not "roasted" at all. the pork were actually re-deep fried with a lot of oil. The skin of pork is very disgusted, we have to throw nearly 2 boxes, too much fat and too much salty, I would give zero star. Walking back from picking up my roasted duck somewhere else i saw Sun Hing with pre-packaged ready to eat food. As my joint was out of roasted pork, i figured I should hit this spot up for some roasted pork took with my veggies and rice tonight. The older gentleman and the younger man was there and super friendly. I walked in told him I wanted a box, pointed through the window, and off I went with my roasted pork to boot. $4 for a box of different meat offers they had. I saw soy chicken, offal, duck tongue, and bbq pork (Cha siu) i assume they were shutting down but it was only about 3pm. So for those who wait until 5pm I'm sure there are slim slim pickings. Did not have the issue with unfriendly service while I was there. They also had semi-cooked/smoked duck legs. They looked kinda yummy! I will have to give them a try next time. Pretty inexpensive meats actually. Not that much more than my usual spot so I may give them a while. I saw roasted pork at $9.99 per lb and roasted duck for $17.99 whole or $9.99 for a half. Sun Hing Restaurant does have a few tables for dining in but the atmosphere isn't very nice, practically just about all food bought is to go. This place is almost entirely a meat deli of Chinese food including whole roast duck USD 13, squabs, with the exception of two vegetarian dishes, vegetarian delight and string beans. The last time I bought the vegetarian delight they made it spicy so I won't be buying that any more. The other is string beans USD 5.50 for a large box. The quality is decent. read more
