Sun Up is easily one of my favorite places to brunch in the LKN area. I go mainly for the Bloody Marys... I tend to return to restaurants based on what I know about them this "brunch in a glass" is all I need (needed). I might mostly be in love with them bc this is where I first found out that you should be putting meat inside of your Bloody Mary's. Due some personal dietary changes, I will be saving these for extremely special occasions. I am so easy to please in regards to vodka... Give me Tito's or give me aristocrat, and nothing in between. Due to $$$ I just usually get whatever the house vodka is and assume it is going to be either of those. ;-) Anyways, whatever mixer they use... the spice is perfect. I love some heat behind my drink but I am usually there with friends and can't have my vocal abilities succumbed to the wrath of a fire breathing dragon. I have had some Bloody Marys from other restaurants that I have been so hot that I couldn't pay one person from the table to finish drinking for me. Sun Up has the typical "check list of amazing things you never knew you should put in your drink." Olives, cheese, celery, sausage... umm, BACON. Since I have been to Sun Up a dozen times, I can't use my "I've never been here" excuse to have this on a regular basis (I've gone plant-based, mostly). Their food is decent... and, historically, I would have gotten any benedict on the menu and been a happy camper. Our party of four went to eat at Sun Up Cafe for breakfast, which we rarely eat breakfast out, so we were ready to enjoy ourselves and have some great food. Three of us ordered the Pumpkin French Toast, that was supposed to be made with a pumpkin batter, but came with pumpkin butter instead. Was good, but not what we had expected. The omelet looked delish. The potatoes were great. The bacon was good, nothing amazing. Service was really less than acceptable, complete with annoyed facial expressions. Waiting quite a while to be seated, taking our "order all at the same time" not sure what that meant, forgetting orange juice. Warming-up our coffee with literally a single splash and off she went. I just did not feel welcome or treated like a guest at this nearby establishment. To top it off, excuses made that this was an unusual amount of customers due to pee wee football?? And the South Carolina Game? (Plenty of staff I might add) Yeah, there was an apology, but it came at the very end, maybe our faces finally said it all instead of hers. read more

I had a much higher rating in the past and I don't know WHAT is going on...but I would have given a one as a gift if this past Friday had been my first experience there! Awful, AWFUL 'service'. Asked for a latte upon arrival...food came and it still wasn't there. Speaking of the food...got the chicken and waffles. Waffle top quarter had some syrup on it...that was it. Asked for more syrup...was told they were out. OUT OF SYRUP? At a breakfast place? At 8:30 in the morning? Come on! I've gotten the C&W there before...these were hardly passable as the same food as what I'd gotten previously. My husband orders the EXACT. SAME. THING. each visit. Eggs over medium, rye toast, double toasted, no butter, extra crispy hash browns and bacon that is NOT crisp (waitresses use both floppy and lightly done there) What did he get? Eggs, HARD. Toast barely touched the toaster. I am not sure the hashbrowns were even cooked and bacon that was well past done. It was an epic disaster. Awful service. Horrid food. Will NOT be back until I hear from a whole lot of people that Sun Up has gone back up in service and quality. BLECH! read more

This is a much needed breakfast/bunch spot in the area. What I loved: Mimosas of all varieties, bloody Maries (although they advertised a bloody mary bar..maybe I missed it??). Even still, the bloody mary was great. Solid breakfast. The Huevos Rancheros has black bean patties so I suspect that they may have a vegan option of some-kind (perhaps they can sub the egg) but I forgot to ask. What I did not love: The set up. I just didn't dig the stark open vibe. All tables across restaurant are low. They do have a bar to sit at toward back wall. They are in need of some height within the decor/set up to break it up. Lastly, staff was just ok. Host was pretty rude. That didn't bother me so much and I would give it a go again (mostly because I stay at hotel in area somewhat frequently). I was there on a pretty busy day and would probably would be more impressed on a less busy more well staffed morning. However, I would recommend it, still...for mimosas and bloody mary's. Very disappointed. Wanted to try this place for brunch. Came at the wrong time, 11am very busy. Waiting over an hour to be seat. Then passed over several times while people we're waited on that sat after us. Order food and felt like the cook didn't care. No flavor on the chicken salad or potato salad and the sandwich just fell apart as I bit into it. Husband got chicken and waffles and that all he got . 2 pieces of chicken on 2 waffles. I've gotten take out from this restaurant several times. I'm never completely happy with what comes with a meal, and I'm not impressed by how they incorporate ingredients. That sounds picky, so let me explain. I ordered the banana peach French toast and assumed there would be bananas and peaches on top of the fer each toast...instead, they must have been somehow melded into the egg mix or something? Idk. I had to really think while I was tasting to find the peach banana flavor. Maybe others expect what they serve when ordering this French toast. ‍. I've also ordered pancakes and had to ask for syrup to go with the pancakes, otherwise I didn't get any. The people there appear fake friendly if you know what I mean...almost like they hate the job and the people they work with and it shows through their dealings with customers. First time visiting the Sun Up Café. It was awesome. Sharon was our wait person and she was great. She gave us great service and would ask for her table next time. (more on her later). I ordered the eggs with biscuits and gravy with homemade sausage patties. The sausage was very very good. Had a nice little spice kick. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The Biscuits and gravy were fantastic. The gravy was nice and peppery just how I like it and the biscuits were very light and fluffy. My wife had the corned beef hash and it was the best I ever tasted. I am not a big corned beef hash person but would order these the next time I go. Before we left we said lets try out the donut holes. My wife asked Sharon for an order of the little donut holes and Sharon said they were not little and said she had made them. They came out nice and hot and were sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar with a blueberry sauce as well as a vanilla icing type sauce. I am nominating Sharon for donut maker of the year. They had a nice little crunch on the outside and were soft on the inside. Add the sauces and you could not ask for any better. One final note on Sharon. I always ask for chocolate milk at breakfast when I eat out and the wait person always forgets to bring it out. Sharon did not forget which was great. The vinyl seats in many of the booths are tore up and you can snag your clothes on them, some of them are that bad. Can't you put some duct tape on those for now? The vibe was not pleasant and the staff was not friendly at all. The poached eggs were VERY undercooked/runny/raw and most of the whites were non existent. I went to culinary school, I know how to cook them correctly, (yes, I was offered a redo, but there is no way with all the nightmare stories you hear). The Scotch eggs were great, and that's why it gets a 2 star, and I order them everytime I go there. I hadn't been there in about a year, but the bathroom is nasty and I the place has gone downhill. Came in for a late breakfast on a weekday and it was pretty empty with maybe a half dozen people seated. We were seated right away and our drink orders were taken. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs and my daughter had the eggs Benedict with a side of cheddar grits. Everything came out quickly. The corned beef hash had peppers and onions mixed in, the eggs were sunny side up perfect. Also the hollandaise sauce on the Benedict was really rich and creamy and very good. The cheddar grits were a little soupy but still ok. Overall it was a pretty good meal for our first time here. Prices might be a bit high for breakfast in this area. The acoustics in this place is awful, tho. With just a few people seated, it got pretty loud from the noise in the kitchen and bar and the diners. I imagine it's super noisy when it's packed, something I don't plan to experience. I'll probably come back on another quiet weekday morning and try a Benedict. read more

This is hands-down the best breakfast and brunch location in the Lake Norman area. It has a very large menu for every taste including great options for those who do not like breakfast food. For those who do like breakfast and brunch items, this place has amazing options especially omelets and Benedicts and southern staples (grits and fried green tomatoes) and for those who want a northern flare there's even a bagel and smoked salmon option which was delicious. We've tried several items on the menu over the past few months and have not been disappointed. The service is excellent, the cocktails are fresh and spicy and the overall experience is great. I tried their special, which I really wasn't sure I was going to like it - it's Chix 'n Waffles, chickens and waffles. OMG it was so fantastic, the pricing was excellent, the food was fabulous, and so much that I was fully stuffed after eating it. I'm sure all the people around Langtree love the fact that they actually have food and booze close by now. Outside of going to Davidson, I can't think of a better breakfast spot around. After a late night at the Kilted Buffalo and staying at a friend's place close by, this was the obvious choice for brunch and bloody mary's. When we walked in the quaint little spot about 10 deep I knew it might take a little while for me to get my booze, so I went straight to the bar. I then find out there is paperwork you have to fill out to get a bloody mary. I like the idea of having a build your own, without doing the work, but when I'm drinking a bloody mary I really don't need to be making tough decisions. I went with top shelf vodka, house mix, add hot sauce, add bacon. It was awesome. The girl sitting beside me got add hot sauce, add tabasco, add horseradish. It didn't look like it sat very well with her, lol. As per the food. A great selection of brunch type fare. Omelets, benedicts, and other top of the line breakfast choices. I had the shrimp and grit cake benedict. Absolutely perfectly poached eggs over fried cheesy grit cakes. Served with cajun shrimp and a bacon hollandaise. I would go ahead and give these guys a 5th star, but a few of my counterparts didn't seem to have as top quality of food as me. One girls huevo's rancheros had burnt tortillas. Another said her cheese steak wasn't all that great. I'll be back and will update. read more

Sun Up Cafe was the spot my team selected for an early breakfast Friday morning, and we did enjoy ourselves there. The space is open and bright and the menu does have a wide range of options. I ended up doctoring up my own Benedict (since there were not too many strictly healthier options on the menu)--- egg whites, onions, sauce on the side and I used rye bread! The berry mix was full of blue and black berries- which was great. My latte was also delicious and able to take in a to-go cup. Our service was a tad slow and not too friendly, but it was 8am.. overall good pick and I would venture back to try lunch! read more

Atmosphere good with exception that they have this huge rest with open tables and yet try to take people and stick them back by the bathroom hall in the most unappealing part of the rest when they have a Ton of open tables in the more open airy section. Why, because they obviously don't know how to manage the pleasant high school hostesses that are just doing as they are told. How many people have to ask u to reseat them before u get a clue. Manage your front rest better and keep the back section closed until ur rest fills up. People come and pay for not only food but the experience. sticking someone in the back is ABSOLUTELY A GREAT WAY TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE DON'T COME BACK. Maybe make them a little smaller so the insides cook. A few of ours were undercooked in the middle and had to scoop that part out. But the rest tasted great. We have been here multiple times now with friends or as a family. The service has been excellent every single time and the food is good. I provided three stars instead of four because I feel that they nickle and dime, keep in mind this place is kind-of on the pricey side for breakfast (I get it, its not Denny's) BUT each dish has almost no syrup and then they charge $1.50 for a minuscule amount of extra. Also, I ordered the Sun Up BLT and was very disappointed how small the sandwich was for $9 (I just wont order it again). The breakfast potatoes leave a lot to be desired, needs flavor. Their doughnut holds however are AMAZING! Waffles, omelets, huevos rancheros and ruben are excellent as well. These are the items that will keep us coming back. read more

Read the reviews and was so excited to try a new breakfast place! I have lived in the area for 10 years and I'm always on the hunt for somewhere to add to my favorites. However, our experience was lacking luster and my 3 star review is more like 2.5. We came in around 1:30 pm, and the waitress was extremely rushed and aggressive, while she only had one other table to wait on who had finished their meal. She set our drinks down in a group away from us, instead of setting them down individually in front of us, rushing away again to chat with her table. Our interactions were short and hurried. We ordered the standard breakfast and the chicken and waffles. Waffle/pancake was good, the fried chicken was the size of half a deck of cards and was... crispy to say the least. Tiny container of syrup and not much else. The rosemary sprig was a nice touch. No refills were offered for drinks. The waitress was nice to us when it was time to pay, but all in all, just a very sub par interaction. Not worth the drive or the time read more
