The restaurant is just one big room almost like a factory which is very fitting given the amount of ducks they are pumping out. We requested the Peking duck dinner beforehand and it seemed like everyone else had the same idea. We were a little overzealous and ordered some apps before the dinner. The egg rolls were massive and one of the better ones I've had with a crispy exterior and a tasty interior. The potstickers were also crispy but not as good. Onto the dinner, they carved the duck right in front of you which was a nice little show. The first thing that was ready was the duck and bao buns. We ordered an extra six which was well worth it. The bao was light and fluffy while the duck was tender, juicy, and flavorful. Sprinkling on some pickled onions, those duck baos were the star of the show. The duck soup came out next which was an afterthought with everything else we had. Finally, the duck fried rice came out which was good but didn't contain too much duck. It's nice that they repurpose the remaining duck into the soup and rice but all I needed was the craved duck and baos. Overall, this was a great experience and a fun night. Chinese restaurant that is a Chicago establishment with lots of history! Reserved the duck dinner for 2 on a Sunday night for 6:30pm. By the time we left, it was a full house. Service isn't slow but isn't quick either - reasonable! The duck dinner is GREAT value. Serves about a party of 4 - we had leftovers to take home. For $60, you get a whole duck, 6 buns, duck fried rice, and duck winter melon soup. Great for a family on a budget. Taste wise, it was OK for me. I've had better and more authentic Peking duck at Chengdu Impression, but it's definitely a higher price there. The duck here came with pickled carrots and daikon rather than cucumbers, which lead me to believe this is a Cantonese-Vietnamese style of duck! The duck fried rice was OK (not much flavor besides soy sauce, seemed Westernized) and so was the soup - broth felt basic but very homemade. Overall decent spot if you're just getting introduced to Cantonese style Chinese food, if you've had a lot of peking duck or Chinese food in general I would pass on the duck dinner unless you're on a budget and just want to fill up on food. read more

We had reservations for 2 & were seated right away. The BBQ duck was perfect, crispy on the outside and flavorful and juicy on the inside. I tried their "Scorpion" cocktail which was very sweet, reminds me of a Mai tai. The fried rice was pretty good. There was soo much good food, enough for maybe 3-4 people. THE place to come if you want some good authentic chinese food. the service is hit or miss but typical of hole in the wall asian places. everyone is right about the duck - you can't come here and not order the duck! the flavor is immaculate and the meat is so tender. we also ordered the stir fried chinese broccoli and pork + bean sprout rice noodles, both of which had equally amazing flavor and was cooked as perfectly as the duck. i would however skip out on the bao buns. we ordered the nutella and red bean buns (you can pick up to 2 flavors per order) - they were unfortunately dry. this place still gets 5 stars though bc the main food was perfection. read more

Went back last weekend for the Beijing duck dinner for four. Outstanding! I would skip the non-alcoholic cocktail next time, ($9 dollars for fruit punch) but we will definitely bring people back for this. No reservations left for Saturday evening, so we did a walk-in a little before 6pm. The hostess , who appeared to hate us with white hot intensity, said she couldn't guarantee we could get the duck because people with reservations get first dibs. Then she made us go stand by a pile of junk in the corner for all to bear witness to our shame. That lasted about 90 seconds, then she seated us. But the friendly and helpful server quickly confirmed it was not a problem to get the Beijing duck. So if you can't get a reservation, just go a little early. Four of us had plenty to eat with no appetizers but extra buns. (for a total of 10-12 buns, I think. Hard to recall. It was a feeding frenzy.) You get insane value at this place. Definitely worth a trip, especially since it's a shop with so much Chicago history and as much of a landmark as it is a restaurant. My boyfriend and I got four dishes, which at any other Chinese restaurant in Chicago we could easily clean, but we had enough leftovers for another dinner. Everything was pretty good (especially the duck). You can definitely get better, more authentic flavors somewhere else, but the price point makes it unbeatable. I mean...six BBQ pork buns for $5 is crazy. The only complaint is not all their dishes are on their menu. So if you're a first-timer you might miss some stuff. I'm not doing much for Sun Wah by adding this 5-star review, but just in case you haven't heard yet, this is probably the best Peking duck you can get in Chicago. The restaurant has expanded over the years, and now occupies a large cafeteria-like space off of Broadway. I've never actually been during busy-hours, so not sure what the wait times look like at its peak. The service is always very quick and straightforward, typical of your average Chinese restaurant. We always order the Peking Duck Combo, which is one whole Peking duck sliced at table side (watch out for the flying juice), and duck soup with duck fried rice. This combo will usually get 4 of us to a nice state of being satisfied without being overly stuffed. The Peking duck comes with pickled vegetables, sliced green onions and carrots, duck sauce, and buns to make your own little baos. The duck is always perfectly cooked and juicy without tasting too gamey. Die-hard enthusiasts will note that the Peking duck does not come with the traditional crepes to wrap the duck meat, and that this duck is more of a roast duck than the actual Peking fare. Regardless, the duck soup has a ton of umami and helps to prepare the stomach. The duck fried rice has the most wok hai of any dish I've had in Chicago. It all boils down to a really fantastic meal, and one that satisfy the duck craving fully whenever I feel it. I dread the day when Sun Wah will lose its stride and become just another Chinese BBQ spot, but for now, I'm enjoying everything to the fullest. read more

Go to Peking Duck restaurant with table side carving. Complete duck dinner includes duck fried rice, duck soup, and buns. Large duck is carved at table. Carcass is retained for soup and fried rice. The duck was perfectly cooked. Skin crisp and meat juicy. Order came quickly after being seated. Dinner comes with 6 buns we ordered an addition 6. Ordered beef Chow Fun. Odd things encountered. $.25 for a alice of lemon or $1 for a whole lemon. Not enough onions, sauce, pickled veg came with duck and buns and additional had to be ordered. Although I knew how the duck was served additional explanations for first timers should have been given. I like the front kitchen back kitchen setup and wide open floor. The room is beginning to show wear. Chair marks on all walls need some paint. When asked if one duck was enough for a party of 5 the waitress had trouble answering. I say we had enough. read more

This places gets really busy so make sure you make reservations! The food isn't absolutely unforgettable but the table side Peking duck experience where they slice the duck super fast is not what you'll usually see. The Peking duck comes with 3 dishes; the sliced duck with buns, duck fried rice and the duck bone soup. Stay away from the beef tendons and congee though! Beef tendon had no taste and was super soft and the congee is very bland. This place gets really loud and serves liquor, I don't drink so I can't say how their cocktails are. read more

This place is some great Chinese food with a large variety of items. I have been wanting to try this place for a very long time. You don't need a reservation even with a large party. My friends and I came with a party of seven and we were able to be seated immediately. The whole duck is something to order with the whole family or friends as it comes with a lot: noodles, bao bun, fried rice, and a bone broth soup. The Singapore Mai Fun was delicious and cooked very well. I haven't had Singaporean style noodles in a long time and it did not disappoint. I blame Travel Channel for my somewhat longtime obsession with wanting to check out Sun Wah near the Argyle Red Line stop. Two days ago, I was able to finally cross that off my culinary bucket list. My first time here was simply positive, with my cousin and my nieces having joined me. BBQ and roasted meats are the main draw here, and I must say that the BBQ pork and the roasted duck met with my expectations. The pork was juicy, sweet, and succulent while the duck both meaty, tasty, and bone-riddled at the same time. You should've seen my face when I ordered the "small" hot and sour soup. I assumed it was in a regular sized bowl, but the waitress brought me something that could feed at least a family of five. Nonetheless, we dug in. As for me, the soup was just what I needed as I dealt with a slightly uncooperative nose (the pollen is wild here). I think I downed about six or seven bowls' worth. While the food was top notch, I'm afraid I can't compliment the restrooms. I was glad my trip to the men's facility didn't take long. We came for the duck dinner $60. You need to call and make a reservation in advance to order this. The duck dinner comes with a whole duck that's sliced in front of you, fried rice, and a soup (has cilantro) made from leftover duck bones. I recommend an extra order of baos for the duck. We got the roast pork too just in case it wasn't enough for 4 people. The roast pork had crispy skin and some kind of soy sauce glaze type flavor. It had a salty sweetness. I really enjoyed it. I think this was the right amount of food for 4 people. We usually always have leftover but no leftovers for the first time. If you guys like spicy food, try their hot sauce. The chili sauce that comes out is one of the hottest I've had at a restaurant. It's hot when you try it and creeps up on you for even more heat. Be careful! read more

I got the roast pork and chicken over rice. I wish the chicken was more flavorful. The roast pork was decent. As for the green beans, I think they should season it a little maybe with some oyster sauce. The plate is filling and for $11 is a good price. My friend enjoyed her Singapore noodles. Peking duck dinner comes with: -buns, hoison, chives, and carrot -duck soup -fried duck soup -vinegar carrot and radish -can serve 4 people (or just bring home leftovers) Duck is tasty, but if you've gotten Peking duck in Beijing, it's not the same. They don't cook or cut the duck the same way that you expect to get in Beijing. It's still great though! Just not exactly what I built up in my head. We got the off-menu "Beijing Duck Dinner" for lunch, which you need to call in advance to reserve. It's a multi-course meal that uses every part of the duck in each course, and costs $60 total. Split among 4 people, it was a good amount of food at a very reasonable price. It started with a server carving up the roasted duck meat in front of us into slices, which are paired with 6 steamed bao buns and pickled vegetables. This was quite good-- the baos were soft, the meat was tender flavorful, and the vegetables added a fresh and light crunch to it. The next course was a bone broth soup, which was savory and hearty. The final course was Duck Fried Rice, which contained egg, peas, bean sprouts, and small portions of the remaining duck. It tasted pretty good; the duck pieces in it made it more greasy and flavorful. We also ordered the on-menu stir-fried eggplant, which was a bit flavorless. The restaurant itself is very spacious and decorated simply, with a casual ambience. Can't rave enough about this place and their Duck Dinner. Always go for the Duck Dinner! It comes with a whole succulent, roasted duck enjoyed Peking duck style, as well as pillowy buns, fried rice made from the duck meat, and soup made from the duck bones. This set of dishes could be more perfect. The duck meat was tender while the outer skin was light and crispy, paired with the warm buns this was heavenly. The fried rice was probably second best dish of the night. Well-fried and not at all oily with lots of flavors and wok-char. We also go a few other dishes. The ones that stood out were the Oxtail Stew with Bean Curbs and the Short Ribs in Gravy. Both the meats were tender. I would skip the Crispy Lo Mein, bland and cold for some reasons. Heck, skip everything and just get the duck dinner (re: comment above). They got big space but still get packed and busy, especially on the weekend. But food is so worth it so plan accordingly. I have lived on and off in this area on and off forever and this year was my first time ever going to this joint. Carolynne M.'s review nailed it, this is not a place with any ambience, décor, or atmosphere. That said, I was totally happy with my meal at home. Ordering was easy and once I got there and saw the pork, the staff had no problem adding it to my order. Man that roasted pork and the duck were the crazy good! So well cooked and tender. The Queen and I also got the Shrimp Dumpling Noodle; highly recommend that. I ordered it with a side of duck...I don't recommend that. For the price of $6, it was boney and not a lot of meat. But the soup on its own was great and didn't need it. The Doctor got the Beef & Broccoli, his usual and he cleaned his plate. Also got an order of the Steamed Buns. There are six to an order, so I got the BBQ pork. They also had red bean paste and Nutella, if that is your thing. I saw a lamb stew on the menu and will definitely be on the look out for that next time I order from them. The menu itself is pretty extensive, so there is something for everyone on there. read more

Back after almost a decade and all is forgiven. I guess I can keep a grudge but let's put it behind us, shall we?? Because I'm glad we ate here recently. We ordered stuff that was familiar to us like 1) steak cubes in X O sauce (that was really good) 2) sautéed eggplant with minced pork 3) chicken/duck and pork BBQ with egg noodles (broth on the side) and 4) BBQ pork buns. It was all very satisfying, especially the cubed steak. For dessert, the Nutella baos were really good and Din Tai Fung (DTF) has a similar chocolate XLB too. The service was prompt and patient, there seems to be only one person covering the entire floor. Overall, Hon Kee remains my favorite Chinese restaurant in Northside Chinatown but Sun Wah attracts many for their Peking duck table side carving. read more

After finding out about this place from a chef-driven recommendation, it was definitely on the must try list! Sun Wah, with a bit of an underwhelming exterior did not disappoint at all. We started with the Egg Rolls, which I highly recommend you add to any visit. Some of the best anywhere! From there it was the popular Peking Duck Dinner, carved tableside and used for bao, fried rice, and soup. All three variations were great. Whether the the soft richness from the bao, the moist fried rice, or the freshness of the soup, all three carried their own weight! Paired with hoisin, a spicy soy sauce, a horseradish-y spicy mustard, or their out of this world sweet & sour, everything was a hit! I come here pretty often and it is consistent. I usually get the duck dinner with extra buns. Extra buns is important here because I feel like the buns are not enough. I think one duck can usually feed 2-3 people and the soup is amazing. Recently I tried the egg rolls and they were a bit lackluster for me so I probably won't be getting it again. The service is pretty quick. This is a great place to take friends, family visiting, or even a date. I am definitely coming back again! read more

Sun Wah is affordable place to have table side Duck experience if you are unable to have traditional Peking Duck experience in more authentic Chinese restaurants. They don't list Beijing Duck on their menu but they have it as "secret menu" where you just order and will be charged MRSP and based on availability. The duck meal is total of 3 courses: Duck which they serve table side with shredded carrots, leeks, pickled radish, sauce with steamed buns. Traditionally, it's usually thing crepes but not here, it's steamed buns. They take the bones of the duck and additional meats it make fried rice and soup that is very quickly brought out following the duck. We were in town for my cousin's baby shower and they took our whole group to Sun Wah. I've never had duck dinner and cannot believe I've been missing out on this amazing meal my whole life! My cousin made 7pm reservations on a Friday for our group of 7 adults and 5 kids. We were seated once our whole group arrived. The round tables are huge and the lazy Susan in the middle of the table was perfect for our family style dining. We immediately put in for 2 duck dinners upon being seated. We also got a few appetizers to start, my favorite being the stir fried eggplant! Every app came out quickly and we enjoyed it with their delicious house made chili sauce (caution: it burns your throat!). Then, we waited an hour for our Peking duck. We ended up having to walk up to the host stand to ask about the delay because no one came around to inform us of how epically busy they were. Our waters were bone dry at this point and all the kids had been granted screen time. Finally our duck came out and it was carved at the table. So juicy and flavorful and perfectly cooked. I'd like to say it was worth the wait, but it only happened a week ago, so I'm still a salty Sally about it. It really was worth the wait though. They make fried rice, soup and noodles out of the duck carcass. Those came out pretty fast after the duck carving. And then, we waited for our check. And then, we waited for them to run our cards (2). And then, they took our cash tip from the table. And then, they cleared the table. At this point, we knew promptness was not a word they respected, so we walked up to the host stand again. They said there was only 1 person who ran the credit cards...and she was very busy carving ducks. So, we asked for our cards, gave them cash and left feeling torn about how we felt about this place! It was delicious and had a refreshing taste which I believe is due to use of lemon grass and other vegetables used for the broth. It was a nice palette cleanser between bites of the fried rice and baos. Fried rice: Very standard fried rice. Wasn't anything amazing, but the portion was large and easily shared between 2-3 people Duck: The main star of the dinner. I love that they still incorporate slicing of the duck in front of the table. They also make sure to pour all the delicious juices on top after the carving. An iconic Chicago restaurant in the Argyle area, that's been around longer than I've been born. As a kid I came here with my parents often. I remember their old, small location was around the corner. You would see the cooked bbq meats hanging through the window, and the butcher (owner) chop away and packaging orders. A small shop that was flooded with dine in and take out, and people flooding the counter to put their duck or bbq pork orders. Our usual order was 2 ducks and 2lbs of bbq pork. When they opened a bigger location I was so excited! The Beijing Duck meal is our favorite! The duck is carved table side and is presented nicely. Included in the meal is duck soup, duck fried rice, bao buns, veggies, and hoisin sauce. So much food for your money, and we had left overs too. The stir fried eggplant is another fav. Served with garlic and delicious light gravy makes it an epic meal. Definitely suggest making reservations if you're going for dinner, and let them know ahead of time if you want the Beijing duck dinner. It's first come first serve! read more

Like many others have mentioned in their reviews, the off menu Bejing Duck Dinner is the star of the show on this menu. A generous serving of an entire duck, duck soup, and duck fried rice served with appropriate sauces and bao buns. It is delicious and used to be for reservations only, but lately I've gotten so much mixed feedback from this establishment and their staff, I'm not sure what to believe. Know this: the duck is 5/5, the drinks are pretty good as well, but the service is confusing at best and just downright rude at times. On three different occasions in the last few months I've wanted to reserve a table on a Friday or Saturday night to bring visitors (4 person party max). The forst time I called was right before Friday dinner rush, the woman said they were getting busy and ask me to call back the next day for reservations. That I understood, I called at a bad time it seemed and rather last minute. I was still somewhat confused by this though because the first several times I'd dined there a reservation for the duck dinner was required (and even their website said so and still does). The next two times, I was smarter. Calling to book a reservation on the Wednesday for a Friday meal and early Friday for a Saturday meal. Unfortunately, both times I was met with rudeness and told they don't take reservations. I was confused. I'd eaten there previously only because I was able to get a reservation for the duck. When I tried to clarify with the woman on the phone she said again they don't reservations. To say the least, I was dissuaded from driving to uptown to press my luck. I will give this place a try again. Likely in the winter months when it might be less busy. TLDR: off menu duck is phenomenal and a must order, but try it on a weekday if possible. I've wanted to try this place as it's always crowded but take out was disappointing. Duck over rice and Duck with Veggies both had not just duck bones, but the spine and lots of bone fragments throughout. Shrimp Fried rice has minimal (5) tiny shrimp. Egg rolls weren't even good.
