This is one of, if not the best, dinner spot on Tybee! Make a reservation to get a table and enjoy! On our last visit we had the pimento cheese fritters with yellow pepper jam. Delicious! For the table we ordered a "vegetable plate". This was 3 sides. We had blue cheese bread pudding (favorite), sweet potato soufflé, roasted Brussels (amazing) , and added the collards! I found this restaurant on Yelp, made a reservation for our first night on Tybee, had unanimous approval from my fellow vacationers that we went back on our last night. A unique and creative menu of local sourced foods. I thoroughly enjoyed the night's special which was a grilled red snapper and local clams with a deconstructed clam chowder sauce. Really magnificent flavors. Fish grilled perfectly. I had Southern Oyster Rockefeller for an appetizer , very good but with a little too much cream sauce for my liking. Service was friendly and efficient, the server, however, only made eye contact with my guest when explaining the menu. The decor was dark and cozy. Don't let the location fool you, some of the best eateries are tucked away in strip malls across from gas stations. Kudos to a creative chef! TLDR; Terrible service, incompetence and table management. We were really looking forward to eating here and celebrating my wife's birthday after a recommendation from a friend. We have a 14 month old and a 6 week old baby, so we made reservations for an early dinner (5:30 pm) for 4 people - me, wife, 14 month old, and our nanny (we didn't count our 6 week old since we just carry her). We walked in 5 minutes before 5:30 pm and checked in with the host. There was a couple at the bar, and 2 other couples in the main dining room. The host informs us that it will be a few minutes because a party had just gotten up. Mind you there was 3-4 booths directly behind available and not to mention 3-4 other tables. We get to the table and the booths are a little too tight for us to hold our 6 week old. We asked if we can be switched to a different table the server said no, they're all reserved - at this point there is still no other parties there or waiting to be seated. Basically, we would need to stay at our table or leave. A manager or server comes over and talks to us, she apologizes for the issue and says she'll see what she can do. We informed her that we can easily vacate whatever table they can offer within 45 minutes max. She offered us another booth which was even smaller than the booth we had. Appreciate her trying, but how does that solve our problem? So for my wife's birthday, we had to leave the restaurant we were looking forward to (with reservations) which was completely empty. I don't care if you're regarded as the restaurant with the best food on the island, overall experience always trumps food. In this instance we couldn't judge their food because of the incompetence of shifting a few tables. If you read all the other 1 star reviews about the restaurant - most, if not all are related to issues with reservations. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, I don't care if it's the "best" food in Tybee. read more

Delicious! I was curious about this little restaurant in a strip mall next to a gas station. As usual, hidden gems are found in unusual places. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and taken through the small, yet cozy restaurant to our table. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We had all been browsing the menu all day - so we skipped apps (except for the complimentary amazing biscuits) and went straight to entrees. Let me say that I am from a Coastal area and this was some of the best fried seafood batter I've ever had. It was mostly flour, light and super crispy. I ordered the fried shrimp platter with the twice baked loaded skillet potatoes (yes they were as good as they sound) and the coleslaw. Yum!!! The seafood trip, meatloaf, oysters and steak were also ordered by the table and there were clean plates all around. We sadly were too full for dessert. I went here a little while ago with my girlfriend and her mom and this place hit the mark on pretty much every aspect. For a busy night, the service was really good. I will say though, it did take a little while to get our check though. The biscuits they gave out were super fresh and warm. I could've eaten 20 of them. To start, we got the Calamari and Oysters. I've been eating Calamari a lot recently and this place had a top 3 calamari in my opinion. It had this sweet and slightly spicy sauce on them that they really nailed. It wasn't super sweet and had the right amount of kick to it. The only thing I would say is that they weren't the crispiest, but that didn't really throw it off for me. The sandwich I got was the grilled cheese hybrid thing. This was a lot of flavors going on at once. I think everything tasted good but it was a little overwhelming. It was also very meaty and I would've liked a thicker piece of bread to go along with it to help balance the ratio. The side of potatoes were my favorite thing outside of the calamari. The hushpuppies weren't anything super special but they served as a good palette cleanser. As for the fried fish, it was spectacular. It was seasoned well and melted in your mouth. The fries on the side were mediocre tho. As far as ambiance, in my opinion the seating was very uncomfortable. It's really my only knock on the place. The interior is cozy and you forget you are in a strip mall. Our server, Emily, was personable and very informative. The margarita was strong and refreshing. The southern grilled cheese was HUGE and delicious; Emily recommended the Brussel sprouts and succotash as sides, and both were great choices. I had one of the specials of the day: chicken fried chicken with choice of 2 sides and a drink for only $14. The chicken was crispy and flavorful. The sweet potato waffle fries were good. After exploring Savannah for the St. Patty's Day parade, I definitely wanted to check out Tybee for dinner before heading back to Jekyll Island. Many of the other choices on the island are pizza shops/generic American beach town food. Sundae Cafe was best-rated, and they offer some interesting creative updates to traditional southern staples. Despite my entree being a TERRIBLE, lukewarm flavorless burger that I could only eat half of, I still give them 4 stars for the winning sides I had the privilege of tasting! And yes, there was even a terrible side too--the succotash was cold and way undercooked--but the bleu cheese bread pudding was a phenomenon, and the bourbon sweet potatoes, absolutely decadent! There was serious masterpiece in those two sides, and I would return just for those. Also, my kid's chicken fingers were excellent quality and delicious. The key lime pie I had for dessert looked and tasted exactly like the egg/sweetened condensed milk/lime juice quick & simple version I make at home, so while it wasn't bad, I could've made the same thing myself, and I'd like something a little more special when I go out. The interior was pretty small and dark, and the booth we sat in needed refurbishing desperately. Our server came promptly and took our order (fried shrimp platter with 2 sides). The food was a generous portion. The flavor of everything, however, was across the board under seasoned. The "red sauce" (aka cocktail sauce) tasted like ketchup. Very small and understated restaurant next to a gas station. Got reservations and were promptly seated on arrival. Our waitress was extremely pleasent and very patient with our large party ( Taylor). Very accommodating to the kids. All of the meals were hot and fresh. Chicken jambalaya was delicious and a generous portion. The other members of the party enjoyed their meals. Even the kids ate without issue. I would suggest an annex to the menu for a few kids meal options. While they didnt have it, we were able to order off the sides menu and were content with it. Well let's start with, I really wanted to dine at this place and finally got to go. Only to be very disappointed at the door. First their internet was down so cash only, then they wanted to sit us at the smallest possible table, when we asked for a booth we were told that we couldn't have one of the 4 that was open! My youngest son had a burger which has a nice smoked flavor, older son had hot honey shrimp which he loved, along with greens and fries. Both excellent. As I was waiting to get off the plane in Savannah I overheard a conversation. A man was telling the person next to him that he grew up in Savannah and that his favorite place to eat on Tybee Island was the Sundae Cafe. I remember him specifically saying "it doesn't look like much from the outside..." and that was really enough for me to decide I wanted to try this place out. My friend and I stopped here for lunch and we were greeted and told to sit wherever we would like. The cafe is quite small so we sat at a table in the middle. I noticed that the place was decorated with large canvas photographs of Tybee Island. It was definitely a casual cafe but it is nice on the inside even if it is in a strip mall. Our server was very nice and friendly. She gave us time to look at the menu, which had some Southern specialties, sandwiches and salads. We both ended up ordering the po' boy sandwich with fried shrimp but for my side I got a salad and for her side she got the sweet potato fries. The sandwich was huge but very tasty. The shrimp were delicious and I really enjoyed the remoulade that they brought on the side to pour on the sandwich. I had a bite of my friend's sweet potato fries which were great and I liked the spicy dipping sauce that came with them. Tybee Island does not have the same amazing food culture as Savannah but I think that this is a good option for casual dining (thus it would be a 3 in Savannah but I'm giving it a 4 since this seems like one of the better options on the island). I am glad I overheard that man talking about the Sundae Cafe on the plane since it ended up being tasty and a good experience. read more

The exterior is unassuming as it's located in the middle of a small strip mall and sandwiched between a convenience store and a liquor store. Make reservations! Tonight I enjoyed the nightly special of Tile fish, explained as a similar fish to Chilean Sea Bass, on a bed of Orzo. Very good! Hubs that the Surf and Turf, fried shrimp and filet, and they serve all of their steaks with thinly sliced fried onions. His sides of creamed spinach and fried green tomatoes were good, as well. I also give kudos to their chop salad which I've had on priors visits. They always have a nightly special menu, as well as, their regular menu of entrees paired with their sides. Made reservations via Resy, loaded credit card info, phone number, and for some strange reason the hostess couldn't find our 7:45pm booking. She looked lost trying to locate on her tablet and could only offer the I'm sorry can't find it and sorry I don't have a table at the moment. I can probably get you in another hour? So we took our business elsewhere. But it is interesting how a well known restaurant can't figure out their own reservation system shortfalls. Just a quick search in other reviews revealed we weren't the only ones. We talked to another family that said someone came in and made reservations for a party of 6 over the phone and when they showed up they were turned away because they weren't on the books. Driving close to an hour to get there also added another layer of inconvenience. I'll update my review once we are even able to have our reservations honored. read more
