It's a small little place at lunchtime they have one menu and for dinner. They have a different one. It is so tiny that you would pass it if you didn't know it was there but we've had both lunch and dinner there and the service is great. TLDR; Terrible service, incompetence and table management. We were really looking forward to eating here and celebrating my wife's birthday after a recommendation from a friend. We have a 14 month old and a 6 week old baby, so we made reservations for an early dinner (5:30 pm) for 4 people - me, wife, 14 month old, and our nanny (we didn't count our 6 week old since we just carry her). We walked in 5 minutes before 5:30 pm and checked in with the host. There was a couple at the bar, and 2 other couples in the main dining room. The host informs us that it will be a few minutes because a party had just gotten up. Mind you there was 3-4 booths directly behind available and not to mention 3-4 other tables. We get to the table and the booths are a little too tight for us to hold our 6 week old. We asked if we can be switched to a different table the server said no, they're all reserved - at this point there is still no other parties there or waiting to be seated. Basically, we would need to stay at our table or leave. A manager or server comes over and talks to us, she apologizes for the issue and says she'll see what she can do. We informed her that we can easily vacate whatever table they can offer within 45 minutes max. She offered us another booth which was even smaller than the booth we had. Appreciate her trying, but how does that solve our problem? So for my wife's birthday, we had to leave the restaurant we were looking forward to (with reservations) which was completely empty. I don't care if you're regarded as the restaurant with the best food on the island, overall experience always trumps food. In this instance we couldn't judge their food because of the incompetence of shifting a few tables. If you read all the other 1 star reviews about the restaurant - most, if not all are related to issues with reservations. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, I don't care if it's the "best" food in Tybee. read more

Delicious! I was curious about this little restaurant in a strip mall next to a gas station. As usual, hidden gems are found in unusual places. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and taken through the small, yet cozy restaurant to our table. Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We had all been browsing the menu all day - so we skipped apps (except for the complimentary amazing biscuits) and went straight to entrees. Let me say that I am from a Coastal area and this was some of the best fried seafood batter I've ever had. It was mostly flour, light and super crispy. I ordered the fried shrimp platter with the twice baked loaded skillet potatoes (yes they were as good as they sound) and the coleslaw. Yum!!! The seafood trip, meatloaf, oysters and steak were also ordered by the table and there were clean plates all around. We sadly were too full for dessert. I've been eating Calamari a lot recently and this place had a top 3 calamari in my opinion. It had this sweet and slightly spicy sauce on them that they really nailed. It wasn't super sweet and had the right amount of kick to it. The only thing I would say is that they weren't the crispiest, but that didn't really throw it off for me. The sandwich I got was the grilled cheese hybrid thing. This was a lot of flavors going on at once. I think everything tasted good but it was a little overwhelming. It was also very meaty and I would've liked a thicker piece of bread to go along with it to help balance the ratio. The side of potatoes were my favorite thing outside of the calamari. The hushpuppies weren't anything super special but they served as a good palette cleanser. As for the fried fish, it was spectacular. It was seasoned well and melted in your mouth. The fries on the side were mediocre tho. As far as ambiance, in my opinion the seating was very uncomfortable. It's really my only knock on the place. Despite my entree being a TERRIBLE, lukewarm flavorless burger that I could only eat half of, I still give them 4 stars for the winning sides I had the privilege of tasting! And yes, there was even a terrible side too--the succotash was cold and way undercooked--but the bleu cheese bread pudding was a phenomenon, and the bourbon sweet potatoes, absolutely decadent! There was serious masterpiece in those two sides, and I would return just for those. Also, my kid's chicken fingers were excellent quality and delicious. The key lime pie I had for dessert looked and tasted exactly like the egg/sweetened condensed milk/lime juice quick & simple version I make at home, so while it wasn't bad, I could've made the same thing myself, and I'd like something a little more special when I go out. The interior was pretty small and dark, and the booth we sat in needed refurbishing desperately. Our server came promptly and took our order (fried shrimp platter with 2 sides). The food was a generous portion. The flavor of everything, however, was across the board under seasoned. The "red sauce" (aka cocktail sauce) tasted like ketchup. I was served an Exquisite meal this friday night at the Sundae cafe. This restaurant has been a personal favorite of mine for years. They offer an amazing lunch but I usually reserve a visit for a birthday or a special occasion because of how nice the place is. On this particular occasion, I opted to dine in because another local restaurant was booked all night. I arrived 20 minutes before closing but they were still able to accomadate me with marked hospitality. Setting- "Don't judge a book by it's cover." The outside leaves plenty to be desired as it is crammed into a prosaic gas station parking lot. The inside however is anything but pedestrian. Designed to be an upscale experience you can expect table cloths and candles with setting sensitive art work that gives this place just the right touch. This is the type of place people dress up for. Food- Unmatched quality. Upon sitting down, I was greeted with warm cornbread muffins and marmalade served in a charming little cast iron skillet. The muffins were fluffy, warm, and the perfect start to what would be a great meal. Sundae cafe's menu offered an array of Cocktails, draft and bottled bears, and wine. On the food side they offered fresh seafood, Chicken, and steak dishes. I was looking for a steak and they are currently serving two cuts: NY strip and fillet. I opted for the special coffee rubbed NY strip medium rare. I also wanted to make a surf and turf kind of thing so I added a side of fried shrimp for $12. The shrimp by the way were so good they almost stole the show from the steak. Extremly fresh and tender with the crust fried to a crispy golden perfection. They were fried very cleanly without being greasy or oily at all. Seasoned perfectly and paired with the perfect hommade remoulade and cocktail sauce. My steak was cooked perfectly medium well and was seasoned expertly. I loved biting into the steak and getting subtle hints of salt and coffee which really work to wake up your palate. My steak was served on top of what seemed to be creamed cauliflower and alongside steamed broccolini and heirloom cauliflower. All of the sides were excellent. What really shined through though was the quality of the steak. It was tender, flavorfull, and succulent. Service: Hospitable and Helpful. My server Elizabeth did an excellent job. You can always tell an excellent server by how they react to the last table of the night. While I might of been the last customer of the night--I feel that I could have very well been the first as nothing was left out or rushed on my behalf. She even suggested dessert which I indulged in. The chocolate spoon cake was wonderful. It tasted like fudge cake only not as dense but just as rich. In addition to bringing out the cake she also put a resees's garnish on top since she knew I was torn between ordering the resees's pie or the chocolate cake. Final thoughts: Top Teir Restaurant This is a great place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. Probably an awesome date night spot for that special someone. As I was waiting to get off the plane in Savannah I overheard a conversation. A man was telling the person next to him that he grew up in Savannah and that his favorite place to eat on Tybee Island was the Sundae Cafe. I remember him specifically saying "it doesn't look like much from the outside..." and that was really enough for me to decide I wanted to try this place out. My friend and I stopped here for lunch and we were greeted and told to sit wherever we would like. The cafe is quite small so we sat at a table in the middle. I noticed that the place was decorated with large canvas photographs of Tybee Island. It was definitely a casual cafe but it is nice on the inside even if it is in a strip mall. Our server was very nice and friendly. She gave us time to look at the menu, which had some Southern specialties, sandwiches and salads. We both ended up ordering the po' boy sandwich with fried shrimp but for my side I got a salad and for her side she got the sweet potato fries. The sandwich was huge but very tasty. The shrimp were delicious and I really enjoyed the remoulade that they brought on the side to pour on the sandwich. I had a bite of my friend's sweet potato fries which were great and I liked the spicy dipping sauce that came with them. Tybee Island does not have the same amazing food culture as Savannah but I think that this is a good option for casual dining (thus it would be a 3 in Savannah but I'm giving it a 4 since this seems like one of the better options on the island).
