This summer during our trip to Tybee I remembered this great place which my family, who are locals, frequent often. When the reservation through Resy did not show up on their end they were able to accommodate us with a seat at the bar. The bartender was helpful and very personable. Quality dinner here this evening for a party of six. Heirloom tomato pie was the appetizer special and it was out of this world. Husband had the filet and I had the pistachio tuna. My husband said it was one of the best steaks he has had in his life. We topped it off with chocolate spoon cake and banana pudding cheesecake. A huge shout out to Julz and Harley, our servers, who showed us gracious hospitality during our visit. This was the best food on Tybee Island by far. Those who've eaten other spots might not find that a high bar to clear, but this place is well worth the visit. We came in sunburned and buzzed from a day at the beach, and they seated us without a reservation. My wife ordered some seafood dish or another (don't remember, it was a couple months ago), and I had a spectacular burger. Food was average at best . I got blackened scallops . I think they forgot the spice but they charged me extra for it . For $40 I got four average size scallops . Sides were okay . Wife got prime rib . It was not seasoned well and probably the worst prime rib that I have had . Took it home for the dogs to eat . I had low expectations since this is a tourist area, but it rivals the food at some of the best restaurants in the SF Bay Area. As others have said, make online reservations. This unassuming restaurant in the middle of a small strip mall was absolutely fantastic!! I was traveling with my mom a week ago & we stopped at Sundae Cafe based off other reviews we read. Our server Bella was awesome! She had a great attitude, was super sweet, knowledgeable & never once made us feel rushed. We decided to get 2 lunch items to split. The fried chicken special w/homemade sweet potato waffle fries & coleslaw (came with cornbread) + Georgia fried shrimp w/red rice & squash casserole (also came with hush puppies). The house cocktail sauce & remoulade also accompanied the shrimp plate. Every single bite was better than the last on both items & all the sides. We were doing a dolphin tour nearby and picked a restaurant nearby and made reservations the week of our trip. My mother is picky and she got the special "halibut with hush puppies and fries.($26) I got the same and my sister got fried shrimp with fried green tomatoes $and mash potato .($19) After The meal I got praline cheesecake... yummy. Unfortunately my mother didn't like the halibut after the first bite and found a hair on her fish . Everyone loved the hush puppies tho!! I was really excited that these folks are open for lunch, because I had read such great reviews of them. Unfortunately at least for my tastes they did not live up to it. First, while on the menu they list all sorts of wonderful sounding potential sides -collards, squash casserole, succotash, potatoes, green beans, they do Lise the caveat that not everything is available every day. I was rather disappointed when I asked about sides and three different versions of fires plus rice and gravy were listed. I guess that should have been my warning that they were essentially cooking everything out of the fryer. Second, if someone tells you that their special of the day is fish and grits what do you imagine? For me I think the trinity with a little creole spice and some tomato. Well unfortunately that's not what was meant here. Instead they meant fried fish and grits, no unifying sauce. They did throw in two largish hush puppies and a slaw. The fish was lovely but this plate was just too unbalanced. Overkill on starch and not enough vegetable. I'm glad the natural flavor of the veggies that the slaw contained shined through, because they were somehow soggy and the dressing had no flavor. The hush puppies would actually have been better sold as corn meal beignets the were so sweet. If I were to be here longer, I would come back if the chef promised to scare up some vegetables or if I were in the mood for fried fish and French fries. read more

Portions are very generous so go with a empty stomach! Well worth the money. I got the fried chicken with broccoli casserole. Could have easily got 3 meals out of it for $10. My boyfriend got the "grilled cheese" which was more meat than cheese that he really enjoyed. When I asked for a container for my (very tasty) ranch to go - the friendly waitress gave me a fresh container and offered me a cup to go for my sweet tea. I'll start by saying, yes it's in a strip center with a gas station on one end but don't let that scare you away. I'm from south Florida but I've been living in the Midwest for the last 8 years. Anytime I'm near the ocean I try to seize the opportunity to get decent seafood. I sat at the bar and pretty much went with the bartender's recommendation so I got the bisque and the tuna. Before either item came out he brought some bread with olive oil. Right off the bat I was please. Along with pepper and herbs, the olive oil had a ton of Parmesan cheese in it. I'm not sure when people started leaving that out but it's the only way to go. Shortly after the bread, the bisque came out. It was excellent. Good consistency and lots of crab. I kind of got the impression the tuna was their flagship dish. It had a very light crust and was seared rare. The tuna was served over some mashed sweet potatoes that were topped with some sweet potato strings. On the plate they drizzled three sauces. There was a sweet glaze, a wasabi mayo and sriracha. I like spice but sriracha is a little much for me so I left it alone. The glaze was great and it went very well with the wasabi mayo. The sweet potatoes were very good and there's quite a large portion. If I didn't have the bisque I might have been able to kill them all but when it came down to it I didn't have any room left to polish off the potatoes. During my meal the couple sitting next to me at the bar struck up a conversation. At some point they asked me how I found the place. When I told them Yelp they said, "Well you're lucky because it's by for the best place in Tybee". I was staying in Pooler about 40 minutes away but this was well worth the drive. I highly recommend it even if your not in the immediate area. read more

I had the mixed grill special with salmon and scallops, sun dried tomato basil alfredo sauce with lobster ravioli and sautéed spinach. The bread pudding was phenomenal, and I've never liked bread pudding. Our server was fabulous, so friendly and helpful. They have all sorts of cocktails and desserts I want to try but I'm too full. Very disappointed especially after reading all the positive reviews. Went to Sundaes on Saturday night. Very pricey but if the food is great we don't mind splurging once in a while. The appetizer we ordered was good but it was all downhill after that. Waitress was nice but overworked. My husband ordered the flounder for $38 and it arrived smothered in a sugary type sauce that just killed the healthy fish taste all together. Not ideal for a diabetic. I ordered a meat dish which was overdone and not worth the $40 price tag. For dessert we ordered key lime pie at $10, which I normally love, but it was hard instead of smooth with a strange non-limey taste and hubby said it gave him lockjaw! As noted in other posts, the outside appearance would scare off most people and it almost did for me. I gave it a chance and was transported into a cozy and romantic ambience that caught me off guard. Ultimately it was the Yelp reviews and photos that sold me on entering and they didn't disappoint. I started off with the Seafood Cheesecake appetizer. The name sounds wrong but the flavors tasted so right with crab, shrimp and Gouda as main components drizzled with a balsamic reduction. For dinner I opted for the Lobster Mac and Cheese and substituted the Sweet Potatoes with Bourbon for the asparagus. The Mac was delicious though definitely a cheese overload, the Sweet Potatoes easily a dessert option. The chef added a deep fried shredded lace of the potatoes for a unique dual prepared sweet potato. The desserts looked amazing but I had no room left. The restaurant books full regularly and reservations are strongly recommended. Service was outstanding and the environment was quiet and romantic. I would amend the post for this restaurant to a $$$ menu as the price was definitely in that range but to be expected for the quality of food and service. This is definitely a Tybee gem that would be a shame to miss. read more

Went to lunch at this place...Sundae Cafe. Sat next to Todd, his 4 girls,a friend of his, and for some reason the 2 wifes were sitting at a separate table. Wonder why the didn't push the tables together?! Todd asked his daughter if she could be any sea creature what would it be, her answer was a "mermaid "(I knew it!) Than he asked what would you make your sister, her answer was a "monster "(not a good idea, she would eat the mermaid!) His children were very well behaved and very polite. Todd and his crew paid their bill and went to the beach. The waitress informed us Todd paid our bill, he told the waitress he felt his children were too loud and bothering us! WHAT! To Todd and your family ....thank you so much for lunch, it truly was unexpected and not necessary . I dont know how I will ever thank you ! We had a late dinner here after having trouble getting service anywhere else. I made a reservation for 8:15, and although we were not seated until 8:45, it was well worth it! Seafood bisque: Creamy but not too thick. Had authentic chunks of different seafood like lobster and some veggies like celery. Not fishy at all! A great starter. Lobster mac and cheese: Comes with a side of spinach sauteed in garlic and onions. I would have eaten more veggies as a kid if mom had made it like this!! Spinach was warm and there was only a slight hint of garlic that was not overpowering. The sauce of the mac and cheese was a delectable mix of cheeses and creams. Chef didn't skimp on chunks of lobster. On top of all this were whole chunks of tender, succulent scallops! The restatement itself is small, cozy, and romantic with two rooms. By the time I left there were several people waiting in line. As mentioned, the restaurant is in a strip mall beside the bp gas station and convenience store. The restaurant sign is not lit up so it may be mistaken as closed. However, there is an OPEN sign that is lit. Parking space is small for the small restaurant. Be careful of speed limits here. A lady was pulled over across the street. I was pulled over minutes later because I was not aware of the 35 mph limit at the curb that changed to 30 mph. read more

The food was fabulous! The portion was much larger than expected. We had the pistachio encrusted tuna with wasabi sauce, broccolitini , and a delicious sweet potato soufflé with crispy sweet potato garnish. Also, the Fried seafood Trio. While there's lots of fried to be had at Tybee, the platter at this café is lightly battered and perfectly crisp, using fresh seafood! They are still taking appropriate precautions for the Covid outbreak... Unlike many other restaurants here :-( Another tip: if you call in an order ask about the daily specials... Finishing off my final four states and we spent a couple of nights in Savannah. When one is in Savannah, a trip to Tybee Island and the Sundae Cafe is definitely in order. It doesn't look like much from the outside. If you didn't know, you would likely drive right by; but don't be fooled. The food is excellent. I am a bit of a mac and cheese snob (it is called mac and cheese for a reason) and I rarely go for one that is (insert meat type) mac and cheese. After explaining this to our waiter, he told me I should still give the lobster mac and cheese a try. I did, and he was right. It was the bomb! My husband had the crispy scored flounder, somewhat of a specialty of the house. He, too, was very happy with his selection. The portions are generous, so be sure to pace yourself. You will want to make sure you have reservations. Even with a reservation we had to wait a bit, but it was worth it. Excellent server, excellent food. read more
