Well...... coming from CA I guess I'm used to a specific type of Mexican food. This was not it. Very bland. Not spicy. Everything taste the same. The atmosphere is very inviting plus the staff is always super accommodating and pleasant. The fireplace is always burning and so nice. The food is traditional New Mexican. The homemade salsa and dessert sopapillas are very good. The food is always hot and consistent at a good price. There is better food but it's not in the town of Red River. Options this time of year are Very limited, trying to be objective. Our family has dined @ Sundance more than Ten times, this was our last visit. The guacamole salad is not 100% avocados, not sure what additives are in it, very bland stay away. I ordered the beef tacos, the beef that was in the taco was very dry, like reheated from a couple days, stay away. My wife ordered sour cream chicken enchiladas, very little chicken and not fresh, not sure many days it had been cooked, or possibly out of a can. Prices for quality, way too expensive. Help was decent, food was not. As mentioned, not many restaurants open for dinner, options limited, suggesting if you're for good New Mexican food, this is not the place, frozen dinners an option. read more

We just had an excellent dinner at Sundance restaurant this evening. Our server, Liz, was awesome, the chili rellenos were delicious and we really enjoyed the agave wine margaritas too. Loved the salsa as well. We will definitely eat here again next time we are in Red River. read more

They serve a solid 4 New-Mex fair, but the sopapillas and honey bump it up a point because they are so delicious. Be sure and get reservations, as the first night we came there was a 2 hour wait. The only thing we didn't love was the queso, which isn't what we're used to in Texas. To us, it seemed like it was from a jar. Were able to get reservations for 5 when I called at 4. We arrived at 4:50 and checked in. At 5 they began seating the folks that were there about 30 folks were there with reservations. By the way, make reservations. It isn't that hard to do. We were seated and our drink order was taken. Chips and salsa were already placed. Drinks arrived quickly our food order was taken. #2 large combination for me and the stuffed burrito for my wife. Great attentive wait staff as drinks, chip and salsa were kept full. The food arrived in a satisfactory time and it was tremendous. Too much. However, the dessert was still to arrive. Pillowy puffs of fried dough and honey butter. Should have walked for a couple of hours. The prices are on the menus so not much room to complain. Wonderful meal in a great venue. As for my earlier review of hit or miss. Probably the best restaurant in Red River. Sundance has a pleasant atmosphere with low lighting and local art throughout the restaurant. Waitstaff is friendly and attentive and the food came out quickly. The vegetable fajitas which had portobello mushrooms in a balsamic reduction were phenomenal. The complimentary sopapillas are excellent as well. Would highly recommend Sundance to anyone; however, be sure to make reservations prior to arriving otherwise you will have to wait to be seated. read more

Have eaten here twice during our stay in Red River. The food was great - green Chile chicken enchiladas were scrumptious, stuffed shrimp appetizers very very good! And, after the meal they bring these giant delicious sopapillas with honey butter! OK, what else can you say about the only Mexican food place in town? They have a unique New Mexico twist on their menu (This isn't TexMex) coupled with great servers with winning attitudes. Another terrible red river dining establishment. I dont know how these overpriced places stay in business. The salsa was tasteless and the queso was concession stand quality. There were no unique New Mexican dishes on the menu so I settled for enchiladas. $14 for three bland enchiladas. There should be categories other than "Mexican" to describe the many cuisines influenced by Mexico. One of them is NEW Mexican, which is not to be confused with Tex-Mex. Sundance Restaurant is a nice blend of both, targeted straight at the tourist demographic of Red River. Sundance is an old-style family owned restaurant still stuck in the late Seventies as to decor and cuisine, but still serving decent food at decent prices. The last time I ate there, I had a chalupa and the sopapilla. The New Mexican chalupa is a different animal than the same dish found in Texas and California: a stack consisting of a fat (gordita) tortilla base topped with beans, avocado, cheese, salsa, chunks of turkey, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes. For my money, it's the food of the gods. Sundance gets it almost right: the former La Cocina Restaurant in Taos did it better, with a blue corn gordita-style tortilla on the bottom that made it a full meal. Sundance uses flour tortillas, which is a shame in country which invented the blue corn tortilla. Still, it was quite tasty, the home style salsa is very flavorful, and the sopapillas are perfect -- sweet, not too crispy, and drenched with butter and flour. My dinner companion had never had one, and this was a nice introduction. Overall, we had a fine experience, and would go back, but not with any expectations of New Mexican haute cuisine. This place is packed on weekends, perhaps as much because the rest of Red River shuts down at 8 PM as because of its high quality. I recommend reservations, or be prepared for a substantial wait. read more

Very very good. Stuffed Sopapillas are incredible - had them 2 nights in a row. First night with half green sauce, half red sauce, second night red sauce - my favorite but both very good. This is not Tex Mex, has a few Tex Mex regulars, great chips and salsa, but otherwise it's just damn good Mexican. Down side? Couple I believe to be the owners are so unfriendly on the surface. They stand at he front but don't smile, don't engage in conversation. Remind me a bit of the farm couple with pitchfork painting. it's a bummer because it's a bit of a buzz killer. Still though, that wont stop me from getting stuffed Sopapillas and then complimentary Sopapillas for dessert. read more

This place was probably one of the busiest restaurants in town for the 4th of July so I had high expectations. Well first of, this is a New Mexican restaurant, not Mexican. We received chips and salsa which were ok. I ordered guacamole for my kid since he likes avocado so much and we got some pale green dip---made me think of avocado with sour cream (WTF?), they don't have a liquor license so they only sell Sangria and beer. I ordered the rolled chicken breast and it was ok...the one thing that was great were the sopapillas but I think it's hard to mess those up--overall experience, disappointing. If we would have had a different waiter we would have had an overall better experience. We were there for almost three hours and waited forever on food and checks. The food is not bad and the margaritas are tasty, so it's worthy of more stars for food. Would recommended the chicken fajitas! This place is a family favorite! My parents, my husband, my son, and I went to eat here last Friday night. We were glad we had a reservation that night because the place was hopping! We were seated and waited on right away. The chips and salsa were delicious. Our food was prepared to order and was hot, tasty, and delicious. My husband and I ordered a combo plate, which was more than enough food to satisfy our hungry appetites. Topping off the meal were large, puffy, delicious sopapillas only made better with some honey, butter, and sugar. These were included with our meal.
