Disappointing! There was a lot of hype when Sunmerry first came stateside a few years go. But, upon visiting, Sunmerry's product offerings primarily look like an 85 bakery copycat. I was hoping for a different point of view in the 626 asian bakery space. So, I tried a more unique item - the earl grey & matcha mini croissants. What a mistake. The matcha was a matcha chocolate coating on the outside of a croissant and the croissant didn't seem very fresh. These two very unexpected textures made for an unpleasant eating experience. Also, the flavor wasn't there to make up for it. Even Costco croissants taste better than this. Then, I quickly moved to the Earl Grey mini croissant. This was a little bit better, but I think they overcompensated because Earl Grey is a very subtle flavor so the last note was weirdly artificial/floral. I believe a croissant should be the perfect in-between of flaky and soft with a rich butter taste & Sunmerry's croissant was the complete opposite of that. Came in hoping to buy some bread just to find out the shelves were basically empty (see photos), and this was at 4pm. I decided to get some drinks and a Tiramisu cake instead. They also took a while for my order. The brown sugar milk tea was literally like a cup of milk, and had no brown sugar flavor whatsoever, even though I shook/mixed thoroughly multiple times before drinking. Similar to 85 degrees in layout and style. I found the breads fresher and they had a lot more variety. The milk pudding bread was exactly the same but more filling. They even had Nutella filled bread. I also like their drinks. Not too sweet. Just the perfect balance. The down side....the serving plates were dirty like they haven't been cleaned for more than a few days. They didn't have the paper sheet to place on top of the tray BUT then I realized all the breads were already prepackaged. Still....when you walk in and grab one....you're already grossed out. All of their bread is similar to 85. The name. The kind. The shape. Even the packaging. But their taste is not as good as 85. Alas this place is closer to home than 85 so when I have bread cravings (which is a lot) I'd rather go here. Their brioche is definitely not as good. Their salted cheese tea drink is basically like sea salt jasmine tea from 85, not as good. Their egg tart is definitely not good, just not good - it's too dry, too small. Their berry cream cheese is not as good. Their mushroom bread is not as good and not as long. Their nutella cookie bread is surprisingly pretty good, even after 1 day old. Their soft donut cake is really good, actually one of the things I like to get from this bakery (they don't have this in the glass display, they prepackaged plastic it and located in the middle island). Their strawberry hokkaido mini cupcake is also good. All in all, if just rating the bakery itself, their bread is definitely superior compared to other small bakery. It's more hip and it opens late. But since everything is so similar to 85 (even with packaging the bread, notice the way the put into plastic then into plastic bag), it's hard not to compare it with 85. 85 is better. Sometimes the cashier is nice. Sometimes they're not so nice. This last time the cashier guy didn't greet, didn't ask if I had a membership, and didn't give me my receipt (I took it myself)! read more

I came on Mother's Day to pick up an online order for the 'MOM' cake and was given a broken cake. Part of the first M was broken off and the cashier had even checked the cake before giving it to us. The picture I have attached was taken right after we had gotten into the car. Also, the organization was terrible. If you're going to open up for preorder AND walk-in purchases, make separate lines! We had pickup for 10:30am and we didn't see anyone directing the line. There were no signs and all the customers were confused and just lined up. It wasn't until I almost got to the front of the line where a worker finally came out to tell everyone that everyone must line up together regardless of preorder pickup or not. I understand we are in difficult times where we must put distance from one another but if you're a franchise that's choosing to only open 1 store for a holiday, be better prepared and more organized! read more

This is a long overdue review for this Sunmerry location. I went to go pick up bread from them but during Mother's Day this year I ordered a "MOM" cake. It was so good, the cake and frosting wasn't too sweet but just sweet enough. The cake frosting was super creamy and delicious. During order and pick up, the store was super cautious about letting too many people wait. There's a bit of wait to get in but that's totally understandable during these times, and I appreciate that they do this. Also they are individually wrapping all the breads. Probably the best cream cake I have ever had! The staff was courteous, the atmosphere was vibrant and popping. Only downside is finding parking, I was dropped off and my husband later found parking but by that time I was already done picking up the nicely boxed cake which also came with plates and utensils! I love their custard bread at Sunmerry ! It's soft and filled with warm custard. Just the right amount of sweetness for me. There is also another taro bread here that I am a big fan of! I'll be back to try more items since I've only been here once. You have to try the cheese foam iced coffee here! I was very skeptical at first but my aunt had bought it for me to try and I surprisingly really enjoyed it. There is no strong flavor of cheese so don't worry. It has the right combination of sweet, salty and creamy. I also really love the fresh lemon black tea. When I don't want something too heavy I'll go for this drink. Super refreshing. We got ours pretty late today around 5:45pm but it is still within their delivery hours. It definitely sucks that you cannot track where the orders are but knowing they are a small business and this is a critical situation, I think they already did a great job in delivering within the time window! Hands down my favorite Asian bakery. Bread quality is always consistent and they are reasonably priced. With most of the other Asian bakeries, I'll often find dry over baked buns in the batch or burnt bottoms. I have never had an issue with quality here. 85 would be the only other bakery that I would rate highly in consistency. Faves: walnut cookie, taro bolo, taro mochi, bolo milk butter, and Nutella cookie. The savory ones are alright. The roast beef is a little on the greasy side and I wished they used any other cheese than American. Service can be slow during certain parts of the day and parking is pretty terrible on weekends. Join the toast club for 10% or items of the week and redeem points for a discount. read more

With many coffee shops being closed due to the pandemic I was in need of my coffee fix and Sunmerry was one of the few places whose doors remained open. I've known about them since I go to Blazin Chicks next door but just saw them as a lesser Cafe 85 but since they're still open I'll give them a try. For the uninitiated they sell baked goods, coffee and milk tea similar to Cafe 85. They may be similar concept but their inventory are completely different from each other. I've got a few baked goods and the majority of them I enjoyed. The coffee and teas are my go to drinks here and depending on the time and day some items aren't available. They have taken steps to curve the spread of the virus by requring everyone to sanitize your hands before entering and only allowing 3 customers/family at a time. Another bonus is they recently joined air lines reward programs which means you can get miles for every dollar you spend here. read more

Of all the SGV Sunmerry locations, the Temple City location is the worst. The last time we visited, the brioche topping was slimy and mushy. This time, the brioche tops were burned to a crisp. We usually get the black sesame brioche donuts from the Santa Anita mall location and they're soft, fluffy, and perfectly filled with black sesame. Today, we got the black sesame brioche donuts from Temple City and they were hard, stale, dry, and had barely any filling. The staff at Temple City needs training. Over the years, this plaza has boomed with new businesses and it's great to see more bakery options around the area. My usual go-to is 85°, but that's all the way in Alhambra on Main. Sunmerry provides a good selection of baked goods. What's even better is I can walk to it in 10 minutes (that way, I don't get too guilty for indulging on carbs). At 85°, I normally get the brioche and the plain garlic bread, but they drench the garlic bread in cheese now, which upsets my stomach. Sunmerry has the garlic bread that I like. They also have the brioche similar to 85°; I've never tried it, so I'm not sure if it's comparable. Like other chain bakeries, Sunmerry also makes tea and coffee drinks. None of the options stand out to me a lot, so I typically stick with the normal milk tea. Overall, a great neighborhood bakery. read more

Been one of my go-to bakeries these days. This time I got the dirty buns, mochi donuts, and the egg and cheese tarts, and the lemon and kumquat green tea! I have also heard that the shitake mushroom bun was pretty good from my mushroom-loving girlfriend. The dirty bun is dusted with cocoa powder and the insides have chocolate ganache! I think there used to be more ganache, but still a good bun for my darker chocolate lovers out there! Mochi donuts here are on the sweeter side. I've tried the cookies and cream and matcha white chocolate ones they have here. They were a little too sweet for me, but the texture on point though! For the egg and cheese tarts here, I recommend eating them on the day of for the best experience when it comes to the crusts. The egg tarts have pretty good flavor but I like the usual dim sum ones better. For the cheese tarts, not many places have cheese tarts so I thought it was pretty good! It's filled with baked cream cheese, but I would prefer a flakier crust. They have a pretty packed tea and coffee menu and I tried the kumquat and lemon green tea. If you are a fan of sour drinks or candy, this is for you! Reminded me of those war head candies from back in the day. read more

Great place! It's very similar to a 85 Degrees. I came here on Saturday to buy a cake. I purchased the mango brûlée cake for about $30 and a freshly squeezed lemon black tea for about $3. The cake was good! The mango part was excellent. I didn't enjoy the bread part as much. It taste like chocolate and it didn't mixed well with the mango flavor. I wish the cake would have been mango flavor too. The lemon black tea was excellent! It had real lemon and wasn't overly sweet. I asked for 80% sugar. The store was clean and modern looking. Sunmerry Bakery is located in the Camellia Square on the corner of Rosemead and Las Tunas. This location has a lot of parking. Don't waste your time circling the lot. Park in the underground structure instead. They have a good selection of breads, croissants, danish pastries, cakes and drinks. A lot of the breads remind me of the ones at 85°C Bakery but I was quite impressed by the number of savory options they had here. If there is cake, I will never des(s)ert them... Rainbow Roll Cake * The colors were vibrant * Cake was quite dry and lacked flavor * Mascarpone filling was thick and creamy Golden Cheese Roll Cake * Cake was fluffy but it was a little too sweet * Thin layer of cheese filling added a lot of flavor I enjoyed the sweet and savory combo! Previously went to Sunmerry Bakery a number of times. Always enjoyed seeing their variety in baked goodies and drinks although it's a relatively small shop. Taiwanese, I think. Went to pick up a couple cake slices for a mini celebration. Such cute individual packaging! I've picked up a couple whole birthday cakes from here last year and was a hit with family friends. Delicious and very visually appealing. Generally not too sweet, just right. The Black Forest cake slice was good! The mocha walnut cake slice looked great, yet to try it myself haha. Another time I had their Boba Brown Sugar Fresh Milk with an ol' friend. Not bad although perhaps more brown sugar could've been added since it was mainly milk with only the brown sugar already mixed with the boba. Overall, great experiences. Minimal traffic when I went and sticker decals were placed on the ground reminding everybody to maintain social distancing. In and out in less than 5 minutes, yes! read more
