It's been 5 yrs since I visited this place (moved away in 2021). I'm glad I gave this little place a try again. The food had improved greatly. I found out later, the owners had changed, in 2022. Fresh new owners, comes with freshly improved taste. This is a nice little mom and pop restaurant. My wife and I went crazy with the menu, especially for 2 people. Every dish was cooked better than the last time we ate here. We added another item (whole roast duck), but it's not photographed. We ate the duck at home. It was very tasty. A must try! The Beef in Spicy Broth was a new item on the menu, and so was the Fish in Spicy Broth. They are a great new additions. With both dishes having the right amount of spicy kick, my stomach didn't have to remind me of my life choices later. That was the best part. (If you had these dishes at other Sichuan restaurants, you know what I meant.) We will definitely be back at this restaurant, when I'm in town for work. I've been coming to Sunny Shine BBQ for years to pick up their roast duck and roast pork, which have always been reliable favorites. This was my first time trying their special lunch menu ranging $9.99 - &13.55 instead of just ordering BBQ meats. We ordered several dishes to share: * Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs * Braised Pork with Aged Vegetables * String Bean Chicken * Egg Tofu with Mushrooms * Stir-Fried Lettuce with Fermented Bean Curd * Spicy Vermicelli Pot with Clams, Scallops & Egg White * Steamed Giant Clams with Silky Egg * Salted Fish & Chicken Tofu Pot For an extra $5, we also added a small box of their brine duck, which was a nice addition. The lunch portions were reasonable for the price, and the service was friendly throughout our visit. Parking was also easy to find during weekend lunch, which made the experience convenient. The Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs had a slightly sour taste that made us question whether it was fresh, so we couldn't finish that dish. It was disappointing because everything else was fairly decent. Overall, despite of the pork ribs, I still think Sunny Shine BBQ is a solid neighborhood, family-owned restaurant, especially for their BBQ meats that I've enjoyed over the years. *Ordered thru DoorDash* First time trying this spot thru DoorDash. I ordered the two item rice combo plate (15.99) and a cold chrysanthemum tea (2.50) The food is OK. The BBQ pork was your average pork. Wasn't dry. Had a good proportion of fat and lean meat. The soy sauce chicken thru me off a bit. There was a herbal taste to it? The color is much darker than soy sauce chicken you get from Sam Woo. I questioned myself if it was soy sauce chicken. Good portion of rice and veggies were good! After I took my car in for service, I was looking for a restaurant that specializes in stir fry udon beef noodle, there were several places but it was kinda far from where I was. So I decided to just try the roast duck here, since is my first time eat here , I asked the owner if I can sample a small plate of roast duck and char shu, of course I paid for it. If I like it, I'll buy half duck and 1 pound of char shu for my family. When I enter the restaurant, it looks outdated and cluttered with boxes right next to the register, they should consider moving those plates/to go containers to the back or something, it feels like you're in a poor place. Anyway, I ordered the Mongolian beef, I thought it came with noodles but it didn't. Then I ordered the green beans, on the menu, it doesn't say is spicy but it was. Then the owner brought my bbq sampler with sweet dipping sauce, it has 3 pieces of roast duck and 4 pieces of char shu. Duck was ok, but the char shu was dry even with some fat on the sides. They served it with white rice. The young waitress there spoke pretty good English, but the older lady and older man don't really speak English but they do speak Cantonese and Mandarin. I asked the waitress why the menu showed the green beans as not spicy and she said the menu is wrong lol, that's funny. Maybe they didn't update their menu. After I paid and tipped, I went to ask about the duck and was about to order half but i wanted them to cut the whole duck that was hanging and I don't want the other half piece that was already cut. I don't know how long the other half was sitting there but she said no, she can't cut the whole one unless I buy the whole duck, she says the other half was only been sitting there for 10 minutes. Hmmm. I'm not really sure about that, so I didn't get it. Then her attitude changed to something that is a little condescending/rude...like I don't care if you want it or not, we not cutting that whole duck, take it or leave it. Will I be back ? no, even though I like both the Mongolian beef and green beans even though they were a little spicy. But thanks for the samples. I'm updating to a 1 star since I gave them 4 star about 23 hours ago and the owner says I'm poor. I came into the restaurant wanting a specific item and I'm by myself. I wanted the Mongolian beef with noodles and try their bbq, I also ordered the fry green beans. I'm fine with the Mongolian beef without the noodles. I been to many Chinese bbq restaurants and they do cut the duck that you pick like Kim Tar in City of Industry. And I do understand Cantonese, I just didn't appreciate the young waitress condescending attitude about not cut a new duck. But to have the owner calling me poor because I ordered the lunch special for $9.99, if that's the case, then don't put it as lunch special. And I'm sure all your food are fresh. And don't worry about me coming back because I would NEVER step foot in your restaurant again and I would advise others not to either unless you want a nasty attitude from the owner. If you're lazy to cook and craving some Chinese food, this is a pretty good place to go to. They have lunch specials that give really big portions for cheap but the normal menu pricing isn't too shabby either. The workers here are Cantonese speakers but they know enough English to help you order and understand what you want. I came and got some family style foods that comes with a bin of white rice which they will refill if you need more. Food not only comes with complimentary white rice but your choice of hot tea or my favorite, iced sweetened chrysanthemum tea! Pretty quiet with no music but doesn't mean you can't be loud and talk. First time trying Sunny Shine BBQ lunch special and it was pretty good! Their lunch special ends around 4pm so there's time after running errands on a Saturday to grab lunch. I've been to this place a few times to grab their chicken, BBQ pork, or roast duck. I remember their chickens were super plump and full of flavor. Meaning they were bigger than your Sam Woos; however time has changed. It's a good place to go if you're looking for BBQ roast pork or chicken. This restaurant is located in El Monte on Peck Road, right across from Ocean Bo (the place that sells dim sum) and Mana Tea House. The parking there can get really busy and the parking spots are really narrow. Especially during the lunch rush, the parking lot can get really packed. The service there is good, since I ordered to go I can't say about their wait service. Food comes out piping hot and smells so delicious. On this visit, I ordered Beef Chow Fun (dry style), Braised Tofu, Orange Peel Chicken and the Fish Filet in Black Bean Sauce. Also, as a bonus for their lunch special includes a box of complementary white rice. Most dishes on the menu are $9.99 or under. Overall it was a pleasant visit and the food was good. Especially if you're super hungry, it hits the spot just right. My only sad downside is that the boxes are not packed full like other restaurants. There was not a lot of fish filet in the Fish Filet Black Bean Sauce or a lot of chicken in the Orange Peel Chicken Dish. I guess times are tough and our dollars don't go as far anymore. I would give them zero star if I could! Be careful if you pay with card! They will charge 22% tips without asking customer permission? We only ordered four dishes and each of them is average around 16 dollars only. I can not understand how come I ended up paying 90 something! When I asked how much they charge me for tips, the lady just looked at me without an answer. So I asked for the receipt with details breakdown, she is not willing to show me the receipt. So a friend told us that this place has Chinese bbq, you know, roast duck, roast pork, and etc.... Came by today to pick up a roast duck for dinner that night, and since I haven't had lunch yet, also ordered up a Chinese sausage fried rice dish. To make a long story short, the sausage fried rice was pretty decent, not overly greasy, nor salty. So good marks for this dish. Now for the not so good, the roast duck was dry as hell, and we served it in our bowl of soup noodles at dinner time. Soaking in our soup broth, it was still pretty dry. This is an indication to me, that the duck was way over cooked, or was sitting in the display case, way to long. Restaurant itself was OK, about a dozen or so tables, staff was friendly and helpful. Was going to give 2 stars for the dried roast duck, but the Chinese fried rice brings it back up to 3, so 3 stars from me. On the day of lunar new year, my family decided they wanted bbq. Morning of, I went straight here as I thought it would be less crowded than other more well-known places such as Sam Woo BBQ. When I got there, I waited in line for about 15 minutes. I was happy to wait in line because they definitely follow safety guidelines during the pandemic. All of them wore masks and they had a line marked for 6 feet distance and only allowed two customers at a time could go inside. The BBQ ended up being great! They have the meat up front where you can choose it and they cut it up for you. They charge by the whole meat or by the pound. All was hot and ready, and you pay cash. I order a half duck, half soy chicken, 1/2 pound of sausage, and a 1/2 pound of roasted pork. All of were delicious, especially the duck. Prices were also cheaper than Sam woo. This is my new to-go place. Parking is easy as it is in a plaza that provides alot of parking. Bring cash as it is cash only. When I went on that day, the cashier spoke very good English. read more

TL;DR - Owner changed, customer service is terrible, the restaurant and food isn't clean and my family most likely got food poisoning from here. Went in to get the food and again the front lady just had to make it so obvious about how much she hated her job and projecting it on the customer. Mind you I was the only one there because the place was just empty. I asked for my food and she said it wasn't ready. Lady.. I called almost an hour ago and your telling me my food isnt ready when i'm the only one here? I asked again after waiting a bit but she was constantly giving me looks and was rude to me as if I owed her something. Just from this itself was enough for me to never step foot back in here again. Ok so I ordered a few items so the whole family can have this for lunch and dinner but man was the food just terrible. The vegetables had so much sand and dirt in there so no one even bothered eating it because clearly they weren't even washed. The other dishes in general were either too salty or very bland, some even tasted weird like it just didn't taste how it's supposed taste. There was just no in between. My kids had one bite of the food and ended up spitting it out saying they didnt like the food. My parents ate more rice than the dishes ordered. My partner and I had some and ended up discarding the rest of the foods. As wasteful as it sounds, that was just how terrible the food tasted. By midnight everyone seemed to all have upset stomachs and everyone was fighting for the restrooms. I'm not positive if it was because of the food we got from here or not but the kids were fine because they didn't have any of the food but all the adults were just taking turns using the restroom. I even ended up taking my father to the hospital just to make sure he was ok because his health is not good. Turns out we got food poisoning but thankfully everyone was fine after a day or so. The only reason I pick up lunch from this restaurant is because it is on the way to my office.  There are so many other Chinese restaurants that are much better.  One of the better restaurants is in the same plaza, but they don't have roasted duck and BBQ pork. It was a pleasant surprise when many of their items were on the affordable side. I was worried that the quality would be compromised, but was surprised that it wasn't lacking.
