BBQ Pork and Soy Sauce Chicken Rice Plate
    Steven T.

*Ordered thru DoorDash* First time trying this spot thru DoorDash. I ordered the two item rice combo plate (15.99) and a cold chrysanthemum tea (2.50) The food is OK. The BBQ pork was your average pork. Wasn't dry. Had a good proportion of fat and lean meat. The soy sauce chicken thru me off a bit. There was a herbal taste to it? The color is much darker than soy sauce chicken you get from Sam Woo. I questioned myself if it was soy sauce chicken. Good portion of rice and veggies were good! They did not have the chrysanthemum tea. Found out after I got my delivery. They subbed it with a sprite. I appreciate that they subbed it but would have enjoyed the tea much more! Overall, it was an OK spot to try for the first time. There are items on the menu that I'll like to try out!

I highly recommend Sunny Shine BBQ! The roast meats are incredibly flavorful, and the stir-fries are delicious. Great atmosphere and affordable prices--definitely a gem in El Monte!

Decided to check it out and made it in time for their lunch special (until 4PM every day including weekends). It looks family owned and the service was fast. They give a good amount of food. I got a half portion of the roasted duck and I like that it does have a lot of meat on it, flavor was good. The orange chicken comes with the sauce on the side. Next time, will try other items on their lunch menu.

This place deserves way more foot traffic. The lunch specials have amazing value and 2-3 entrees can feed a family. Not too mention it is very delicious.

It's been 5 yrs since I visited this place (moved away in 2021). I'm glad I gave this little place a try again. The food had improved greatly. I found out later, the owners had changed, in 2022. Fresh new owners, comes with freshly improved taste. This is a nice little mom and pop restaurant. My wife and I went crazy with the menu, especially for 2 people. Every dish was cooked better than the last time we ate here. We added another item (whole roast duck), but it's not photographed. We ate the duck at home. It was very tasty. A must try! The Beef in Spicy Broth was a new item on the menu, and so was the Fish in Spicy Broth. They are a great new additions. With both dishes having the right amount of spicy kick, my stomach didn't have to remind me of my life choices later. That was the best part. (If you had these dishes at other Sichuan restaurants, you know what I meant.) We will definitely be back at this restaurant, when I'm in town for work. Give this place a try and you won't regret it!!!

This review is for the roasted duck. I've been hunting for slighty cheaper price duck cause while Sam Woo is reallt good but their price has gone up tremendously. I came accross this Bbq place while I was in the plaza and decided to try it. I was so surprised! It's on the small side restaurant but seems cozy. Their duck quality was 8/10 and cheaper price! I will be back to try some other dishes.

The food was ok. I think it could be better. Beef noodle soup. Wasn't my favorite dish. I felt like the beef wasn't cool right to be tender. It was too hard to chew on it. The service was great tho. The waitress was very attentive but overall I give this place just an ok

Food is finger licking delicious. I get the half roasted duck and pork belly. Service is mediocre. I always get laughed at by the ladys behind the counter. They crack jokes in their language. Because waiting customers laugh as well. Ambiance is not appealing,

The waitress said the menu is wrong, the green beans is supposed to be spicy

After I took my car in for service, I was looking for a restaurant that specializes in stir fry udon beef noodle, there were several places but it was kinda far from where I was. So I decided to just try the roast duck here, since is my first time eat here , I asked the owner if I can sample a small plate of roast duck and char shu, of course I paid for it. If I like it, I'll buy half duck and 1 pound of char shu for my family. When I enter the restaurant, it looks outdated and cluttered with boxes right next to the register, they should consider moving those plates/to go containers to the back or something, it feels like you're in a poor place. Anyway, I ordered the Mongolian beef, I thought it came with noodles but it didn't. Then I ordered the green beans, on the menu, it doesn't say is spicy but it was. Then the owner brought my bbq sampler with sweet dipping sauce, it has 3 pieces of roast duck and 4 pieces of char shu. Duck was ok, but the char shu was dry even with some fat on the sides. They served it with white rice. The young waitress there spoke pretty good English, but the older lady and older man don't really speak English but they do speak Cantonese and Mandarin. I asked the waitress why the menu showed the green beans as not spicy and she said the menu is wrong lol, that's funny. Maybe they didn't update their menu. After I paid and tipped, I went to ask about the duck and was about to order half but i wanted them to cut the whole duck that was hanging and I don't want the other half piece that was already cut. I don't know how long the other half was sitting there but she said no, she can't cut the whole one unless I buy the whole duck, she says the other half was only been sitting there for 10 minutes. Hmmm. I'm not really sure about that, so I didn't get it. Then her attitude changed to something that is a little condescending/rude...like I don't care if you want it or not, we not cutting that whole duck, take it or leave it. Will I be back ? no, even though I like both the Mongolian beef and green beans even though they were a little spicy. But thanks for the samples. I'm updating to a 1 star since I gave them 4 star about 23 hours ago and the owner says I'm poor. I came into the restaurant wanting a specific item and I'm by myself. I wanted the Mongolian beef with noodles and try their bbq, I also ordered the fry green beans. I'm fine with the Mongolian beef without the noodles. I been to many Chinese bbq restaurants and they do cut the duck that you pick like Kim Tar in City of Industry. And I do understand Cantonese, I just didn't appreciate the young waitress condescending attitude about not cut a new duck. But to have the owner calling me poor because I ordered the lunch special for $9.99, if that's the case, then don't put it as lunch special. And I'm sure all your food are fresh. And don't worry about me coming back because I would NEVER step foot in your restaurant again and I would advise others not to either unless you want a nasty attitude from the owner. There's plenty of places to eat and have better service like the restaurant across from them, Ocean Bao. Don't come here, owners have horrible attitude. Instead of taking customers criticism and try to improve their restaurant, they call you names and tell you not to come back. Good luck

If you're lazy to cook and craving some Chinese food, this is a pretty good place to go to. They have lunch specials that give really big portions for cheap but the normal menu pricing isn't too shabby either. The workers here are Cantonese speakers but they know enough English to help you order and understand what you want. I came and got some family style foods that comes with a bin of white rice which they will refill if you need more. Food not only comes with complimentary white rice but your choice of hot tea or my favorite, iced sweetened chrysanthemum tea! Pretty quiet with no music but doesn't mean you can't be loud and talk. Definitely should give it a try if you want authentic Chinese food and even if you're on a budget. See my pics if you want to know what I feasted on!

    Peking duck

Very flavorful; would come back. The service was fast. And the ambiance was very peaceful.

    Prove that dasher cancelled

I ordered on DoorDash, order was canceled by dasher so DoorDash give me refund and tell me to reorder, now they called me and ask me why I canceled the order, I said I didn't it was the dasher who probably stole the food. They said ok they will prepare my new order. And guess what? They don't even bother putting the meat inside, it was a dry piece of duck leg cut in 3 pieces, I hope you guys get shut down, so unprofessional.

I ordered a soup online and was going to pay at the store since there was no credit card checkout option. When I've arrived, I asked to pick up my order and gave them my name and phone number. The lady rudely said "Wrong location we don't have". I asked to double check since the location said it was this store and she just simply said "No we don't have". The tone could have been way much nicer and respectful, as I have never seen anyone treat their customers like this. If the website isn't working, please remove it as this was an inconvience for me. This was one of the rudest experience i've experienced

Service was stellar - personal, but never intrusive. I liked that we were seated immediately and still given time for our late guests to arrive. Food arrived quickly once we ordered. They were gracious about splitting the tab afterwards, but could easily have asked whether we wanted separate checks since we were 3 unrelated sets of adults that arrived separately. So, what could have been better? The chafing spoons were too small and too few, leaving us to pull the chafing plate to the edge of the lazy Susan and scrape. My dinner plate was too small, so I made a bit of a mess while eating. The main room is noisy, even with some empty tables, Next time I'll ask for a table in the quiet section (to the right when coming in the main door.) I've driven past Newport Seafood many times and not gone in because the parking lot was already full, and it's not my style to park elsewhere and walk over. However, on Monday at 5 PM, we found ample parking. All that said, Newport Seafood seemed at its best when serving special meals to large families all around us. I will think of them next time we celebrate a special family occasion.

Claypot rice was perfect with crispy rice and combination of bok choi and spare ribs with a side of dark soy for your preference. Deep fried chicken wings with salted egg yolk had the perfect crunch fried shell with salted egg yolk basted on top. The chicken was super juicy and tender which encapsulated by the fried skin. The kaya toast was super fluffy with a French toast thickness sandwiched with kaya jam in between. The curry with fish ball and cuttlefish combination came with 4 of each and a thick rich curry with a kick of spice that went great with white rice. The pumpkin salted egg yolk had the perfect sweet and savory flavor that made you want to eat more. The steam flower roll w/beef was nothing short of amazing. I have to say this was the best version of steam flower rolls I have ever had. The flower rolls just melted in your mouth with super rich flavor coming from the sauce which was not overpowering the dish. The Hk style milk tea & and coffee was simply amazing with the perfect amount of tea flavor without being overpowered by the coffee and condensed milk. However, if you want to try something a little different, there are some "traditional" Kaiping specialties that I haven't seen on menus anywhere else. I've always come with my family and have received great service because my dad knows the staff. They speak my home dialect so I'm sure there's some bias there. Foodwise, I've tried quite a bit and haven't had any dishes that didn't hit the mark for me. Standouts for me are the big claypot yellow eel rice, their specialty roast goose (the 2 dishes just listed may require a preorder but again, my dad usually handles all the ordering), their beansprout with pig intestine, and their egg plant with salted fish. The claypot rice is ordered by the kilo so really is a big party dish but has nice succulent pieces of eel, really well cooked rice, and then of course the crispy rice at the bottom. The goose is very flavorful and not super gamey, it has more of a meaty texture and bite than the younger poultry an American pallette may be used to so word of warning. I really like the beansprout with pig intestine, again not really gamey but very savory with very tender, fatty pieces of intestine (highly recommend even if you're hesitant with intestine). The eggplant with salted fish is also intensely savory with a pungency from the salted fish that may seem like a lot but melds really well with the sauce and overall flavor of the dish. Though I haven't tried every dish on their menu, I've tried quite a bit and can confidently say they'll bring out some tasty Chinese dishes.

Wait time tends to be long during rush hour lunch time for weekends and dinner for any day around 6/6:30pm. You can reserve a table if you planned to come here which will save you time if it's crowded. Staff tend to be short on weekdays, a heads up that they are working nonstop and usually are walking around. I rarely see them stop and do nothing, and it does get a bit difficult to flag the down when they are running around. Today, we had an off day, just opened on a Sunday for lunch and we ordered lunch specials, the provided soup for free but the tea was just boiled water. Took my dad two tries to tell them it was just water (and had to open the pot to show them). Our food started coming around 11:30am and also more tables got filled up quickly so the staff are more occupied, you may need to catch them when they bring you a dish. Unfortunately, an error occurred and they forgot one of our dishes and since they were so busy we sort of finished our meal without it. So we had to bring it to their attention once we got the check (and it was counted on the check despite it not arriving to our table) l, they had to check to make sure we didn't get it. I will also say that the furniture is as used and old and always here until it breaks. The furniture are slanted, wobbly, chipped, stained and missing things. During the day they serve dim sum, and at night they switch over to Cantonese seafood dishes. I've eaten here many times for dim sum. They offer both traditional sit down service and a takeout counter in the front if you're in a hurry. The dim sum is solid and definitely hits the spot. Since I live nearby, it's one of those convenient spots I find myself coming back to. This visit was for dinner. We ordered a fish dish that was pretty interesting (honestly not sure what the exact name was), an oyster omelet, and clams with basil. Everything was tasty and definitely made me go through a couple bowls of rice. One thing I always appreciate is that they still give complimentary dessert at the end of the meal. We got green bean soup and some ma lai gao, which was a nice way to finish dinner. Overall, Ocean Bo is one of those neighborhood gems that has stood the test of time. It may not be the trendiest restaurant around, but it's reliable, serves good Cantonese food, and keeps the locals coming back.

Tried a majority of the menu items and so far, everything was yum and tasty! Ambiance is your typical Asian setting service...but still quick and efficient. This location also has private rooms if you are looking for a room for a small event. Room for three tables max.

Walked in... then walked right back out. There was an older Asian lady with a short pixie haircut working the front. She looked like the only person around. I stood there for a few minutes waiting to be served. She looked at me. I looked at her. She walked back to the register. Then she went to serve a table and looked at me. I looked back. Then she walked back to the register and turned her back to me. I walked over to the menu. She looked at me again. I looked back. At that point, it felt like we were in one of those romantic K-dramas where two people keep exchanging glances... except nobody ever said a word. Then she went to help someone else without so much as a "Hi," or an "I'll be with you in a minute." So I took the hint and walked out. For the first time in my life that I left a restaurant without ordering because of a silent staring contest. That was definitely... interesting. Onto the next adventure.
