My family go to spot for Chinese Banquet now. They sell lunch specials. It ranges from $11.95 to $13.95. This is a bargain. We ordered the winter melon soup plus five lunch specials and four items off their regular dinner menu. The dishes are as follows: Winter Melon Soup Sautéed Sole Fillet with Crispy Bone Peking Duck Crispy Fried Chicken String Beans with Minced Pork Braised Bean Curd with Brown Sauce Peking Style Pork Chop Fried Fish Fillet w Sweet Corn Sauce Minced Chicken and Salted Fish with Bean Curd Chicken and Salted Fish Fried Rice The grand total was about $270 plus I gave a $55.00 tips. The total charge was $330.00. I was happy. We go to other places for a thousand dollars a table, and I do not know what we ate that justified the charge. This place is packed for Saturday lunch. I had dinner here last week with the fam since my brother and his family were visiting from out of town. My parents have been talking about how good this place is and usually I'm skeptical about their tastes, but they were right for once. We ordered a lot, but here's what I ate since I didn't eat everything at the table. Westlake beef soup: One of my favorite soups. Really good! Clean tasting (as in no funky meaty gamey flavors). Perfect consistency. Beef chow fun (with gravy): Normally I like the dry version only, but my brother wanted the gravy version and honestly it was really tasty. The beef was velveted perfectly, the gravy/sauce was silky, and the distinct taste of wok hei shined through. Might consider doing the gravy version more often now. French style beef: Wow, this was SO good. They stir in thai basil with it so it's extra aromatic. Again, perfectly seasoned and cooked cuts of beef. This is definitely a must order. Salt and pepper squid: One of my must-haves at any Cantonese spot. It was really good, but me being nitpicky, I've had better elsewhere. With that being said, I would still order this here for sure. Seafood chow mein: Not a fan of chow mein, but it was honestly pretty good. If you're like chow mein, I would definitely recommend this even as someone who doesn't care for it. The flavor is all there, the chow mein was crunchy, the gravy was nice. No complaints, tbh. Sweet deep fried pork chops: Not really sure what to call this, but I did not like this at all. I don't care for sweet and sour pork chops and this is pretty similar to that minus the Red 40. Minor complaints: The dinnerware was a little greasy which was kinda gross. I saw a thin film of oil in my tea cup, so I grabbed a new one. Service was slow, but friendly. I guess they didn't anticipate getting that busy in the middle of the week. This is a very popular mom and pop Chinese restaurant that my mom loves. We can come here once a while, and the food is always great overall. Not every dish is perfect, but they charge a reasonable price and give large portions along with great service is why they deserve a 5 stars rating. Recently they have a very good promotion for lobsters! So we came here twice within a week! It's only $20 per lb as of this week! Not sure how long it lasts but very delicious and fresh lobsters! Also my favorite dish here is actually their dessert, steamed milk pudding! OMG it's the best Ive had in LA and I would just come here for their dessert! The servers are very nice and consistent with their attitude throughout the years even during busy times. Because some Chinese restaurants have some servers that be stressed when it's busy and become impatient with customers. I never experienced that here! Let me start by saying the portions are absolutely humongous so you must bring friends or family to help share all the food! We ordered a bunch of different lunch specials that came with a pretty good soup with a bunch of carrots in it. We ordered fried squid, beef chow fun, orange chicken, tofu, and a whole fried fish. The fried squid was lightly breaded and fried really well. I really enjoyed the orange chicken. The sauces in the tofu were not too salty and everything was cooked perfectly. Mr. Chopstick is THE place to eat amazing, authentic Cantonese food. It was packed when I went there. They have very good service - polite, quick, diligent, and no frills. Same thing with the interior - Simple decor, round tables, a backdrop, and no frills. The pictures outside are a bit worn down, but that's how you know they've got good history! The signs inside are also mostly written in Chinese. Even so, the staff speaks English a the menu also has English, so there won't be language barriers. The food is AMAZING! Comes in big portion and is very affordable, better than what my family can make at home. The highlights for me are the fried salt pepper pork, fish with Chinese broccoli, and stir fried beef. ** CUSTOMERS BEWARE ** ALWAYS double-check your bill. This restaurant will overcharge you if you don't pay close attention. We came for their lunch specials and ordered five dishes. The total came out to $145, when it should have been around $75--an overcharge of about $70. I've attached a photo of the incorrect bill (check #0046416) for reference. When I brought this up to another server, she kindly re-calculated it and confirmed the mistake. I asked who had done the original calculation, and she pointed to the person I believe is the manager. When I asked him how he came up with that total, he brushed me off, told the server to fix it, and walked away without even making eye contact. His attitude and body language gave off a very shady vibe, like an "Oh, I got caught--oh well" moment. It really makes me wonder how many other customers have been overcharged without realizing it. As for the restaurant itself, the lunch specials were reasonably priced, and portion sizes were fine. The service, however, could use improvement -- we had to ask multiple times for basic things. We ordered the fish filet with black bean sauce, chicken with vegetables, beef chow fun with soy sauce, a rice vermicelli dish, and roasted squab. The fish filet and beef chow fun were decent. My parents enjoyed the squab, and my wife liked the chicken with vegetables. However, we'd all pass on the rice vermicelli. Overall, given the circumstances of the overcharged bill, we won't be returning to support this kind of practice. However, I am glad I chose to come back. Since our party is small and we can't make a reservation. We opted to come early to get a table. Wow, it seems our early is not easy enough. The parking lot and the restaurant were full when we arrived. I waited for 20 minutes for a table, which is not bad. We ordered the fried pigeon, crab meat soup, beef cube, tofu, and O Choy. Say what you want about Mr. Chopsticks (filthy, bad service, etc) but you cannot deny that the place is always packed from open to close because their Lunch Specials are the best around town. I've been coming here since I was a kid and their food is consistently good. I personally had EXCELLENT service at my most recent visit and I left completely full and happy. The place is not in the best condition and I do suggest minor remodeling may boost their business more, but just because they old school wouldn't stop me from giving them my business. It's pricier than the other hot pot dishes, maybe because of the fish. Peking duck: 7/10. I like that they give you the meat separately from the dish with the mantou but nothing special. A lot of the meat didn't seem to have much meat on it. The mantou could have been better - it was a bit dry. They also don't give much green onions for this dish in my opinion. Pork ribs: 7/10. Good but nothing special. Sweet and sour fish: 7.5/10. I like this fish dish. It's good but not my favorite. They have the usual peppers, onions, and pineapple. Came for a last minute Sunday dinner around 6pm, the place is packed! Many tables reserved for bigger groups and if you're a party of more than 5 (6 if you're ok with a small table) it may be a long wait. Surprisingly flavorful and the beef isn't as chewy as it is before. The noodles were also very well stir fried with sauce distributed well. -fried tofu and mushrooms(?): I'm not sure the name on the menu but my parents saw another table order this and asked for it instead of our usual eggplant dish and it was delicious. Deep fried soft tofu and mushrooms,l were super flavorful, I enjoyed it a lot and glad we got it to try. -crispy orange beef: we usually get this dish as well, the crispy and sweet fried beef slices is super indulgent, not spicy at all and has a nice crunch. -spicy salt pork chops: it is always the last dish to arrive, we sort of ate everything and contemplated whether we should cancel if they didn't start cooking it. But by the time we decided the dish came. I really like their pork chops, in the past it didn't taste as fresh and had an oily aftertaste, but we enjoyed it this time. Crispy, salty, not spicy unless you get some sliced peppers in. After every dinner is free red bean soup, super sweet watery soup with some red beans stewed. A favorite childhood desert but also super sweet and I didn't eat more than a sip and gave mine to my parents. Overall, a great dinner for a last minute Sunday decision! This entire place is so filthy! The restroom floors are slippery. Parking is pretty sparse during prime time. Wait service is terrible. Overworked people who just had a bunch of attitude with serving us. We had booked 3 tables with VIPs at the other two tables. Our table got the scraps (legs, bits and pieces) of the lobster as the table with the VIP guests got the actual lobster tail. The restaurant is located in a very small plaza with Chase Bank, pet grooming and a couple smaller restaurants. The parking is very small/limited so keep in mind the time you go here. But still waited another additional 20min after getting to the restaurant as the food was not ready. The restaurant wasn't too big but definitely was busy as a sit down restaurant. What a nice find thanks to Eater LA. Tucked away in a strip across the street from Sam's club, this is a little gem of a restaurant. Food is fresh with snappy vegetables and good portions. We had the green beans and by far, one of the best I've had. The fish maw and crab soup was excellent. All our dishes were great. Ambiance is okay but not overly fancy. They have a garden in the back where they grow a lot of their veggies and windows to view. Service is my only complaint. I asked for separate bowls for rice and the waiter explained I should be using my used soup bowl. I just went to another waiter and he provided them.
