Sunny Side Kitchen is extraordinary as an honest eatery with really good food in an intimate environment. Everything is close, which adds to the kitchen's charm. "Kitchen" is appropriate because eating here is like visiting in someone's kitchen. I wanted to put an apron on and help out when I visited because it is such a close experience. Sunny Side is run by a husband and wife team who are retired journalists. The morning I visited, they greeted everyone by name as they walked in the door. I joined in on conversations at tables on either side because it's comfortable doing so in this setting. I had The Works breakfast panini with a pour over coffee. The spices in the panini made me savor the flavors, which perfectly complimented the individually prepared cup of coffee. I feel like an Escondido insider having found Sunny Side Kitchen. This morning a member of the staff from Sunny Side Kitchen came to my office (Progressive Technology Security Systems) and offered us a menu. My co-worker and I decided to grab something from Sunny Side for an early lunch. We phoned in our order and it was ready super fast! When I went to pick it up from the moment I stepped in, I knew we'd be coming back again! The menu isn't huge, but what they do have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner are to absolutely die for! My coworker and I ordered the Tuscan Chicken Panini & the Avocado & Bacon Panini. They were by far the best sandwiches we have had in Escondido, hands down. If I could give them 10 stars on Yelp, I would. The lunch entree came with a cookie (which was gluten free, moist, and wonderful) and rice. We were left very full & satisfied with our orders. Friendly staff and a great light breakfast. My friend had Yogurt Parfait and I had Avocado Toast. She said her Parfait was delicious! My Avocado Toast was just that-sourdough bread toasted perfectly and some mashed Avocado in a ramekin; I got to spread it on myself. From the lady picking up the phone to the last bite of the Tuscan Chicken Salad, this place deserves 5 stars. I went for a salad at 7a and a really nice lady took my to-go order. I got the Tuscan Chicken salad which is so fresh and delicious. It's the best salad, I've had in a very long time. The dressing is so flavorful and adds the perfect creaminess to a handful of dry greens, chicken, sun dried tomatoes, onions, and cheese. This place is genius. The sandwiches are things I think about often. The little cookies are a no-brainer. Please get them each time you go here. On the wall I think i remember reading that the owner used to be a journalist. I always thought I wanted to be a journalist. But then I think - maybe it wouldn't be fulfilling and I'd want to open a sandwich/coffee place. Then I think how damn good the food is at SSK and I'm like, maybe whatever I'm doing now I should quit and do the other thing - like be a journalist - and that will be my panini making. Found this little gem right before heading over to Taang! Records. Lovely atmosphere, perfect food. Everyone who works there seems to be family, and they're easy with conversation. I got a wonderful breakfast sammy with an extra side of toast (on tour with a vegan punk band as their drummer - I need my calories, mate!). So... let's start by I just got braces and three molars removed at the same time! So you know how that goes there after, trying to get one bite in! Horrible! It was nearly impossible eating anything. On my second day of recovery I was tired of yogurts and I wanted something more fulfilling and we decided to go over to sunny side kitchen (I'm a regular) and I usually love ordering their paninis but this time I couldn't eat anything crunchy, so I decided to order this egg and cheese "thing" that I forgot what it's called, but I believe he said that exact item on the menu typically takes about 15 min to prep because it has to be cooked in the oven. Well for my surprise not only did taste good, but it was incredible soft (it looks almost like it was corn bread or something similar, but with egg and cheese instead) Their customer service is always awesome and very welcoming! Most of the food they serve has some organic/homemade style taste to it. There isn't many places here in Escondido that truly cares for what your are being served but this place is one exception. I always recommend this spot often! read more

I was initially impressed with the nearly 500 reviews and a full 5-Star rating . . . initially; but despite the delicious food with creative flavors and the almost 'over-the-top' counter service, I found myself asking for something more about 1/2 an hour later. It's like it was too healthy or something. I know that's not a fair statement, but having something despicable on the plate may have helped. "Where are the chips?" (Nacho, 2006). The orzo accoutrement on the side and small floppy slice of pickle just didn't cut it. I'll call it a place to say "I ate there". I heard the term before at another place, so I'll use it again, "very hipster"; but being 'hipster' would mean you enjoy panini's. Very small inside with a few tables along the street outside had me thinking this was a good place to eat, but certainly not a 5-Star kind of place; and at 12:30 on a Friday would have me thinking I was going to wait a while for my order. The place just never got really busy, yet we still waited a little long for our food. Seems like anyone who is anyone in downtown Escondido certainly would not pass this place up to eat here just to say you did at the next office party. We have CRAVED these sandwiches since we found this place last month. We were in town for the weekend and happened to find this cute little place on Yelp and decided to check it out! We are so glad we did and we will be back!! We got a half of "The Works" and "Good Day Sunshine". They were both INCREDIBLE. Both were so yummy!!! The Good Day Sunshine I believe is a little newer on their menu & it is AMAZING. Their sunshine sauce, the perfect amount of different cheeses, chicken and everything packs this sandwich. It didn't leave you filling crappy after like some breakfast sandwiches do. It was yummy, filling and so good. The freshly squeezed orange juice was perfect and the fruit was fresh! Honestly this place was one of our favorite places we ate all weekend. Couldn't recommend it anymore! I believe it was the owner who rang us up. I wanted a little less cheese on mine than it usually comes with and he was more than happy to make it the way I needed. Even took off the tomato because I don't like tomatoes!
