Unlike some coffee shops that try to be hip and trendy, this is a homey, intimate, charming, and traditionally styled small café. There are no TVs, couches or sofas--just bistro-style table settings both inside and outside, and a bar by the front store window. You're personally served by the down-to-earth couple-owners. And while I rarely buy a $3 cup of coffee (a comparable Starbucks would be $2), I still believe my frugal nature got its money's worth. That's not because of the coffee itself, but the overall experience. So if you appreciate a welcoming atmosphere that also serves freshly made light chow and brewed-to-your-order coffee, then the Sunny Side Kitchen is your place (a bit of your patience is needed since your coffee won't come from a pre-brewed pot). There are even reading materials to keep one's solitary visit busy. And while parking is street side only, at least the stalls are free and they're close. I didn't give a 5-star review because I think the place is pricey. But you don't come here for value; it's for that "it" factor that says it's okay to spend that kind of money this time. read more

Called in for a GF breakfast panini and quiche at 720 after a long night shift at the hospital down the street. Kate said the quiche would take about 20 mins to heat up and that was not a problem at all for me. Got there at 735 and got my food right at 740! The owners are seriously the cutest couple I've ever met. I love this place and I love their food. You can really tell they love what they do and they make sure that every customer leaves with a smile on their face. I ordered the "works" on GF bread and the quiche. Both came with a fruit cup and were delicious! The bacon was super crispy and the egg was cooked perfectly in my sandwich. Hidden gem for sure! My boyfriend and I love Sunny Side Kitchen. We usually split the California Club sandwich for breakfast. It's more than enough to keep us full till lunchtime. It's a pretty small location and it gets pretty busy in the mornings. Expect to wait 15-20 min to receive your food during busy times, which isn't bad in my opinion. Your food is brought out to you but everything else is pretty much self serve. You grab your own utensils, napkins, cups, water, etc. You can tell it's a family run business, the employees are very friendly and informative. Everything that's wonderful, aka Sunnyside Kitchen, is all that one could hope for in a historic downtown Escondido café. I first encountered the blazingly lovely energy the owners exude at the Yelp Día de los Muertos event where they had a lovely table decorated with pictures of their pops passed and informed me of their delicious organic coffee they said I had to try. I did. I did have to try. I'm oh so glad I did. My dear friend was in town from Pendleton, Or and so we finally made it out to the lovely kitchen that resides in historic Escondido and it was charming and bright as the name. The yellow, the blue, the green, the calm, and the joy. 'Twas busy and yet we were handed our perfectly grilled sandwiches in haste! The coffee was everything I'd hoped for: exquisite. I'm definitely going to purchase a bag as its sold here! I can't remember the brand? Must update upon recollection. The cookies.... Oh the cookies. I'll wait for the cookies any day! Oh my. Another hidden gem! My favorite kind of place-- small, family run, and great food. Located in Escondido on Orange Ave just off Grand. Breakfast and lunch only-- they close at 2:30. Nice varied menu. We had the Cobb salad and one of the panini. Both were delicious. And....they use Bread & Cie. breads; how great is that!!!!! Very friendly staff. Only potential drawback-- very tiny inside (4 2-top tables total) but extra seating out front and in back (?).....not too terrific in hot weather ( this is Escondido after all). Definitely will return, but probably not on a weekend. read more

My wife has Celiac disease which means she cannot have a gram of gluten in her food. Stopped in here for a quick lunch. We were extremely surprised and happy to find such a great place nearby. I had the Tuscan chicken salad and tried the peach Italian soda. It had the perfect amount of flavor and a little whipped cream to top it off. We ordered a dozen of the bite size cookies, and they too were absolutely delicious. Nice small cafe with very lovely staff! However, this is not your typical breakfast place... they only have paninis for breakfast and lunch. Nothing special, and the sandwiches were OK. We did get free cookies after the Yelp check in, and they were pretty good. I also had a White Mocha, and it was not strong enough (single shot in a 12 oz) usually that hits the spot. Seems like the place is more of a hype with 5 stars... but not that great. Y'all should come to the Bay Area and try the 5 start breakfast/brunch/lunch places. read more

Could not be happier with my visit to Sunny Side! A friend and I came for lunch; the food was delicious and everyone was incredibly friendly! The pesto chicken was fantastic; the chicken was juicy and flavorful, the bread was perfectly toasted, soft on the inside with a beautiful crunch on the outside. Well Last week when I went to farmer's market here in Escondido I came across this Lovely and welcoming Place:) I have to say that what I sampled was highly amazing!! I couldn't wait to meet my mom and show her this awesome stand.She like myself tired the cookies and was hooked as well. I know that anytime that I go to farmer's market that I will be definitely restocking on some cookies as well as trying a whole panini this time around.I will be trying and buying the different varieties of cookies that they sell!! I have been to Sunny Side Kitchen a few times now. Whenever we have people in town to visit and want breakfast, we took them there. This mom-and-pop shop is locally owned, and I love how they used the pipes as the shelf. This place gives you a warm and welcoming vibe. I have tried The Works, Avocado, Egg and Cheese, Grilled Cheese and Tuscan Panini. They were all good just depends on what kind of mood that you were in. =) For breakfast paninis, you get half a panini and a cup of fruit, which was the right amount of food. Don't forget to order their gourmet coffee! If you are a coffee lover that you will appreciate the cup they brew. They are passionate about using great ingredients in the food, and you can taste it. They even inspire me to purchase a Panini machine that I can make my own paninis. The place is always clean, and they provide a friendly service. High quality food. I never give ratings but I'm currently eating the meatloaf panini and chicken bacon ranch panini and can't not. This place is such a gem, we come here at least once or twice a month. The staff is always so friendly. Their drinks are great and I love the strawberry Italian cream soda.
