We arrived on a Sunday afternoon after a drive from South Florida to grab some lunch. Not a lot of seating available, so we grabbed a seat on the bench outside and were seated within 10 minutes. They have indoor and about 3 tables outside. I ordered a Bloody Mary with a Lox platter. The lox plate was delish with goat cheese instead of traditional cream cheese. The salmon is home cured and tasted fresh. My husband ordered the open faced omelette (he is doing Keto) and gave me his potato pancake. This is a Hungarian family run cafe, and the side of potato pancakes reminded me of the European culture. The parking and where to find the building is slightly confusing at first.. I remember thinking when I found myself going around the apartments, confused as to where my gps was taking me. However, we found it! Inside is bright and set up like a comfy diner, you see the cooks right at the line in front of you so that is really cool! The waitstaff was attentive and helpful. I tried the lobster eggs Benedict and my boyfriend had the scallop risotto. The lobster EB was very good, the lobster was slightly over cooked but so delicious, the English muffins the asparagus all very yummy! My boyfriend loved his scallop risotto, I thought the seasoning was a little too intense. All in all I want to go back and try more items on the menu! Not a great experience. My brother and I came. Started off when we wanted to sit at one of three empty 4-tops. They said no, we had to sit at a 2-top. Owner or manager said, "we need to keep these open for when 4 people come in." That told me they put profits over the customers who give them the profits. By the way two of the 4-tops stayed empty the entire time we were there. In addition, I asked for "over medium" eggs and got over hard. My brother asked for "over very light" and got over medium. There was only one piece of cold hard unbuttered toast, not the customary two pieces of toast you get everywhere else. The only potato option was a potato pancake neither of us liked and I couldn't eat my sausage because it tasted weird and I love all kinds of sausage. One of my favorite things to get anywhere. Landing at SRQ an hour late, my client picked me up and suggested this small cafe for a quick bite before heading to the office. Ten minutes later we pulled into an apartment complex - Oakridge with a small Sunnyside Cafe sign - quaint!?! After venturing into this smallish 10 - 12 tables and a standard bar we were seated at a smallish table for two. The menu offered a wide variety of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner at reasonable prices. The variety spoke of something foreign...European? Waitress confirmed they were from Hungary and Europe...ah ha, that explained the pork chop and eggs, Hungarian Potato Soup...topped off for dinner with Bone Marrow. The coffee could have been stronger in this oddly comfortable hidden gem...but, it kept coming even past our smallish meal which had turned into our "European" meeting. The atmosphere and staff carried on while we worked away until we were informed they would be closing to get ready for dinner at 3...and...if we paid in cash there would be a discount...needless to say, Sunnyside has become a go-to ritual every trip to Sarasota. Since writing my initial review, I have come to this restaurant many times including bringing out of town guests. The owner is the chef and makes delicious food for all three meals and I have noticed some Hungarian choices that I hope to try soon! We have actually only dined her for breakfast which is consistently delicious!! The eggs Benedict is the best I have ever had and they have several choices for which to choose. My husband most often has the lobster roll. If you have any family members who are vegan there are several unique choices for them as well!! You can sit inside or outside. The food is made with fresh quality ingredients. I had the Hungarian Goulash Soup. It is a large enough serving and will be your meal!
