Was finally able to make it back to the Sunnyside Grill for breakfast and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! I couldn't imagine their breakfast offerings being better, or even as good as, their hamburgers. I was actually pretty bummed I couldn't just get another hamburger. After going over the menu I decided on what I suppose Sunnyside is famous for..the Smelvin. What it is is a bunch of Breakfast meats (bacon, sausage, ham, etc.) in a skillet mixed together on top of Eggs. Homefries, and Cheddar Cheese..and..it's just as good and crazy as it sounds. The flavors all melded together so nicely. The homefries were hearty, mixed with the crispness of bacon and smoky flavor of breakfast sausage..then all covered in cheese. It was so good. A heart attack in a skillet yes..but soooo good. I ordered a small and it was waaay more than enough for one person. I honestly can't even imagine who could eat a large..or how many people it could feed. The waitress suggested topping it with hot sauce and I turned it down..but I kind of wish I hadn't. It would have given it just enough heat and spice..that would've been great. Alas, maybe next time. So yeah, Sunnyside Grill is two for two in my book so far. Next up..."grandpas diaper". I stopped into Sunnyside grill with my mom and son on a Sunday afternoon and the place was crowded as usual. We found a booth and we were waited on after about 5 minutes which wasn't too bad of a wait considering the amount of people in the restaurant. The restaurant is your average diner, nothing special to speak of, but the food is good and the portions are large. For the price you can't go wrong. I've been here several times and the only thing that can be inconsistent is the wait staff. Sometimes the service is great and other times I'm waiting 10 minutes to get the next refill of my coffee. On this occasion though, the service was very good. They ran out of hotcakes so my son decided on the French toast kid's meal. It was good and he was happy which made me happy because it only cost me $5 and it came with a drink too. My mom and I ordered breakfast and it came out hot and well cooked. Ordered my eggs over medium and that was exactly what I received. Not always the case with eggs. The goetta was good as was the sausage I tried. Overall I find the Sunnyside grill to be a good local alternative to a place like Bob Evan's or Perkins. I would prefer to support the local owners so I'd recommend a visit if you are ever on the west side of Cincinnati. -- updating my review since I returned again today. Finally got to try the Delhi location today and it lives up to it's sister restaurant off 128. The food was soooo good and the portions are HUGE!! I watched them bring out other peoples food and they certainly don't skimp!! They have a great menu something for everyone. The price is fair and the food was hot. The servers were the best and they work hard to please you. Will have to come back there were soo many choices. I am pretty picky pain if you ask my hubby and don't give lots of places 5 stars but this restaurant lived up to it!!! read more

Great old fashioned "*greasy spoon" restaurant tucked away in Taylor Creek (just east of Maimitown) Food is simple burgers, double deckers and breakfast options. Service is very good and people are very friendly... Meal portions are unbelievable, so bring your appetite.... Boxes are needed to take out what you cannot finish... Mine today was the ham&cheese double Decker. It is so tall I could not get my hand awoind it.... So thick, it was difficult to cut up... If you are a regular, there is probably lots to love about this place. Unfortunately, the place seems to be hostile to outsiders! Today was my family's second visit in a month. The first time, we showed up after 10. The menu does not indicate a time-frame for certain items, other than no pancakes after 11. My wife ordered a burger, and I ordered an "Old Man's Dirty Diaper." But they were out of chili, so I opted for a "Smelvin Wrap." Overall, the food was good. My son had a pancake that was burnt on the bottom, but they replaced it. We left a 20% tip. This morning, I ordered the "Old Man's Dirty Diaper" again. It is advertised as regular and waffle fries covered in fried chicken strips, fried hot dog, ground beef, chili, jalapenos, bacon, cheese, and ranch. I took a couple bites, and noticed no chicken. I started digging through my plate for the chicken. No dice. As I was telling the server, I noticed there were no hot dogs, either - but she had already left. She returned with a plate of a chopped chicken strip, and told me everything was included properly the first time, but "here are some extra pieces of chicken." No. Everything was NOT there the first time. I had no hot dogs, either. I did not like the idea that I was being given something "extra," when two major ingredients in my dish were missing. And I didn't appreciate the attitude. I asked that she take it back, and I decided not to eat. The attitude coming from the kitchen soured me, and I didn't want to risk ordering something from a potentially pissed-off owner/cook. A few minutes later, we see three servers behind the register (not in the kitchen out of site) digging through my returned plate, huddled up in some kind of meeting, as if they are analyzing the veracity of my claims. I thought that was weird. We could not hear what they whispered to each other. A bit later, someone else stops at the table to ask if everything is good. "Not really," I answer honestly, and that's when things get weird. This other server starts an argument with us. It started with the passive-aggressive non-apology of "I'm sorry you feel that way," instead of "I'm sorry your dish was not correct." Then we got a lecture about how the place is family-owned, and the owners work in the kitchen, and how they said my dish was fine. I'm feeling pretty offended at this point. I'm not sure why anyone would send back a properly prepared dish with all the expected ingredients. But this server then got a bit personal. She told us that last time we visited, my wife ordered a burger before 11am, and they don't sell burgers before 11am, but the server allowed us even though it made her uncomfortable, or something. First, the menu does not make any mention of this fact. (I've been to plenty of other hole-in-the-wall spots that serve burgers all day.) But second, why in the world am I hearing this? I'm basically being chastised for ordered the wrong thing at the wrong time several weeks prior. Now I'm sitting in a restaurant, getting lectured by a server about how I should not have ordered what I did last time. Why? Because they sent me incomplete food and then wanted to yell at me about it? Tired of being yelled at by a server, I started asking her to please leave us alone. She wouldn't. She kept arguing basically with herself, while I'm asking her to please just leave us alone. That's when she says that if we don't like it we don't need to ever come back. This is so far afield of basic customer service I don't even know what to say. I'm not sure how being a family-owned restaurant has anything to do with treating people so poorly. They may be a family owned business, but I'm a family, and I work hard to take my wife and kids out on the weekends. Even though I sent my food back, I was out 30 bucks for the burger my wife lost an appetite for, a waffle with eggs, and some drinks. I have never felt so personally attacked and offended because I expected to be given the food that I ordered in a restaurant. read more

Good old greasy spoon. Enjoyed their never frozen half pound Angus southwest burger. It was really good. The onion rings on it were amazing. Food portions are huge. Visited the Sunnyside Grill for the first time this morning. It's a classic, American "greasy spoon" joint. Super friendly people. A table full of 8 guys talking politics, black coffee and an American flag on the wall. After reading the menu, The Smelvinator was the obvious choice. A blanket of biscuits, smothered in Goetta, sausage, bacon, ham, melted cheese and topped with country gravy! OMG! Friendly server took pity on me and only gave me the small Smelvinator! Purposefully avoided coming to our table after I asked two times for my coffee, and for toast that was actually toasted with butter on it. Had to eventually get up and get my own condiments too from another table. After I waved to waitress several times and she said she'd be right over. Don't come here expecting a First Watch or Panera type breakfast experience. Definitely a greasy spoon diner type atmosphere straight out of the 1960s. It was very clean, though, which isn't always the case with these kinds of places. We did have to wait a bit to be served. Waitress was apologetic but seemed very frazzled. I get it- they do not have easy jobs. Food was AMAZING. Seriously, I would come here every day if I lived in the area just for the breakfast burger and waffle fries. Actually, it is probably good I DON'T live nearby for that exact reason! We came here because a few of my coworkers recommended them for the food and large portions. I was told they have great breakfast and burgers, so we came for breakfast to try it out. The place is always packed when we drive by and we were lucky to snag a table at our visit because it was very busy. The portions are very large but the food is pretty blah. The server told us we were unable to customize an omelette (just wanted to eliminate a veggie) because they were too busy on weekends and premixed all the veggies. Kind of disappointing and doesn't make sense when there are people out there with food allergies, etc. I opted for a different omelette Instead and it was OK. Nothing to write home about. If you are looking for a HOT, fresh, and BIG burger, look no further than the Sunnyside Grill. When I say hot, I mean HOT. The first bite almost burned my mouth. Steam could be seen pouring out of my first bite. Specialty burgers are composed of whopping 12oz. patties. The patties looked to be hand formed. The menu says that the beef is never frozen. I ordered the Bourbon Burger. The sweet bourbon glaze went well with the two slices of tangy Swiss cheese. The grilled red onions, and mushrooms rounded out the burger nicely. I thought I took a picture. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be on my phone. My husband had The Cardinal. That is the burger picture I posted. His was also piping hot. He seemed to really enjoy it. All specialty burgers come with a side of potato chips. The produce on my daughter's kids burger looked crisp, and fresh. Her meal came with a side of fries. I tried one, and they were decent. I would be interested in trying other items on the menu. If you are going during peak hours, except to wait a while for your food. If on a lunch break,you may want to call in a To-go order. It is a small kitchen. They seemed to be working hard to get the food out as quickly as possible, while still maintaining quality. Our waitress apologized a couple of times for the wait. Looking for a local dive on the westside? Head on down to Sunnyside. It's nothing special, but it's convenient for me and there's enough variety on the menu to satisfy most people's needs. First off, if you like double deckers... you will LOVE Sunnyside. These suckers are HUGE!!! I mean seriously, I don't think I've ever in my life seen such a large sandwich. I don't know how people fit it in their mouth. Don't even try to order the double double decker unless you want lunch meat for a week! FOOD FOR THOUGHT... sometimes I do order the monster. I bet there is over a pound of meat on these things. My kids like the taste of them and we take home what we don't finish, pitch the bread, and put it in a ziploc and make a fresh sandwich daily with the leftovers. Besides the double deckers, they offer burgers, pork tenderloin sandwiches, wraps, fried chicken sanwiches, steaks, hot dogs, soup, chili (3-ways and coneys too), and daily specials. They've also been pretty good making up something not on the menu as long as they have the ingredients. In the mood for breakfast? They've got that too and you can order it any time. If you go for breakfast / brunch on a Sunday morning be prepared for a pretty packed house. Sunnyside just recently started a small delivery area with a minimum $15 purchase. They can also cater your event. Closed on Mondays. They close at 8 during the week. Saturday and Sunday they close at 2. Kid friendly. Grandparent friendly. And 3 satellite tv's if you can't miss your CNN or ESPN updates. If you're looking to try out something different, give Sunnyside a shot. I am a fan of dive locale, and this place was no exception. A friend told us to go because my stomach was throwing a fit and ready to kick my butt. If I didn't feed it soon, my Hulk SMASH was going to come out, so we high tailed it on over there to the Sunnyside Grill. When you walk in you don't know what to expect. It's a small little place and you sit where you'd like. The menus are already down on the table. You just thumb through and pick your meal to your heart... err stomach's content. Now, my eyes are usually ALWAYS bigger than my stomach, and on the day wen went to Sunnyside, that got me in trouble. I ordered the chicken fried chicken, which came with mashed potatoes, gravy and two slices of bread. As soon as the plate of bread hit the table I inhaled it. I mean if I could have digested it through my nostrils I probably would have, but alas our bodies don't work that way. So instead I plucked it from my nostrils and crammed it into my mouth hole instead. I mean it was nothing special, just your average bread from a good old bag. But I was hungry so it worked out. The boyfriend ordered some monstrosity of a "breakfast sandwich" and I wanted a side of goetta after some thought. When our food came out I thought they made a mistake... Is that ONE meal on this plate??? Are you serious??? I think I could have fed a small country with all the food piled on that plate! We almost needed 4 doggie bags to take home the food we couldn't eat! It was crazy.. and more importantly delicious. The prices were great for all that food. I was in shock for a few days after seeing all that food, but hey it was worth it. The Goetta is the best I've EVER had, and that says something right there. Great brunch! Large servings. The small smelvin is a delicious mix of breakfast meats (gotta, ham, sausage, bacon) with cheese, home fried potatoes. I could only eat a quarter of it, so I'd hate to see the large! Delicious! The BLT my son had looked enticing! They also have a gotta GLT, I will have to try. Love this place. My first time being here and I can't wait to go back. I love the atmosphere, it reminds me of the diners I used to go to as a kid. They do breakfast and lunch here so they keep weird hours. Their selection of burgers is awesome taking up a full page with 3 columns and each one is different.
