This was the first place I came to eat indoors since the beginning of the pandemic . It was post breakfast rush so I was well taken care of by the servers . I ordered an egg white omelet with an English muffin . The omelet was to perfection . The coffee I had on the side was also very good , sometimes coffee from diners can be just average . Came here after I searched Yelp for good quality affordable food. Wow, was I impressed. Foot fresh. Streak well cooked. Still pink, not overcooked, not undercooked. Place very clean, including bathrooms. Waitress very friendly. Extremely reasonable prices. Ps don't tell your friends before it becomes too popular. My Dad and I get together every Friday and go either hiking or birding. And both of us like finishing up our weekly adventure with a hearty breakfast at a good diner. We recently visited the Sunrise Diner, a busy place in need of a facelift on the main drag in Roselle Park. They do breakfast quite well here. Great omelets and home fries, well done of course. Good coffee. The rye toast, unfortunately, while righteously buttered, was break your teeth hard. The food came out quickly with a smile. My Dad thought it was one of the best diners we have visited. Thirty years ago this diner, then known as the Midas Touch, was about the best restaurant dinner we could afford. We were living in a basement apartment in Elizabeth and really struggling to get by. We came here because the price-value was extraordinary, and the food was very good-- particularly the veal porterhouse and swordfish dinners. In the years since, we've moved a few times and have (fortunately) improved our economic condition. The Sunrise Diner has been an occasional stop when I'm on Westfield Ave. The clientele are quite a bit older, on average, and the service remains adequate. Breakfasts and lunch sandwiches and salads are predictably good. Our old mainstay, the multi-course dinners, are still offered and their prices remain reasonable. While I've only had one dinner here recently, I'm sorry to say that it wasn't very good. I'll try again, in the hope of rekindling the memory of when this place was "ours." read more

I have been going to this diner since I moved to Roselle Park (almost 4 years ago) and I have no complaints. They have a good variety, the food is fresh, the service is fast, and the staff is friendly. Because I've become a regular, the staff recognizes when we arrive. :) I will have to agree that the customers tend to be older but not all the time. It depends on what day/time you go. This is usually the case for dinner time on the weekdays. It is normally a mixed age group for breakfast. Right after "Hurricane Sandy", the Sunrise Diner was one of the only restaurants that were open on Westfield Avenue and the line was literally out the door. I will strongly recommend their chocolate chip pancakes. They're one of my favorites. UPDATE: I came to Sunrise Diner for breakfast about 2 weeks ago. I ordered French toast with a side of scrambled eggs and a coffee. The French toast was just as good as it always was (one of my favorite foods on the menu) ... until I found a hair on my plate. Diners in Jersey are a dime a dozen, so it takes a lot for one to stand up and be recognized. Unfortunately, Sunrise falls just short of that. I'm new to the area, and this is the local diner to me - so local, in fact, that I walk past it often. I decided to take a friend here for a quick, cheap dinner before we hit up a pub for some drinking. As usual, I ordered a tuna melt. I judge diners based on their prep of my favorite dishes, and tuna melts are up there. It was underwhelming. The tuna was lumped in the middle of the bread, not spread evenly on top of it. The cheese was barely melted. And there was no tomato? I understand not all diners include tomato on their tuna melts, but I'm usually asked or notified about it. Because who doesn't put tomato on their tuna melt? I was particularly hungry that evening, and was also excited to try their cole slaw. I have a new appreciation for the little sides that come with your diner meal - Huck Finn in Union has the best pasta salad you could ask for. But not only did my coleslaw not come out at all, there was also no pickle! Anyway, like I said before - this is local to me so I will be going back, many times, in the future. I had lunch there today, ordered Decaf and Regular Milk, a Turkey Burger with sauteed onions on a bun and Salad Bar. The Burger was outstanding, and the Salad Bar was fresh, crisp and clean, with plenty of choices. Even the Decaf Coffee was great, it tasted like French Roast! For those interested: the food is always well prepared and clean at the Sunrise, the waitresses are friendly, responsive and rapid, the coffee and drinks are great, the Early Bird Dinner Specials (from 3-5 weekdays) are very low price, under $10 and include unlimited Salad Bar, sides, unlimited rolls and butter and bread, and a nice dessert, are superior quality and delicious as well as healthy preparation! Frankly, there may be many diners in NJ, but the one everyone who eats there love is the Sunrise Diner! And frankly, everyone who eats there comes back, some many times per week. Food as good as Mom made.. About the only problem is that so many people love the place, it can be hard to find a parking spot even though they have a huge lot, but not to worry, there's plenty of street parking and other lots in the area. My parents went here all the time when they were young - I'm glad to see Sunrise Diner is still going strong! My waitress was very nice too. I came here about an hour before closing so I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and service! This use to be one of my favorite diners. I would go there every Sunday after church, until recently. I went on Saturday morning, the waitress was very rude and short when speaking with me. When she returned with the food, she slammed the food on the table and walked away. I spoke to the manager, who apologized for her behavior. I was then advised that the waitress does not like waiting on Hispanic, African Americans or Jews. I have been passing this diner for many years. Now i know why we and no one i know has been there. My wife and I went yesterday to grab something quick as we hadn't eaten all day. First we were greeted with "go ahead and grab some menus and seat yourself" from the hostess. We ordered our food and waited what seemed to be a long time for a almost empty diner. We had ordered a fried ravioli appetizer and when it came out we thought they weren't cooked all the way but then realized they had jalapeños in them. Never had a jalapeño fried ravioli before. Glad we are able to handle some heat. We sent that back and then finally got the rest of our food. It wasn't the worst but definitely not the best either. Fast forward to 4am and the food poisoning has set in and now lasted for 7 hours so far. If you like mediocre food and service with a side of full time bathroom breaks then this is the place for you! read more

I love this diner. I just got an order to go. i got 2 egg's over, well done home fries and bacon. I called it in and it was ready in 15 minutes. The place was very busy too. The food is just perfect! When you ask for well done home fries, they are actually well done :) I want to add, they just got a lottery machine. I thought this was going to be one stop shopping this am. ah not so much. The staff is new to the machine and it did not work out so well. When I play, I choose a number and play it 10x's. The gal put all 10 bet's on one ticket. I tried it again and this time the straight and box were on different tickets, but 10 on each ticket. I gave up and went to 711 for lottery. I started going here a couple of months ago. I was first served by Nando. He is an excellent server very attentive and you don't have to tell him more then once they way you like stuff. Normally from 3-5 they have 9.95 specials. There is a wide variety of specials, but my favorite is the fresh ham your choice of potato, veggie and soup. Also comes with salad bar and dessert. I also get the meat lovers omelette being diabetic I ask for sliced tomato, wheat bread and sour cream...Guess what no problem. It's not 5 star dining, but you get plenty of food at a reasonable price and they make you feel like you're dining at home with family. read more

When waiting for your food at Sunrise Diner (Roselle Park, New Jersey), do you ever wonder how it's being handled despite the food being delicious or not? (chances are probably not because either you're on the phone or with company right?!) Are they wearing gloves? Do they wash their hands prior to placing your food on the table in front of you? Do they wear hairnets so the food is free of hair? After going from one table to the next, touching the computers menu's and door's as well their writing pads and pens and grabbing the tips (bacteria), well it's time to go make the toast, right! Would you like White, Rye or Whole Wheat? buttered or dry? Guess what?! After all that, they're making your toast bare handed and hands not washed! They don't wear gloves to handle your food, PERSONALLY WATCHING these servers touch your food and rearrange it on the plates ALSO BAREHANDED and not have a single care in the world about it is incredible! So next time you think about going out to eat a decent meal, be by yourself or with family and friend's, Think twice about how your food is being handled before being brought to your table!! Refunds aren't going to refund you potentially getting sick due to the lack of proper food handling and the extreme amount of bacteria being transferred!! I read the reviews and I believe they may have had merit, I had the same issues, the previous owners have returned and all seems well. Over the years I have visited the restaurant. It had it's "off years" when the owners sold the restaurant. Apparently the people who bought it had no idea of how to operate a restaurant. My review would have been similar to those nasty reviews but I was told by a friend to try it. I told him you have to be kidding but he wanted to go there so I went kicking and screaming (silently). I was amazed. I was told the people who were buying the restaurant could not make a go of it. Apparently the customers wanted good food and service at a good price. Those people are no longer connected with the restaurant as they could not live on the reputation of the former owners who are back. The food is good and plentiful. They have a salad bar, it is not a buffet. The service is diner. The atmosphere is Diner. You will not get five star service or meals that hardly fill a plate at twice the costs of Diner food such as sold in a "fine dining establishment"..it is a Jersey diner. You will get Diner, a lot of good food at a reasonable price from Jersey servers (need I say more about the servers you will find them only in Jersey) . Jersey servers will take four or five tables at a time and unless you find an occasional "happy waitress" the only "happy waitress" is a special on the menu. The servers are friendly or they do not last long. They do not bite unless they are eating there dinner on lunch break. But I go to a Diner for the (diner) food, the (diner) "atmosphere" and the (diner) service. This is New Jersey and you just cannot find a Jersey diner when you cross the Hudson river or the Delaware river or the New York border to the north. Why not five stars? They have specials and, wouldn't you know it, they run out just before I get there. I have to order another selection but I had my taste buds set for what I missed. The second selection would have been my first selection on another night, but I am not often disappointed even with the second selection. read more

I am a resident of roselle park for 30 years. I've been going to the diner at least once a week for the past year. I order veal parmigiana 10.95,and ask them to add shrimp. I get on avg 4 maybe 5 shrimp and get charged 8$....so today i said something...i never really paid attention before as its always been part of a bigger bill. I was told well if u order shrimp parmigiana and add veal it would only be 4$ more...i.e 14.95 rather then the 18.95. You also get more shrimp added the mgr named nick. So i was like can u change my order ,was told no. So got charged yet again for less. God knows how many other shady things they do ...or as nick claims..its the computer...but yet he knew a more fair deal...im pissed cause i was a long time customer,and feel burned ... If thats how they treat there loyal clients,just think how they screw over everyone else. read more

Customer Service is very important to me, and with that I will say that this place was pretty ok :-) The Salad Bar, food and overall service was far better than another diner that I will never go to again (colosseum-linden). I've been going here off and on as I have with many other places, and it does seem to be a spot where the elderly like to frequent. nothing wrong with that. There is one waitress, not sure if she's still there, that I'd prefer to not have as my/our waitress. The rest-are customer friendly without letting their personal issues interfere with good service. A N.J diner is an average, nothing too special experience, (I've been to 1 diner out of state and oh my was the food so tasty!) but at least this diner does not pick and choose which customer is worthy of getting a regular take out container, when they are "running low" instead of tiny ones. I have eaten at this diner many times I have always had a pleasent meal.Unfortunaty this past time was an exception.After dinner we were asked if we wanted containers for our left overs. at that time we said yes and also proceeded to order 2 more diners to go. Upon recieving the bill there was a charge for each container used to transport the meals 75 cents apiece. there a)should have had previous notice 2)just a little said considering they were made or styroform .Ipitty the guy who believe it is free delivery and than sees his bill. They definitely jack up their prices during the weekends, I could even hear a waitress talking about it. The kids meals were supposed to come with milk and ice cream but we ended up being charged for the milk (2.75 for the small glass pictured) and we were not offered the ice cream. Basically spent the same amount as the meal as we did the drinks that were supposed to be included. This diner is cheap in the sense that they will try to jip you over everything.
