I ordered drunken noodles with chicken to go, when I got home I found it was the wrong order. I received a meal with tofu and rice instead. I called saying that I received the wrong order and the person on the phone told me that I could not get my order unless I paid for it again. This is terrible service and I will not be back ever. There are plenty of other Thai food restaurants near by that do not treat their customers this way. Great service...I cannot complain about the food or the service. However, my complaint...The open hours are posted on the door and I have been by here for the last 2 Saturdays and the time posted is 12:00 noon opening. 1st time I arrived at 1:20pm Lights out & Doors locked. 2nd time (today) I arrived 1:00pm with Lights out & Doors locked. On both occasions, there were people waiting in the parking lot, but got tired and left. I wonder if they know they are losing business on this mishap? Not sure, but I may try once more on a Saturday, and that will my 3rd swing. HMMMM???? Not very good for business folks. UPDATE Added 1 star: Saturday afternoon, 3pm...closed and locked doors BUT AT LEAST someone changed the sign on the door. There are new opening hours for Saturday, 4:00 pm. I believe my faith in humanity and Thai food may have been restored today. My romance with Thai food can FINALLY re-commence!!!! Hear the drunken noodle angels sing!! This is one of those places I've driven by 1000 times (I seem to do this a lot) and never noticed it was there. As soon as I saw Sunny Thai -Madison Hts I was like "Huuhhhhhh?" As regular readers of mine know, Pi's Thai in Hazel Park WAS the good shit for a long time... But, the awesome cook making it that way left and moved on up and now I believe owns Penn's Thai Kitchen (don't quote me) ....I did a scathing review of how I think Pi's is doing now and it's shitty. Since then, I really kind of lost my oomph for Thai, with the only other good one I know of being over at 12 and Hoover, Amarin Thai, which is still a fave of mine. So seeing this little gem pop up on this list, and being 1/2 mile away from my work, I HAD to try it!! The place is really clean and there are a few tables for eating in. The menu is pretty big, with lots and lots to choose from starting with traditional, soups, (even pho!!) then with noodles, rice, curry and fish specialties. I went lame and got the drunken noodle medium... asked if they could do shrimp AND scallops and for $2.00 they could so it was the dinner price. No biggie. I also got 2 spring rolls. This shit is legit!!! The spring rolls were crispy and full of yummy veggies and chicken, and the plum sauce is AMAZING.. not the shit you see everywhere, but real yellow, thick, delicious plum sauce!! The noodles were great too!! Nice amount of heat and lots of food!! While I was waiting the younger guy and girl were super friendly!! I asked about the "no credit under $10" which I read in a few other reviews and he said they really don't do that anymore since so many people use plastic, but they were doing it to keep the credit machine company costs down. I can dig it. So, now that I've done the ole standby so to speak and it was great, I can't wait to get back in there and try some of the more exotic fare... As far as pricing, again with the whiners.... $9 or $10 for a dinner which easily feeds 2... I don't understand people griping it's too high... no it's not!! This place is relatively close to my house, so I picked up some lunch on my way to the office. Unfortunately, I happened to place my order right before the health inspector showed up to perform her semi-annual inspection. No, she didn't find anything egregious. (Why yes, I DID strain my ears to listen!!) But her presence slowed things down to a bare crawl. A carry out order that should have taken 10-15 minutes to fill took a solid 30. But I can't blame Sunny Thai for this. As a consolation prize for the wait, I was given a complimentary bowl of soup and beverage. They definitely score points for that. Even after driving 20 minutes to my office, the food was still piping hot. The food was tasty, although it could have used a bit more sauce. The spring rolls were fresh. This place is open reasonably late during the week and the food is decent. It is a bit more expensive when compared to the Thai places nearby but not a deal breaker. I wish they had lunch combo meals similar to Thai Star. If they had this, I'd probably come more often. The food I do order is always prepared quickly and in general is very tasty. I think the spice level is a bit on the higher side. I ordered Pad Se We medium last night and it was quite spicy, which I'm o.k. with but worth noting. You can easily drive by this place and not know it. It is small, but since I rarely have any time, well actually I never have time to eat out, I ordered to go. Always friendly people there, food is cheaper than your standard Thai place in the area. Flavors are there, curry noodles are my favorite, wonton soup is up there as well. The Royal Oak area has several Thai restaurants... the problem, none are overwhelmingly awesomte. And that's disappointing, since I love Thai and would happily eat it multiple times per week if there were some better options. THat being said, cross the border into Madison Heights, and you'll find a better option. Sunny Thai is not amazing, but it is good Thai food at a fair price. The portions I have received actually tend to vary, but usually they are large. The last order I got, the requested heat seemed to be a bit off. The spiciest was the dish ordered mild, meanwhile the 2 medium dishes were almost no spice. That being said, mostly good flavor across the board. Solid service, good presentation. Only thing I ever had and was not impressed with was the Fresh Rolls. Way too much cilantro stalk and not much else. It was weird. Went there on a Saturday at 5:30pm, and we were the only ones in there. I went here based on other ppls reviews, it was my first visit. The food was decent, but nothing special. We had the Tom Yam? soup, it was good, not my fave. I had a curry noodle dish & my b.f. had a meat-loaded veggie lo mein. It was okay. My curry noodle was delicious and large. The meat-loaded lo mein was on the smaller size. I probably won't go out of my way to hit this place up again. It was a lil pricey for my liking too.
