I am a lifetime fan of Sunset Grill! This has been my favorite place to eat on trips to Three Lakes since I was a kid and is still a go-to today. I absolutely love stopping by for breakfast, since they have so many awesome menu options! Technically, you can get to this place by car, boat, snowmobile, or plane! How cool is that?! On my most recent visit in July of 2020, I got the same high quality food and service I've always experienced here with increased safety standards in place. Staff are masked, tables are spaced out or left empty, and the door and windows are open if it's nice out! I finally ordered the Alaskan waffle (I always want to, but usually end up sticking with my favorite French toast) and it was amazing! It's extremely sweet and I'm glad that I enjoyed it toward the end of brunch instead of super early in the morning, but it was definitely worth it. My husband ordered a medium rare steak. Unlike most restaurants, this was a thick steak. Breakfast steaks at other restaurants seem to be thin. The eggs were perfect, the steak was perfectly cooked and the hashbrowns we tender on the inside and golden brown on the outside! Perfect! Our waitress was nice and had a sense of humor. Great experience. Our airbnb for the next two weeks is just up the road. We will be back. read more

I'm am terribly distressed to see this long time establishment hit the skids. We pulled up at 8:15 am and most of the parking spaces were open. I told my wife that something drastically wrong had taken place. There were about two or three tables occupied by customers, which was very unusual. There were two or three dirty tables and more staff than I've ever seen in a restaurant, but they didn't seem to be doing anything. I ordered steak and eggs and American fries and everything was absolutely without any taste or seasoning. I ordered eggs over easy and they came out over medium with a broken yolk, not a big deal, but it just adds to the laundry list of things that are substandard. The waitress had to be asked to refill an empty coffee cup. Someone other than the waitress came by and asked how everything was and I told her that it was horrible. It was without taste without flavor without seasoning. I noticed there were at least three people working in the back. I've never seen a small restaurant so overstaffed. read more

This place does not disappoint with freshly made awesome breakfast items! Pancakes were fluffy and stuffed with cream cheese and topped with (canned fruits unfortunately) but the blueberries are wild so that made up for it! Could have done without the canned strawberries though. Eggs Benedict Florentine was just what I was hoping for! On a bed of fresh spinach, perfectly cooked egg on top of slab of ham. Hollandaise sausage was just right and not sour at all. No WiFi but the lake view and boats sailing in have that country fresh and relaxing atmosphere that you didn't miss WiFi. I've heard that Bill and Karen no longer own this establishment, but the menu and the food are still the same. It does look like they may have some creative items on the menu, but everything I have had here over the years has been adequate and unexciting. I had to wait a long time for my food. I was able to see at least two people on the line in the kitchen. They also had at least one dish person and I saw another person for a total of four people. It was busy and I did not mind the wait. I'm just letting you know what my experience was on this particular visit. An ice cream shop is attached and at times this season it has been open until nine PM. It was surprising to see at least one negative comment about the boat docking facilities. I looked and thought the facilities were adequate. Pine Isle is preferred ; however, due to the fact that not many places are available on the Three Lakes Chain by boat, I still think it is worth a try. Great view - we have been here many many times. They (like all places) are short staffed. We knew we'd wait. But the food was bad. Really bad. Lukewarm fries and onion rings. Fish sandwich on a cold ciabatta bun with a cold slice of American cheese that didn't even melt on either of our sandwiches so that shows the temp of the thin over breaded fish. Given we patiently waited over an hour (new computer ordering system) we at least thought hot/edible food. No ice tea refills even though seated at the counter. What a big mess and waste of $30. So disappointing. Two hours for our party of 4 to be served lunch that was not as ordered. Burger/patty melts were greasy and burned (over cooked), roast beef sandwich arrived with green peppers (ordered without). Au jus and salad dressing arrived after a reminder. Flatware followed. Kettle chips are not made in house - could be purchased at any grocery store. Manager or person who seemed to be in change didn't ever come over, seemed more interested in sitting/ talking at the bar than helping customers. We recently had lunch and breakfast at Sunset Grill and we were very happy with the food and service! I love the new changes that has been made with the restaurant and we especially enjoyed Mae who is the new Manager! she makes you feel welcome! My daughter, her twin girls (age 4) and I had breakfast at Sunset this morning--Nov 12, 2021. The young man who seated us and then waited on us was awesome! Our party consisted only of 4 and he easily could have seated us at a table--which is small for big breakfast plates and numerous side plates, but he took us to a roomy booth: perfect for two wiggly 4 year olds. Food came fast--was delicious. Those Belgian Waffles are to die for. We requested two plates for the girls to split a chocolate chip pancake--no problem. Our waiter was attentive, but not a nuisance. He was friendly and accommodating. I do wish they were open more often, but do understand the predicament most restaurants are in in the area with the lack of help. Wow - just called this restaurant to give them a heads up, and time the arrival for our large party. The woman who answered the phone was the RUDEST person I've ever encountered calling a restaurant. After being told there wasn't enough room at the time, I explained we'd be willing to wait and/or sit at separate tables. She raised her voice and asked me "what don't you understand?" I told her that with attitude like that, we wouldn't want to go there anyway. Coming out of a pandemic you'd think a restaurant would be chomping at the bit to pull in a big tab...not this place. While the food was great. Not worth the hour wait. If I could afford it, I'd purchase the place and have an outdoor patio! Many boaters have dogs and would greatly benefit from the outdoor patio! Six of us went for dinner last Sunday evening and everyone left very full and happy. Whiskey BBQ pulled pork and Whiskey BBQ hamburger we're very good. Very good sides of thin cut steak fries and large onion rings were very good. Seating was quick and service was spot on. All food came out in a reasonable time and everyone ate together. We were party of five on May 23,we had reservations for inside,we were unable to dine inside after being seated at a dirty table ,no windows were open and we were told air conditioning was not working. We asked to be seated outside,the temp was 92 and we were told we could not put umbrella up,we had no choice but to leave. Obviously customer does not come first,and don't even try to please. My father and I and a couple of his friends visited Sunset Grill and the service and food was awesome. I had the fried steak and eggs and it was awesome. The atmosphere is nice and the staff does a great job offering expedient service in a busy environment. The Sunset Grill is right on the water and the atmosphere is cool, eclectic, and with a North Woods appeal. I would recommend this to my family and friends. Poor service but the food was good. Spoke to one of the owners wives who said that the wait staff was still learning a new system. Poor excuse for bad service. Our waitress was very uneducated about what kind of drinks were available. (Her first night) One of the owners sat at a table next to us and didn't seem too interested in helping out. Great food and beverages. We were very impressed by the the quality of customer service and food. The wait can get a little long during peak tourist season (that's true for just about any restaurant in the Northwoods during this time), but while you wait you can enjoy a beer or Bloody Mary on the dock and as well as the view of Big Stone Lake which often includes small aircraft taking off from the adjacently-located airport. Kid-friendly. Located directly on Big Stone Lake - drive by car or by boat. Gas up your boat if needed while there. A "general store" selling the basics (sunscreen, ice cream, etc) is also connected to the restaurant. read more

Stopped here by snowmobile yesterday. Place was jumpin! The wait for a table couldn't be helped. The staff was friendly, good serving size of food. What a change from the other place on the Three Lakes Chain. No offense to the other place but the food at Sunset is just better! After year we finally decided to try Sunset Grill. Why have we not tried it before? Well, Big Stone is quite a boat ride from Long Lake and also the severe lack of dock space always turned us away. But we tried it and we were impressed. now I guess we should have come for breakfast because I have heard it is amazing but we came for lunch and... I had a Bacon Ranch Burger and it was a very good burger. Was it the best ever...no but it was very good and more importantly...cooked the way I wanted. My wife got "The Anchor" witch is the Sunset version of the Philly Cheesesteak. Now I will say this is your typical northwoods attempt at a Philly and they did well. it was good but the melted American singles on it did not scream Philly to me and it seemed to lack some sort of flavor. Just a suggestion....try some wiz. it really makes a Philly good. So, we had a great lunch and it was a fast lunch too. People with children appreciate that very much. Oh...and our service was excellent! Still need some more dock space for boats but the good meal offsets that and we would like to thank the people at Sunset for many more trips to come. read more

Could not get food because they were so behind at 11am. We were essentially turned away at this early hour. When we came back the next day, they refused to do takeout even though another employee said they were doing takeout. When you are the only spot on the lake with breakfast food, you should be more prepared for customers. Not to mention the rude, disinterested tone used by the host (who I'm assuming owns the place). We felt like we were a nuisance to him even though we just wanted some breakfast. also, none of the staff wore masks in the middle of a pandemic. 0/10 would not recommend this place. We stopped here this weekend on our sleds and had a great breakfast! I had an omelet with sundried tomatoes, spinach, and cheese...it was fantastic! All of the ingredients were very fresh. Wonderful view of the lake, very friendly staff, lots of room to store your snowmobile gear(in a separate room from the eating area), and decent prices. The service is horrible! We waited almost 30 minutes for drinks. My husband had to go to the hostess stand to ask for a waitress. The drinks sat empty the entire meal. The food took forever. As we were leaving I had to track down the manager, who seemed to be completely clueless of the entire situation. It always start with leadership and she had none. Every poor review listed is about timing and customer service. Well, you can start by bringing in new management. Walked into the restaurant at 11:25. The host seating us told us that breakfast was served until 11:30 and lunch started at 11:30. We got seated at our table and the waitress came to take our order at 11:35. We asked if it was possible to order lunch items since it was after 11:30. She said no. We were fine ordering breakfast, but hoped we could order a grilled cheese sandwich for my 18 month old. Again she said no that the kitchen was still serving breakfast. So we ordered him a fruit cup and some hash browns instead. 45 minutes later our food showed up. There are only 12 tables in the restaurant! Absolutely ridiculous amount of time to wait for pancakes and a breakfast sandwich. About 5 minutes after we received our food the table next to us (that had come in 5 minutes after us) got their LUNCH (not breakfast). So frustrating. We will never be back. read more
