We went here the other night (as a group of 13) we were told at 5:30 that the wait would be 30 minutes for a table however, we didn't get seated till 7. When we asked for an umbrella because the sun was on our elderly grandparents, the waiter refused to put one in the table multiple times, saying the sun would set in a hour. We ended up putting the umbrella into the table ourselves, after watching another table do so, as they were also told no for the umbrella. We asked for water, which tasted like it came from the toilet and took forever to come. The food took a while, we didn't get it till 8:30, and it wasn't that good. Also, the portions were small for the price. The bathrooms were trashed, there was lettuce in the urinals, and paper towels all over, which made the floor slippery! My elderly grandmother almost slipped! Overall, service was slow and our waiter was overworked. She seemed annoyed and rude, however that could be because she had too many tables to take care of. It also smelled awful by the bar, maybe low tide but it only smelled it one spot. read more

This restaurant needs to remember who supports their business- TOURISTS. Recently, our family traveled to the area and after a long drive my 8 year old niece had a bathroom emergency, was crying and in need of a restroom asap. We pulled into The Sunset Grill in the morning at opening and politely requested for her to use the bathroom, there were no other customers at this time. I was appalled at how the staff acted and quickly dismissed my niece after clearly seeing how frustrated and desperate we were in that moment, including her tears for help. The staff was rude, dismissive and clearly didn't want to help a child who was having a bathroom emergency. Is this how we should treat others? Potential customers? As a tourist who visits with 16 other people every year, we will NOT be supporting this business in the future and will be spreading the word to our vacationing friends as well. As a business, it is vital to remember WHO supports and helps your business thrive and for this restaurant, its tourists like us. EVERY interaction is a REFLECTION (current customer or not) and to treat a child who is having a human moment (embarrassed and already in tears)with a simple solution to offer in providing a restroom as RUDELY as the staff did is UNACCEPTABLE. I wish the staff to know that my niece had to wait an additional 20 minutes in slow moving traffic, before we could find an available bathroom for her to use. Kindness and decency is lacking in this world and it was especially sad to see it in the OBX, a place where kids find magic and memories every summer. Do better Sunset Grill, treat everyone with respect, especially children who are always learning and watching how they are treated by others. You lost many potential customers in our family. Lastly, the lack of public restrooms for travelers to this area needs to be addressed to avoid this situation happening to other children. read more

Great spot to watch the sunset, came without a reservation on a Saturday and there was plenty of seating with a good view. Clam chowder was the best dish we tried (award winning!). The salmon lover poke left something to be desired - there wasn't much salmon, and it was smoked rather than raw which is atypical for poke. There was also a strange bitter taste. We were here in 7/18/2024 at 9:30pm. The customer service here is so bad it is almost amusing. This place would make a great location for the next episode of Undercover Boss. The hostesses were disinterested and the one who eventually acknowledged us was snippy, then a waitress told us we can't sit in her section, then the two overtly chatted about our party and told us if we wanted to sit outside we'd have to find a barstool even though 90% of the outside tables were clear. When we went to the bar, the bar is very small, dirty, in a bad location, and the bartender was very high/stoned. He was meandering around, forgetting orders, clumsily and randomly inserting himself into conversations. He brought our drinks to us one at a time, he didn't bring one person's beer at all, and that process took 15 mins by itself which was not quite as long as how long it took him to run my card to pay the tab. The time to do this was in part due to the fact he forgot what he was doing even though my credit card was the only one in his hand the entire time. Other than that - the view is great, the food is mediocre, and the prices are high. Also, the inside portion of the restaurant has low ceilings and an excessive amount of fluorescent light that you will like you are in a hospital or inside an aquarium. Go elsewhere. Used to be great. It's not the same restaurant it was years ago. Fourteen years ago, I remember going to Sunset Grill and ordering Moet & Chandon champagne and top notch seafood for my party. The scenery, food, and service were all top notch at that time. We recently visited in summer of 2020 and the best they have available was a common prosecco. The food was meh. Service was fast and friendly. But the vibe has changed. It feels like a casual place now with casual, forgettable food. The view is still nice, though. read more

This place was packed for dinner time on a Friday night. We were seated indoors at a small table at the bar. Service was slow due to how busy they were. Staff were wearing masks and they kept clean silverware in plastic bags as a preventative measure during Covid. The mixed drinks were delicious! We tried the Shamu and Shark nite drinks. We have been coming here for years, mostly because of the beautiful location. That said, this place really doesn't do itself any favors and could easily be a 4 or 5 star review: 1. The hostesses don't smile. Three hostesses glared at us when we entered as if we were at the DMV; almost daring us to ask for a table. Management needs to train the hostess staff to be friendly. 2. The lighting in this restaurant is BRIGHT WHITE LED like you are in an interrogation room. It feels cold and sterile and truly makes the inside surrounding uncomfortable. 3. The kids meal looked like prison food. My daughter ordered fish bites and it was not edible. I ended up getting her a bowl of clam chowder. That said, the food can actually be pretty decent here. Great prime rib; decent seafood and steamer options; lots of good fish options. Also, our server was very attentive and on top of his game. We were really happy with him. If I owned this restaurant I would make those three simple improvements above and honestly, this restaurant would rack up 4 and 5 star reviews. During our family vacation to OBX, we decided to eat out dinner on a Tuesday. We (mistakenly) thought maybe the crowds wouldn't be as bad on a weekday. We learned that everyday is Saturday in Duck, NC during August. Let's start by saying we had a party of 12, counting adults and kids, so we knew it was going to be a challenge. The first place we tried was going to be over an hour, and all 12 of us had to be there to get a table. So that was a fail. Our next choice was to try Sunset Grille, which we had been to maybe 5 yrs ago. It turned out to be the right choice. They have an area upstairs, with great views of the sound side, where it looks like they cater to larger groups. We only waited about 10 minutes, and service was pretty quick. While we were there, they seated 2 different groups which were larger than ours, so I think they clearly know how to handle bigger groups. As far as the food and appetizers, they were great. My cajun redfish was really good, and my wife's island mahi-mahi was even better. And the calamari sticks are very good. Sunset was good 5 yrs ago, and it was even better this time. I was shocked thinking this was a fraud alert. But, no. Apparently, the server dropped my card through the deck to the water below. I asked the manager what they were going to do about it. She was not concerned and just told us to pull out another card. She made it clear that it was not their place to "do anything about it". When she brought the receipt for me to sign, using my husband's card, I expressed that this was not an easy fix and that I felt we were due compensation. Had a largish group (11) dine on a Saturday evening in mid-October. The hostess had us hangout at the bar until our entire party arrived. Once all were there, we were seated at a nice double table & our server, Ev, was great. He made suggestions and was flexible when a substitute was requested, most of the table had the Mahi-Mahi with another ordering She Crab Soup, The Grouper Platter & a rack of ribs. It came with rice that was cooked in coconut milk, I hated it and felt like it did not go with the rest of the dish. The chicken was fine, but small. For what it was, not worth $25!! We finally decided to take the plunge and eat here after driving by so many times. It sits soundside so is a great place to watch the sunset to the west...but that's truly all it is good for, sadly. You have the option to sit indoors or out and there are two different host stands to do that. We showed up at around 7 and were told it would be about two hours. You give them a phone number and begin your wait. As I said, it's a great spot to watch the sun go down and grab a drink. My husband surprised me with a pina colada, that tasted like a watered-down slushie. No pineapple taste, definitely no alcohol taste. Just bad. After waiting almost two hours, we were finally seated. I wish I had opted for indoors...outside is full of flying bugs, spiders and is dark. We probably got extra protein as you couldn't really see your plates. And as they close at 10, we felt like servers were rushing to get everyone served. The food was decent. But the ambiance once the sunset was just bad. My kids were terrified a spider was going to crawl on them from under the table...because if you look under the tables there are tons of spider webs and spiders just chilling. Every table probably needs a nice powerwash before dinner service, but really...just opt to eat inside.
