The food was delicious & was made quickly. The environment is very calm and warming. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in trying Vietnamese food or top tier Pho. Stopped in for a late-ish dinner after working out. Only place open on a Monday night after 9pm that had banh mi's! I called and the owner was super helpful, he sold me on the Yugoslavian sausage fusion bahn mi! I ordered one of the above and a lemon grass pork. The orders seemed a little high price-wise at first, but I noticed they included fries. All good! Went in to pick up my takeout order at around 9:20 PM and the place had more diners than I expected, slurping pho and enjoying the NBA playoffs. As I waited, a couple more groups came in, which is great to see. The ambiance is a dark, warm, moody wood-trimmed bar and dining room. Evokes eastern Europe. I started eating the fries right away, they were amazing! The thick cut type with a great crisp and flavorful seasoning. They didn't make it home. Vietnamese and Yugoslavian fusion means spring rolls with cevapcici in them, an EXCELLENT combination. It doesn't mean that the classic pho isn't done right though, it's still hearty and meaty and loaded with everything you need. I will say the pho was heavy on black pepper and the noodles were a little fused BUT it's still a decent bowl of pho. I will say the real highlights are their non-pho dishes and their fusion and Yugoslavian dishes, I highly encourage you to branch out and explore the menu. Truly a unique and absolutely delicious experience! I have never seen a fusion of Vietnamese and Yugoslavian cuisine before, and it really is so so good! Every dish we tried was excellent and perfectly crafted! - Spicy Lemongrass Beef Noodle Soup: The broth was incredibly flavorful! This dish is listed under phở, but the broth and noodles are just like bún bò Huế. Though it is different in that they use the type of beef that is typically in phở. I actually think this might be my favorite bowl of bún bò Huế ever?! It's a big bowl but somehow I ate it all! - Sunset Special Phở: My partner got this and I tasted the broth. Wow, it's flavorful!! I loved that there was Yugoslavian sausage in it! - Spring roll with Yugoslavian sausage: Wow. What a combination. I love the flavor of the sausage with the traditional Vietnamese peanut sauce. Highly recommend getting this as an appetizer. The space is intimate and cozy and beautiful, with it's sloped ceilings, stained glass windows, and holiday decor. Very cool that this used to be a church. I recommend making reservations because there is limited space and it's popular! We came on a Friday evening around 5pm without reservations and we're lucky to snag some of the last seats at the bar. Dining room is also a special kind of stained glass window treatment throwback. As is the 60s music. Vietnamese dishes are perfectly fine, but its the Yugoslavian stuff that really shines. Pho is my comfort food when I'm feeling a bit sick or stuffed up so my first time being sick while living in Chicago, went to find my new go to Pho spot. This place is definitely in the running! If it wasn't for the price, I probably would've given it 5 stars. It's a lovely little cafe with a great atmosphere and the servers are super friendly. I sat at the bar and had a nice chat with the bartender. Rare Beef Pho - 4/5 - Taste wise, this is a definite 5/5. Tasted super fresh and delicious and cleared my sinuses right up. Very good portions of meat and noodles in the bowl, and they give a lot more of the veggies (basil, peppers, bean sprouts) here than at a lot of other Pho places I've been to. As I mentioned, my only gripe was the price. I believe I paid $23 for this bowl of Pho. I am accustomed to paying now more than $15-$16 for the same serving so that was a little off putting. While yes, it was delicious, I don't think the extra $8 was worth what I was getting. I will be shopping around for another Pho spot in the area, but if nothing is as good, or they are all similarly priced, I will probably be back! read more

I was feeling under the weather and pho is always a go to for me when I'm sick. I hadn't tried this place before, even though I don't live too far away. I ordered the beef pho and got delivery. It got to me much quicker than the estimated time and the broth was still really hot. Everything was packaged nicely, including the meat in a separate bag. The noodles came in a bowl that I could pour everything into, which I always appreciate. This is one of the best pho places I've had in Chicago so far and the serving size was also huge. Extremely delicious pho and very organic and clean tasting. I chose the chicken pho and the cuts of meat were extremely good and generous. I've had pho before that was a bit on the spicier side; but this broth was not made fiery so you can add Chilli paste, Siracha sauce...etc to your liking because the spices are arranged to the side of each table. The Thai iced tea however is prepared very very strongly and since I ate at around 4pm I did suffer a bit of insomnia so a warning they use a lot of black tea with a little Thai mix and some milky substance and froth at the top with Boba pearls. It was around $7 and not the way I typically enjoy it but you might love their gourmet bubble tea version of Thai tea. The atmosphere here is very serene and relaxing and you can definitely take your time to enjoy your huge bowl of homemade pho. This is a private, family owned business and each family member works here so they will take good care of you! I will definitely return! This restaurant typically opens at 5pm during the work week but after 3pm on the weekends only. Pho prices range from around $17 to 25 depending upon the ingredients of the soup. read more

What a quirky spot!! The ambiance is so interesting... The bar feels like a German pub, the ceilings have fake stained glass lighting, they play basketball games like a sports bar, and everything else is just eclectic! It definitely was not what I expected from a pho restaurant but I was enjoying myself nonetheless. The service was good, although I think the one man hosting and waiting was a bit overwhelmed given how popular of a dinner spot this appeared to be! Focusing solely on the food, the beef was SO good in both the pho and the vermicelli. Amazing quality tender beef, and the flavor/cooking was perfect, too. The citrus and veggies in the vermicelli salad were also great - I am obsessed with the fresh citrus/salty beef combo!! The pho was also tasty. I thought it was a bit pricey at $15 but the serving is HUGE. We could have split just that and been full, so the value is definitely there if you come hungry!! Best pho so far in the Chicago area! We tried the spring roll with Yugoslavian sausage, and it was really yummy. I think I still prefer the shrimp version, but the balance was still good. And as many reviews said, the peanut sauce was amazing. The pho broth was incredible, portion size was large, and the entire dish was simply delicious. Service also went above and beyond. I was in Lakeview for a brief stint at work and got off early. I was looking for places nearby to eat and referred to my bookmarks. I initially bookmarked Sunset Pho out of curiosity from prior rave reviews so convenience made this visit happen. I opted for carry out and ordered a Banh Xeo (A crepe filled pancake with sprouts, scallions, and shrimp) in addition to their pork chop dinner. I promised the owner, Zell, back on May 24th, that I would leave a good review (because he deserved one), then I got home and life took over. Better late than never! My wife and I are long-time pho and bun lovers. We thought it was interesting that Sunset also offered some Eastern European dishes on the menu. We thought, "What's up with that?" I figured maybe this area of Chicago has a lot of Ukrainian and/or Russian immigrants and they were trying to cater to them. But when we decided to try Sunset Pho out we were taken completely by surprise. First, when we entered the restaurant we thought we were in the wrong place. LOL! Instead of the traditional pho restaurant layout, we found ourselves in this very pleasant bar/restaurant, nicely decorated. There was also this very friendly guy sitting there saying hello to us in a voice that reminded me of some Russians I worked with years ago. His name was Zell. It turns out that the restaurant belongs to Zell, from Ukraine, I believe, and his wife, who is Vietnamese and as it turns out, quite a chef! We hungrily reviewed the menu like we always do, then ordered the same food we always order at a pho restaurant. LOL! My wife had a bowl of pho and I had a bowl of bun, my favorite - grilled pork with egg roll. Yum! I sipped a very nice wine recommended by Zell. It was a white, almost yellow (should have taken a photo of it), slightly grassy with citrus undertones. It went so good with my bun I could hardly believe it. Note that I like my bun spicy, but this wine was able to stand up to the spice, no problem. My wife loved her pho! I was delighted with the amount of wonderfully grilled pork and the egg roll was perfect - and that sauce, yum! I told my wife after I bit into it that although I've eaten a thousand egg rolls, there was something in the way she seasoned it that I don't get anywhere else, but yet it was familiar. To be honest, it reminded me of the egg rolls I would get in Vietnam so many years ago. One of the few pleasant memories of that time. We were fortunate to have beaten the dinner crowd, so Zell was able to pay us some good attention, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We found out that the Eastern European dishes on his menu are his favorites and he wants to introduce this food to interested customers. What a nice thing to do. I told myself that when I go back during our next visit, I intend to try some of his recommendations out! Thus what we hoped might turn out to be simply a good restaurant decision turned out to be an overall really good experience decision for food, environment and of course, gracious and friendly owners. We ordered two entrees, Vegetarian Pho and Vegetarian Lemon Grass Spicy Pho both came with a slight delay but with very big portions. Easily two people can share one dish. They serve pho with a side salad (Lime, Basil Leaves, Sprouts and Jalapeño slices) We could not finish all of it and left more than a quarter of the dish. They were playing good music (I heard some Nina Simone - New day New dawn....) and have a great Ambiance. But the restaurant was very busy and had long waits. We had to wait 30 min to get a table. There was only server and the owner was helping her. Service could have been better as its too much for one server. But overall, We enjoyed our food and time here and will return for sure. Best pho place yet!! We stumbled upon this place by chance after our go-to Vietnamese restaurant was closed, but now we are never going back to the old place! At first I thought a Vietnamese/Yugoslavian fusion might be odd - I was proven very wrong. Sunset Pho Caffe offers a unique and culturally informed fusion of Yugoslavian meats and flavors in traditional Vietnamese dishes. The food was so good that we chowed it down before I remember to even take a picture (but trust me it's a pretty dish as well). The decor and ambiance of the restaurant represents the same Vietnamese/Yugoslavian fusion found in their food. We were fortunate enough to speak with one of the owners and learn more about the history of the restaurant as a family-owned business and as a blend of broadly different cultures. I was sad to find out that they had closed on Western and I thought they were gone for good. When I came back on a recent visit I found that they had gone upmarket and moved to Lakeview, and I was afraid it would lose some of its character. My worries were for naught because it was still the same. The same food; I wouldn't say it's a complete fusion because there are separate Vietnamese and Croatian food items but the spring rolls with Croatian sausage is still my favorite appetizer on the menu. I usually get the special pho and they're okay with making some changes. My sister requested no cilantro, which was easy because our server joked and said it's usually the tripe people want to omit (by the way, why would people do that?! You're missing out!) The owner is also really friendly, and that's not just because of the free shot of brandy that he passes around. It's nice to talk about the 'good old days' of letting children run outside and play and he talked about how his parents sent him unaccompanied to the old country by himself. Argyle can be tough to beat but Sunset is a good alternative if you don't want to go there, although I do miss the easy street parking on Western. read more

Not pictured was a Thai iced tea that was very tasty. They used homemade cream cheese foam that made the drink. Beef pho didn't need any Sriracha/hoisin because the broth was that flavorful. Many pho places NEED it, but sunset pho knows what's up. Spicy Lemongrass beef soup had thicker noodles and such a unique flavor that will keep me coming back for more.
