GOOD, HONEST HOME COOKING! The Sunset has been around for 80 years and it's because they understand how to prepare food. I've been going there for years and they never disappoint. It's nothing fancy, just food like my Mom made. And they don't have a huge menu but they do is done right. Vegetables are fresh and seasoned correctly, daily specials like turkey and dressing and ALL the pies are made in house. Family owned and some of the best service you could ask for! They make you feel welcome when you walk in and that feeling continues throughout the meal. It is CASH ONLY but they have an ATM. Sunset is the quintessential town cafe. Locals and visitors love the down-home food, and the staff is always friendly. Hubby always gets the double cheeseburger, and I'm stuck on the chicken salad sandwich on gluten-free bread, with a side salad. It's hard to leave something that totally works. Although I never can eat them, because of gluten intolerance, they are known for their pies, so you may want to indulge for dessert. read more

So this place is cute, definitely a local staple and you just know it's gonna be good because of the delicious smell That hits ya as you walk in the door. We all had the turkey dinner. I didn't use words while eating. It was all "Mmmm" - the gravy - THE GRAVY .... I could have drank a mug of it. So good. The biscuit was amazing and the turkey was tender. I'm not too big on "dressing" - the stuff the waitress said is like us northerners type stuffing. But I didn't care, I was in a food bubble bliss. Fast friendly service, clean and the food was great. I had two scrambled eggs with biscuits and gravy and a side of sausage. My daughter had the French toast with bacon. We couldn't finish it all. When ever we are in town we go to sunset every morning. We enjoy the atmosphere of a family restaurant. The service is always perfect warm and friendly. We are always greeted with a big smile and a good morning. The food is quick and always delicious. My favorites are the omelettes always great. In the days of fast food it is so nice to enjoy a wonderful little restaurant like the Sunset. What a great place to enjoy breakfast. Our first day of vacation began by finding a breakfast spot on yelp. We were seated right away(party of 5) on a Friday morning around 9:30. Our waitress was kind and helpful. She suggested an amount of pancakes and sausage for our little kids to enjoy. She put that order in first so we had enough time to cut their pancakes up. Our food was great and the service was even better. We enjoyed a veggie omelette and two bacon, egg and cheese biscuits. We will be adding this spot to our vacation list for a great home cooked breakfast! read more

The Sunset- a local legend-45 years!?-,cash only diner favorite for a nice meal. mask use optional amongst the mostly older clientele during our visit. wife chose the grilled chicken sandwich with onion rings both of which were typical and fine. the chicken appeared to be cooked to order, not reheated as in some spots. i went with the special of the night, grilled trout filet. perfectly cooked and tasted like it was right out of the river in the area. sides were unremarkable-green beans and slaw. Sunset is famous for it's homemade pies-coconut, lemon, butterscotch, plus some seasonal specials. i jumped at the chocolate pie seen in the case on the way in. unfortunately, the towering dune of what looked like whipped cream turned out to be meringue! who makes chocolate (cream) pie with meringue. and i am not a fan of it in any setting. the chocolate filling and the crust were nicely done but fell short of my expectations due to the choice of topping. all in all a better than average but somewhat disappointing meal. read more

Whenever we're in the Franklin area we try to find an interesting new restaurant to try. Today we were delighted with the Sunset which we understand has been in business since 1945! The atmosphere is bright, cheery and very clean and attractive in every way - with adequate parking too. The waitstaff is very attentive. And the prices are amazing. We had the Tuesday special of turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potato and veggies with turkey gravy. The turkey, stuffing and gravy were particularly homestyle-yummy (the mashed the only so-so). Our companions raved about the broccoli soup. And the chocolate and coconut meringue pies were truly exceptional. Looks like a locals hangout but definitely up for visitors too. Cash only - but that's probably what keeps the prices down. read more

I like to find "hole in the wall" places, where the locals go, that usually have great food. Here's my experience at the Sunset Restaurant. We found out about this place from a lady at the Visitors Center. She said that this is where the locals go to eat and that the pie was fantastic. When we got there we had to leave before even going inside. This place is CASH or CHECK ONLY!! NO CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS are accepted. Who takes a checkbook with them anymore? And my husband and I do not carry cash. We weren't told it was cash or check only. So we had to go find a place (Walmart) to get cash back. I liked what I had heard about this place so we went back. It was crowded but we were seated right away. Everything on the menu sounded good and was priced well. On the menu it says 1 refill only on drinks. We both got sweet tea (very good, btw!!) and the waitress refilled our glasses three times without us asking for a refill. That made me happy. I'm a southern girl and I love sweet tea.....and I was thirsty! I ordered the double hamburger with French fries and my husband got the double cheeseburger with onion rings. The hamburgers are hand-smacked, made fresh daily from chuck beef and are very very good!! The fries are the crinkle kind and were also good. I don't like onions, but I will eat them fried. I'm weird, I know. The onion rings were very thin but were really good. For dessert we had...pie...of course. I got the buttermilk pie and he got the pecan pie (warmed). I loved my pie. Our waitress said it was made on site by her grandmother. I need grandmother's recipe. Haha :-P. I didn't care too much for the pecan pie. I usually love it, but this one had a burnt taste. I don't know if warming it did that or if it was over cooked to start with. Probably just a one time fluke and might be better next time. I definitely suggest this little restaurant to everybody and I will definitely be back. read more

I have to agree w Olivera's review. It is sadly nothing special. We moved here in 2015 & do not understand the draw to this place. The parking lot is full lunch or dinner but the food is blah! I have tried the chicken salad twice, fried fish, salads and even bought pies...none of which I would try again! There are many other places to eat with delightful food, atmosphere & great service. This restaurant was recommended to us by a local shop keeper, maybe because the owner of the restaurant was in his store at the time. My wife & I were visiting Franklin for the day & wanted to eat at a family run place. They had a fair amount of locals(judging by the familiarity) eating there. It's pleasantly appointed in a country decor. The service wasn't particularly friendly, timely or pleasant, considering the style of restaurant. They were more upbeat with the local clientele, which annoyed my wife & I. We are polite & friendly by nature, & have a background in hospitality/restaurants. We were told that everything is prepared fresh, as it should be in such a place. It's country soul food after all. The onion rings tasted like bland frozen supermarket rings. My wife had the "homemade" chicken pot pie, which was pretty revolting to be honest. Sludgy chicken soup with chicken "string pieces" that were so soft you could eat it through a straw! What a gloopy mess. The corn that came with it tasted like it came out of a can. I had their fried chicken with fries & coleslaw. The chicken was very nice. It was tasty & cooked perfectly, with a good amount of moisture in the meat. The fries again, tasted frozen & generic. The coleslaw was OK, but my wife didn't think much of it. They did bring a basket of 3 "biscuits", of which only the corn bread style disappointed because it was dry & tasteless. The two other variations were good & very light & fluffy. That was what I was expecting from the whole meal. Good quality home cooking. I definitely wouldn't eat there again, based on the inconsistency of the food & the marginal service provided. Also the pricing of the food was higher than it should be based on the serving sizes & quality. $7.50 for a small, low quality chicken pot pie, & $11.50 for 1/2 fried chicken. read more

Get real folks this ain't New York City. I go to Sunset Grill every time I am in Franklin for breakfast. Always eggs, country ham, grits and biscuits. Always friendly service to friendly people. Priced right, consistent quality. I just can't imagine what people who complain all the time expect, maybe they expect a $10 meal to adjust their miserable attitude. We were spending the night in Frankin, NC and wanted something different from fast food. Since we had our dog with us, we were searching for "take out" and came across the Sunset Restaurant. The hostess was very helpful, nice and friendly! The take out is on the side of the restaurant. Someone actually comes out and takes your order! I got a vegetable plate and my husband ordered barbecued pulled pork. We had coconut custard pie for dessert. So yummy! This was a delicious meal we ate while sitting in our truck in their parking lot! We highly recommend the Sunset Restaurant! read more
