I enjoy coming here way more than the irving one, its less crowded, free public parking, and its near my work. Id rather come here than ranch99, maybe because ranch 99 is far, but i also know where everything is here. Things to get here: rice crackers, fruits, soy milk (theres one that is arabic? or some kind of language in a glass bottle, REALLY GOOD), garlic peanuts, and those cube jelly candies!!! you should come on a weekday, during the hours of 10am-3pm before it gets crowded when everyone gets off work. I come here on occasion when I need the various asian food items like green onions or maybe dried noodles, etc, etc. They're really good with prices and the seafood is large and diverse. Canned foods are iffy at best, but most people who shop here do not buy that stuff. Typical asian foods, and most of it is cheap. Snacks, candies, even unusual items like a rice cooker, hot plate, plunger, etc. Definitely expect a crowd of people at the seafood counter. Just expect to not find parking. The supermarket is like most Chinese supermarket in Sunset. Very inexpensive and jammed packed with a lot of variety of goodies. Don't forget to BYOB otherwise it will cost you. The shopping carts cost .25 cents and you will get it back when you return it. Street parking only. read more

Your typical chinese supermaket. They might not have the selection of a 99 range but for the size and location, Ill keep coming back. Parking can be a hassle though since its in a residential area and right next to a playground. If you are looking for fresh seafood and fruits with prices about the same as chinatown, this is the place to be. Asian supermarket... what is there to say besides they have what I need and want to get. I mostly come in, get my goods, pay for said goods, and leave. Parking can become an issue but they have a small parking lot on the corner of Vicente and 39th and some parking along the front of the market. In my experiences, I've been mostly lucky in finding a spot right in their parking lot or along the front but I have seen people double park in front and across the street during the holiday times, when every Asian household is trying to get their hot pot goods. Came here for stuff to hot pot with. Those were the only things I wanted to buy, but after walking down a few aisles, I then decided to get MORE. I didn't cave in to buy snacks, however I caved in on Vitasoy drinks that were on sale and a few packs of yogurt drinks (Yakult?). Need to make myself regular...ya know?! I remember they use to be $.50 at the Korean market on Noriega when I went to middle school...the Korean market is no longer there (moved to Daly City) & no longer that cheap. At the Korean martket, I think they're $.89 on sale + THEY CHARGE $.05 CRV FOR EACH ONE. Each pack comes in a pack of 5, that's TWENTY-FIVE CENTS FOR CRV, about 1/4 of the price of the product. Okay, this isn't a review on Kukje, but for Sunset Super. This place is less crowded compared to the one on Irving. What did I get today??? Hmm...lobster balls, shrimp balls, beef balls, duck gizzards (I couldn't find chicken liver...I know the Sunset Super on Irving has it), beef, soy milk, a couple packs of Vitasoy, a couple packs of Yakult...Everything was a little over $20. If I had only bought the stuff I wanted for hot pot, it probably would have been around $12. Parking isn't too hard to find, I parked 2 blocks away. Fresh produce, both vegetables and fruits, has quite a wide selection of seasonal items too. Good selection of meats, poultry and seafood. Plenty of variety in canned foods and snacks department. I always say that if you want to cut down on your grocery bill, you should always hit the Asian (or Latino) markets. Being I am Asian and I live in the Sunset, I have to go to Sunset Super (Asian pride, man!). If I live in the Mission, I'd probably go to one of the Latino markets. But if I was Latino and living in the Sunset, I'd still go to Sunset Supermarket. Now let's see if I can draw up a decision tree for that. Lolia S. is right: there is no other business in the area, street parking is plentiful. And even if you are car-free, the L stops 2 blocks away (steep hill though) and the 29 stops 4 blocks away. I liked it better when they complied with the plastic bag ban a few months ago. But now they went back to plastic, and it's the heavy duty, really kind too. Underneath their logo, there's a sign on that bag, "This bag is reusable" or something like that. I wonder if that's how they got away with going back to using plastic. Their produce section is cheap, and I bought a lot of cheap ramen to stock up for the days when I don't want to cook real food. Be aware: any supermarket with a high concentration of the Asian population will include crazy maneuvers for parking. Apparently, according to my mother, the rice is more expensive here than other places. :( The prices here are a little higher than the smaller Asian markets, but I always feel a bit better buying from large, bright supermarkets than small, dingy ones. Blah. Parking isn't hard to find around here either. It's a residential neighborhood, so just go up or down the block if you can't find any directly in front of the store or in the parking lot. The parking lot is usually full though, due to the fact that they have like 4 spaces. Oh yeah, and the people in the meat department seem very friendly to me. This is a Chinese Safeway. They have most of your everyday stuff for Asian cooking from vegetables to fresh seafood. They have removed a few things over the years. There are no more balut or a produce items. read more

This is a the best place to shop in the outer sunset. I would rather go here than Chinatown. It is easier to get to than going to the one on Irving which is hard as anyplace to get to. The freshest place to get fresh fruit and vegetables as well as other junk food. It is a kids heaven with the 2 rows of junk food lining the shelves. Where else in the area can you get a box of pocky, 50 lbs of rice, a cleaver, fish and meat all in one sitting? I do admit that I have seen a layer of dust on some of the products, and the drivers around that area suck especially during the weekends having trouble parking and parking in the handicap zones. Some of the candied stuff is also melted. So I highly recommend this place for groceries and for staving off scurvy. read more

Parking sucks here but the variety and cheap prices make is all worth it. I come here often to pick up my groceries whenever I want to cook. Usually I will head to the fresh meat or seafood sections. Both these sections does me wonders as I find things here that I will not be able to at Safeway or Lucky's. Check their dungeness crab prices often as they have killer deals all the time. I go to both Sunset Supers - this one and the one on Irving St. I note that the non-Asians have caught onto this store. The produce, fish, poultry are cheaper and fresher here than in regular supermarkets and Trader Joe's. Usually, I come here to load up on my Asian foodstuff. Recently, I came here to refill my empty refrigerator. I bought cornish hen, package of drumsticks, frozen white fish, a whole chicken, some clam meat, fruits, veggies, 2 tubs of tofu, salt lick snacks (toasted nori and snap pea crisps), frozen potstickers, a dozen eggs, bottle of light soy sauce. 4 bags of groceries - all for under $40. What a haul! The cashiers, at both locations, have all been efficient and they take credit cards. I don't dare come to either store on the weekend unless it's about an hour before closing time, when it's more possible to get a parking space. read more

What? Fab find. EVERYTHING you need in the way of ANYTHING for ANY style of Asian cooking. Lots of different varieties of live fish in tanks. If you're squeamish, don't look as they bonk the fish on it's head.....Well, you wanted "fresh". Cleaner than your average Asian market. Don't know why i never shopped at this sunset super locale. Less crowded than irving, customers more polite. Same great prices on produce and protein. I always find interesting new asian products, this week it was live farmed bullfrogs. Selection is inferior to ranch 99, simply cuz the store is much smaller. This is the closest grocery store to my house, but I try to avoid it unless I just can't deal with going further or just need to get a couple of things, or if I'm making an Asian dish with something I wouldn't find at a different grocery. The bad parts are that the space is small, aisles are narrow, floors are very dirty and grimy and it just looks quite rundown and uncared for. A lot of the produce is shrink-wrapped in styrofoam flats, which I think they do to get people to buy the undesirable items since you have to buy the package which might contain some very old or overripe items that you can't examine before buying. I've had shrimp from here, but their meat department looks dirty and gross and I avoid buying meat from here--it creeps me out. I read people on Yelp making the excuse of "it's a Chinese grocery." Yes, I understand that they're not going to have decent selections of cheeses, wines, decent breads and other European-style foods. In fact, I couldn't even find canned tomatoes. But c'mon, they can do better as far as cleanliness. "A chinese grocery" is not a good excuse for the general grossness. I've gone grocery shopping in Hong Kong as well as other Chinese groceries in the Bay Area like 99 Ranch and other smaller places. None of the others had the same extent of problems such as grime, spoiling foods, pests and stench. I know this isn't only a Chinese cultural thing because other Chinese groceries do quite a lot better than this place. I'm sure there are parts of China that are worse--but I guess I expect more and it seems like other Chinese here have a higher standard, too. The people working there haven't been rude to me, unlike what some other reviewers say--though they might not greet you at the checkout or tell you the total. I just figured some were not comfortable speaking English. Now for the good things. They are close to my house. Their prices are pretty good. They have some European chocolates like Lindt and random French butter cookies with fruit jelly in the center. They have a good supply of Asian sauces and things like rice-paper wrappers for spring rolls. They probably have what you need for making many Asian dishes. Their produce also has many Asian items that you wouldn't find in Lucky, Safeway or Trader Joes. Yes, I bought banana blossoms on a whim there once. So overall, I'd go here if getting Asian ingredients is a priority and it's the closest place and you are ok with some general dirtiness and maybe some sub-par produce mixed in. Otherwise, I'd probably go elsewhere to other groceries or Asian groceries somewhere else if you have the option. read more

We live only half a block from Sunset Super,we used to buy our stuff there,but from two years or so ago when Sunset Super started their packaging practices,several times we got some rotten vegetables and rotten fruits, usually the pre-packaged pack of produce being sold on a Styrofoam tray,when you look from the outside they are fine,the bottom are often moldy or rotten and should have been in the compost bin and not on the shelf for sale!So now we do our shopping elsewhere. read more

This place is Chinese, so naturally, expect quality control to be NON-EXISTENT here. They'll sell old produce to the detriment of customers so as to not waste product. It's just how it is. -The greens are infested with insects, so wash thoroughly. -All of the steaks I've bought have that old smell to it. -I just bought a pack of chicken thighs today. What a horrible experience. I drove all the way from Redwood City to buy some Asian food at this supermarket. I got the prepared baby octopus and seaweed salad and it tasted like it was spoiled. Two things to beware of: 1) This supermarket started to package vegies and fruits instead of allowing shopper to pick and choose. They will hide a couple of bad items in each package, for example, buy a package of 6 apples and you'll find two with holes in them. 2) The guys at the seafood counter are the most slimy people you'll ever meet. For example, I bought 2 crabs after inspecting them, but when I got home I found they had swapped these out with 2 crabs that were missing legs and probably weighed less (hence I was over charged). On another occasion, they tried to sell me a cheaper type of fish that looked similar to a more expensive fish, for the higher price of course. Also, as others have mentioned, this place is dirty and smelly. I'm never going back there again. I would rather drive 10 minutes to Ranch 99, get much better value for my money, and not have to worry about getting ripped off. read more

Cheap meat and produce and close to home #winning. Seems that the produce is freshest at the beginning of the week. Later in the week I find myself squeezing the fruit to make sure its not mushy...but it's worth it for the prices!! Where else can you get white peaches for $.79/lb? I get all of my ingredients for Asian dishes here as well. I would bypass the frozen section and don't even think about buying non-Asian condiments like...relish. It looks decades old. This is where I shop for my ingredients when I make chinese dishes. I also buy my fruits and vegetables here because it's usually cheaper than going to Lucky's or Safeway. If you buy fish, you can have them deep fry it for you. But beware if you drive, because your car will smell of fried fish. The best time to go on the weekend is early in the morning when they first open. Parking can be difficult later in the day. read more

This store is the cause of the neighborhood blight of abandoned shopping carts. I have repeatedly called them requesting that they retrieve the carts and to do something about the problem like other responsible neighborhood merchants have done. Sunset Supermarket is slightly cheaper than the average supermarket. I usually only go for the dry goods, sauces, spices and processed goods. I don't trust most of the "fresh" food being sold. On multiple occasions I have found moldy rotten food ranging from fruits, vegetable, chicken and noodles. Fruits- Stick with fruits with thick skin like oranges, banana and watermelon. Flaws are often hidden in the styrofoam packaging. Produce - Herbs are usually fresh. Bagged veggies are not the best quality. They are often dirty and insect infested. Meat- Questionable. I bought beef where it was red on one side and brown on the other. Stay away from the packaged chicken! The one time I bought it, I was smack by a strong rotten odor. Needless to say, I was a little bitter when it became yet another Asian grocery that reeked of seafood and durien. However. The produce is good, fresh, extensive and CHEAP! I love the lost-in-translation English labels. also the white-people aisle, that last time I checked had Equal but no actual sugar. I also love the snack aisle 11 - is there anything more fun than the snack aisle in an asian market? check out the jars of spicy fried broad beans - just don't believe the nutrition labels. read more
