Thrown together, NOT hot corned beef, terrible.

DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE! This was the first and last time I will order from this place. Ordered a HOT corned beef sandwich. Picked it up on time and it ice cold. Bread not grilled or even toasted, come on! Thrown in a bag...San which not even put together, just wrapped with things everywhere. No dressing. Terrible.

After a year+ on the lookout for this elusive Chicago delicacy, I recently had the good fortune of locating & eating a Jim Shoe (aka Gym Shoe) at Super Submarine on Ashland. For those not in the know, the Jim Show is a corn beef, roast beef and gyro meat filled sandwich originating from Chicago's South and West sides. I paid $14.99 + tax for a 12" beast of a sandwich. The meat was minced, mixed, and served on soft sub bread, then topped with mayo/tzatziki, yellow mustard, giardiniera, shredded lettuce and tomatoes. A blend of three famous sandwiches creating something amazingly delicious and completely American. Why choose one when you can have ALL THREE?! The Jim Shoe has claimed the number one spot in my heart (and stomach) as Chicago's best sandwich.

This place has FIOY* written all over it. It's easy to find the latest greatest trendiest restaurant - I dare you to find better food for a better value, and a nicer owner. That's why locals know best. Four of us ordered a feast fit for eight hungry people. 5 hot dogs, Wings & Thighs, Onion Rings, Fried Mushrooms, French Fries, Drinks - I don't think there was a fried item that escaped us. Total bill? $24. On a normal day we would have spent around $12. They make the perfect Chicago-style dog, and the onions and mushrooms and fries were extreme finger-licking goodness. But the superstar was definitely the fried chicken. I would walk 12 miles in the snow barefoot to sink my teeth into one of these drumsticks. Crispy, juicy, meaty - mercy me, it was so delicious! Most every meal comes with drinks and fries, so if you are strapped for cash, for a few mere dollars you can be sure you are going to leave full and happy, with a couple bucks left in your pocket. No-frills interior, late night window service, and simple, good eats. *Found It On Yelp

Faded sign just adds to the outdated decor

Why is this place getting such good reviews? I have no idea! I was pretty excited even though many people have posted "I wouldn't come here sober" or "after a heavy night of drinking...." but everyone seemed to state that this place was special. I mean I've been to some amazing late night bar foods that I would even eat while sober (although mentally after thinking about the caloric intake sober I probably wouldn't) but this place has nothing special about it. I posted an updated picture of this place. The sign is a faded yellow that it isn't easy to read what you are ordering. The bullet proof glass is a testamate of how long this place has survived in this location. Scared to order anything on the "fish" menu, we decided some burgers and fries. The "cook" pulled some frozen prefabbed burgers out of the freezer and some non-special buns from the pantry. He grabbed a bag of frozen non-special fries out of the freezer and put it in the deep frier. Then it just became a waiting game, let everything get unfrozen and pile everything up. Trust me, you can make a better burger and fries at your home, there is a jewel near by, it will be healthier, cleaner and tastier than whatever will come out of this place. I don't understand everyone's infatuation with their fries either. I mean even the bad reviews throw in a "at least the fries were decent." I think this was the first time that my wife and I didn't finish the fries from a burger and fry combo. Maybe he had just changed the grease or something but they were really nothing special. Yes, this place may be inexpensive, but that comes at a heavy price on your taste buds (or lack of any great taste) and your waste line. Skip it, move on, sober up.

    5 piece chicken tenders

Super Submarine is one of those fast food spots that you can count on te be open late, friendly, fast and affordable. I have only ever ordered delivery but it never takes longer than an hour. I've only ever had 1 complaint and after calling the restaurant they rectified the situation and refunded my money and apologized. I usually order the 5 piece chicken tenders which comes with fries, coleslaw, garlic bread and a drink for $8.99. If I want something quick this is one of my go to spots. I only give it 3 stars because there are plenty of fast food spots like this located on the Southside which are better all around in my opinion. The chicken wings are very good and seasoned perfectly too. Tip: Try the lemon pepper seasoning on your fries. Also, if you haven't already tried it; "Do-Rite Donuts" chicken tenders and chicken sandwiches are SERIOUSLY FINGER LICKING GOOD!!!

The meat portion was very generous; the beef was thinly sliced but juicy and not dry or hard at all; the sausage had a rich smoky flavor, not too salty, and tastes a lot like Harbin red sausage. Al's Classic Hand-Cut Fries: They were piping hot when I received them, so touching! I couldn't taste the hand-cut texture, but there was a spice powder similar to salt and pepper, and the flavor was quite good.

Kinda skimpy on the fixings on the Chicago dog, but still gets the job done if you're craving a Chicago dog. Fries are the type that are greasy to the touch; not my fave style of fries but I know it's a well-liked one to others. Super friendly lady at the cashier (all smiles, patient, and offered menu help)! Also fast service (got my order within a few minutes). I visited on a Saturday late afternoon and it was very chill here (also shoutout to the early 2000's era music playing :p it was a vibe). Overall I'd say it's not a bad food spot at all if you want a quick bite and want to be a little away from the Magnificent Mile crowds.

Great lunch/breakfast spot with fast service and simple/fresh sandwiches…read more The oven roasted turkey sandwich was great, tasted like something my grandma would make me (in a good way). Will be back.

I really want to like them so much more than I do. If there were a continuum from hipster deli…read more(think Mile End) to traditional deli (Manny's, 2nd Avenue, etc) Schneider would on the hipster side of center. Two of us shared a half pound pastrami on rye with a side of hash browns. The rye was pretty decent but the pastrami was sliced far too thick and the meat was lean. That is not a good thing when it comes to pastrami and I attribute the lean meat to the deli catering to its hipster-ish audience. Although the flavor was decent, the sandwich was dry and difficult to eat. We disagreed on the generously sized pickle. One of us thought the flavor was just right, the other not so much. We both agreed on the hash browns. It's a no-go. They were well fried but entirely unseasoned. I understand the lack of schmaltz but there was no onion or salt or anything else. Waffle House has nothing to worry about. (IYKYK) Service was fast and polite. The space is tiny, but it works. Prices are okay for this area but if you want traditional deli in Chicago, go to Manny's.
