Being from California originally, I am well versed in good Mexican food. Since living in Portland, I've decided that they have some of the worst Mexican food EVER (with the exception of New York....ewwww). I frequented Javiar's Taco Shop in NE Portland....just as something to fill my tummy for cheap. Having recently moved into SE Portland, I wandered into !Super Torta this morning (morning meaning after I woke up at 1pm) in search of a breakfast burrito with bacon for him and a carne asada burrito for me. (Javiar's is quite a drive from SE). Service- Very friendly, and food came up quick. He did get my order wrong (asked for black beans in place of refried).. Food- It was average. I found it a little plain and in need of hot sauce. But GREAT portions and cheap. I now have a half of burrito for dinner. The little building was a little grungy, but it's a hole in the wall Mexican place...so expected. It was also pretty busy for 2pm on a Monday afternoon. I'll be back because it's close. :) read more

WATCH OUT ! DONT EAT HERE WORST EVER! Plain and simply the worst meal I have ever had the misfortune to come in contact with much less paid for. Both my wifes shredded beef and my pork chimichanga were so gross I wish I could take back the choice to put a single bite in my mouth. I should have read a couple more reveiws! The beef is dog food at best! The pork was a whole bite of fat and gristle. Beans the consistency of diarrhea and rice that smelled like it was at least a couple of days old. All the bad reviews, I infer, are from people who prefer totally americanized, hipsterized, mexican food. The stench of snobbery permeates off those reviews. Personally, I have never received anything but simple, kind service from the gentlemen at Super Torta. Maybe it has something to do with the way I treat them. If you walk in with an attitude and treat them and their establishment as below you or if you are high maintenance and demand special substitutions, then you will probably be treated the same in return. If you want their good, simple, hearty, inexpensive food and order it kindly and respectfully, you will be treated the same and get good, simple, hearty, inexpensive food. I don't know any of these guys personally, but I live in the neighborhood and frequent their joint often...so much so that they know my face. I guess I feel a little protective of them because they are always so good to me. I can't imagine them treating anyone badly without due cause. I've worked in the food industry and dealt with snobs. Very good fast food Mexican food. Absolutely nothing special about most of the food, other than it being truly authentic Mexican, which is rare in Portland. The portion sizes are excellent and the price is reasonable. The workers can be grumpy and sometime skimp on the hot sauce, otherwise pretty good! read more

I love me a good taqueria, but this does not fit the bill. The food is Meh. My husband and I love $4-$5 burritos. The beans were not cooked well and had no flavor so the burrito kind of sucked. The one thing a taqueria should do well is beans. On top of the beans not being so good the guy taking orders was not up for the task. Just not paying attention, unaware or did not care that he was taking someones order, talking super fast, forgot to give my card back and talking to someone else the whole time while taking my order. I've tried this place off and on for five years. I have to say that I don't trust the ingredients. Somehow, everything just tastes "off". I always wanted to like the food because it's inexpensive and I love mexican food,,,,,but alas, it's just not good. Avocado sauce? What in hell is that? Sweet mother of Jesus, I bet they were serving avocados and guacamole during the inflation crisis of the Seventies. Even the sour cream was runny. The al pastor in my enchiladas tasted like charred bark dust after it had been shoveled from a closed down elementary school on a dreary and drizzly November day. Oh, and enchilada sauce? Must have been an afterthought, or was that it wasn't there because you burnt it all to hell and had a hard time scraping it off the bottom of the pot with a knife? I really like this place. Their chili cheese fries are awesome plus if you ask they put french fries in your burritos (yes that's a good thing!) they are really friendly and quick service. Great spot and close to home. Always friendly and always fast. Ive tried numerous items from the menu and Ive never been disappointed. I believe this is the closet Mexican food to my house, so I was pretty excited to see the array of traditional plates and cheap big burritos. They are pretty basic- meat, cheese, rice, beans and avocado sauce (which is a really super thin version of guacamole). And delicious for the hangover blues! I've only had burritos, a super quesadilla, and fish tacos from here. Not really psyched on any of it. Prices are high ($5) for burritos that are subpar to Cha Cha Cha or Ole Ole. Maybe the tortas are good, but they aren't really my thing. I'll try one at some point just to make sure I'm not missing something here. Overall, I'm only going to this place for the sheer convenience of it's proximity to my home. It may not be the best mexican food in portland, but it excels at what it is...a perfectly good burrito/taco joint that has reliably kept me fed (I work a stones throw away) and happy for years now. The food is cheap but they give you big portions! It doesn't make up for the fact that they can't give you a dollop portion of sour cream (it's 2.25 for a big serving, Yet they can't just make you a small one..) and they don't have guacamole. What Mexican place doesn't have guacamole? Obviously French fries aren't going to be there forte.. but if you do get them they are pretty soggy and not great. The horchata is from a soda machine... not hand crafted. I only come here bc it's so close to my house, but it's always my last option. This place has some pretty good tacos! It's almost impossible to close them as they overflow with meat. Their Super Taco is also quite satisfying. The place itself is nothing fancy, and I've never really seen anyone actually have dinner there, but their takeout service is fast and I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes if I order on the spot. This place is delicious...I live just down the street...so nice to have some good Mexican food within walking distance! I usually get a carne asada burrito....it's so huge I can't even finish it. The next best thing, I believe, are their "Super Nachos." MAN. The chicken is amazing. They actually put sour cream on your nachos...instead of going to Qdoba or Chipotle and getting a glob of sour cream on the top of them, this is actually smothered with it. (Can you tell I love my sour cream?) It's cheap, but a little dingy on the inside...but isn't that where the best kinda food is? The Super Torta bread is fantastic, the service is friendly, and the food is really something else. I go here 2 or 3 times a week for a quick meal. You must eat here if you're in the area. read more

i'm being generous with two stars. i am sort of a gentrifier given i grew up in san francisco -- so i know what good mexican food can taste like. i've never been able to figure out why the mexican food in portland is so bad -- with the notable exception of food carts. there are more than a few people from mexico here, so why? But just ordered meat plate with chicken and literally the worst mexican food i've had. meat terrible, dry, tasted bad like the meat was bad, no spice. i fed it to my dog. I NEVER do that. they have two kinds of salsa, one the salsa verde and another that's dark red and have no idea what they are thinking. It's closest correlate is sriracha sauce. thick like a paste. I love this place and I can walk to it. The Combination Burrito is my favorite with the shredded beef. But to cure any hangover, I suggest the Chorizo Burrito which has eggs. My husband loves the combo plate with the ground beef and the Chimichonga here. Their ground beef is on the salty side, which I like. The homemade salsas are great as well.
